Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Carnarvon, head to https://punty.ai/tips/carnarvon-2026-06-26
Rightio Loose Units, Carnarvon's got a bit of weather stink on it with rain sniffing around and a rail that's staying true, so this is shaping up like one of those days where the map matters more than the poetry on the form page. If the track holds firm early, the on-pace types and the low-draw savages are going to get first crack at it; if the rain lands and the surface starts to chop up late, the swoopers will be trying to find daylight like they're in a Mad Max chase scene.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Carnarvon, 1000m-1600m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good (expected to play true early, then get a bit tricky if the rain bites)
Weather: Rain increasing, 19°C, humidity 83%, wind 20km/h NW (watch for late track chop and a bit of lane bias if the showers hit)
Early lane guess: Inside to middle early, with the fence still the place to be if the surface stays fair
Tempo profile: A proper mixed bag: a couple of crawls, a few genuine scrambles, and the sprint races should be tactical enough that map position is king
Jockeys to follow:
Rocky Cheung — keeps popping up on the pace horses and gets the right sort of rides for this track
Ms Giaan O'Donnell — handy claim and a few nice map horses; if she gets one rolling, pay attention
Jefferson Tsang — sits on a stack of live chances across the card and keeps landing in the key spots
Stables to respect:
Malcolm Mackenzie (7 runners) — has speed all over the shop and a few horses that can control a race if they jump clean
Aaron Pateman (7 runners) — right through the meeting with enough live types to make a real dent
Jacquelyn Scott (4 runners) — a couple of genuine map horses and the sort of stable that can nick one if the race shape lands right
Punty's take:
This looks like one of those Carnarvon cards where you don't want to get too romantic. The maidens aren't exactly full of freaks, so barrier, position, and who gets a soft enough run are doing the heavy lifting. Race 1 and Race 3 are your classic "who gets first crack at the sprint lane" affairs, while Race 4 is a proper 1000m bar fight where the first horse to blink might be cooked. Race 5 and Race 6 are the ones where the map can flat-out mug you if you fall asleep at the wheel.
The market's already having a sniff at a few runners, but some of those drifts are screaming caution rather than confidence. Hot Nova, The King's Uncle and Shooting Kontiki have all been eased, and that's never the kind of action that makes you want to tiptoe through the tulips. Meanwhile a few of the tougher on-pacers are getting firmed up, which tells you the stable money isn't exactly hiding under the couch cushions. This is a day to keep your eyes on the first 200m, because once they sort themselves out, a few of these races will be over quicker than a bad Netflix reboot.
What it means for you:
Don't go swinging like a mug punter in the messy races. The safer play is to lean on the horses that can map well, hold a forward spot, or have the right kind of finish for a steady tempo. In the maidens, the place lines make a lot more sense than trying to be a hero on the nose, and in the sprint races you want the horses with tactical speed and a good alley. If the rain arrives properly, be ready to downgrade the wide swoopers and upgrade anything that can sit handy without spending petrol early.
Keep the spine tight in the races that look bankable, and don't get seduced by the shiny roughie just because it's paying a price. Race 2 and Race 6 look like the cleaner betting lanes, Race 4 is the nasty one, and Race 5 is the sort of race that can either make your day or have you staring into the abyss with a flat beer and a busted ticket.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Violent (Race 2, No.6) — $2.25
Why Maps to park right on the speed, gets every possible favour from the race shape, and the stable/jockey combo is right where you want it in a moderate-speed dash.
2 - Belvedere Rock (Race 3, No.3) — $2.48
Why Best horse in the race on the paper, fresh gear change can sharpen it up, and this is the kind of mile where class and a clean run can put the others to the sword.
3 - Mystery Minute (Race 6, No.6) — $3.40
Why Solid on the map, rock-hard fit, and the one the others have to reel in if the tempo goes the way it should.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~18.97 = ~$189.72 collect
Race 1 – Maiden scramble
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, with No.2 Swishgobango, No.5 Costa Star and No.12 Al's Gal the ones likely to be in the first wave
Punty read:
This is a proper sit-and-sprint maiden where position matters more than people like to admit. No.5 Costa Star gets the map advantage from barrier 2 and has been knocking on the door, which is why the market's leaning that way. No.2 Swishgobango can sit handy enough to get every chance, while No.3 All King's is the one you forgive a touch because the gear tweak looks like the trainer is trying to wake it up after being snagged wide last time.
If they crawl, the backmarkers are going to need a miracle and a bit of Harry Potter magic to get into the fight. No.6 Danea Rock is the roughie with a path if the race gets muddled and the leaders overthink it, but it's one of those races where the first horse to land in the right spot can make the others look a bit silly. This is not the race to be cute; it's the race to be with the horse that gets the cleanest trip.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)
1. Costa Star (No.5) — $4.30 / $1.75
Bet $14.50 Each Way ($7.25W + $7.25P), return $31.17 (wins) / $12.69 (places)
Prob 17.0% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.95x
Why Heavily favoured by the map from barrier 2, keeps finding the line, and this slow-run maiden should give her every chance to grind them down.
2. Swishgobango (No.2) — $5.00 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.2% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.81x
Why Has the right map to sit in the first few and the interference last time means the form line isn't as ugly as it looks.
3. All King's (No.3) — $5.10 / $2.00
Bet $5.50 Place, return $11.00
Prob 17.0% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 1.03x
Why The gear switch could sharpen him up, and if he can improve off the wide run last start, he's right in the money.
Roughie: Danea Rock (No.6) — $10.10 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.80x
Why The form's been a bit of a horror movie, but the trainer has him in the right stable lane and if the tempo is a total snooze-fest he can pinch a place late.
Race 2 – The short-course pressure cooker
Race type: Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with No.6 Violent likely to be right in the action and No.7 Hot Nova, No.11 Kimberley Currency and No.2 Casino Royale stalking the speed
Punty read:
This one has a clear shape: No.6 Violent is the horse everyone has to deal with, because it maps beautifully and has enough grunt to hold its spot. No.7 Hot Nova has drifted, which is always a little eyebrow-raising, but it still draws to be handy and the race shape isn't going to let it hide. No.2 Casino Royale gets a nice enough run from barrier 5 and looks the one most likely to be running through the line when the whips come out.
The danger is overcommitting to the early speed and leaving the back half of the field with too much to do. No.3 Hillside Monarch is the roughie the market doesn't love, but it has the right kind of place profile if things get messy. Still, this is not a race where you want to start making up fantasy stories about the tailenders storming home like it's the last minute of a grand final. The front and midfield horses should have this by the throat.
Top 3 + Roughie ($21.00 pool)
1. Violent (No.6) — $2.25 / $1.25
Bet $10.00 Win, return $22.50
Prob 30.1% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 0.95x
Why The map is a gift, the horse is in form, and from here it should get every possible chance to dictate terms.
2. Hot Nova (No.7) — $7.95 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.38x
Why The drift is a small red flag, but the barrier and on-pace profile still keep it in the mix if it gets an economical run.
3. Casino Royale (No.2) — $8.45 / $2.50
Bet $11.00 Place, return $27.50
Prob 11.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.38x
Why Maps to stalk the hot speed and has enough class to swoop into the frame if the leaders go too hard.
Roughie: Hillside Monarch (No.3) — $14.25 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.5% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.82x
Why Not a ripping win play, but if the leaders turn it into a donnybrook, this one can hang around and clunk a place.
Race 3 – The mile grinder
Race type: Handicap, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, with No.1 Corn Cob and No.3 Belvedere Rock in the main winning lane and the on-speed horses likely controlling the shape
Punty read:
No.3 Belvedere Rock is the class horse in the race and the one that gets first crack at punting glory. The fresh gear looks like a proper little nudge from the stable, and this is the sort of setup where a horse with a bit of quality can sit midfield and let the others overcook it. No.1 Corn Cob is the map horse from barrier 10, but the drift plus the last-start physical issue has me treating it with a touch of respect and a touch of suspicion, which is basically the punting equivalent of meeting your ex at the pub.
No.6 Ironclad Boy is the sneaky one with the right kind of run from an inside gate, and if they roll along even a fraction more than expected, it can clunk into the finish. No.10 The King's Uncle is the roughie with a proper path if the leaders get cute, but the big drift says the market's not exactly writing love letters to it. This race should be a chess match, not a slugfest, and the winner will probably be the one that gets a clean lane and doesn't get bailed up at the wrong moment.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Belvedere Rock (No.3) — $2.48 / $1.30
Bet $7.00 Win, return $17.36
Prob 18.9% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.66x
Why Best horse in the race, loves the trip, and the little gear tweak can eke out the extra bit needed to get the job done.
2. Corn Cob (No.1) — $4.20 / $1.55
Bet $7.50 Place, return $11.62
Prob 17.5% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.00x
Why The map is okay enough to keep it in the race, and the last-start excuse means there’s a legitimate bounce-back angle.
3. Ironclad Boy (No.6) — $7.70 / $2.25
Bet $4.50 Place, return $10.12
Prob 12.6% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 1.19x
Why Draws to do no work, gets a decent enough tempo to use, and the second-up profile says there’s improvement here.
Roughie: The King's Uncle (No.10) — $12.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.89x
Why Big drift isn't the kind of thing that gets the blood pumping, but if they turn it into a sit-and-sprint, it can still lob into the money late.
Race 4 – The 1000m knife fight
Race type: Handicap, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo, with No.6 Kunapipi up there early and No.4 Versaille, No.2 Devils I and No.9 Cozzies Choice all in the firing line
Punty read:
This is the race where the map is everything and the first 200m will tell you half the story. No.4 Versaille is the one the model wants on top, and you can see why: the horse has a good enough profile for first-up, has the class to handle this grade, and the tempo should be strong enough to let it sit where it wants. No.2 Devils I is the obvious short one, but it's short enough that you can almost hear the mug punters lining up to get crushed if it doesn't get the run of the race.
No.1 Cheeky Charlotte is a bloody interesting one from barrier 3 with a nice enough map and a gear change that might sharpen the thing up. No.5 She Is All Magic is the roughie that has more upside than the market wants to admit, but the drift means you don't want to start marrying it to the altar too quickly. In a 1000m sprint at Carnarvon, if you burn petrol early and don't settle, you're toast. It's basically the opening scene of Top Gun: Maverick - fast, noisy, and one mistake can blow the whole mission.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)
1. Versaille (No.4) — $4.05 / $1.72
Bet $12.00 Each Way ($6.00W + $6.00P), return $24.30 (wins) / $10.32 (places)
Prob 19.4% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 1.05x
Why Has the first-up profile to go well, maps in the right half of the field, and this looks a race where tactical speed will beat heroics.
2. Devils I (No.2) — $3.50 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.73x
Why The obvious danger, but the price is skinny enough that there's not much meat on the bone unless everything falls perfectly.
3. Cheeky Charlotte (No.1) — $7.70 / $2.70
Bet $8.00 Place, return $21.60
Prob 10.3% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.15x
Why Gets the lovely draw, can sit close, and the new front plates might just be the little nudge it needs.
Roughie: She Is All Magic (No.5) — $11.00 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.4% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.88x
Why The gear shuffle is a big clue and the first-up record says it can fire fresh, but the drift means you want proof before you go in hard.
Race 5 – The staying-speed hybrid
Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo, with No.1 Bigdayonit likely spearheading and No.6 Swexan, No.7 What About Moi and No.12 Yes I Believe settling right behind
Punty read:
No.6 Swexan is the map horse and the one I want in the fold if I'm building this race from scratch. The draw is fine, the tempo suits, and it looks ready to get the perfect suck-run before peeling out. No.1 Bigdayonit is the obvious pace engine and will give you a sight, while No.12 Yes I Believe is the classier short-priced type the market keeps trusting whether the price is kind or not. That's the sort of horse that can win, but at the current number you don't want to be the bloke paying full retail for yesterday's sandwich.
No.4 Let's Sea has been backed like the locals found a winning scratchie, and you can understand the enthusiasm because it maps nicely from the inside and gets a handy weight pull. The roughie No.2 On Just Terms is the one that needs the race to collapse, the leaders to be overcooked, and the moon to be in the right house. If that sounds like a lot, that's because it is. Still, this is a race where the speed horses should get their chance, and the first horse to land in the right rhythm probably wins.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.00 pool)
1. Swexan (No.6) — $4.80 / $1.90
Bet $17.00 Each Way ($8.50W + $8.50P), return $40.80 (wins) / $16.15 (places)
Prob 16.8% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.06x
Why Maps beautifully, has the right sort of form for this setup, and the race shape looks tailor-made for a stalking-and-pounce ride.
2. Bigdayonit (No.1) — $7.95 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.53x
Why Genuine leader, honest as the day is long, and if he gets cheap fractions he can pinch this from the front.
3. Yes I Believe (No.12) — $3.00 / $1.40
Bet $5.00 Place, return $7.00
Prob 16.8% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.68x
Why The market keeps it short for a reason, and the class is there, but the price is too skinny to go wild on.
Roughie: On Just Terms (No.2) — $18.50 / $4.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.7% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 1.04x
Why Needs the race shape to get ugly and a decent tempo to run at, which is possible, but you're asking plenty.
Race 6 – The closer with bite
Race type: Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with No.6 Mystery Minute and No.2 Weapons Hot in the firing line, plus No.4 Gold Spy and No.1 Simply Rosso keeping them honest
Punty read:
No.6 Mystery Minute is the anchor here, and it deserves that status because it maps like a dream and has the sort of consistency you want when the day starts getting late. No.2 Weapons Hot is the obvious danger, but the drift on a few around it means the market isn't exactly stamping its feet in certainty. No.4 Gold Spy is the one that can come with the right kind of finish if the speed horse gets softened up, and from barrier 2 it can save enough petrol to be dangerous late.
No.1 Simply Rosso is the sneaky roughie with a clean enough map if the others get into a scrap, and the place profile says it's not just some random dart throw. No.3 Shooting Kontiki has been punted like a leper with a drum, which is never ideal, and if that drift keeps going, the confidence meter drops straight through the floor. This should be a race where the smart horses sit close, the leaders don't get a free lunch, and the winner probably comes from the first half dozen in running.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.00 pool)
1. Mystery Minute (No.6) — $3.40 / $1.50
Bet $9.50 Each Way ($4.75W + $4.75P), return $16.15 (wins) / $7.12 (places)
Prob 19.3% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 0.87x
Why The map is tailor-made, the horse is rock-hard fit, and this is exactly the sort of race where a handy runner can box-seat and kick away.
2. Weapons Hot (No.2) — $5.10 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 0.85x
Why Right in the mix on form and gets the right kind of run, but the price is about fair rather than juicy.
3. Gold Spy (No.4) — $5.35 / $2.00
Bet $6.50 Place, return $13.00
Prob 17.7% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 1.23x
Why Capable of finishing over the top if the speed gets honest, and the map should let it conserve enough energy to strike.
Roughie: Simply Rosso (No.1) — $11.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.4% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.87x
Why The map is kinder than the market is giving it credit for, and if the tempo gets just a touch hot, it can bob up at odds.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
QUADDIE (R3-6)
Smart: 1,3,6,10 / 4,2,1,5 / 6,1,12,5 / 6,4,2,1 (256 combos x $0.25 = $65.00) -- 25% flexi
A proper bar fight of a quaddie with four open legs; tight enough to be playable, but one bad leg and you're staring at the ceiling.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Carnarvon sprints are all about the first 200m
The 1000m races on this deck are brutal if you miss the jump or burn too much early. That's why No.1 Cheeky Charlotte, No.6 Swexan, and No.6 Mystery Minute are the sort of runners you want onside - they can map and settle without needing a miracle.
2 - The market is telling a few stories, but not all of them are happy ones
The support for Cozzies Choice, Precast, and Deal Obtained is interesting, but the drifts on Hot Nova, The King's Uncle, and Shooting Kontiki are the louder alarm bells. In races like this, a drift isn't always doom, but when the map already looks messy, it can be the market waving a red flag in your face.
3 - The inside lane is the place to live until proven otherwise
With the rail true and rain lurking, the runners that can save ground and hold a forward spot are the ones to respect most. That's why the low-draw map horses like Costa Star, Cheeky Charlotte, and Swexan are such handy plays - they can do the work without travelling the extra metres.
THE LOOSE UNIT LOUNGE
This is a card where the map can make you look like a genius or a goose in the space of one furlong, so don't get greedy and don't get precious. Stick with the cleanest runs, respect the pace, and if one of the roughies knocks you over, cop it on the chin and reload tomorrow. Gamble Responsibly.
