Rightio Loose Units, Geelong's serving up a Good 4 with the rail out 6m and a card that starts with a few bankers, then turns into a proper pub brawl once the quaddie legs roll around. We've got sunshine, a bit of breeze, and a stack of races where the map matters more than a bloke's haircut at the parade ring. Get the early position right and you'll look like a genius; get bailed up behind the wrong horse and you're sitting there like a stunned mullet in a Melbourne Cup queue.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Geelong, 8 races card
Rail: Out 6m Entire Circuit
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play fair, with on-pace runners getting the first crack)
Weather: Mostly sunny, 22°C, humidity 41%, wind 18km/h NNE (watch for gusts and a bit of lane shuffling)
Early lane guess: On-pace and handy runners get the nod; if the speed is soft, the fence can be gold early before the track opens up
Tempo profile: Plenty of slow and moderate tempos - this is a day where map control and jockey intent will decide a few
Jockeys to follow:
Jamie Mott — riding like he owns the joint on a few live chances and a couple of sneaky overlays
Mark Zahra — always worth a look when the market starts leaning his way
Jye McNeil — gets the right ride in Race 1 and is the sort who can make a short-priced fav look comfy
Stables to respect:
Jamie Edwards (5 runners) — the yard's got a few dangerous types and the market keeps nipping at them
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (3 runners) — they're in the mix with gear changes and money, never just here for a picnic
C J Waller (3 runners) — classy operator, and if one of theirs maps right, it can ruin your day in a hurry

Punty's take: This meeting is a weird old beast. The short races are a bit of a trap for the mug punter because the obvious horses are either unders or already have the cash flowing their way, while the middle of the card gets properly loose and starts handing out value if you're brave enough to survive the first few skirmishes. Race 3, Race 5 and Race 8 are the steaks; Race 6 and Race 7 are the chips, gravy, and absolute chaos. It's a bit Top Gun: Maverick out there - plenty of speed, not much room, and the bloke who lands first usually gets the spoils.

The drifted ones are the ones to watch, but don't go shovelling money into every mug-priced roughie just because the market has been noisy. This is more about knowing when to go hard and when to keep the wallet zipped. The best day story is simple: back the clean maps, trust the strong rides, and don't get seduced by every horse wearing a fancy nickname and a big set of teeth.

What it means for you: Keep the aggressive stuff for the races where the speed map actually lines up with the form. Races 3, 5 and 8 are the backbone of the day - that's where the real play lives, especially with the top pick in each race looking like the one the rest have to run down. Use your place bets like a safety net, because this card has enough close calls to make a grown man swear at the TV.

Where I’m getting stubborn is Race 6 and Race 7. They’re the sort of races where the tote can make you feel clever right up until the post, then smack the hat off your head. In those, the exotic box is the play - not because it's sexy, but because the race shape is messy and the order can get turned on its head by one well-timed ride. The roughies live and die by the map here, so if they’re drawn to do too much work, don’t be a hero.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Geeseven (Race 3, No.5) — $1.77
Why He’s the one they all have to beat and the form says he’s entitled to be there; the short price is fair enough, but this is a proper anchor for the day.
2 - Yoomee Wonder (Race 5, No.4) — $3.92
Why The drift has pinched some of the sting out of the price, and from the right sort of map she looks the one to keep rolling when the pressure goes on.
3 - Mrs Iglesia (Race 8, No.11) — $2.88
Why Barrier 3 in a sprint with a workable map is a lovely setup, and she’s got the sort of class edge that can make the leaders look like they’re running in sandals.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~20.07 = ~$200.69 collect

Race 1 – Maiden coin toss

Race type: Maiden, 1125m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, Marsept likely gets the comfy run from the inside while the others are trying not to get stitched up behind him
Punty read: This is the kind of race where the shorty either turns up and gets the chocolates or you’re left staring at the screen wondering why you bothered. Marsept is the obvious one, but the market’s already latched onto him and the job here is to survive, not get cute. Harry De Lad and Upolu have got the cash whispering in their ear, while Flamingo Flyer and The Botany Frog are the ones lurking if the fav goes walkabout. If Marsept jumps clean, he’s hard to get around - but this is not the race to swing the bat like Chris Lynn in the last over.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12 pool)

1. Marsept (No.8) — $1.37 / $1.10
Prob 40.9% | Place: 48.6% | Value: 0.84x
Bet $12.00 Win, return $16.44
Why The fence draw is gold in a race like this and he’s got the right sort of early position to control his own fate if he gets away with it.
2. Upolu (No.5) — $6.45 / $2.30
Prob 17.6% | Place: 26.9% | Value: 1.08x
Bet No Bet
Why Honest on-pace type with market support, but he needs things to go his way and the place line says he’s just not solid enough to trust.
3. Harry De Lad (No.2) — $8.20 / $2.60
Prob 14.3% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 1.09x
Bet No Bet
Why The money has come for him and you can see why, but from here he’s more of a saver than a smash job.
Roughie: The Botany Frog (No.4) — $9.65 / $3.10
Prob 9.2% | Place: 14.8% | Value: 0.78x
Bet No Bet
Why If he improves off that last effort and the leaders get rolling too hard, he’s the sort who can poke his nose into the money late.

Degenerate Exotic of the Race

No exotic recommended for this race
The box is thin and the value's cooked - if Marsept wins, just take the money and move on.

Race 2 – Maiden stab-fest

Race type: Maiden, 1225m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, but the market has already made a mess of this one with three or four runners all rolling forward
Punty read: The bookies have been mugged here. Stoneflight, Pursuit and Lady Of Power have all had serious cash, and the race reads like a bunch of debutants and resumers trying to work out who blinks first. Sayalero is the sneaky one with the winkers on, and She's Buoyant has gone from being wanted to being left for dead. This feels like one of those races where the tote can look smarter than you right until the last 100m, like a bad Marvel sequel that somehow makes money anyway.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12 pool)

1. Stoneflight (No.5) — $2.29 / $1.37
Prob 26.5% | Place: 35.7% | Value: 0.88x
Bet $12.00 Win, return $27.42
Why The gear change and the money say the stable means business, and if he jumps clean he’s the one they all have to find.
2. Pursuit (No.4) — $2.90 / $1.50
Prob 23.1% | Place: 32.1% | Value: 0.97x
Bet No Bet
Why Blinkers first time off a solid jumpout is no joke, but the market has already had a decent nibble and he’s priced like a bloke they expect to win, not gift you a feast.
3. Lady Of Power (No.7) — $2.85 / $2.20
Prob 21.2% | Place: 30.0% | Value: 0.88x
Bet No Bet
Why First look with all the gear on screams intent, but in a race this skinny you don’t want to be overpaying for the shine.
Roughie: She's Buoyant (No.10) — $12.00 / $4.60
Prob 7.2% | Place: 11.2% | Value: 1.26x
Bet No Bet
Why Big drift is a red flag, but if the race turns ugly and the main chances fluff their lines, she’s the one who can sneak into the frame.

Degenerate Exotic of the Race

No exotic recommended for this race
The market has already eaten the good prices and the box doesn't sing - watch the money, but don't overplay it.

Race 3 – Maiden with a proper shape

Race type: Maiden, 1325m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Geeseven sitting in the right spot and the rest trying to avoid giving away too much early
Punty read: Geeseven is the shorty, but this isn't one of those deadset sleepy favourites - he looks the right kind of horse to cop the pressure and still put them away. Back Of The Boat is the sort of honest battler who can hang around for a slice if the race gets a bit ugly, and Royal Maximus is the one the ring will keep in the conversation without ever quite making you rich. Elegant Contessa has the market sniffing around, but this is Geeseven's race to lose unless one of the outsiders lands a killer run like a band member suddenly deciding to play lead guitar.

Top 3 + Roughie ($25 pool)

1. Geeseven (No.5) — $1.77 / $1.10
Prob 38.4% | Place: 74.4% | Value: 0.85x
Bet $15.50 Win, return $27.51
Why He’s the racehorse with the best engine in the yard and the race shape says he should get every chance to put the field to bed.
2. Royal Maximus (No.6) — $5.45 / $1.40
Prob 13.9% | Place: 46.2% | Value: 0.93x
Bet No Bet
Why Handy enough in the market and the map doesn't hurt him, but he’s still more a place-type if the favourite rolls along.
3. Back Of The Boat (No.1) — $9.15 / $2.10
Prob 11.8% | Place: 40.6% | Value: 1.24x
Bet $9.50 Place, return $19.95
Why Fence draw, blinkers off, and a bit fitter - he’s the sort who can hang on for a slice when the race gets a touch messy.
Roughie: Tobeyeus (No.4) — $19.75 / $3.30
Prob 7.4% | Place: 27.3% | Value: 1.66x
Bet No Bet
Why He’s the swooper that benefits if they overcook it early, but he needs the race to fall into his lap rather than force his own hand.

Degenerate Exotic of the Race

Trifecta Standout: 5 / 5, 6 / 5, 6, 1 — $15
Why Geeseven anchors the thing and the place hunters can do the rest; if one of the honest types sneaks into the minors, this is the sort of bet that bites back nicely.

Race 4 – Maiden with a tricky tempo

Race type: Maiden, 1525m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, with Kiwi Jenni the obvious one but the backmarkers having plenty of time to make a mess of it if the speed crawls
Punty read: Kiwi Jenni is the obvious shortie and the market has backed that story, but slow-run maidens can turn into absolute glue traps if nobody wants to lead. Soldier Boi has the winkers on and the map isn't awful if they decide to lift, while Le Plus Rapide and High Altitude are the types who'll be hoping the first half is more boxing match than chess. If the short-priced mare gets the right trip, she can win, but there’s enough muck in the race to keep the black market boys interested.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12 pool)

1. Kiwi Jenni (No.10) — $1.56 / $1.10
Prob 37.8% | Place: 49.4% | Value: 0.88x
Bet $6.50 Win, return $10.17
Why The class line is obvious and if the pace is as soft as it looks, she should be right there at the business end.
2. Soldier Boi (No.5) — $3.88 / $1.30
Prob 20.9% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.86x
Bet $5.50 Win, return $21.31
Why Winkers first time and a nice enough map for a horse that can sit close and keep the pressure on.
3. Le Plus Rapide (No.1) — $9.15 / $2.15
Prob 11.6% | Place: 25.7% | Value: 1.47x
Bet No Bet
Why Back in trip and better for the sharper test, but he’s still needing the race to turn into a bit of a grind rather than a sit-and-sprint.
Roughie: High Altitude (No.7) — $15.25 / $3.10
Prob 7.7% | Place: 18.0% | Value: 1.79x
Bet No Bet
Why If they go too steady and he gets the right stalking run, he’s the sort of bastard who can flash home and blow up the quinella.

Degenerate Exotic of the Race

No exotic recommended for this race
The only live box is the banned kind, so keep your powder dry and trust the straight bets.

Race 5 – BM70 grinder

Race type: BM70, 1425m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, and that puts a premium on the horses that can settle cleanly without getting dragged into a early dogfight
Punty read: Yoomee Wonder has drifted but the race still looks hers if she can be within striking distance when they stack up the pace. Eternal is the short-priced name but the value is not exactly waving a flag at you, while Hot Chips is the sort of honest on-pacer that can make the race look more genuine than it is. Igotcha is the sneaky one at the better number - the sort of horse that has been around the block enough times to know when to sneak in under the radar. This is the kind of race where the tote thinks it's doing you a favour and then quietly pockets your lunch money.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15 pool)

1. Yoomee Wonder (No.4) — $3.92 / $1.95
Prob 24.4% | Place: 33.3% | Value: 1.23x
Bet $15.00 Win, return $58.88
Why The drift has handed us a better price and she still maps to get the right run if they don't string them out too much.
2. Igotcha (No.5) — $11.75 / $4.20
Prob 19.7% | Place: 28.0% | Value: 2.96x
Bet No Bet
Why This bloke keeps showing enough to make you look twice, and if the pace is muddling he can sneak into the finish at a decent price.
3. Hot Chips (No.2) — $4.40 / $2.15
Prob 17.8% | Place: 25.7% | Value: 1.01x
Bet No Bet
Why He’s in the right map spot and has a genuine case, but the price has him looking like he’s already eaten the edge.
Roughie: Time Bandit (No.3) — $16.50 / $5.00
Prob 6.9% | Place: 10.6% | Value: 1.45x
Bet No Bet
Why If he gets a soft enough trail and the race sags late, he’s the one who can make the finish a bit awkward for the favourite.

Degenerate Exotic of the Race

Quinella Box: 4, 5, 2 — $15
Why It’s a proper three-horse race on paper and the box keeps you alive if the honest one and the value one land in the first two spots.

Race 6 – Chaos handicap, mate

Race type: BM62, 1325m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, but the map is all over the shop with a stack of runners backing in and a few genuine swoopers lurking
Punty read: This is the race where the form guide starts smoking. Podargoni, Belmia, Ceremonious and Albanian I Am have all had the money, and the pace map says there’ll be a bit of jostling before they sort themselves out. Belmia is the one I can happily lean on as the win play, while Podargoni and Ceremonious are the sort of runners that make a boxed exotic sensible rather than sexy. This is Mad Max with saddlecloths - if you try to be too clever, the race will kick you in the shins on the way past.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15 pool)

1. Podargoni (No.5) — $16.25 / $3.80
Prob 16.6% | Place: 45.0% | Value: 3.61x
Bet No Bet
Why The map is right enough and the money says someone wants him, but at the price he's more of a player in the exotics than a straight-out banker.
2. Belmia (No.9) — $10.75 / $3.00
Prob 15.2% | Place: 42.2% | Value: 2.20x
Bet $15.00 Win, return $161.25
Why Big support, handy enough map, and if the leaders go too hard she’s the one who can sit off and pounce.
3. Ceremonious (No.7) — $13.75 / $3.40
Prob 13.5% | Place: 38.3% | Value: 2.48x
Bet No Bet
Why The stable knows how to land one when the market starts breathing down its neck, but he still needs the race to unfold cleanly.
Roughie: Albanian I Am (No.2) — $9.45 / $2.60
Prob 10.5% | Place: 31.3% | Value: 1.34x
Bet No Bet
Why Wide gate and a resuming profile mean he's got to do it the hard way, but the money says the yard expects a bit of a lift.

Degenerate Exotic of the Race

Quinella Box: 5, 9, 7 — $15
Why The race is a proper scramble and the box lets you survive the possibility that the money horses finish in a different order than the bloke on the rail would like.

Race 7 – Open bunch brawl

Race type: BM62, 1525m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Justique and a few others giving the race some shape, but not enough to make it simple
Punty read: This is one of those races where the form guide has a headache and the market has already taken a stance. Justique is the one with the class and the best ticket to the podium, while Move The Torana and Sabeeria are the sort of horses that can get you a decent collect if the race turns into a bit of a speed puzzle. Easy Dun is the horse I’d keep one eye on because the drift says the market isn't in love, but the talent's still there if the gaps open. Wide-open race, no runner above 15% in the mix - that’s not a race, that’s a negotiation.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12 pool)

1. Justique (No.12) — $2.67 / $1.37
Prob 15.0% | Place: 27.4% | Value: 0.53x
Bet $12.00 Place, return $16.44
Why She’s the one with the right class edge for this sort of race, and the place bet is the smart way to play it with the way the field has opened up.
2. Move The Torana (No.11) — $5.40 / $2.15
Prob 14.2% | Place: 26.3% | Value: 1.02x
Bet No Bet
Why Honest enough and the trainer's got the yard ticking over, but from this map he’s more of a helper than the main act.
3. Sabeeria (No.13) — $9.45 / $3.10
Prob 11.6% | Place: 22.2% | Value: 1.46x
Bet No Bet
Why Fits the race shape and the last bit of support is a decent hint, but the draw and the map mean he needs things to fall his way.
Roughie: Easy Dun (No.9) — $15.50 / $4.40
Prob 10.2% | Place: 20.0% | Value: 2.11x
Bet No Bet
Why The drift is ugly, but if the race gets messy and the tempo flips late, he's the one who can lob in and wreck the exotics.

Degenerate Exotic of the Race

Quinella Box: 12, 11, 13 — $15
Why Open race, tight cluster, and the box gives you a live shot if the class horse and one of the value runners fill the first two slots in any order.

Race 8 – BM70 sprint finish

Race type: BM70, 1125m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Wingsandpropellers and Ballynacally likely to roll along up front and the rest trying to keep tabs on them
Punty read: Mrs Iglesia is the clear class play for mine, but the race isn't just a one-horse parade because the front end will be set up by a couple of genuine speed types. Prince Of Parwan is the each-way snag at the juicy quote, and Southern Crescent/Zemgrinda are the sort of runners that can pick up the pieces if the leaders cut each other's throats. This is the sort of sprint where the bloke who waits too long ends up with a fistful of tickets and nowhere to go, so you want to be in position before the pressure gets ugly.

Top 3 + Roughie ($20 pool)

1. Mrs Iglesia (No.11) — $2.88 / $1.37
Prob 18.1% | Place: 47.2% | Value: 0.70x
Bet $15.50 Win, return $44.64
Why Barrier 3, good speed map, and enough class to sit back and crunch them late if the leaders go at it like they're auditioning for The Fast and the Furious.
2. Southern Crescent (No.12) — $13.25 / $3.60
Prob 14.3% | Place: 39.6% | Value: 2.54x
Bet No Bet
Why The map isn't hopeless and the back half of the race can bring her into play, but she’s more of a minor player than a bet.
3. Prince Of Parwan (No.1) — $23.00 / $5.00
Prob 12.1% | Place: 34.5% | Value: 3.72x
Bet $4.50 Each Way ($2.25W + $2.25P), return $51.75 (wins) / $11.25 (places)
Why Massive price for a horse with a decent map and enough upside to hit the frame if the short ones get trapped in a scrap.
Roughie: Zemgrinda (No.5) — $19.25 / $4.80
Prob 11.4% | Place: 32.8% | Value: 2.94x
Bet No Bet
Why He’s the sort of roughie that can cause a stink if the pace melts, but the inside and better-positioned runners probably get the first crack.

Degenerate Exotic of the Race

Quinella Box: 11, 12, 1 — $15
Why Mrs Iglesia is the anchor, but the value runners can absolutely slide in around her if the sprint turns into a proper burn-up.

EARLY QUADDIE

Smart: 8, 5, 2 / 5, 4, 7 / 5, 6, 1, 9 / 10, 5, 1, 7, 4 (180 combos x $0.19 = $35) — 19% flexi
Tight through the first three legs, then Race 4 opens the gate and turns it into a bit of a survival test. Good ticket if you like living with one eye twitching.

Punty's take: Two banker-ish legs and two that can still mug you at the death - this is solid if the favs hold and ugly if one of the shorties falls over. The 19% flexi keeps the payout honest without turning it into a full clown-car special.

QUADDIE

Smart: 4, 5, 1 / 5, 9, 7, 1, 3 / 12, 11, 13, 9, 4, 3 / 11, 12, 1, 5, 13 (450 combos x $0.14 = $65) — 14% flexi
This is a proper throw at the stumps: one clean leg to start, then three chaos legs that can spit the dummy at any time. Entertainment with a chance, but don't pretend it's a picnic.

Punty's take: The back half is a minefield, so this one's more for the sickos who like a sweat than the faint-hearted. Four open legs means one wrong move and you're done, but the box coverage is at least sensible enough to keep the dream alive.

BIG 6

Smart: 5 / 10 / 4 / 5 / 12 / 11 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2) — 200% flexi
A skinny little ticket that leans on the obvious answers and hopes the chaos doesn't go full Bonkers.

Punty's take: This is basically a prayer in tab form - one runner per leg and a whole lot of faith. Fine for a flutter, but if you’re paying rent with it, the racing gods will have a laugh.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - The market is doing the talking in Race 2 and Race 6
Stoneflight, Pursuit, Lady Of Power, Podargoni, Belmia and Ceremonious have all been backed as if the ring boys got a tip from the heavens. That's usually a sign there's some intent behind the scenes - but in a race like Race 6, it can also mean the whole field is getting money and nobody's truly safe.

2 - Geelong's short races are map races today
With the rail out 6m and a bunch of slow or moderate tempos, the horses on the speed or sitting handy have the first swing. If you're backmarking in a race where nobody wants to roll early, you're basically hoping for a movie montage and a miracle.

3 - Don't get sucked into the $20-$50 roughie hole
Historically that band has been a punter graveyard, and this card has a few shiny longshots that look flashier than they are. Prince Of Parwan and one or two others are the right sort of value plays - but if you're just chucking darts at the board because the price looks juicy, the bagman will be the one laughing.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Geelong's a day for discipline, not dreams. Get the bankers right, box the chaos, and don't go chasing every shiny drift like a seagull after hot chips. If the quaddie lands, make sure you're the bloke holding the tickets, not the bloke telling the story. Gamble Responsibly.
