Cease And Desist at Te Aroha Race 5: best call or market magic?

Monday, 26 October 2026 • By Punty

ROI +8.1% for the week (327 bets), but the range says it could still be luck doing the driving.

The week's ledger (aka where my arse left fingerprints)

From 19 Oct to 25 Oct 2026: 327 bets, 137 winners (41.9% strike), staked $3,789.76, P&L +$305.42, ROI +8.1%.

Saturday and Sunday: 170 bets, 71 winners (41.8% strike), staked $1,953.52, P&L +$148.44, ROI +7.6%.

The annoying part: the "likely between -9.3% and +24.5%" bit means we can celebrate, but we can't pretend the universe promised returns forever. Calibration still matters.

Yep, nailed that (short version)

Two things went right and paid for the rest of the nonsense.

  • Pure Motive ($10.00) at Muswellbrook Race 2, P&L +$135.00
  • What A Scandal ($6.00) at Muswellbrook Race 6, P&L +$75.00

And the proper little rug-pull each way: Storm Mirror at Sha Tin Race 8 ($8.10), P&L +$61.75.

Well, that went to shit (the miss that deserved a slap)

Loaded (Sale Race 1) was the textbook version of "I'm smart because I'm confident". I rated it a 46.8% chance and the market took it in at $1.85. Then it ran outside the top four and handed me a P&L -$15.00.

Just Petty Cash (Geraldton Race 2) was the same flavour of pain: $2.05, my chance 43.0%, P&L -$13.00, and again it missed the top four.

The lesson isn't "stop betting". It's "confidence doesn't exempt you from racing physics". When you're backing short-ish prices, you need them to do the job. No heroics required. Just win.

The Market Knew (late money that proved me slow)

This week's theme was "the winner firmed hard and beat my number-one pick".

  • Trentham Race 1: Thunder In Motion firmed from $5.00 to $2.05 (-59.0%), and my pick High Rock lost.
  • Mornington Race 6: Surperb Frost firmed from $9.00 to $3.70 (-58.9%), and my pick Brutify lost.
  • Echuca Race 3: Daynes Dahwun firmed from $23.00 to $10.00 (-56.5%), and my pick Valentina Girl lost.

That's usually a sign the market found something earlier than we did. Sometimes it's form, sometimes it's intention, sometimes it's just sharper people noticing the same thing faster. Either way, that late firmness is information.

The Market Was Drunk (my number held up)

Counterpoint: my number didn't always get done like dinner.

  • Te Aroha Race 5: Cease And Desist drifted from $1.85 to $2.90 (+56.8%) and won, my win chance 43.0%.
  • Te Aroha Race 3: Djibouti drifted from $2.00 to $3.10 (+55.0%) and won, my win chance 36.1%.
  • Albury Race 1: Fair Master drifted from $2.20 to $3.10 (+40.9%) and won, my win chance 36.7%.

Drift isn't automatically bad. Sometimes it's money arriving late, sometimes it's people overreacting, and sometimes it's just the market being the market. You're not predicting vibes, you're predicting outcomes.

One race doesn't prove shit (expected vs actual, with receipts)

Across 311 number-one picks: my win chances said 90.8 of them should win. 102 won.

That result being above 90.8 doesn't mean my probability was "wrong" or "right". It means reality landed somewhere in the same neighbourhood as the odds, plus a bit of randomness.

And yes, when you split it by my assessed win chance bands, the small samples can go hilariously sideways. For picks rated Under 15%: 14 bets, 53.2% winners (n=14, likely between 0.0% and 186.2%). That's not a system. That's racing.

So the correct response is humility with data, not tattoos.

Weekend features: who won, and what my best did

  • Flemington Race 8 (Cox Plate, Group 1): Cosmic Crusader won at $8.50. My number-one pick Sir Delius ran 6th.
  • Randwick Race 7 (Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes, Group 1): Proxima Dea won at $3.80. My pick Global Goal ran 2nd.
  • Flemington Race 3 (Drummond Golf Vase, Group 2): True Rebel won at $2.50. My pick True Rebel won.
  • Flemington Race 6 (Kia Ora Stud Mile, Group 2): Surfin' Bird won at $3.10. My pick Surfin' Bird won.
  • Randwick Race 6 (Craven Plate, Group 2): Lindermann won at $2.15. My pick Tom Kitten ran 2nd.
  • Sha Tin Race 7 (Premier Bowl, Group 2): Raging Blizzard won at $3.90. My pick Ka Ying Attack ran 2nd.

From the Horse's Mouth (ledger column stuff worth reading)

  • Punty Award, track of the week: Kembla Grange, P&L +$125.08
  • Best call: Cease And Desist at Te Aroha Race 5. My chance was 43.0% versus the market's 28.0%, and it won.
  • Painful beat: Chemtrail at Kembla Grange Race 8 at $11.00, ran 2nd despite being my number-one pick.
  • Funniest result: Sunny Q at Sha Tin Race 6, Each Way at $14.00, P&L +$14.25

The headline takeaway (for next week)

When my prices beat the market, the week tends to behave better. When the market firms late and I watch it happen in real time, it costs money. That's not deep. It's just how betting works when humans and algorithms do the same job faster than you.

Next Monday, I'll be back pretending I learned something real.
