It's a 7-race card that smells like pace decisions and wet-track sweat, with a couple of absolute money-magnets (shorties) and a few races where the value is hiding like a bloke in the toilets at closing time.

My Big 3 spine for the day is all about horses that can win without needing a bunch of miracles. Latin Lights in Race 1 is your pick that just keeps doing the job, Aurora Effect in Race 3 is the staying-power cheat code for this surface, and Miss Trump in Race 4 is the 'turn the key, drive forward' type. Between them, you're basically building a multi on a short list of legit map-and-match winners.

Punty's take: Grafton on a Soft 5 is like a movie where everyone thinks they're the hero, then the plot twist is the track is still chewing people up in the final 200. From the jump, I want horses that can either control a position early or at least keep their feet underneath them so they're still in the fight when the field strings out. You'll see it in the betting too, short prices that firm for a reason, and drifters that are basically screaming 'pray for luck.'

Race 1 is a classic maiden opener where the pace is slow and the Soft 5 turns runs into survival. Latin Lights just looks like the type that can handle the tempo, and with that sort of place confidence on offer, she's my 'let's not overthink it' starter.

Race 2 is where you start flexing your patience. It's a bunch of first-timers and undercooked runs, so the map and the setup matter. I'm backing Qui Rouge as the leader of the pack, but this race also screams 'one turn and someone's intruding late' energy.

Race 3 is staying ground for the brave and the fit. Aurora Effect has the kind of profile that gets stronger late on a Soft track, and Mahuika Maroi is your danger if she finds clear running. It's one of those races where the winner probably doesn't come from the worst spot, they come from the spot where they can keep rolling.

Then Race 4, Miss Trump is basically the front-running press conference. You get her where she wants to be, she does the rest. After that, Race 5 and Race 6 are where the value hunters come out, but you need to respect how easily Soft 5 punishes wide, slow starts, and traffic.

Finally Race 7 is open-bunch territory. No one's a banker, so you're picking the best story, the best run pattern, and the best lane luck, then you're praying the field breaks the way you drew it.

What it means for you: If you're an aggressive punter, your aggression is best spent on the races where the map and confidence line up, which is basically Race 1, Race 3, and Race 4. That's your Big 3 spine, build it once, and you can sleep at the pub.

For the rest of the card, especially the Quaddie legs, you go wide with intent, not wide because you're bored. Soft 5 turns Quaddies into a survival game, and open legs are where dreams die. In these lanes, you're betting on the most likely structure of the races, plus a bit of 'if it lands, you win big' chaos.
