Mishani Cabello at Toowoomba Race 6: did the drift actually pay?

Monday, 02 November 2026 • By Punty

ROI +17.1% from 359 bets is either skill… or the universe taking the piss on a statistically noisy week.

The week's ledger: 26 Oct to 01 Nov 2026

We backed 359 times, found 147 winners (40.9% strike), staked $4,207.30, and ended up +$720.61 for ROI +17.1%. Saturday and Sunday did most of the talking: 183 bets, 76 winners (41.5% strike), staked $2,125.00, P&L +$394.88, ROI +18.6%.

And yes, that ROI comes with a big neon sign saying "we can't prove shit off one week", because the range is likely between -0.3% and +33.9% at that sample size. Still, it beats writing "please enjoy your losses" in the comments.

Yep, Nailed That

The wins that were both "right horse" and "right price" are the ones that keep your confidence from turning into full-blown delusion.

  • Soul Lady (No.5), Queanbeyan Race 7, Win at $6.50, P&L +$82.50; my win chance 34.6%
  • The Torque Xpress (No.2), Casino Race 5, Win at $6.00, P&L +$75.00; my win chance 34.1%
  • Top Liner (No.9), Traralgon Race 3, Win at $6.50, P&L +$71.50; my win chance 32.1%

That's the sweet spot: when the market price doesn't crush your edge, and the horse actually does the job.

Well, That Went to Shit

Now for the flops that hurt most because they weren't even close enough to argue. Two of my most confident number-one picks had win chances sitting at "this is probably a good bet" territory, and then they ran outside the top four.

  • Post Mark (No.12), Moree Race 4, Win at $2.20, P&L -$13.00; my win chance 46.5%
  • Quarterback (No.12), Warwick Farm Race 1, Win at $3.90, P&L -$13.00; my win chance 42.5%

Here's the serious bit: confidence based on probability does not immunise you from randomness. When you rate a horse at 46.5% and it misses, it's not "you were stupid", it's "that outcome happened". Which is why we track weeks, not feelings.

The Market Knew

Sometimes the market moves like it has inside knowledge. Sometimes it's just competent. Either way, it crunched my original pick when the winner firmed hard.

  • Eagle Farm Race 4: Pink Dogwood won, firming from $51.00 to $15.00 (-70.6%); my pick Ready Set Tergo lost
  • Ipswich Race 5: Ludik won, firming from $17.00 to $5.00 (-70.6%); my pick Transgress lost
  • Queanbeyan Race 3: Fred Astern won, firming from $13.00 to $3.90 (-70.0%); my pick Entirely Oak lost

That pattern is useful: when the winner gets hammered late, the "value" story often flips from your side to theirs in a hurry. You don't need to predict every move. You just need to respect the fact that late money usually has reasons.

The Market Was Drunk

And then you get the opposite outcome: my number holding up even when the price drifted. Racing is chaos, markets are chaos, and somehow the combo can still land in your favour.

The standout was the one you're probably here for.

  • Toowoomba Race 6: Mishani Cabello drifted from $2.30 to $3.00 (+30.4%) and won; my win chance 40.6%
  • Belmont Park Race 2: Encroaching drifted from $3.00 to $4.60 (+53.3%) and won; my win chance 27.4%

So what does this say? That price movement isn't always the market "correcting" you. Sometimes it's money being late, cautious, or just indecisive. Other times it's pure luck. Both can look the same on the day, which is why we look at the ledger, not vibes.

One Race Doesn't Prove Shit

This is where people get stupid, so I'll be the boring adult.

Across 342 number-one picks, my win chances suggested 100.8 of them should win, and 115 actually won. That comes out to winners versus expected of 114.1% (n=342, likely between 98.1% and 130.1%; no-effect line 100.0%).

That's a small but real lesson: your probability is a forecast, not prophecy. When the same method keeps landing around reasonable ranges over lots of bets, you can trust the process more than any single result.

It's also why the "under 15%" misses aren't a personal attack from the universe. For picks I rated under 15%, winners vs expected came out to 83.3% (n=9, likely between 0.0% and 249.7%; no-effect line 100.0%). That n is tiny. Declare victory or failure there and you're doing astrology with extra steps.

From the Horse's Mouth

The Punty Award, track of the week, and funniest result all made an appearance, because my brain needs variety to stay functional.

  • Punty Award, track of the week: Dubbo, P&L +$154.82
  • Funniest result (longest-priced collect, any bet type): Casa Rochester (No.4), Happy Valley Race 6, Each Way at $13.00, P&L +$12.75
  • Best call: Mishani Cabello, Toowoomba Race 6: my chance 40.6% vs the market's 27.1%
  • Worst call: Post Mark, Moree Race 4, my chance 46.5%, ran outside the top four
  • Painful beat: Winning Money, Happy Valley Race 5 at $10.00

Dubbo giving it to us and the Casa Rochester chaos collecting something back is exactly the sort of week that keeps you punting instead of writing letters to the TAB.

The weekend's feature races (the "did it match?" bit)

Some of the big ones lined up nicely, some didn't.

  • Flemington Race 6, Coolmore Stud Stakes (Group 1): The Next Episode won at $3.10; my number-one pick The Next Episode won
  • Flemington Race 7, Howden Victoria Derby (Group 1): Stormy Marco won at $4.60; my number-one pick Cormier ran 7th
  • Flemington Race 8, Empire Rose Stakes (Group 1): Lady Shenandoah won at $1.85; my number-one pick Lady Shenandoah won
  • Randwick Race 8, Asahi Super Dry Golden Eagle (Group 1): Skyhook won at $12.00; my number-one pick Sheza Alibi ran outside the top four
  • Ascot Race 8, Prince Of Wales Stakes (Group 3): Talkanco won at $2.35; my number-one pick Talkanco won
  • Ascot Race 9, Hosemasters - Asian Beau Stakes (Group 3): Hot And High won at $2.00; my number-one pick Hot And High won

Yes, it's annoying when a market price crushes your pick. It's also nice when your probabilities and the winners both show up. This week had both flavours, and the overall ledger ended up in the plus column.

If you want the honest takeaway: we didn't "beat racing". We mostly priced it decently, got a bit lucky on timing, and paid for mistakes the way everyone does when your confidence meets the calendar.
