The Race

The race was first run in 1973, created when the New Zealand Derby and Oaks moved away from Riccarton.

From 2025 it swapped places with the New Zealand 2000 Guineas and is now run on the first Saturday of Christchurch Cup Week, four days after the Melbourne Cup.

Katie Lee, in 2009, is the only horse to win both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas.

Well Written won the 2025 running by two and a half lengths as the $1.50 favourite, giving trainer Stephen Marsh his first 1000 Guineas in his 24th season.

Well Written was the third unbeaten winner of the race in 20 years, after Legarto and Seachange.

Jamie Richards trained or co-trained three winners from 2015 to 2021 (Risque 2015, Kahma Lass 2020, The Perfect Pink 2021).

Patterns, Rated

Strong signal: enough runnings and a racing reason behind it. Interesting: worth knowing, not worth betting on alone. Pub stat: fun at the bar, useless at the window.
