Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Mt Isa, head to https://punty.ai/tips/mount-isa-2026-10-20
Rightio Loose Units, Mt Isa is fine, rail's True, track's Good, and the tempo looks like it'll come in waves like a Netflix binge, so we're going hunting with a tight little spine and a couple of spicy side quests.
2nd August weather vibes today, no rain to soften the landings, so the horses that can hold a position and keep finding will get rewarded. With that rail staying put, you can still get saved by running near the right patch of turf, but you're gonna cop some pressure if you're stuck wide and the speed holds up. Think "summon the turn of foot" time, not "go for a wander and hope" time.
Right, my three winners on the day are doing that classic thing where the map lines up, the market has a reason to respect them, and the stable angles look like they've got a plan, not a vibe. After that, I'll show you where the roughies can sneak in for a laugh and a fist pump, because sometimes punting is just tactical silliness.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Good, 900-1200m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good (expected to play fast on pace, no excuses for leaders)
Weather: Fine (watch for no-rain means speed can stick, rail influence stays real)
Early lane guess: Tight to the leaders, rail-protected lanes for stalking
Tempo profile: Generally slow through the early, then it's on like Donkey Kong once they go
Jockeys to follow:
Amie Meissner: consistently gets them in the finish and today she's got enough rides to have a proper go
Caine Stuart: when he's involved, the speed map usually ends up doing something useful
Hayley Saunders: she rides like she knows where the race is being won, not where it started
Stables to respect:
Tanya Parry (41 runners): she's everywhere, and when the money lands it usually means something
Bevan Johnson (7 runners): shows up with runners that can actually take a spot and go again
Jay Morris (2 runners): smaller team, so when they run, they're usually not there for a day trip
Punty's take:
Mt Isa is the sort of track where you can win by doing the boring stuff properly. Get in the right lane, don't burn petrol early, and let the Good track do your hard work for you. The rail being True means the 'wander around the track' tactic gets punished, especially when the tempo isn't wild enough to cover mistakes with chaos.
Across the card, the pace maps are the backbone. Race 1 is a slower maiden where it'll pay to have one cruising closer than the others, Race 4 is the "leaders vs stalkers" showdown where the race is shaped by the first few jumps, and Race 6 is where place leverage can pay if you've got the right horse sitting in the right rhythm.
My Big 3 spine is designed to survive the day's shapes: one clear maiden favourite, one class benchmark grinder, and one open handicap leader type that looks set to control his own destiny. Then you sprinkle in the roughies where the excuses make sense, and you're set up for a card that can land a multi without everything needing to go right like a miracle movie ending.
What it means for you:
If you're trying to be clever, pick the races where the pace and the barrier actually tell a story. Race 4 (Revolt) is exactly that sort of race, because the leader map is doing favours and the horse's whole job is to make it hard for the others to build a run.
For value, you want places where the market is pricing for fear, not for form. That's why my roughies are picked off specific "they've got a reason" angles, like interference, wide trips, or gear that gets turned on for the right reason. If you back the wrong kind of longshot, you're just donating. Back the right one, and it's comedy gold.
Bet it like a grown-up degenerate: be aggressive where the speed is simple, and be disciplined where the field shapes are messy. The day's not chaotic enough to go full gambling gremlin, so we're doing tactical larrikinism, not random flailing.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Euphoric Miss (Race 1, No.4) — $3.05
Why Maps midfield and the market loves her for a reason, blinkers on again, and she's built to hit the line.
2 - Dark Harmony (Race 3, No.2) — $2.58
Why True on-pacer in a benchmark where the speed is hard to run down, and she keeps showing up.
3 - Revolt (Race 4, No.2) — $2.97
Why Leader map, proven at the track, and the race shape screams she gets first look at the finish.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~23 = ~$23 collect
Race 1 – Sportsbet Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, Macho Grande has the pace advantage but everyone else is effectively battling for position mid-race
Punty read: This is a "figure it out early, then sprint late" maiden on a Good deck. Euphoric Miss is the obvious story, she's the one the market can't stop backing, and the gear tweak plus her recent consistent showings says she's ready to actually put it together. Foxy Artist has that 'wide trip excuse' stink and once she's got her blinkers and gets a fair crack, she's the classic value for the exact trifecta script. Flying Giselle is on-pacer-ish, so if the tempo stays manageable, she can be around the money.
Top 3 + Roughie (15.0 pool)
1. Euphoric Miss (No.4) — $3.05 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $45.75
Prob 45.3% | Place: 57.5% | Value: 1.33x
Why Market favourite with the right prep profile for this pace setup, and she should get the run to finish over the top.
2. Foxy Artist (No.1) — $5.03 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.83x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Flying Giselle (No.5) — $6.80 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.98x
Why She can race closer, but she's still a place-only kind of threat in this sort of maiden squeeze.
Roughie: Macho Grande (No.2) — $9.80 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.98x
Why He might pinch a slot, but the value path needs the speed to collapse and that's not the day's vibe.
Race 2 – Trevor Morris Builders Plate (C1)
Race type: Class 1, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with backmarkers having the key advantage and Up To Us sitting midfield
Punty read: This one's got that slow-burn feel. Up To Us is the one I want sitting in the race where she can hit the lane and hold her ground, because the pace isn't cooking early. Lilii Borea looks like a genuine 'stays in touch' sort, and Makeminemilo is the sort that can pick up pieces if the leaders crumple even slightly. Outcast Soldier is your roughie type, because her style can land a place if things go a bit sideways.
Top 3 + Roughie (15.0 pool)
1. Up To Us (No.5) — $3.14 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $47.10
Prob 33.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.04x
Why She's got the class to manage a slow tempo, and she's built to be there when the field starts to stretch.
2. Lilii Borea (No.7) — $4.20 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.97x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Makeminemilo (No.3) — $5.59 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.8% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.00x
Why If he gets a clean run, he can figure. But the day's place scenario is too awkward to spread.
Roughie: Outcast Soldier (No.4) — $16.39 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.7% | Place: 17.1% | Value: 0.93x
Why Bigger price, needs everything to go her way, but the upside is there if the race breaks.
Race 3 – QH20 (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1450m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, on-pacers hold the keys, and Dark Harmony looks set to control the breathing
Punty read: This is a two-horse war on paper, and I reckon the track will make sure it becomes that. Dark Harmony is the on-pacer type that can turn the race into a survival test. Zephirine is the other legit danger, she's been knocking on the door and she's got the fitness to keep responding over this extra distance. If you're looking for a price, Cryptology is the sort that can sneak into third if the top two go too hard, but the winner's club belongs to the pace.
Top 3 + Roughie (15.0 pool)
1. Dark Harmony (No.2) — $2.58 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $38.70
Prob 42.5% | Place: 52.9% | Value: 1.10x
Why Fast enough early to stay in the fight, and she's been hitting peak form in benchmark territory.
2. Zephirine (No.1) — $2.70 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 38.4% | Place: 52.9% | Value: 1.04x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Cryptology (No.7) — $12.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.6% | Place: 16.7% | Value: 0.82x
Why Needs chaos, needs timing, and needs the front two to do everything for the rest.
Roughie: Regal Judgement (No.3) — $14.49 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.2% | Place: 11.5% | Value: 0.62x
Why Price is there, but the pace and the winner profile are too locked in for a win punt.
Race 4 – Steejo Press Hcp
Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Revolt is the leader and it looks like she can dictate the tempo
Punty read: This is where the track turns into a little boxing ring, leader vs everyone else. Revolt maps to do the work early, and if the speed stays honest, she's got the best chance to put them under pressure before they even get organised. Surfers Royale and Napoleon Strike are the stalking-style threats, they want the leaders to wobble just enough. She Smashes is the grinder if she finds the right lane, but Last Ditch Effort and Demitasse need timing magic off the right setup.
Top 3 + Roughie (15.0 pool)
1. Revolt (No.2) — $2.97 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $44.55
Prob 40.6% | Place: 54.3% | Value: 1.21x
Why She's built for this pattern, she should get first crack at the finish, and that kind of position wins races at Mt Isa.
2. Surfers Royale (No.7) — $4.81 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.93x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Napoleon Strike (No.3) — $6.71 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.90x
Why He can stalk into it, but I'm not paying for the in-between today.
Roughie: Demitasse (No.6) — $9.26 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.94x
Why Needs the leaders to give her a crack, but she's not the obvious win script.
Race 5 – Sportsbet (Bm50)
Race type: Benchmark 50, 900m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, on-pacers are advantaged, and it's sprint chaos if you're caught mid-field
Punty read: Short course, big consequences. Madam Borodina is the one to lean on because she's got the profile to handle the speed while still finishing hard, and she's been in the right sort of races. Wholelottalove looks like the danger from the right rhythm, Wholelottalove often runs like she wants to be in the picture, not watching it. Xingxing is also in the mix, but this is a race where you either have the right position or you're paying for traffic.
Top 3 + Roughie (9.5 pool)
1. Madam Borodina (No.1) — $3.85 / place tote
Bet $9.50 Win, return $36.58
Prob 25.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.99x
Why On-pacer enough to keep momentum, and the win case is strong without needing miracles.
2. Wholelottalove (No.6) — $4.65 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.4% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.04x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Xingxing (No.2) — $5.10 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.97x
Why Keep an eye on the run, but today's bet plan is built around not over-spreading.
Roughie: Leucaena (No.5) — $9.26 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.95x
Why Price is decent, and first-time gear could help, but the safe lane for a win is around the top pair.
Race 6 – CNW Electrical Hcp (C3)
Race type: Class 3, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, multiple on-pacers are in play, and Jimmyinthejungle has the right trip profile
Punty read: This is a 1000m where you get punished for going nowhere early. Jimmyinthejungle looks like the one to be around the better parts of the track, and the kind of consistency you need at this level. Instigate is the standout place angle, Buz Fuz is your sneaky 'could hold on' runner, and Whiskey River is the danger if it all lines up for a midfield run.
Top 3 + Roughie (10.5 pool)
1. Jimmyinthejungle (No.1) — $4.39 / place tote
Bet $10.50 Win, return $46.09
Prob 28.4% | Place: 59.1% | Value: 1.25x
Why He maps well, he's got the class to stay in rhythm, and he's the kind of horse that keeps turning wins into place results, then upgrades.
2. Instigate (No.7) — $5.10 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.05x
Why A real chance — but at that price the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Buz Fuz (No.9) — $6.45 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 43.8% | Value: 1.03x
Why Not the win story, but if the race chops up, he can still hang on for a cheque.
Roughie: Whiskey River (No.6) — $9.43 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.88x
Why Needs a clearer run than usual and a specific pace shape, so he's backup comedy, not the main course.
Race 7 – City & Country Realty (Bm58)
Race type: Benchmark 58, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Viking Valour is on-pace and can control the race tempo
Punty read: This is a classic "who gets to keep their rhythm?" race. Viking Valour looks set to be involved early enough to make it hard for the rest, and she's priced like she has every right to be in the finish. Allezizzy is the main danger because she's been doing the consistent stuff that turns into win attempts when the luck lands. A Bar In Paris is your place-type live hope if the field spreads out.
Top 3 + Roughie (10.5 pool)
1. Viking Valour (No.2) — $4.33 / place tote
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $22.73 (wins) / tote (places)
Prob 31.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.34x
Why Strong on-pace profile, and each way makes sense in a race where third can come from a million different places.
2. Allezizzy (No.7) — $4.27 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.90x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. A Bar In Paris (No.5) — $7.19 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.07x
Why Price is fair, but we're not doubling the same risk on the same bet structure.
Roughie: Hollerloud (No.1) — $18.52 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.7% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 1.05x
Why Backmarker dreams happen, but this looks like a race for the ones who can keep close enough to pounce.
SEQUENCE LANES
QUADDIE (R4–R7)
Smart: 2,7,3 / 1,2,6 / 1,7,9,6 / 2,7,5,1 (144 combos x $0.14 = $20.00) -- 14% flexi
Punty's take: R4 is tight, R6-into-R7 is where it opens up, so this is "mainly well thought out" with enough spread to survive one leg sneaking off-script.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - The rail being True keeps people honest
When it's Good and dry, leaders can sprint off the rails lane without the surface bailing them out. Back races where the pace map isn't forcing wide heroes to do extra labour.
2 - Thin-place fields punish the ego
In the small-field races, place betting gets stingy fast, so win-only plays the game cleaner. That's why a couple of "danger" horses are tracked, not staked.
3 - Gear changes are the quiet cheat codes today
Blinkers on again for Foxy Artist, tongue control bit for Last Ditch Effort, and compression hood for Leucaena, those are the kind of tweaks that can wake a horse up just enough to grab a top-four slice when the race tempo is awkward.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Alright legends, Mt Isa is the sort of track where you win by respecting the map and letting the Good ground do the talking. If your legs feel calm going into Race 4 and 6, you're doing it right, and if they're not, well, that's what roughies are for. Gamble Responsibly.
