Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, midfield shaping, with a few chances to get held up then peel out late.
Punty read:
This is a slow-tempo maiden where momentum is everything. Malleable looks the most 'likely to be there' type, and Ena Sharples is the classic wet-track grinder that can hang around long enough to hit the line. Flagship is the sort to get overlooked at a price, but if the race doesn't open up, he can pinch a place. Noble Lee is your "someone has to do it" roughie vibe if things break wrong for the favourites.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Malleable (No.2) — $3.75 / $2.15 🏆 WINNER
Bet $12.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$33.00
Prob 23.9% | Place: 36.5% | Value: 1.61x
Why Best balance of speed map and finishing prospects on a Heavy 9 maiden, and he's not asking for a miracle to get into it.
2. Ena Sharples (No.5) — $4.55 / $2.15 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.6% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.07x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Azizam (No.7) — $6.25 / $2.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.4% | Place: 28.9% | Value: 1.29x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Noble Lee (No.3) — $11.00 / $3.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.4% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 1.31x
Why If the race tightens and the inside tactical run opens up late, he's got the overs value route.
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, on-pacing horses can still get a run, but the finish is messy on Heavy 9.
Punty read:
Sight Unseen is the obvious speed-on-footing option, and in a rain-affected maiden you often want the one that's most likely to hit the ground running. Undertheboardwalk is the other one who can place if the race strings out. Rusty Nail is your value place lean. The rest are "maybe if everything goes right" sorts.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Sight Unseen (No.6) — $2.26 / $1.40 🏆 WINNER
Bet $12.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$15.12
Prob 27.7% | Place: 40.5% | Value: 1.06x
Why Wet track suits his style, he maps forward enough to grab the race, and he's got the place density too if the win doesn't land.
2. Undertheboardwalk (No.7) — $2.77 / $1.62 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 32.4% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.82x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Rosa (No.5) — $7.15 / $3.10 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.60x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Rusty Nail (No.3) — $9.90 / $3.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.91x
Why If the on-pacers blot out and this turns into a grind, he's the one who can sneak into third, fourth, then get there.
Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Liquid Les to lead. Means you get a real race, not a float.
Punty read:
This is where pace matters most. Wheelitin looks like the one who can be in range, not stuck in the dogfight, and then still have the legs late. Sandoku is dangerous at Heavy, but he's more of a 'right race, right run' type. Liquid Les is the leader, but leaders in Heavy 9 can get caught holding the key too long. I'm leaning into the stalk and pounce vibe.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Wheelitin (No.4) — $4.55 / $2.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $12.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$12.00
Prob 15.4% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 0.89x
Why Tracks the speed without doing extra work, and Heavy 9 plays into his stronger run home.
2. The Entertainer (No.3) — $4.10 / $2.05 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.3% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 0.96x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Sandoku (No.6) — $3.27 / $1.72 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.7% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 0.99x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Liquid Les (No.5) — $5.90 / $2.60 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.20x
Why If the tempo genuinely stays honest and he doesn't get stitched up by chasing traffic, he can still hit the line.
Race type: Benchmark 75, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, likely Digger getting active. Short sprint means positions at the top of the lane matter.
Punty read:
Amazing Son is the one I want on a Heavy 9 because he's built to be efficient, not flailing. Hey Hey Baby is the value place and can muscle through. Procul Boy is the outsider with real Heavy proof, he's a sneaky "if the track plays kinder" play. Digger can lead, but in these sort of 1200m sprints the leader's job is hard if the race breaks into clusters.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Amazing Son (No.3) — $2.25 / $1.30 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$18.75
Prob 37.4% | Place: 66.6% | Value: 1.06x
Why Most reliable map, Heavy suited, and he's got enough 'hit the line' to survive wet footing chaos.
2. Hey Hey Baby (No.5) — $4.35 / $1.95 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.0% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.21x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Procul Boy (No.1) — $4.40 / $1.90 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.4% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 0.91x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Brigit (No.6) — $4.95 / $2.20 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.85x
Why If she gets a midfield run with no kickback trouble, she can sneak into the placings.
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, but short sprint means class decides late. Wet makes it messy fast.
Punty read:
Classy Brahma is the value win in this one, he's got the better Heavy footprint and he should handle the going without turning it into a slog. Elite Choice is a legit danger if the pace collapses, and Aliyana Belle is the type who can land in the frame when the field fans out late. See You In Beijing is fav speed, but at this track you don't always get the full 100% payoff from the shortest ones when it's slippery.
Top 3 + Roughie ($4.50 pool)
1. Classy Brahma (No.3) — $4.40 / $1.60 🏆 3RD
Bet $4.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$4.50
Prob 18.6% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.10x
Why Value win, Heavy proof, and the race shape gives him every chance to grind through the straight.
2. See You In Beijing (No.1) — $1.90 / $1.10 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 30.1% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.78x
Why A real chance — but at $1.10 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Elite Choice (No.7) — $5.45 / $1.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.7% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.30x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Miss Dixie (No.11) — $12.50 / $3.10 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.6% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.95x
Why Needs everything to go her way, but if it does, she's the kind of wide-ish runner who can clap late.
Race type: Benchmark 75, 2100m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, long race, lots of chances for horses to lose and find their rhythm. Wet staying form is everything.
Punty read:
Malachy is a short-ish price for a reason, but the safest play might be Stella Success if you're thinking "place and hope for a win". Duke Of Plumpton is the value danger, Identikit is another who can hit a mid-race spot and keep grinding. The Finnster and Deadly Pony are the sorts who can get caught too far back early, then need luck with clear running.
Top 3 + Roughie ($6.00 pool)
1. Malachy (No.7) — $3.20 / $1.55 🏆 WINNER
Bet $6.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$13.20
Prob 16.8% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.74x
Why Heavy 9 place potential is high, and he's got the staying legs to still be around when the race stretches.
2. Stella Success (No.8) — $6.35 / $2.40 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.20x
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Duke Of Plumpton (No.4) — $8.45 / $2.90 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.14x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Comedy (No.1) — $11.75 / $3.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 1.49x
Why If the race stays genuine and the field strings out, he can pounce on weak late legs.
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace. This is the one where the on-pacers set up the finish, then Heavy decides who finishes.
Punty read:
Our Lady Brooke is the one you want on a Heavy 9 1600m. Her place profile is elite, and when you get that kind of repeatable late action, you don't overthink it. Dee Vee Pee can be dangerous if the track plays kindly to inside speed, and Explosive Impact is the place-bait when the race goes a little too hard early. Reconvene is a tough customer but may need the run at the right time to make the winner's circle.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Our Lady Brooke (No.6) — $4.05 / $1.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 18.9% | Place: 60.4% | Value: 1.07x
Why Heavy 9 suits her running style, and she's the kind that keeps earning late when the rest start slipping.
2. Dee Vee Pee (No.1) — $4.90 / $1.95 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.03x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Hollaback Girl (No.10) — $4.40 / $1.85 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.4% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.01x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Horonuku (No.2) — $9.45 / $2.90 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.4% | Place: 22.6% | Value: 0.84x
Why Needs a specific setup, but if the pace shapes clean, he can run on late enough to pinch a placing.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 3,5,6 / 3,11,7 / 7,1,8,4 / 6,2,10,1 (144 combos x $0.33 = $48.00) -- 33% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Amazing Son (Race 4, No.3)✓ Won — $2.25
2 - Classy Brahma (Race 5, No.3)✗ — $4.40
3 - Our Lady Brooke (Race 7, No.6) — $4.05
Meeting Stats
Selections
Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Hawera's sitting there like a drowned rat in the Birdcage, Heavy 9 and rain looming, so you best bring your wet-track manners and your roughie instincts. This meeting's got that 'slow tempo, slippery decisions' vibe, where one bad step turns into a whole mystery novel.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Hawera, 1200m-2100m card
Rail: True
Official going: Heavy 9 (expected to play BOGgy, safe-ish leaders, plus a late run or two)
Weather: Raining (watch for the rain to keep hanging around, early to mid spells)
Early lane guess: inside-speed lanes, then anything who can sit and pounce
Tempo profile: Slow to Genuine, with enough pace to keep it honest, but not enough to steamroll the whole field
Jockeys to follow:
Lisa Allpress: gets involved across multiple races and has the 'wet track, give me the reins' style.
Tom Wigram: stable patterns look dangerous when they decide it's time, especially in the staying gear.
Lily Sutherland: when she's on the speed map side, she doesn't half step up.
Stables to respect:
S A Sharrock (6 runners): wins in the mud when the races don't turn into a procession.
Ms I Kelly (2 runners): always seems to have a live one at this sort of meeting.
P W Lock (3 runners): their horses park closer than you'd think, then knuckle down late.
Punty's take:
Heavy tracks turn races into tactics. With the rain cycling and the rail True, you're not chasing "fast". You're chasing "comfortable action". That means midfield runners who can get a breather, and leaders who can keep their feet, are the ones doing the damage. Also, watch for horses priced too short, they often get overbet in wet footing, then fall off the map when it's sticky.
Race 1 and Race 2 are classic "maiden mayhem" on a slow-ish tempo. They're the sort of races where you want one to win, and one to place, because divs can be thin when the field's clumped. Race 3 through Race 5? That's where the class pressure starts showing. Race 4 and Race 6 are your glue races, Race 5 is the value battleground, and Race 7 is the wet-track benchmark puntter's fever dream.
What it means for you:
Be bold early with your win selection in the first half, but don't go stupid with wide multis unless you've got at least one proven mud runner who can handle traffic. If the pace is genuine, back the horses who map close enough that they aren't doing extra work. If pace is slow, protect with place bets because the finish line is basically a judgement call in the last 100m.
For your game plan: steer your main spine to the mid-distance wet battlers, then let Quaddie coverage do the heavy lifting in the back half. If you're only backing three things today, make sure at least one is a place-friendly horse from a race with limited real early speed.
