Rightio Loose Units, Bathurst on a Good 4 with morning frost and fog, this is the sort of day where the wrong bloke misses the kick and spends the rest of the race "counting corners" like it's a pub quiz. Pace matters, vibes matter, and if you back something off the map you deserve whatever the tote does to you. We ride, we cope, we post.

Big narrative for the day? It's a split card, you've got a couple of races that look like set plays, and then you've got the usual Bathurst chaos tax where first four minutes decide the whole mortgage. My spine is the Big 3 + Multi stuff below, because those three races line up with the best blend of pace, fitness and a market that actually has a clue.

And yeah, I'm aware we're dealing with 7 races and 85 runners, so plenty can go wrong quickly. So what do we do? We back where the story is loud, we protect where it's messy, and we treat the roughies like collectible trading cards. If they pop, they pop. If they don't, they still look cool in the stats screen.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Good 4, 1200-350m to the leaders get first dibs on the day
Rail: +2m 1200m-350m
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play Speed vs Stamina balance, crisp but not lightning)
Weather: Morning frost and fog, 0°C, humidity 97%, watch for early vision issues and tight, cautious starts
Early lane guess: Middle to On Pace early, then you want runners that can keep contact into the straight
Tempo profile: Mostly Slow to Moderate, with a couple of races where the leaders get to dictate the tempo
Jockeys to follow:
Damon Budler: goes hard when the race sets up for a leader, keeps things honest early
Grant Buckley: loves a job when the field strings out, can navigate traffic and timing
Mathew Cahill: steady hands in these grades, often makes the last section look easy
Stables to respect:
Pat Murphy (12 runners): puts them into the race ready, and when the market backs one you can see why
Liam Ruddy (3 runners): has the local feel, especially when a runner maps onto the speed
Scott Collings (2 runners): small team energy, but they don't send out passengers

Punty's take: Bathurst today is one of those cards where the track rating says "Good 4", but the air feels like "who turned the fridge on?". Fog early means the start and first bend are where you either get clear or you get parked behind problems. That's why I'm not overthinking the whole meeting, I'm just leaning into the races where the map and the gear line up.

Race 2 and Race 3 are the cleanest stories. In Race 2, the sprint format rewards the one that can hold the line without taking a trip into Narnia, and Red Rocquette is the type to get first crack at the front in a short dash. Race 3 is a maiden handicap where one horse looks like it already knows the script, Denise's Gal gets the nod as the most straightforward win story on the card.

Then Race 6 is your "oh yeah, this is why I studied" moment. Gail Jeanette has the profile of a horse that can sit handy, hit the straight running and not fold like a lawn chair. If you're playing multis, it's the kind of selection that stops your whole ticket from becoming a fan fiction draft.

What it means for you: Here's the punting game plan. Be aggressive in the races that are map-led, not the ones where we're guessing. That's why the Big 3 spine below has Race 2, Race 3 and Race 6 locked in, you're buying the day where the speed and fitness look like they'll get their chance.

For the rest, use the roughie angle properly. When I say roughie, I mean "if the speed collapses or someone behind the leader finds a seam", not "hope". Place bets are the safety net today, because fog and slow tempo often create a bunching effect where finishing positions are there for the taking if you're in the right pocket.

And remember, the Quaddie lanes (R4 to R7) are entertainment with structure. We're not chucking the kitchen sink at it, but we are widening the right legs because the second half of the card has enough "can't rule it out" runners to bite you if you go too skinny.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Denise's Gal (Race 3, No.7) — $1.75
Why On pace from the right draw, this mare looks built to keep rolling late in the straight.
2 - Red Rocquette (Race 2, No.10) — $1.69
Why Sprint map suits, and the market is treating it like the main character for a reason.
3 - Gail Jeanette (Race 6, No.2) — $4.70
Why Tackles the 1100m with pace onside, and the profile screams "no soft excuses".

Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~14.00 = ~$140.00 collect

Race 1 – John Kinghorn Memorial Mdn Plate

Race type: MAIDEN, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, with on pace runners having to survive midfield traffic
Punty read: This is a classic "distance maiden, slowly away, then everyone tries to sprint at once" Bathurst job. The Champion (#4) has the speed rating profile for a place, but the race story still points towards Gold Earth (#1) and Last Tour (#3) getting into that second wave. Apple Pie (#5) is drifting out like a balloon at a mate's wedding, so unless the front collapses, it's more "collect for fun" than serious.

Top 3 + Roughie ($20.50 pool)

1. The Champion (No.4) — $2.79 / $1.22
Bet $9.00 Win, return $25.11
Prob 29.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.93x
Why Barrier 9 doesn't feel sexy, but it's a slow-pace maiden so it can creep into the finish. Market knows it's live.
2. Gold Earth (No.1) — $4.30 / $1.55
Bet $8.50 Place, return $13.18
Prob 20.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.23x
Why Firming support and the excuses line up, held up last time, and now it gets a straight run at the right tempo.
3. Last Tour (No.3) — $3.90 / $1.45
Bet $3.00 Place, return $4.35
Prob 19.8% | Place: 65.7% | Value: 0.75x
Why The pacifiers first time is the key, plus it's drawn to avoid getting too far back in the early shuffle.

Roughie: Pride Of Hazel (No.8) — $17.50 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.5% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.69x
Why If the race turns into a scramble and it lands on the right run, it can sneak into the placings at a big price.

Race 2 – Central West Smoke Alarms Country Boosted Mdn Plate

Race type: MAIDEN, 1100m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, short sprint where positioning wins fights
Punty read: This is a sprint where the winner usually isn't the flashiest, it's the one who avoids being wide and stuck in no mans land. Red Rocquette (#10) is the clear "get to the front and don't let go" type at this trip. Mr Cacciatore (#1) has the upside to run a cheeky place, while Miners Mate (#8) is the kind of horse that can pop into the frame if the market leader gets pressure.

Top 3 + Roughie ($17.50 pool)

1. Red Rocquette (No.10) — $1.69 / $1.05
Bet $7.50 Win, return $12.67
Prob 34.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.75x
Why Draw and sprint class fit, plus the market's been piling in, that's never an accident.
2. Mr Cacciatore (No.1) — $5.10 / $1.60
Bet $6.00 Place, return $9.60
Prob 22.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.75x
Why Value play, and it's on pace, so it can hold a spot through the turn and cash late.
3. Miners Mate (No.8) — $4.80 / $1.60
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.40
Prob 21.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.18x
Why Gets a clean crack at a midfield run, and the sprint lets it keep momentum instead of chasing gaps.

Roughie: Sky Goddess (No.6) — $11.50 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.5% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 0.68x
Why If the speed collapses and it finds a seam, it can fill a spot, but it's a harder road to winning.

Race 3 – DRB Contracting Mdn Hcp

Race type: MAIDEN, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, pace advantaged runner should get first look
Punty read: This is Denise's Gal's race to lose. The on pace profile means it's not chasing, it's controlling. Let Up (#4) is the classic "quiet achiever" who keeps grinding, and Devil Dancer (#3) is live because it sits mid and can benefit if the front gets crowded. The rest feel like they're more for exacta or trifecta chaos, not for leading the story.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Denise's Gal (No.7) — $1.75 / $1.04
Bet $5.00 Win, return $8.75
Prob 37.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.88x
Why On pace, draws to do the job, and this tempo lets it stay balanced through the run home.
2. Let Up (No.4) — $5.10 / $1.55
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.20
Prob 23.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.58x
Why That lugging bit first time is a "watch it improve" sign, plus the barrier helps it be in play.
3. Devil Dancer (No.3) — $3.85 / $1.35
Bet $1.50 Place, return $2.03
Prob 19.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.00x
Why Midfield runner with an honest chance in a slow race, it just needs the right run in the straight.

Roughie: Silver Summit (No.2) — $10.80 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.8% | Place: 21.4% | Value: 0.68x
Why It can run into money if it gets a good position, but winning from here is more "hope + luck" than a certainty.

Race 4 – Bathurst Ag, Horse & Pet Hcp (C1)

Race type: CLASS 1, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, leaders pressure each other, so place bets shine
Punty read: C1 at Bathurst is usually "show me you're tough enough for the straight". Sellicks Beach (#6) is the pick for the EW style because it maps to be part of the run and not just a passenger. Brass Monkeys (#5) and Smichov (#4) are the glue in the quinella and trifecta lanes, they're the types that can grind into the placings even if the winner is a bit of a mystery.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.50 pool)

1. Sellicks Beach (No.6) — $4.65 / $1.72
Bet $15.50 Each Way ($7.75W + $7.75P), return $36.04 (wins) / $13.33 (places)
Prob 22.1% | Place: 64.0% | Value: 1.32x
Why Value on the place side, and it fits the tempo without needing a miracle.
2. Brass Monkeys (No.5) — $6.75 / $2.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.32x
Why If the pace steadies, it's right there, so it just needs the winner to come back for it.
3. Smichov (No.4) — $8.20 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 52.7% | Value: 1.42x
Why It's the grindy type, and in C1 the "keeps going" brigade can absolutely snatch a placing.

Roughie: Axiom (No.3) — $9.15 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.15x
Why Gear says it wants to improve, but it's more a minor threat than the main pick for today.

Race 5 – Offroad 4x4 Bathurst (Bm66)

Race type: BENCHMARK 66, 1800m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, distance means mistakes get punished
Punty read: This is a 1800 where the leaders can make it ugly, and that suits the sort of horses that can keep running without going empty. Like Lukey (#2) is the best bet story because it's on the right side of the tempo and has the class edge for this grade. Italus (#10) and Yiasou (#4) are the ones to cover if you're not confident the race turns into a straight sprint for first.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Like Lukey (No.2) — $5.60 / $2.15
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $29.40 (wins) / $11.29 (places)
Prob 18.3% | Place: 45.1% | Value: 1.38x
Why Genuine pace helps, and it's the type to keep finding even if the field stretches.
2. Italus (No.10) — $6.75 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 45.1% | Value: 1.40x
Why It can run top three with the right trip, but this ticket is built for the Place money.
3. Yiasou (No.4) — $6.20 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.5% | Place: 32.8% | Value: 1.05x
Why Needs a bit of luck in the final third, and it's just short of our place comfort line.

Roughie: Binkou (No.3) — $10.80 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.73x
Why If it gets into the right rhythm behind the speed, it can sneak into the minor spots, but winning is not the default.

Race 6 – Sheds n Homes Bathurst (Bm66)

Race type: BENCHMARK 66, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, leaders do their work, you want a horse that handles the tempo
Punty read: This is the cleanest "take the race seriously" leg on the back half. Gail Jeanette (#2) is the standout, because it's the sort of horse that can sit in the right area and keep accelerating in a straight line. Tommy Flyer (#6) is there for the value place option, and Nabha (#12) is the one to cover if the top horse gets pressured and can't get clear.

Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)

1. Gail Jeanette (No.2) — $4.70 / $1.90
Bet $6.50 Win, return $30.55
Prob 32.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 2.24x
Why The market's not giving it away for fun, plus the pace profile suits a 1100 straight contest.
2. Tommy Flyer (No.6) — $8.20 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.42x
Why It's live enough for a place, but our model says the odds are a bit off for the saver line.
3. Nabha (No.12) — $7.75 / $2.65
Bet $16.00 Place, return $42.40
Prob 11.8% | Place: 62.4% | Value: 1.34x
Why Great place leverage, it can get into a handy spot and run on without needing a miracle.

Roughie: Stormfield (No.9) — $10.10 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.5% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.81x
Why It can be competitive if the race bunches up, but winning is a tougher ask from here.

Race 7 – Dusty Hooves Media Country Boosted (Bm58)

Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, wide-open and pace-influenced chaos
Punty read: This is the late-card "fuck it, anything could happen" race, but it's chaos with direction. De Joker (#1) is the favourite for a reason, Jamacri (#2) is the value line, and Mrs Bull (#4) is the kind of on-pacer that can run into the money if the leaders don't get away clean. Miss Karis (#7) is your roughie because it's got the place profile and can surprise if the pace doesn't collapse.

Top 3 + Roughie ($14.50 pool)

1. De Joker (No.1) — $2.47 / $1.35
Bet $10.00 Win, return $24.70
Prob 14.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.61x
Why Short enough to be dangerous without being a lay, plus the on pace style means it's not stuck doing too much late.
2. Jamacri (No.2) — $6.20 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 42.0% | Value: 1.52x
Why Great chance to place, but the odds banding says this is not the cleanest value saver angle.
3. Mrs Bull (No.4) — $11.50 / $3.80
Bet $4.50 Place, return $17.10
Prob 9.3% | Place: 39.0% | Value: 1.80x
Why On pace and value in the place market, if it keeps contact it can absolutely steal a top three.

Roughie: Miss Karis (No.7) — $11.50 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.1% | Place: 19.5% | Value: 0.79x
Why It's got enough pace to be in the mix and the place odds are juicy if the race turns into a jockey's lottery.

SEQUENCE LANES

Quaddie (R4–R7)

Smart: 6,4,5,3 / 2,10,4,3 / 2,12,6,9 / 1,2,4,13 (256 combos x $0.10 = $25.00) -- 10% flexi
Punty's take: R4 is a tidy three-horse core, then R5 and R7 go open wide, and R6 stays structured with a standout plus coverage. This one's built to survive the Bathurst "surprise elbow" factor.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - The fog tax hits the starts harder than the rain ever does
Morning frost and fog means the early visibility is sketchy, so horses that can show speed and keep their path through the first bend are worth backing, especially at 1100 to 1200m.

2 - Put your money where the race stays together
Slow tempo races often bunch up, and the place game becomes king. That's why Race 1 and Race 3 lean into Place bets and why Race 6 is pure leverage.

3 - When the market firming is loud, listen for the tempo story
Red Rocquette in Race 2 and Gail Jeanette in Race 6 are being backed for a reason, and the maps match the support. If you ignore that and chase drifters, you're basically doing charity work.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Bathurst is today's reminder that "value" isn't a price tag, it's a story that makes sense at the distance. Back the spine, take the place money where it's there, and let the chaos finish in the background where it belongs. Gamble Responsibly.
