For all of Punty's tips for Ballarat, head to https://punty.ai/tips/ballarat-2026-04-03
Rightio Loose Units, Ballarat on a Good 4 with the rail true and a proper southerly has got "get on the speed or get buried" written all over it. The breeze up the straight should make the swoopers work for their dinner, so I’m treating the on-pacers and the handy sit-and-kick types like they’ve got the cheat codes today.
There’s a fair bit of market noise too, which is good fun for the pub brain but deadly if you chase every shiny drifter. The smart money has sniffed around a few of the right shapes - Deliberate Ploy, Flying Mikki, Too Darn Discreet - while a couple of favourites look a bit skinny for comfort. That’s where the value lies: not in blindly following the chalk, but in finding the horse that maps like a winner on this exact day.
The meeting feels like a mix of tactical races and a few proper brawls. The maidens are messy, the sprints should be run at a clip, and the staying stuff looks like it’ll reward horses that can park up near the right part of the track and keep finding. Think Speed vs Stamina, with the wind playing the role of that bastard mate who keeps moving the furniture around.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Ballarat, 1000m-2000m card
Rail: True Entire Circuit
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play on-pace friendly with the fence handy)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 15°C, humidity 51%, wind 25km/h S (watch for the headwind up the straight)
Early lane guess: Fence and forward runs look the pick; leaders and stalkers should get first crack
Tempo profile: A couple of tactical legs, but the sprints and the 2000m races should still give on-pace types the edge under this wind
Jockeys to follow:
Jamie Mott - cool head in tactical races; if there’s a gap, he’ll usually find it without turning it into a circus
Damian Lane - class act in these map-sensitive races; gives a backmarker every chance to land a punch
John Allen - no mucking around, and he’s on a few of the live ones who should be in the finish
Stables to respect:
C Maher (multiple runners) - plenty of live chances and a couple of runners with the right map to make the day hurt
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (multiple runners) - strong book across the card, with a few horses landing in the right sort of races
Matthew Cumani (multiple runners) - has a few that fit the shape of the day, especially where tempo and position matter
Punty's take: Ballarat’s got that classic Good 4 look where you don’t want to be giving the leaders a picnic. The headwind up the straight makes life harder for the swoopers, so I’m leaning into horses that can either control the race or sit close enough to pounce. That’s bad news for the back-half brigade if they’re forced to circle the paddock like a lost Uber driver.
The key pattern today is simple: don’t overrate horses that need a perfect burn-up, and don’t undersell the ones with an inside or low-pressure map. Deliberate Ploy, Flying Mikki, Too Darn Discreet, Oyster Lane - those are the types that can actually use the day, not just survive it. If the market’s banging on about a short-priced favourite but the map says "not ideal", I’m happy to poke a hole in the hype and take the value elsewhere.
What it means for you: Keep the aggression where the map is clean and the price is fair. That means your best plays are the horses drawn to get a soft run or sit in the first four while everyone else is burning fuel. The maidens and the open sprint are where you want to be a bit sharper with exotic cover; the staying races are more about taking the right horse at the right price and not getting seduced by a flashy name.
If you’re looking for a game plan, think "bank a couple of race shapes, then let the chaos races do the work". I’m happy to be more conservative in the races with a clear tempo edge, and a bit wider where the map is messy or the market is split. That’s how you avoid getting stiffed by the one that parks on the fence and never sees daylight.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Deliberate Ploy (Race 5, No.7) — $11.00
Why Barrier 2, handy map, and the market’s already had a good sniff; looks the one to gun to the front of the queue and keep rolling.
2 - Too Darn Discreet (Race 6, No.2) — $4.00
Why Maps to get the perfect sort of run in a race where position matters, and the slow tempo should let this bloke settle in and have the last crack.
3 - Flying Mikki (Race 8, No.2) — $5.20
Why Inside gate, lovely sit in a race that should play to the first four, and the market firming says connections aren’t here for a sightseeing trip.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~228.80 = ~$2,288.00 collect
Race 1 - Maiden mug’s game
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Oyster Lane and a few handy types likely to be right in the firing line
Punty read: This is a proper maiden headache, but the map gives Oyster Lane the first crack from barrier 1 and that’s a gift on this deck. Le Beau Gosse is the class horse on paper, but he’s the kind of backmarker who can get a bit of a hard-luck story if they crawl early. Il Patrigno is the obvious player at the pointy end, yet the price is a touch skinny for a horse that still has to prove it can punch through the line under pressure. Dama Royale is the roughie with the right sort of profile if the race turns into a grim little scrap and the leaders overdo it.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12 pool)
1. Oyster Lane (No.10) — $4.60 / $1.75
Prob 22.4% | Place: 59.0% | Value: 0.74x
Bet $5.00 Win, return $23.00
Why From the inside alley, he should get every possible chance to control the race or box-seat the whole way. With the wind making it harder for chasers, he’s the sort who can pinch the right run and keep the others off him.
2. Le Beau Gosse (No.8) — $4.30 / $1.65
Prob 18.8% | Place: 52.6% | Value: 0.92x
Bet $5.00 Place, return $8.25
Why The horse with the clearest class profile in the race, and if the pace sharpens up late he’ll be the one launching down the outside. You just don’t want to be too far back if the leaders are rolling.
3. Il Patrigno (No.2) — $3.47 / $1.37
Prob 14.4% | Place: 43.2% | Value: 0.82x
Bet $2.00 Place, return $2.74
Why Solid enough on form and maps to have every chance without doing anything heroic. He’s the sort that can be in the finish if the favourite gets found wanting.
Roughie: Dama Royale (No.15) — $10.00 / $2.90
Prob 13.1% | Place: 40.0% | Value: 1.03x
Bet No Bet
Why The filly has been finding the line and if the race gets strung out late, she’s the one that can clunk into the minors and blow up the exacta pool like a sneaky villain in a heist movie.
Quinella Box: 10, 8, 2 — $15
Why The race is messy enough that I’m happy to keep it tight around the three runners who can actually control the map or get the right stalking run. If the tempo is only moderate, these are the blokes who can put themselves in the picture without needing a miracle.
Race 2 - Sprint job with a few landmines
Race type: BM66, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Aqueduct likely to make it a genuine dash and a few others close enough to harass
Punty read: This is the sort of 1000m race that can look simple and then absolutely spit in your face. Mrs Iglesia is the class mare in the field but she’s not being handed an easy map, and if they string it out, Endless Forevers and Yes We Are are the ones who can capitalise on the pressure. Not Surprised is the spicy one - good speed, decent draw, and enough going his way to make the market look a touch too casual. Aqueduct and Blaze Away are the pace pieces, but the first bend will sort out who’s bluffing and who’s the real deal.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.5 pool)
1. Mrs Iglesia (No.8) — $2.92 / $1.25
Prob 22.8% | Place: 60.6% | Value: 0.75x
Bet $8.00 Win, return $23.40
Why Damian Lane from barrier 2 is the kind of setup you want in a speed race, and if he can keep her out of trouble she’s got the turn of foot to be right there when it matters.
2. Endless Forevers (No.12) — $15.00 / $3.50
Prob 17.5% | Place: 50.8% | Value: 2.94x
Bet $6.00 Place, return $21.00
Why The fresh run has sharpened this bloke up and the market’s backed the vibe for a reason. He’s the sort who can sit off the pace and gobble them late if the leaders go at each other like it’s Mad Max in the first furlong.
3. Yes We Are (No.6) — $7.50 / $2.25
Prob 17.1% | Place: 49.9% | Value: 1.43x
Bet $6.50 Place, return $14.62
Why Honest, fit, and right in the sweet spot for a race that should be run on the seven horse’s necks. He’s got the sort of profile that keeps rolling when others are waving the white flag.
Roughie: Not Surprised (No.7) — $13.75 / $3.40
Prob 13.2% | Place: 40.9% | Value: 2.03x
Bet No Bet
Why If the speed burns and the better-fancied ones get tangled, this bloke is the sneaky grinder who can sweep up late and make a liar out of anyone who wrote him off.
Trifecta Standout: 8, 12 / 12, 6 / 6, 7 — $15
Why This one’s built for the right sort of map squeeze - Mrs Iglesia can hold the top line, Endless Forevers and Yes We Are look the natural chasers, and Not Surprised is the live one to mop up if the race gets messy. Good little positional bet if the pressure comes where it should.
Race 3 - Country trainers final grind
Race type: Benchmark 70, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo, with Ballynacally likely to force the issue and the rest of them trying to land in the right spot
Punty read: This is the first real proper contest of the day. Ballynacally is the horse they all have to catch after rattling off a serious run of form, but he’s drawn awkwardly and will need to cross or absorb a bit of work. Markdel is the danger from midfield - the sort of horse who gets the right trip when the front end gets annoying. Southern Crescent is the class favourite and has the form to win, but at the price he’s not exactly a steal. Miss Mahjong is the rough value play if the leaders overcook it and the race turns into a late squeeze.
Top 3 + Roughie ($25 pool)
1. Ballynacally (No.3) — $5.75 / $2.00
Prob 19.7% | Place: 53.1% | Value: 1.36x
Bet $14.50 Each Way ($7.25W + $7.25P), return $41.69 (wins) / $14.50 (places)
Why The form is red hot and the stable will be looking to keep him in the fight early despite the gate. If he crosses cleanly, he’s the one that can make the others chase him all the way home.
2. Markdel (No.1) — $14.00 / $3.70
Prob 16.4% | Place: 46.7% | Value: 2.77x
Bet $6.50 Place, return $24.05
Why He’s got the right blend of fitness and finishing ability, and if the leaders make this a bit of a slopfest, he’s the one that can be winding up like a freight train late.
3. Southern Crescent (No.9) — $3.80 / $1.65
Prob 16.2% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 0.74x
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.60
Why The favourite has the class edge and the market knows it, but he’ll need to be sharp enough from a decent draw to keep himself out of trouble. Handy enough to be there, but not exactly a free kick.
Roughie: Miss Mahjong (No.7) — $9.00 / $2.45
Prob 12.8% | Place: 38.3% | Value: 1.38x
Bet No Bet
Why Fresh horse with a decent record and the sort of profile that can pounce if the race gets reshaped by a solid tempo. If the leaders go too hard, she’s the one who can nick a spot and ruin the party.
Quinella Box: 3, 1, 9 — $15
Why Ballynacally, Markdel and Southern Crescent are the three most logical shapes in the race, and the map says one of them should be right there at the business end. This is the sort of race where a tidy box beats trying to be a hero.
Race 4 - Staying grinder
Race type: BM66, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo, with Both Sides Now likely rolling along and the others trying to land close enough not to get buried
Punty read: This is a proper 2000m puzzle with a couple of horses that can use the map and a few others who are either too wide or too fancy for their own good. Both Sides Now should be right in it from the front end, while Yauson is the one the market has latched onto from a horrible gate, which is always a bit of a "show me" proposition over this trip. Cachink is the blowout if the pace is stronger than expected and the race starts turning into a slog. Lauding’s the sleeper because the extra trip and the tongue tie could wake him up in the last furlong or two.
Top 3 + Roughie ($25 pool)
1. Both Sides Now (No.2) — $8.60 / $2.75
Prob 16.6% | Place: 45.3% | Value: 1.76x
Bet $13.50 Each Way ($6.75W + $6.75P), return $58.05 (wins) / $18.56 (places)
Why The leader map suits, the form is sound, and from barrier 3 he should get the sort of run that keeps him in the race for a long way. If he gets to dictate, he’s going to be a bastard to run down.
2. Yauson (No.9) — $4.80 / $1.95
Prob 15.8% | Place: 43.8% | Value: 0.94x
Bet $11.50 Place, return $22.43
Why Short enough for a horse still proving itself at the trip, but the raw ability is obvious. If Jett Stanley can navigate the gate and get him rolling without too much traffic, he’s a real danger.
3. Sotomayor (No.7) — $16.00 / $4.40
Prob 11.3% | Place: 33.6% | Value: 2.25x
Bet No Bet
Why He’s the live improver if they overdo it up front, because he’s got enough fitness and enough turn of foot to suddenly look very silly at the finish.
Roughie: Cachink (No.4) — $21.00 / $5.00
Prob 9.8% | Place: 29.5% | Value: 2.54x
Bet No Bet
Why Big price, but not a write-your-own-ticket job if the tempo gets serious and the leaders start staggering late. He’s the sort that can roll through the ruck and pick up the scraps.
Quinella Box: 2, 9, 7 — $15
Why This is a proper rolling maul of a race, and these are the three that make the most sense if it turns into a grind. Open 2000m races love to throw up a mess, so I’m happy to keep the exotic tight around the likely finishers.
Race 5 - Up and comers with a favourite to take on
Race type: Class 3, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo, with New Sovereign likely to lead and Deliberate Ploy getting the sweet run just behind
Punty read: This is the race where the day starts getting serious. Deliberate Ploy looks the right horse at the right price - barrier 2, good map, and the market support says the stable means business. Rohesia is the obvious class mare and maps well enough, while Mr Blunt has already been trimmed in and should get a lovely run. Russian Choice is the one everyone will want to take a short price about, but I’m not convinced he’s a gift in a race with a few proper gears and a leader who could make him work for every inch.
Top 3 + Roughie ($25 pool)
1. Deliberate Ploy (No.7) — $11.00 / $2.20
Prob 25.0% | Place: 65.7% | Value: 3.12x
Bet $9.00 Each Way ($4.50W + $4.50P), return $49.50 (wins) / $9.90 (places)
Why Barrier 2, good map, and the market’s already had a good old sniff - this is the sort of setup where a horse can get the perfect stalking run and shove its nose in front when the whips go.
2. Rohesia (No.8) — $3.50 / $1.30
Prob 20.5% | Place: 58.4% | Value: 0.82x
Bet $11.00 Place, return $14.30
Why She’s the class act in the field and, despite the slightly awkward gear shuffle, still looks set to have every chance. If she’s anywhere near her best, she’s the one to beat.
3. Mr Blunt (No.3) — $5.00 / $1.37
Prob 15.4% | Place: 47.7% | Value: 0.88x
Bet $5.00 Place, return $6.85
Why Been backed and has the kind of map that lets him settle into the race without any nonsense. He’s the grinder who can hang around when others start feeling the pinch.
Roughie: Em Sixty (No.1) — $20.00 / $3.30
Prob 13.7% | Place: 43.6% | Value: 3.12x
Bet No Bet
Why If the tempo gets hot and the leaders begin to fold, this bloke can run over the top of them with a late swoop. He’s the one that turns a tidy race into a messy collect.
Trifecta Standout: 7, 8 / 8, 3 / 3, 1 — $15
Why Deliberate Ploy gets the right run, Rohesia and Mr Blunt should be in the frame, and Em Sixty is the late launcher if the front end goes too hard. Nice little positional stab in a race where the favourite isn’t bulletproof.
Race 6 - Country Oaks crunch time
Race type: Open, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, which should help horses who can sit handy and finish off without a stack of work
Punty read: This is the kind of race where tempo becomes the whole bloody story. Too Darn Discreet looks perfectly set up - midfield, right distance, and the likely pace pattern means he can stride into it at the right time. Suntora is the classy one but she’s got to overcome the slow tempo from a back half style, while Strictly Business is the honest mare who should be thereabouts again. Jennilala is the one who might get over-hyped off the right first-up profile, but if she overdoes it on the speed, she can leave herself ripe for a late poke.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12 pool)
1. Too Darn Discreet (No.2) — $4.00 / $1.37
Prob 26.4% | Place: 69.4% | Value: 1.29x
Bet $5.00 Win, return $20.00
Why The map is a gift - he should get the perfect midfield run in a slowly run staying race, and that’s the kind of setup where a horse can pounce without needing to do the hard yards early.
2. Suntora (No.3) — $2.70 / $1.25
Prob 23.7% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.78x
Bet $5.00 Place, return $6.25
Why The class and form are there, but she’ll need the race to be run to suit because the tempo might not be generous enough for the backmarkers. Still, if she’s close enough turning for home, she’s a proper threat.
3. Strictly Business (No.4) — $4.55 / $1.50
Prob 18.6% | Place: 56.3% | Value: 1.03x
Bet $2.00 Place, return $3.00
Why Honest grinder who maps to get a soft enough run and keep plugging away. Not flashy, but the sort that can finish in the frame while the others are staring at each other.
Roughie: Broadhurst (No.8) — $48.50 / $7.00
Prob 1.1% | Place: 4.2% | Value: 0.65x
Bet No Bet
Why This is a proper old school roughie dart - needs the race to turn upside down and a miracle to come through, so I’m not pretending it’s a serious play. Just a chaos grenade if the staying mare race falls apart.
Quinella Box: 2, 3, 4 — $15
Why Slow tempo, genuine staying class, and the right kind of map make this a race where the three logical players can stick their noses over the line. Not sexy, but if you’re alive here you’re grinning.
Race 7 - Speed scrap
Race type: Open, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo, with Press Down leading and a heap of pressure expected
Punty read: This is the race where the wind and speed map could absolutely cook the leaders if they go too hard. Spywire is the one I keep coming back to - he’s got the right draw and a decent enough sit - while She’s Bulletproof has the map and the betting support to run a big race. Oak Hill has the class and should be there late, but the real fun is that the favourite Geegees Mistruth has enough in his favour to be dangerous without looking like a complete certainty. Recommendation is the smoky if you want to play it like a late-night Marvel villain - blinkers off and hoping he unlocks a better version.
Top 3 + Roughie ($25 pool)
1. Spywire (No.5) — $9.00 / $2.80
Prob 16.0% | Place: 44.3% | Value: 1.65x
Bet $11.50 Each Way ($5.75W + $5.75P), return $51.75 (wins) / $16.10 (places)
Why Strong map, good speed, and the pace pressure should make him the right horse to be finishing off once the others start looking around. He’s the one I want if this turns into a proper burn-up.
2. She’s Bulletproof (No.4) — $7.25 / $2.40
Prob 14.7% | Place: 41.5% | Value: 1.22x
Bet $10.00 Place, return $24.00
Why The market’s had a good push, and from the good draw she should be in the sweet spot to have every chance. If she’s not too cooked by the pace, she’s right in the mix.
3. Oak Hill (No.2) — $7.00 / $2.25
Prob 13.2% | Place: 38.3% | Value: 1.06x
Bet $3.50 Place, return $7.88
Why He’s the class horse in the field and one of the better late finishers, but he’ll need the leaders to keep softening each other up. If that happens, he’ll be finishing like he means it.
Roughie: Recommendation (No.3) — $29.00 / $6.00
Prob 8.5% | Place: 26.2% | Value: 2.83x
Bet No Bet
Why If the race turns into a mess and the front runners are cooked, this bloke is the sleeper who can come over the top and spit in the market’s eye.
Quinella Box: 5, 4, 2 — $15
Why This is the right race to box the horses with the cleanest speed-map claims and the best chance of surviving the pressure. If the leaders soften each other up, one of these three should be right in the frame.
Race 8 - Trainers final smoke-out
Race type: Benchmark 70, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Flying Mikki and Cameron Falls the obvious runners to benefit from sitting close
Punty read: This feels like a race where the map matters more than the headline name. Flying Mikki gets the kind of run that can make a favourite look ordinary, while Cripps is the horse the market wants to trust but he’s being asked to do the work at shorter odds than I’d like. Glenfinnan is the drift horse with the big upside if he’s actually ready to fire, and Blakmax is the roughie who can surprise if the leaders overdo it. I’d rather be on the horse that can sit second or third and launch than the one who needs to be perfect from a middle lane.
Top 3 + Roughie ($25 pool)
1. Flying Mikki (No.2) — $5.20 / $1.65
Prob 23.3% | Place: 60.1% | Value: 1.46x
Bet $14.00 Each Way ($7.00W + $7.00P), return $36.40 (wins) / $11.55 (places)
Why Perfect draw, strong map, and enough pace around him to let the race unfold in his lap. This is the sort of setup where the favourite can get beaten because he’s the one doing the donkey work.
2. Cripps (No.4) — $4.00 / $1.45
Prob 21.0% | Place: 56.3% | Value: 1.01x
Bet $8.50 Place, return $12.32
Why He’s the class and the betting has him right there, but at the price you’re asking him to be near perfect. Still, he’s clearly one of the big dangers if the race pans out kindly.
3. Glenfinnan (No.5) — $17.00 / $3.70
Prob 11.4% | Place: 35.6% | Value: 2.34x
Bet $2.50 Place, return $9.25
Why The drift is eyebrow-raising, but the horse has the profile to bounce if the stable has him right. If he finds the right leg and the race turns tactical, he can come into it at a price.
Roughie: Blakmax (No.3) — $29.00 / $5.00
Prob 9.4% | Place: 30.0% | Value: 3.27x
Bet No Bet
Why The big price, big drift and decent enough map if he lands handy. He’s the sort that can make a race look like a scene from Peaky Blinders if the favourites all go to water late.
Quinella Box: 2, 4, 5 — $15
Why Flying Mikki, Cripps and Glenfinnan are the three that make the most sense in a race that should reward horses sitting close. You’ve got the map horse, the class horse and the blowout, which is about as tidy as this race gets.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
EARLY QUADDIE (R1–R4)
Smart: 10, 8, 2, 15, 6, 14 / 8, 12, 6, 7 / 3, 1, 9, 7, 6 / 2, 9, 7, 4, 6, 5 (720 combos x $0.04 = $32) — 4% flexi
This is a proper survival ticket - two trios, then two legs that can absolutely blow up if the tempo or the map goes sideways. Not pretty, but it gives you a crack if the maidens and mid-grade races go the way the pace says they should.
QUADDIE (R5–R8)
Smart: 7, 8, 3, 1 / 2, 3, 4, 1 / 5, 4, 2, 7, 6, 3 / 2, 4, 5, 3, 7 (480 combos x $0.04 = $18) — 4% flexi
A bit tighter and more live than the early quad, but Race 7 is the landmine. Two tidy stabs early, then a speed battle and a mid-fav finish - exactly the sort of thing that can either make you look like a genius or a complete mug punter.
BIG 6 (R3–R8)
Smart: 3 / 2 / 7 / 2 / 5 / 2 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2) — 200% flexi
This is entertainment only, mate - six legs and zero room for error. You’ve basically got to pray the racing gods are feeling generous and the chalk doesn’t start falling over.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Wind and rails combo
With the rail true and a headwind up the straight, Ballarat should reward horses on or near the speed more than deep swoopers. If you’re back-half in these conditions, you better be the best horse in the race.
2 - The market’s telling the story in a couple of spots
Deliberate Ploy, Flying Mikki and Too Darn Discreet have all attracted the kind of support you actually want to see. That’s not random pub smoke - those horses map well, and the money is behaving like it knows the script.
3 - Roughies at big prices are a trap here
The $20-$50 zone has been poison for roughie hunters in this kind of setup, so don’t go full outlaw just because something is paying a sexy number. If you want a blowout, make sure it’s got the map and the path to win, not just the dream.
THE LOOSE UNIT LOUNGE
That’s the lot, legends - a day where map matters, the wind matters, and the horses who can park up in the right spot should keep the accountants busy. Stick to the value, don’t get seduced by a pretty price without a path, and for the love of the punting gods don’t chase every drift like it’s the last schooner at the bar. Gamble Responsibly.
Punty's Wrap-Up
The Wrap Ballarat - Handy horses had a picnic
Ballarat pretty much went the way the map said it might: if you were on speed, handy, or parked in the right lane, you got your chance. Markdel, Too Darn Discreet, Spywire and Cripps kept us in the fight, while the exotics and the Big 3 multi mostly fell over like a fold-up chair at the bogan picnic. The big headline was simple — true rail, a bit of breeze, and position mattered a hell of a lot more than wishful thinking.
How It Unfolded
The day started like a proper speed-and-map test. The early races played pretty honestly, but the horses that could settle close enough to pounce were the ones getting first crack, and that matched the preview nicely enough. If you wanted to come from the car park, you needed the race to fall in a heap — and most of them didn’t.
By the back half, that pattern barely changed. The track stayed fair, but the true rail and the wind meant you didn’t want to be giving away ground or momentum for free. That confirmed the original read: Ballarat was a day for tactical speed, clean runs, and horses that could quicken off a sensible trip, not a day for heroic swoops from the moon.

Big 3 Multi Result
Missed. R5 No.7 Deliberate Ploy was the leg that blew it up — ran 4th and never quite got into the finish. R6 No.2 Too Darn Discreet won and R6 No.3 Suntora ran 3rd, but the damage had already been done in Race 5.
Race by Race — How'd We Go?
- R1: Ole Royale ($9.60) — our top pick Le Beau Gosse ran 4th, and the inside horse Oyster Lane bailed us out for a place.
- R2: Aqueduct ($3.80) — our top pick Yes We Are ran 7th; Endless Forevers grabbed the place and kept something on the board.
- R3: Markdel ($11.00) — BANG Each Way +$69.58; the top pick got the job done and did it properly.
- R4: Bold Strike ($10.80) — our top pick Both Sides Now ran 7th; the map didn’t land and the stronger stayers got swamped.
- R5: Rohesia ($3.40) — our top pick Deliberate Ploy ran 4th, got a fair run, but couldn’t reel in the leaders; Mr Blunt saved a place.
- R6: Too Darn Discreet ($4.20) — BANG Each Way +$21.85; Suntora also got into the money and the race unfolded right on the map.
- R7: Spywire ($8.10) — BANG Each Way +$53.40; our top pick delivered, and Recommendation ran 3rd to keep the roughie sniff alive.
- R8: Cripps ($3.60) — our top pick Flying Mikki ran 6th and never really got the lane he wanted; Cripps was the saver that landed the place.
What We Learned — The Factors That Mattered
Pace and map were the boss of the joint. The horses that could sit handy and get first crack kept winning the argument — Markdel, Too Darn Discreet, Spywire and Cripps all had trips where they could conserve petrol and then punch when it mattered. When the tempo wasn’t brutal, the backmarkers needed a pile of things to go right, and most of them were stuck playing catch-up like extras in a Mad Max chase scene.
Barrier position mattered too, especially with the true rail and the breeze knocking around. The inside-to-middle draws were your friends, and the wide runners had to burn more energy than they wanted. That’s where a few of our misses came unstuck — Deliberate Ploy never got the comfy showcase we were hoping for, Flying Mikki didn’t get the kind of setup that lets him unleash, and a few others were made to work harder than the market probably expected.
The market was useful, but not gospel. It got a few right, and when the money and the map lined up, you wanted to be with it. But there were also a few heavily-backed runners that never turned the lights on, which is a good reminder that steam on its own doesn’t win races — it just tells you someone’s having a sniff. You still need the right shape, the right tempo, and a horse that can actually execute the plan.
The big takeaway for next time at Ballarat on a true track like this: respect tactical speed, especially from low-to-middle gates, and don’t get seduced by swooper fairy tales unless the race shape is screaming collapse. In the sprints and middle trips, horses that can land on the first wave are worth their weight in beer tokens. This card was basically a lesson in “be there early, or be praying late.”
Track Read — How The Map Played Out
The speed map held up pretty well across the day. The early part of the card told the story straight away — handy runners were getting first use of the straight, and that pattern rolled through the sprints and the middle distances. If you were on the front foot, you were in the hunt; if you were buried or forced to circle, you were asking for trouble.
There wasn’t some wild inside/outside meltdown, but the true rail meant position was gold and wasted ground was deadly. The late races stayed honest to that read: the horses with the right trip kept sticking their noses in the frame, and the ones needing a miracle were left doing all the big finishing without the cheque. So yeah, the preview was pretty much on the money — map mattered, and it mattered a bloody lot.
