Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Gunnedah, head to https://punty.ai/tips/gunnedah-2026-05-24
Rightio Loose Units, Gunnedah on a Soft 5 with the rail true is the sort of card that can look tidy on paper and still mug you at the post if you get greedy. There’s a fair bit of money already wandering around the place, but a few of these markets have been absolutely rinsed and a couple of the roughies are sitting there like a dodgy kebab at 2am — tempting, but you’d better know what you’re doing.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Gunnedah, 1000-2150m card
Rail: True
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play honest, with on-pace runners getting their chance but swoopers not completely cooked)
Weather: Mostly sunny, 11°C, humidity 92%, wind 14km/h SE (watch for a bit of sting early and a breeze down the lane)
Early lane guess: True rail should be fair enough, but I’d still expect stalkers and runners with a turn of foot to get the first crack
Tempo profile: A proper mixed bag — two sprint burners, a couple of trench-war maidens, and then the last two races are full-blown smoke alarms
Jockeys to follow:
Aaron Bullock — he’s got some of the sharpest rides on the card and when he lands on a horse with a map, he usually doesn’t muck around.
Ben Looker — plenty of key rides across the day, and he’s the bloke you want when the race turns into a tactical scrap.
Clayton Gallagher — has a stack of live mounts and a habit of placing them where they can finish the job instead of burning petrol early.
Stables to respect:
Brett & Georgie Cavanough (8 runners) — multiple live chances across the card, and the market keeps poking at their runners for a reason.
Annabel & Rob Archibald (4 runners) — not a silent team today; a couple have been absolutely hoovered up in betting.
K A Lees (4 runners) — if one of theirs is meant, they can lob right into the finish like a shark in a goldfish bowl.
Punty's take: This meeting’s got a real split personality. Race 1 and Race 4 want a bit of patience, Race 2 and Race 9 want you thinking like a sprinter with a caffeine problem, and Races 5, 8 and 9 are where the card can go full Mad Max if the leaders go hell for leather. The Soft 5 and true rail mean you don’t need to be a total fence-hugging lunatic, but the horses with tactical speed and a clean run are the ones I’d be trusting most. The market has already done the usual pub trick of overcooking a few obvious ones — Currumbin Alley, Portofino, Tavros — so the smarter play is to separate the genuine anchors from the pretty-looking favourites who’ve been flogged to death.
You’ve also got a few stables sniffing around with intent, especially the Cavanough crew and the Archibolds, plus K A Lees with a couple of runners who can bob up if the race shape turns in their favour. The key is not to get seduced by a short price just because the money’s arrived. Some of these are legit, some are just being steamrolled because the ring’s had a bet. Big difference, legends. Big difference.
What it means for you: I’d be a bit more aggressive in the races where the pace is genuine and the value is sitting outside the obvious favourite — that’s Race 2, Race 4 and Race 6 territory. Those are the ones where a place play or each-way angle makes more sense than trying to punch the favourite in the mouth for the win and praying. Race 1 is the classy staying slog where the consistent types matter; Race 9 is the one where the early speed brigade could set it up for something sitting off them. That’s where you want to be alive with the right horse, not just the right price.
The sequence bets are more for entertainment and bragging rights than a safe bank deposit — and the card as a whole has a few chaos legs that can blow up a coupon quicker than a schoolkid with a Whiz Fizz. So keep the singles disciplined, back the horses with the map and the fitness, and don’t go getting cute in the roughie band unless the shape is screaming at you. If you’re going to get involved, get involved where the race actually gives you a path to winning, not where the form guide just looks romantic. That’s how you keep the damage down and still have a crack.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Currumbin Alley (Race 1, No.1) — $1.82
Why He’s the honest little grinder of the day — keeps turning up, keeps fighting, and if the race becomes a staying scrap rather than a crawl, he’s the one with the best class of effort.
2 - What A Scandal (Race 2, No.2) — $2.20
Why Lovely sprint map, hard fit, and the market’s already had a sniff for good reason — looks the horse they all have to run down.
3 - Daisy Duck (Race 4, No.9) — $3.60
Why The favourite might not be a gift, but she’s got the form, the support, and enough upside to be the one you want on the spine in a race where plenty of others are still learning their trade.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~14.43 = ~$144.30 collect
Race 1 – Pursehouse Rural Gunnedah Showcase Plate
Race type: CLASS 1, 2150m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, with Currumbin Alley, Thundering Falcon, Bold Rouge and Don't Back Down all disadvantaged by the crawl
Punty read: This is a proper old-school staying puzzle: not much pace, a few horses wanting a breather, and a map that could get ugly for the ones stuck doing the donkey work. Currumbin Alley is the type who just keeps finding, but the market’s already crushed the price. Villa Castina and Lots To Love are the ones who can sit close enough to pounce if the tempo finally wakes up. Tipsy Miss is the fun little sleeper — the money’s been there, the profile’s there, and if the front half of the field starts walking, she can be right in the firing line.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.50 pool)
1. Currumbin Alley (No.1) — $1.82 / $1.17
Bet $7.50 Place, return $8.77
Prob 15.5% | Place: 43.8% | Value: 0.36x
Why The honest bastard just keeps hitting the line and the form is too solid to ignore, but he’s been punted into the floor. If he gets a sensible run in transit, he’s still the one they have to beat.
2. Villa Castina (No.11) — $6.50 / $1.95
Bet $9.00 Place, return $17.55
Prob 13.9% | Place: 40.0% | Value: 1.15x
Why The money’s been there and the stable knows how to have one ready when the penny drops. She’s got the right kind of profile to be trucking into it late.
3. Lots To Love (No.2) — $3.50 / $1.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 38.0% | Value: 0.58x
Why Sound at both runs this prep and looks to be reaching peak fitness, but the wide alley and the grindy trip mean he’s got to be ridden with a bit of patience.
Roughie: Tipsy Miss (No.10) — $26.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 33.8% | Value: 3.75x
Why She’s been smashed in betting and if the race turns into a survival contest late, she’s the sort that can sneak into the exotics when others are gasping.
Race 2 – Cool Blue Ice Showcase Hcp
Race type: HANDICAP, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with What A Scandal and Miss Andreas rolling forward; the leaders will need to be sharp but not suicidal
Punty read: This is the fast-food race on the card — in and out, no time to blink, no time for excuses. What A Scandal has the map and the fitness edge, and that’s dangerous in a 1000m dash. Tigella is the value saver because she’s got the place profile to lob into the finish if the leaders go too hard, while Karavice has the market whisper behind her. Honniball Drive is the one you keep on the radar if the race turns tactical from the inside draw.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. What A Scandal (No.2) — $2.20 / $1.25
Bet $10.50 Place, return $13.12
Prob 23.8% | Place: 69.9% | Value: 0.69x
Why Narrowly missed then went bang next time despite facing the breeze — she’s hard fit, maps to get every chance, and this looks another one where she can boss the tempo.
2. Tigella (No.5) — $17.50 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 51.8% | Value: 3.54x
Why The numbers scream value and she’s a lively little bomber if the front runners start cooking each other.
3. Karavice (No.3) — $6.20 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.9% | Place: 35.9% | Value: 0.80x
Why Trialled nicely and the support is there, but she still has to prove she’s got the toe to hold these 1000m bullets.
Roughie: Frog Rock (No.4) — $28.00 / $5.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 26.3% | Value: 2.55x
Why Big drift, no hiding place, but if the race turns into a proper burn-up, he’s the sort who can clunk on late and blow up the trifecta.
Race 3 – Gunnedah Bulk Freighters Country Boosted Showcase Mdn Hcp
Race type: MAIDEN, 1250m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo, with Ordinary Angel likely to roll, and a few backmarkers getting their chance if they can keep up early
Punty read: This is the sort of maiden where a few of them are still figuring out which end of the horse points forward. Northern Eagle has the class of a horse people want to see win, but the race shape isn’t a free kick for him. All Too Sheik is the obvious danger with the money behind it, while Artie's Magic is the roughie with the best actual path to winning if the speed gets hot and the leaders start gasping. Blackstone Plaza is the wild debutant with a bit of gear change noise — not for the faint-hearted, but this is maiden racing, so faint hearts can get nicked.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)
1. Northern Eagle (No.10) — $3.60 / $1.60
Bet $5.50 Each Way ($2.75W + $2.75P), return $9.90 (wins) / $4.40 (places)
Prob 16.4% | Place: 49.4% | Value: 0.89x
Why The market’s with him and he’s got the right kind of form to be close again, but this is not a walk-up race — he’ll need to be switched on from the jump.
2. All Too Sheik (No.5) — $5.35 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 41.4% | Value: 0.95x
Why Has been thereabouts and the money’s been steady; if he gets a clean run in a genuine tempo, he’s right in the fight.
3. Blackstone Plaza (No.7) — $7.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 30.8% | Value: 0.95x
Why Debutant with a gear switch-up and a bit of stable intent, but first starters can be like a new Marvel movie — plenty of hype, not always the goods.
Roughie: Artie's Magic (No.6) — $10.30 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 29.4% | Value: 1.24x
Why This is the one I’d keep under the sofa cushions — the horse has enough late strength to capitalise if the front bunch overdo it.
Race 4 – C L Rural Showcase Super Maiden Plate
Race type: MAIDEN, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo with a few disadvantaged runners needing luck; the race can get messy if they dawdle early
Punty read: This is the sort of maiden where the top pick looks dangerous but not bulletproof, and that’s exactly the kind of race that can chew through bets if you get greedy. Daisy Duck has been backed as if she’s already won the Oaks, and the support makes sense because she’s the class horse in the race. Fined For Speeding is the honest each-way type who should keep grinding, while Fortheo has the right profile to sneak into the finish if the leaders go pedestrian. Uno Fred and Zamalek are the sort of runners that can improve sharply with gear tweaks, but they’re more “watch the replay and kick yourself later” than “bank it now”.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.50 pool)
1. Daisy Duck (No.9) — $3.60 / $1.55
Bet $10.00 Each Way ($5.00W + $5.00P), return $18.00 (wins) / $7.75 (places)
Prob 23.2% | Place: 73.9% | Value: 0.78x
Why The market has been all over her and you can see why — the form is tidy, the race isn’t deep, and if she holds position early she’s the one they all have to run at.
2. Fined For Speeding (No.2) — $3.85 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 51.8% | Value: 0.83x
Why Hard fit, sound at all four runs this prep, and he’s the sort who can grind out a cheque even if the race is more stop-start than a dodgy tram.
3. Fortheo (No.3) — $10.10 / $3.30
Bet $3.50 Each Way ($1.75W + $1.75P), return $17.68 (wins) / $5.77 (places)
Prob 8.7% | Place: 34.7% | Value: 1.04x
Why Blinkers again and a proper “nearly there” profile — if the race falls into his lap late, he’s the sort to hit the line like a horse who knows he owes you one.
Roughie: Zamalek (No.7) — $10.80 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 30.9% | Value: 0.85x
Why Blinkers first time can wake one up in a hurry, and if he jumps clean he’s the kind of smokey that can make the exotics sweat.
Race 5 – Streater Family Butchery Showcase Hcp
Race type: CLASS 1, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with a few on-pacers lining up but plenty of traffic to sort out
Punty read: This one’s a right old country raffle — the sort of race where the favourite looks short enough to need a lie down and the roughies are all waving at you. Smart Scud is the sort of horse that makes the numbers people drool, but the model’s telling you to sit on your hands because the race shape and the pool don’t really reward that kind of adventure. Portofino is the obvious market magnet, though he’s been mauled down to a skinny quote and looks more like a no-fuss anchor than a betting thrill. The real fun is in the second line of runners — Hinto, Sweet Justice and the others who can land a blow if the pace is honest and the favourite gets trapped in a tactical scrap.
Top 3 + Roughie ($0.00 pool)
1. Smart Scud (No.6) — $25.00 / $6.00
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $187.50 (wins) / $45.00 (places)
Prob 11.7% | Place: 40.8% | Value: 4.22x
Why Has the form line and the late punch to be right in this, but the market hasn’t come for him and the race is too messy to go all-in.
2. Portofino (No.1) — $1.81 / $1.17
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.9% | Place: 28.8% | Value: 0.20x
Why Dominant fresh win last time, but he’s been hammered into silly-short territory and that’s not where the value lives.
3. Magurtz (No.5) — $8.50 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.4% | Place: 27.4% | Value: 0.91x
Why Not without a shout on the soft ground, but he’s got to lift to justify being in the staking conversation.
Roughie: Hinto (No.10) — $24.50 / $6.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 2.20x
Why He’s the sort of blowout runner that can give the exotics a fright if the race gets strung out and the leaders go too hard.
Race 6 – Haires Bus Service Country Boosted Showcase
Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1250m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Arapawa, St Roy and Freedom To Roam all wanting similar territory
Punty read: This is one of those races where the model wants to keep the handbrake on. Arapawa has the right map and the right fitness profile, but he’s short enough that you’re not exactly being invited to the buffet. Indi Springs is all promise and no price, while Deebo is the nice value line in the field if you’re looking at the race through the right lens. Magic Flyer is the roughie that actually interests me because the back-half run last time and the rise to 1250m suit the shape of this race a lot better than most of these “hope and pray” types.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Arapawa (No.4) — $3.05 / $1.37
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), return $19.82 (wins) / $8.91 (places)
Prob 13.4% | Place: 42.0% | Value: 0.56x
Why He maps well, he’s fit enough, and the stable/jockey combo has the right sort of feel for a soft-ground country sprint.
2. Indi Springs (No.6) — $2.48 / $1.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 36.3% | Value: 0.38x
Why Honest type, but the price is skinny and the shape of the race doesn’t scream “free money”.
3. Deebo (No.1) — $9.40 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.5% | Place: 34.3% | Value: 1.35x
Why Resumes well and he’s a genuine player at the trip, but he’s still a touch on trust rather than certainty.
Roughie: Magic Flyer (No.2) — $16.50 / $4.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.6% | Place: 31.7% | Value: 2.16x
Why If the back-half run from fresh tightened him up and the move to 1250m helps, he’s the kind of swooper who can make this look silly late.
Race 7 – Ultra Fleet Country Boosted Showcase
Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1250m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, with Zoucratic getting the ideal run if he gets away cleanly
Punty read: This is a funny little race — looks like a sprint, feels like a chess match, and could be decided by who gets the best chair at the front of the queue. Dub is the class act but has been drifting a touch, Ellofadude has been smashed in betting and probably should be right in the finish, and Sir Herridah is the proper danger if the map turns kind. Vendor is the roughie that makes the long lunch feel a bit more dangerous, while Lord Of The Sun is the one who can rebound if the start behaves itself.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.50 pool)
1. Dub (No.1) — $4.65 / $1.90
Bet $7.00 Each Way ($3.50W + $3.50P), return $16.28 (wins) / $6.65 (places)
Prob 12.3% | Place: 38.7% | Value: 0.78x
Why Solid enough fresh and he’s the type to sit close and fight on, but the drift says the ring isn’t exactly throwing confetti.
2. Ellofadude (No.6) — $3.90 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.5% | Place: 33.8% | Value: 0.56x
Why He’s been backed like a horse with a secret and that’s enough to keep him front and centre — if the support is right, he’s the one they’ll have to hold out.
3. Sir Herridah (No.7) — $4.20 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 33.7% | Value: 0.59x
Why He’s got the right old-country profile and enough talent to be in the finish, but the staking model wants the others.
Roughie: Vendor (No.8) — $9.40 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 28.9% | Value: 1.12x
Why He’s the sort of horse that can steal the race if the leaders leave the door ajar and the tempo gets muddled.
Race 8 – Mannion Drilling Big Dance Eligibility Gunnedah Showcase Cup
Race type: OPEN, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, but Sonofdec, Rajnish and Delrico are all working against the pattern
Punty read: This mile is a proper minefield. Tavros is the obvious favourite, but he’s priced like a horse the market has already decided is a gift and the model isn’t swallowing that for a second. Luskaire has been smashed from outer space and has the form to justify plenty of it, while Pensativa and Smoke On The Water are the sort of runners who can sneak into the race if the leaders start loafing. Sonofdec is the spicy one — drifted out, but the map is still sitting pretty enough to make him a live threat if you forgive the market wobble. The rest are basically there to make the back half of the field look busy.
Top 3 + Roughie ($0.00 pool)
1. Sonofdec (No.4) — $9.40 / $2.70
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $70.50 (wins) / $20.25 (places)
Prob 12.1% | Place: 43.7% | Value: 1.55x
Why Drifted out, but he still has enough class and a decent enough map to be the one that could sting them if the pressure goes on.
2. Tavros (No.1) — $1.81 / $1.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.7% | Place: 42.4% | Value: 0.29x
Why He’s the horse everyone wants to own, but at that price you’re basically buying a ticket to watch someone else enjoy the dividend.
3. Pensativa (No.7) — $9.15 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 38.2% | Value: 1.28x
Why Maps nicely enough and has the right sort of tactical speed, but the finish has to come to him rather than the other way round.
Roughie: Luskaire (No.2) — $12.50 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 37.8% | Value: 1.73x
Why The market absolutely loved him and the class drop helps, so if the race turns into a tactical sit-and-sprint, he’s the sort who can clatter into the placings.
Race 9 – Courthouse Hotel Gunnedah Showcase Lightning Hcp
Race type: HANDICAP, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot tempo, with a stack of leaders and on-pacers — this is the sort of race that can melt down in a hurry
Punty read: This is the mayhem race of the day. If the leaders go at each other like two blokes arguing over the last schooner, the back-half runners get their shot and the whole thing turns into a finish-line knife fight. Who Goes There is the value play with the best upside, Rhythm Is A Dancer and Live To Rise are the others that can ping late if the speed is ferocious, and Castlebar Road is the wild old blowout that can absolutely ruin a clean quaddie if the favourites are busy doing too much. Tough Guy looks the obvious type on paper, but the price is skinny enough to make you squint.
Top 3 + Roughie ($0.00 pool)
1. Who Goes There (No.1) — $15.25 / $4.60
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $114.38 (wins) / $34.50 (places)
Prob 9.5% | Place: 27.3% | Value: 2.08x
Why Fresh-up and ready to roll, and if the leaders turn this into a blaze, he’s the one who can swoop through the wreckage.
2. Hellcibell (No.6) — $5.45 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 25.3% | Value: 0.68x
Why Has the right map to be close enough, but the price is a touch annoying and the race shape is more chaos than comfort.
3. Tough Guy (No.9) — $3.05 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.4% | Place: 24.5% | Value: 0.37x
Why He’ll be prominent and could absolutely pinch it if everything falls his way, but he’s short enough to be no friend of the mug punter.
Roughie: Vierville (No.10) — $9.60 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 23.9% | Value: 1.13x
Why Handy old sprinter with enough early toe to be dangerous if the front half turns into a bonfire.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
EARLY QUADDIE (R2–R5)
Smart: 2, 5, 3, 6 / 10, 5, 7, 6 / 9, 2, 3, 6 / 6, 1, 5, 10 (256 combos x $0.20 = $50) — 20% flexi
Four open legs, no free lunches and no room for the faint-hearted — this is a proper chaos quad, not a comfy stroll to the bar.
QUADDIE (R6–R9)
Smart: 4, 6, 1, 2 / 1, 6, 7, 8 / 4, 1, 7, 2 / 1, 6, 9, 10 (256 combos x $0.18 = $46) — 31% flexi
This is four straight minefields; the flexi keeps it alive, but it’s still a proper sweat and more entertainment than banker territory.
BIG 6 (R4–R9)
Smart: 9 / 6 / 4 / 1 / 4 / 1 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2) — 200% flexi
One horse a leg is as skinny as it gets — if you’re playing this, you’re basically backing the narrative and hoping the card behaves itself.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Money is chasing the obvious yardsticks
Currumbin Alley, Portofino, Luskaire and Who Goes There have all had serious attention, but the danger is paying full freight after the horse has already been mugged into short odds. The market’s telling a story; your job is to work out whether it’s a true tale or just punters getting hypnotised by a shiny coat.
2 - The last two races are where the card can go feral
Race 8 and Race 9 have enough pace and enough uncertainty to blow up a tidy ticket. If you’re hunting a blowout, that’s where the swoopers and the horses with a late dig can make you look clever in a hurry — or like a goose if the leaders somehow get away with murder.
3 - Avoid the lazy roughie temptation
The history says the chunky $20-$50 pops are a trap more often than not, so don’t just punt by price. The smarter roughies on this card are the ones with a proper path to winning — Magic Flyer, Artie's Magic, Who Goes There — not just the horse paying a fat number because the market got bored.
THE LOOSE UNIT LOUNGE
It’s a country card with a few bankers, a few smoke bombs, and enough pace pressure to make the late races proper live-wire stuff. Keep your powder dry in the chaos races, back the ones with the best map and the best attitude, and don’t be ashamed to take the place money when the win price looks like it’s been smoked by the bookies’ barbecue. Gamble Responsibly.
