Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Mildura, head to https://punty.ai/tips/mildura-2026-05-24
Rightio Loose Units, Mildura on a Soft 5 with the rail True is the sort of card where the form guide looks tidy right up until the last 150m, when half the field starts paddling and some grubby little grinder with the right run swoops through like Darth Vader at the end of Empire.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Mildura, 1000-2000m card
Rail: True Entire Circuit
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play fair early, then reward horses with a sit and a bit of cover)
Weather: Possible shower, 11°C, humidity 90%, wind 9km/h NE (watch for a late chop-up if the drizzle turns it slippery)
Early lane guess: True rail should be fine, but I still want cover and a lane off the fence if the ground starts to chew
Tempo profile: A proper mixed bag - the sprints look genuine, the middle-distance races look tactical, and the quaddie legs are where the chaos starts to bark
Jockeys to follow:
Ms Linda Meech — knows how to nurse a horse through a grind and rarely wastes a ride in these soft-ground scrappers
Neil Farley — on a stack of live rides and happy to get rolling when the map says roll
Ms Alana Kelly — gets a few handy set-ups across the card and can nick one by being in the right spot at the right time
Stables to respect:
Patrick Payne (5 runners) — has live chances scattered everywhere, from Powering Away to Himeno to Noble Style; that sort of spread means the yard is here to have a proper crack
Ms H Burns (5 runners) — plenty of gear tinkering and a few map-friendly runners; when this mob lands the setup, they can lob a sneaky one
Ms J Duncan (3 runners) — not flashy, but there’s intent in the right spots and a couple of these rough-end types are a sniff if the race shape gets weird
Punty's take:
This meeting feels like a proper Mildura card: a couple of cleaner races where the smart money can get a toe-hold, then a bunch of ugly little brawls where you need a compass and a prayer. The Soft 5 and true rail mean it’s not a dead set backmarker track, but if you’re wide, unbalanced, or stuck in the cheap seats without cover, you’re in for a world of pain.
The clearest story of the day is that the sprints have some sting in them, while the 2000m races look more like chess than drag racing. Powering Away, Nightynight and Himeno are the anchors I’d want to lean on; after that, you’re into races where the map, the track, and a bit of racecraft matter more than a pretty form line. It’s more Moneyball than Fast & Furious.
Patrick Payne looks set to have a big say with a bunch of runners that actually map to the right kind of run, while Ms H Burns has the sort of card where gear changes and placement can suddenly make a horse look ten lengths better. Ms Linda Meech and Neil Farley are the hoops I’d keep front of mind when the race turns tactical - both know how to get a horse into the right pocket without turning the thing into a circus.
What it means for you:
Don’t go full hero mode early. Race 1 and Race 5 are your cleaner anchor races; that’s where the day starts to make sense. In the messy middle stuff - Race 4, Race 6 and Race 7 - I’d be leaning more to place and each-way than trying to be a tough guy on win-only stabs.
If the track plays fair, the horses with tactical speed and a soft sit are going to punch above their price. If it starts to hold water and get a bit gluey, the swoopers with cover become dangerous very quickly. That’s why I’m happy to keep the Big 3 spine tight and let the quaddie be the bit where we have a proper swing without pretending we’re invincible.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Powering Away (Race 1, No.1) — $2.44
Why He’s the one with the cleanest blend of early position and ticking-over form, and in a race with genuine heat up front, that usually means he gets first crack when they straighten.
2 - Nightynight (Race 3, No.8) — $3.86
Why This is the proper grinder’s race and he’s the one set to be humming late when the front end starts blowing its guts out.
3 - Himeno (Race 5, No.3) — $6.80
Why Resuming with a sweet draw and a debut win in the locker - if he jumps clean and lands where he should, the rest are chasing him home.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~64.05 = ~$640.45 collect
Race 1 – Maiden Pressure Cooker
Race type: Maiden, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace; No.4 Cheers To Us looks the likely leader, with No.1 Powering Away and No.9 Restless Wind sitting right on the chop-out lane
Punty read: This looks like a classic little 1100m sting-out where the front end can do a bit too much work and hand the race to the horse sitting off the furnace. No.1 Powering Away maps to get the right sort of tow, while No.9 Restless Wind is the obvious danger if the speed melts just enough. No.4 Cheers To Us can make them earn it, but he may be the bloke doing the heavy lifting for everyone else.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Powering Away (No.1) — $2.44 / $1.48
Bet $15.00 Win, return $36.60
Prob 33.7% | Place: 89.2% | Value: 0.82x
Why He’s been honest in the placings and this map gives him the right run to stalk and pounce, even if the barrier makes the first bit of the trip a bit awkward.
2. Restless Wind (No.9) — $4.57 / $2.19
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.6% | Place: 69.2% | Value: 0.94x
Why First-up profile says he can run well, but the price isn’t screaming "steal me" and the place line is just a touch clunky for the saver play.
3. Radiant Knight (No.2) — $10.87 / $4.29
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 37.0% | Value: 0.99x
Why He can improve off the slow start last time, but he still needs a bit of luck in a race where the speed is honest and the good spots won’t come cheap.
Roughie: Cheers To Us (No.4) — $10.87 / $4.29
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 36.1% | Value: 0.96x
Why He’s the one likely to control the tempo, but the weight rise and the pressure from the others mean he’s more likely to make the race honest than pinch it.
Race 2 – The Long Sleep
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace; No.7 Snow Doubt and No.2 Cool Bee Bee look the ones most likely to get a lovely run, while the obvious shorties are still going to need the right lane
Punty read: This is a tactical 1400m where nobody wants to make the first move and look silly. No.4 Isalot is the one the market will have a hard look at, but the race shape says a few of these will be waiting around for someone else to do the work. That’s where No.13 The Lady Venus and No.2 Cool Bee Bee start looking the part as late-minute place players.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.50 pool)
1. Isalot (No.4) — $3.50 / $1.83
Bet $13.00 Place, return $23.79
Prob 24.4% | Place: 59.2% | Value: 0.84x
Why Fresh horse with a workable profile, and if he handles the map better than the tempo suggests, he’s the one they’ll all be trying to catch.
2. Blue Typhoon (No.9) — $5.00 / $2.33
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.8% | Place: 48.2% | Value: 0.88x
Why He can be running on late, but from the back he’s depending on the race falling apart a touch more than I’d like.
3. The Lady Venus (No.13) — $6.10 / $2.70
Bet $3.50 Place, return $9.45
Prob 15.0% | Place: 42.4% | Value: 0.90x
Why She’s the sort who can run a solid race without looking like a star, and in a slow-run maiden that kind of honesty gets you paid on the place side.
Roughie: Cool Bee Bee (No.2) — $12.35 / $4.78
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.0% | Place: 30.5% | Value: 1.22x
Why If he gets the right tow and improves again from that second-up run, he’s the sort that can sneak into the finish at a price.
Race 3 – Stayers' Picnic
Race type: Maiden, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace; No.7 Explain wants to roll, and No.1 Durham is the one with the strongest map help if the tempo keeps honest
Punty read: This is the sort of 2000m maiden where the first 1200m matters almost as much as the last 400m. No.8 Nightynight is the swooper I want in the frame, because a few of these are going to be gasping by the time they hit the bend. No.1 Durham is the honest grinder, No.5 Winning All Round can park handy, and No.3 Sitar is the one who gets a nice set-up if they overdo the lead work.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.50 pool)
1. Nightynight (No.8) — $3.86 / $1.95
Bet $15.00 Place, return $29.25
Prob 23.8% | Place: 64.0% | Value: 0.92x
Why He’s the one set to be storming home when the others start feeling that 2000m in the legs, and the race shape looks ideal for a late swoop.
2. Durham (No.1) — $4.78 / $2.26
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.3% | Place: 56.1% | Value: 0.92x
Why Honest as the day is long and gets the right pace map, but the place line is just a touch too chunky for the saver play.
3. Winning All Round (No.5) — $5.32 / $2.44
Bet $3.50 Place, return $8.54
Prob 18.8% | Place: 55.1% | Value: 1.00x
Why Can park up on speed and get first run when they start to climb the hill - that’s a nice shape for a place play in a staying maiden.
Roughie: Spicy Apple (No.4) — $13.33 / $5.11
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 26.7% | Value: 1.03x
Why He’s had enough excuses to make a diplomat blush, and if the race falls into a messy sit-and-sprint, he can pick up the pieces late.
Race 4 – The Mallee Marbles
Race type: BM56, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace; No.4 Frankel Star and No.8 Everythingisautumn are the ones with the best tempo profile, but this is still a tactical crawl until they let rip
Punty read: This is one of those BM56 2000m jobs where you can win or lose the race before they’ve even gone a kilometre because everyone wants a breather. No.2 Geegees Hisword is the top pick because the map and class edge can carry him a long way, while No.1 Shogun Express is the rough old grinder who can bob up if the tempo gets muddled. No.4 Frankel Star is the nasty little roughie that can clatter into the money if the field turns into a sleepover.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Geegees Hisword (No.2) — $3.30 / $1.77
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $17.32 (wins) / $9.29 (places)
Prob 12.1% | Place: 34.7% | Value: 0.40x
Why He’s the one with the best mix of race fitness, draw, and a map that keeps him in touch while the others get caught napping.
2. Shogun Express (No.1) — $6.85 / $2.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 30.4% | Value: 0.71x
Why He’s not flashy, but he’s genuine enough to sneak into the finish if they turn it into a crawl-and-sprint affair.
3. Eismond (No.3) — $8.06 / $3.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.79x
Why The gear tweaks say they’re having a proper go, but he still needs the race to go his way more than I’d like.
Roughie: Frankel Star (No.4) — $20.00 / $7.33
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.87x
Why If the tempo gets messy and the better-fancied types are left flat-footed, this bloke can absolutely bob up and pinch a cheque.
Race 5 – Dash and Bash
Race type: BM56, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace; No.2 Boltonova and No.6 Dougie's Dream can roll forward, but No.3 Himeno is the one with the dream run if he jumps clean
Punty read: This is the day’s best little setup race. No.3 Himeno looks like the horse with the clearest path to winning, because a fresh horse with a good gate over 1000m is a very annoying thing to oppose when the speed map is on your side. No.1 Tatsu and No.5 Redwinelover have enough ability to make a race of it, but if Himeno brings the debut version, the others are running for the minors.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Himeno (No.3) — $6.80 / $2.93
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $35.70 (wins) / $15.38 (places)
Prob 27.8% | Place: 78.0% | Value: 1.89x
Why Fresh, sharp, and maps to get exactly the run you want in a 1000m dash - jump, settle, and let the others chase shadows.
2. Boltonova (No.2) — $13.16 / $5.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 41.1% | Value: 1.48x
Why He’s got a handy enough profile and can be right there if the race goes off the rails, but the price is too rich for a soft nibble.
3. Tatsu (No.1) — $3.48 / $1.83
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 39.4% | Value: 0.37x
Why Honest as a dunny door, but the map says he’ll have to do a bit of work and that’s not ideal in a sharp 1000m dash.
Roughie: Dougie's Dream (No.6) — $9.62 / $3.87
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 39.3% | Value: 1.02x
Why He can go forward and give a sight, but he’s more the bloke who sets the race up than the bloke you want to die on.
Race 6 – Open Handicap Rumble
Race type: BM56, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace; No.3 Volkano is the one who’ll try to control it, while No.5 Mr Markle and No.14 Peperoncino look set to get the right sort of launch
Punty read: This is a proper chaos handicap - one of those races where the form guide gets mugged in the first furlong and the winning move is usually the one that looked slightly ordinary on paper but got the right sit. No.4 Noble Style is the fresh horse I want on top, because first-up ability and a good map can be the difference between a nice collect and a stomach punch. No.3 Volkano and No.7 Sontay can both bob up if they get the race run to suit, but they’re more "dangerous if left alone" than "banker material".
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Noble Style (No.4) — $6.94 / $2.98
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $36.44 (wins) / $15.64 (places)
Prob 14.4% | Place: 45.1% | Value: 1.00x
Why Fresh horse with a huge first-up record and a map that lets him settle without getting into a speed duel from the jump.
2. Volkano (No.3) — $9.35 / $3.78
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 35.9% | Value: 1.02x
Why If he gets loose in front he can be mighty hard to reel in, but the pace pressure means he’s vulnerable to a late ambush.
3. Sontay (No.7) — $8.55 / $3.52
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 35.2% | Value: 0.91x
Why Capable enough, but he needs the race to fall his way and the map doesn’t exactly hand him a red carpet.
Roughie: Invincible Bay (No.13) — $17.86 / $6.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.75x
Why If the speed cooks hard enough, he’s one of the runners that can come flying home and make the finish look silly.
Race 7 – Closing Time
Race type: BM56, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace; No.7 Sir Castleton looks the likely leader and No.5 Creek should be right there in the map mix
Punty read: This is the late-race test where the day can either pay for a nice dinner or mug you in the car park. No.7 Sir Castleton is the roughy with the map edge, No.2 Dirnaseer is the one who can run into a place if they go hard enough, and No.12 Solar Mist is the big price that can absolutely skittle the finish if the leaders overcook it. No.6 City Pro is the sneaky one who can clunk into the numbers if the race turns into a genuine tear-up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($25.00 pool)
1. Sir Castleton (No.7) — $15.38 / $5.79
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $115.35 (wins) / $43.42 (places)
Prob 11.9% | Place: 42.8% | Value: 1.82x
Why He’s got the pace map to get involved and if he crosses cleanly or lands outside the speed without burning petrol, he can take a serious hand in the finish.
2. Dirnaseer (No.2) — $3.23 / $1.74
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.1% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.36x
Why Comes through the right type of race shape and can finish over the top of a few tired legs if they go too hard early.
3. Solar Mist (No.12) — $35.71 / $12.57
Bet $6.50 Each Way ($3.25W + $3.25P), return $116.06 (wins) / $40.85 (places)
Prob 9.7% | Place: 36.0% | Value: 3.44x
Why Big price, but that’s the point - if the speed melts and the race turns into a swooper’s carnival, this is the one that can blow the place market apart.
Roughie: City Pro (No.6) — $16.39 / $6.13
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 33.0% | Value: 1.43x
Why He’s the kind who can be useful when the race gets taken apart late, but the ticket already has the stronger angles covered.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
QUADDIE (R4-R7)
Smart: 2, 1, 3, 4 / 3, 2, 1, 6 / 4, 3, 7, 6 / 7, 2, 12, 5 (256 combos x $0.25 = $64) — 25% flexi
This is a full-blooded wide lane: one race with a tidy anchor, then three that can absolutely bite you if you get greedy. With four open-ish legs you’re not trying to be a genius, you’re trying to survive the carnage and catch one of the bigger-priced runners to make the dividend worth the headache.
Punty's take: Four legs, four fights, and a proper sweat if the roughies land. Entertainment first, sanity second.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Cover is gold on the true rail if the Soft 5 chops up
The early races can still play fair, but if the ground gets cut up even a touch, horses stuck wide without a trail are going to be cooked. Keep an eye on runners like Powering Away and Himeno who can get the right sort of run without wasting petrol.
2 - Patrick Payne has a proper hand in the card
He’s got live runners across sprinting and staying distances, and that usually means the yard has targeted the day rather than just turning up to fill a bus. When one stable can land across different race shapes, you pay attention.
3 - The roughies are better on the place side than the win side
This is the kind of card where a few outsiders can run into the frame if the tempo and track play nicely, but you don’t need to go chasing moonshots. Think Solar Mist, Frankel Star, Cool Bee Bee style runs - sneaky, not silly.
THE CHAOS KITCHEN
This is a day for sticking to the spine and not getting seduced by every longshot with a pretty face. If the anchors do their job, you can have a proper crack at the quaddie without turning into a full-blown mug punter. Gamble Responsibly.
