Rightio Loose Units, New Plymouth's a full-blown bog today - Heavy 10, rail out 7m, overcast skies and a card where the first bloke to find the right patch of ground could look like a genius while the rest are floundering around like extras in Mad Max.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: New Plymouth Raceway, 1200m to 2000m card
Rail: Out 7m
Official going: Heavy 10 (expected to play like a proper slog, with leaders and wet-track types getting the sniff)
Weather: Overcast (watch for the track chopping up and a few lane shifts late)
Early lane guess: on-pace and barrier-friendly early; if the inside gets chewed, the slightly better ground can be in the 2-6 lane
Tempo profile: Plenty of genuine speed in Races 1, 2, 5 and 7; a couple of races where the leader can nick a cheap one, and a few where the swoopers need the race to collapse like a dodgy deck chair.
Jockeys to follow:
Triston Moodley — he lands on a stack of key speed horses and can control a race if the map hands him the keys.
Sam McNab — aboard live on-pace rides in the early grades; if he lands clean, he can make things very awkward for the rest.
Amber Riddell — on a few handy chances in the back half of the card and can pop one into the first four if the tempo goes pear-shaped.
Stables to respect:
K T Myers (3 runners) — Djibouti, Wing And A Prayer and Dink all look like genuine players, not just field-fillers.
S A Sharrock (6 runners) — deep book, multiple maps, and a couple of market movers that have the look of horses the stable expects to run well.
Robbie Patterson (4 runners) — enough live bullets to matter, especially in the wet where a bit of grunt and balance goes a long way.
Punty's take: This meeting is less Flemington and more a pub carpark after a downpour. Heavy 10 at New Plymouth usually screams one thing: map first, manners second, and wet-track form right up there in neon. If you're back in the ruck with no early position, you can get bailed up like a bloke trying to leave the TAB before the race jump.
The key here is that a few races have genuine tempo, but not all speed is created equal. Races 1, 2, 5 and 7 are the ones where the on-speed brigade can control the script if they bounce and get rolling. Races 4, 6 and 8 are more about who handles the glue and who can keep finding under pressure. Think less Top Gun, more The Dark Knight in the mud - some runners will look glamorous in the ring and then never go a yard when the real work starts.
What really jumps out is the way the market has already picked the eyes out of a few well-placed runners: the inside draws, the wet-track veterans and the horses with a clear map advantage. That matters today more than the usual "nice prep, good barrier, hope and a prayer" routine. If you're trying to be clever and chase backmarkers across a Heavy 10 without a proper reason, you're basically ordering a schooner and expecting a bottle of champagne.
What it means for you: Keep the faith with the horses that can land near the speed and keep trucking. This is not the day to get romantic about last-to-first fantasies unless the race genuinely melts in front of them. The playbook is pretty simple: lean into place money, stay sharp on the early races where the track pattern can settle, and don't go full lunatic in the quaddie unless you've got a real view on the lanes.
The best betting shape today is built around a few hard-working, map-friendly runners and a couple of value stabs where the wet track plus positioning can do the heavy lifting. In the maidens, keep your boots on and your shoulders square - there's enough noise to avoid blank cheques. In the benchmarks, the runners with recent wet form and a decent draw are the ones you can get busy with. If you're looking for a hero, pick one with a map and a mud pedigree, not just a pretty price.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Djibouti (Race 1, No.10) — $3.80
Why Maps to get a soft run in behind the speed and the race shapes like the sort of slog where a horse with a bit of grit can find one more kick than the flashy types.
2 - Wing And A Prayer (Race 2, No.3) — $4.50
Why Barrier 1 is gold dust in a wet maiden, and this one can sit handy, save ground and pounce when the others are flailing around.
3 - Triple Threat (Race 5, No.3) — $4.20
Why The speed map looks tailor-made - can roll forward, control the race, and if it gets its own way it could make the rest look like they're running in thongs.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~71.82 = ~$718.20 collect
Race 1 – Mud maiden grinder
Race type: Maiden, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo with Zorba controlling things up front; a few midfielders will have their chance, but the backmarkers need luck and a forgiving lane.
Punty read: This is a proper attrition test. Djibouti looks the one with the clearest path - no drama, no nonsense, just a horse that can sit in the right spot and keep grinding. Derryman is the forgiving type after being bumped last time, while The Republican is the one who can improve if the leader gets a breather and the race turns into a staying contest rather than a stop-start farce.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)
1. Djibouti (No.10) — $3.80 / $1.65
Bet $17.00 Each Way ($8.50W + $8.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$17.00
Prob 21.6% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.68x
Why Drawn to settle in the right spot and looks the one most likely to absorb the heavy ground without turning into a wet sponge late.
2. Derryman (No.1) — $4.40 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.81x
Why Forget the last run - he was bumped/hampered and can run a much cleaner race with a decent draw and a steadier trip.
3. The Republican (No.3) — $6.50 / $2.30
Bet $5.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$8.25
Prob 13.6% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.78x
Why Needs to put the slow start behind him, but he's got the right sort of on-pace map to hang around when others are gasping.
Roughie: Jake (No.5) — $12.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 0.94x
Why If the leaders overcook it and this bloke gets a tow into it, he can clatter home into the placings without needing to be Superman.
Race 2 – The inside alley fight
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Teams likely rolling forward; Wing And A Prayer gets the cosy map, while the value runners are the ones who can keep position and not lose momentum.
Punty read: This is where the inside gate matters like a VIP wristband. Wing And A Prayer is the sort of horse you can trust to get the job done if the jock keeps it tidy. Ezzie is the one that can improve off the freshen-up pattern, Bridie has the wet ground tick and can keep sticking on, and Reconvene is the roughie that can fill a place if the race gets messy and the held-up horse gets a clear shot.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.50 pool)
1. Wing And A Prayer (No.3) — $4.50 / $1.80
Bet $17.00 Each Way ($8.50W + $8.50P) — Cashed, net -$0.85
Prob 16.7% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.91x
Why Has the map advantage, the market's nibbling at it, and from barrier 1 it'll save enough fuel to be a proper nuisance late.
2. Ezzie (No.1) — $5.50 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.7% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.20x
Why Fresh enough to bounce, and the right sort of runner to sneak into the finish if the tempo turns this into a dogfight.
3. Bridie (No.9) — $4.00 / $1.70
Bet $3.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$2.80
Prob 16.7% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.39x
Why The wet track and the formline both give her a ticket, and she can keep churning into the money even if the race isn't run to suit.
Roughie: Reconvene (No.2) — $11.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.48x
Why Held up and bumped last start; if he gets the right split and the race opens up, he can make his presence felt at a price.
Race 3 – The pressure cooker
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, which means the leaders won't be getting an easy picnic, but they also won't need a miracle. Position still matters.
Punty read: Madame Kleptomane is the class of the map here and should get every chance to lob handy and be right in the fight. Hopingfora Beauty is the obvious danger but the market has already had a proper look, and Mr Blackjack is the one I want in the place line because he maps to stalk and the heavy going can turn a decent run into a very sneaky finish. Rocka Philly is the roughie for those who like a bit of mud on the boots.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)
1. Madame Kleptomane (No.7) — $3.80 / $1.70
Bet $14.50 Each Way ($7.25W + $7.25P) — ✗ Lost, net -$14.50
Prob 17.3% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.79x
Why Good map, right sort of racing style for a heavy 1600m, and the set-up says she'll be in the first wave when the whips are cracking.
2. Hopingfora Beauty (No.9) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.3% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.51x
Why Gets the speed map to suit and has been firming, but she's short enough that you're swallowing a lot of risk for not much juice.
3. Mr Blackjack (No.2) — $6.50 / $2.30
Bet $5.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$10.45
Prob 15.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.23x
Why The wet ground should keep him honest and the on-pace pattern gives him every chance to keep finding when others start waving the white flag.
Roughie: Rocka Philly (No.8) — $9.00 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.0% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.88x
Why If the race turns into a bit of a scrap and the tempo is honest enough, this one can be running on like a mate late to the pub - not pretty, but effective.
Race 4 – The 1400m swamp
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo with Condensed Milk setting the tone; Dink and the front half of the field should get the best shot at controlling the race.
Punty read: Dink is the horse with the most obvious winning setup - good map, decent intent, and the sort of on-speed profile that can turn a muddy 1400 into a picnic if the others are slow out of the stalls. Diplomatic has the look of one that can be forgiven and still place if it gets a cleaner run, while Kay's Ruebe is the mud-hugging grinder for the place punters. Jilly Ocean is the roughie with the kind of "if it all goes right" profile that makes sickos start scribbling notes.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.00 pool)
1. Dink (No.6) — $3.90 / $1.70
Bet $11.50 Each Way ($5.75W + $5.75P) — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 16.5% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.93x
Why Maps to sit right on the engine and in this slop that's worth its weight in gold.
2. Diplomatic (No.1) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.50x
Why The wide-ish draw isn't ideal, but the horse has enough finish to be the one picking up the pieces if the pace burns early.
3. Kay's Ruebe (No.5) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet $4.50 Place — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 15.4% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.00x
Why Proven enough in the wet to keep turning the legs over, and with the right trip she can grind her way into the money.
Roughie: Jilly Ocean (No.10) — $11.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 0.72x
Why First look at the track setup says she needs a bit of luck, but if the race gets won by the swoopers late, she's the sort to punch a hole through the pack.
Race 5 – The speed war
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo with Triple Threat and Emac expected to control the fire. This is where position and composure matter like a good defence in the grand final.
Punty read: Triple Threat is the map horse and the one I want on top - if it ping-pongs forward and gets a soft time of it, the others might be chasing shadows. Emac is the lurking danger but is short enough that you don't want to hand over your lunch money for the privilege. Merchant Banker is the place line horse, while Lacey Luck is the roughie that could slip into the finish if the leaders go too hard and get a bit giddy.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)
1. Triple Threat (No.3) — $4.20 / $1.60
Bet $17.00 Each Way ($8.50W + $8.50P) — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 17.3% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.63x
Why Has the pace map to boss the race and the kind of on-speed shape that can make a Heavy 10 look like a job for the local workhorse.
2. Emac (No.5) — $3.10 / $1.37
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.7% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.67x
Why Short for a reason, but still the obvious danger if it gets across early and doesn't have to do the hard work the long way.
3. Merchant Banker (No.2) — $7.00 / $2.15
Bet $5.50 Place — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 15.3% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.87x
Why The market has been into it and the horse has the right sort of wet-ground form to keep bobbing up when the leaders start breathing fire.
Roughie: Lacey Luck (No.6) — $14.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.1% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 0.93x
Why Fresh enough to be dangerous if the speed cooks, but the map says she'll need the front runners to hand her a nice seat.
Race 6 – The wet-track snack
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with See You In Beijing likely rolling forward and Brigit close enough to make life awkward. The wet ground should make honesty count.
Punty read: See You In Beijing is the short one, but in this sort of race you can make a case that the map is doing most of the heavy lifting. Brigit looks the nicest place play in the race - honest, well drawn and exactly the sort who can keep grinding. Horonuku is the live rough-value line, especially given the wet form and the market support, while Niagara Sky is the one you throw in the bin only if you like living dangerously.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.00 pool)
1. See You In Beijing (No.2) — $2.90 / $1.32
Bet $5.00 Win — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 22.8% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.84x
Why First-up profile says it can fire fresh, and from a decent map it doesn't have to do much more than hold its line and kick at the right time.
2. Brigit (No.6) — $4.20 / $1.60
Bet $7.00 Place — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 15.2% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.83x
Why Honest as the day is long and the wet track should let her keep grinding into the finish without needing a miracle.
3. Horonuku (No.5) — $9.00 / $2.45
Bet $6.00 Place — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 11.7% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.51x
Why The market has cottoned on, and the wet-ground record gives this bloke a very live path into the frame if the leaders don't get away with a picnic.
Roughie: Niagara Sky (No.4) — $9.50 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.16x
Why If this horse can hold a handy spot and not get swallowed by the slop, it can become a proper nuisance late.
Race 7 – The benchmark brawl
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Ryders Legacy expected to be up front and setting the terms. That makes the draw and the first 300m absolutely massive.
Punty read: Ryders Legacy is the horse they all have to run down, and the map says it'll get every chance to try and pinch it. Shameless Boy is the one who can tuck in and keep rolling, Madison has the class to be in the mix but doesn't scream value at the trip, and Ballroom Blitz is the roughie that can sneak into the frame if the race gets stoushy and the front end overcooks it.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Ryders Legacy (No.2) — $4.80 / $1.95
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 15.4% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.96x
Why Has the right map to roll forward and if it steals a breather, it could make the rest look like they're chasing a bus.
2. Shameless Boy (No.3) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.1% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.79x
Why Solid wet-track type who should stalk the speed and be there when the squeeze comes.
3. Madison (No.11) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.15x
Why She's honest enough, but from the draw and with the race shape, she's more the sort for exotics than a proper punt.
Roughie: Ballroom Blitz (No.6) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.1% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.36x
Why The wet track won't scare it, and if the leaders burn too much petrol this one can swoop into the minor money.
Race 8 – The closing chaos
Race type: Benchmark 75, 1800m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Overrated and The Finnster the likely leaders. This is where stamina, balance and a decent tactical brain matter more than swagger.
Punty read: This is the sort of race that can humble the cleverest punter alive. Overrated has the big wet-track profile and the market is into it for a reason, Nancy She Wrote is the class horse who can sit back and clobber them late, and Fulla Grace is the grinder who keeps giving after a suitable setup. Overdraft is the roughie that can absolutely land a punch if the leaders go a bit early like they've got somewhere better to be.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.00 pool)
1. Nancy She Wrote (No.3) — $3.60 / $1.55
Bet $9.50 Each Way ($4.75W + $4.75P) — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 15.1% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.71x
Why The class horse of the race, and if the backmarkers get a genuine enough tempo to latch onto, she can finish like a truck on a downhill.
2. Fulla Grace (No.9) — $4.80 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.01x
Why Perfectly capable of grinding into the frame if the race turns into a stamina test and the front end starts singing the blues.
3. Overrated (No.1) — $7.50 / $2.40
Bet $6.50 Place — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 13.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.99x
Why The wet-track profile is bang on and from the map it gets the chance to stalk and pounce if the tempo is honest.
Roughie: Overdraft (No.5) — $10.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.18x
Why If this turns into a war of attrition, the horse can be the one still coming when the others are waving the white towel.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
EARLY QUADDIE (R1-R4)
Smart: 10,1,3,5 / 3,1,9,2 / 7,9,2,8 / 6,5,1,10 (256 combos x $0.14 = $36.45) -- 14% flexi
Tight enough to keep it sane, but still wide enough that one ugly maiden run doesn't blow the whole thing to bits.
QUADDIE (R5-R8)
Smart: 3,5,2,6 / 2,6,5,4 / 2,11,6,3 / 9,3,1,5 (256 combos x $0.14 = $36.45) -- 14% flexi
R5 and R6 look like the anchor legs, while R7 and R8 are the ones that can blow your day up if you're not covered.
BIG 6 (R3-R8)
Smart: 7 / 6 / 3 / 2 / 2 / 3 (1 combos x $43.20 = $43.20) -- 4320% flexi
This is a proper grind-fest ticket: a couple of skinny legs, a couple of messy ones, and just enough coverage to keep the sicko dream alive without needing a second mortgage.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Heavy 10 + rail out 7m = map is king
If you're not near the speed in the early races, you're asking for trouble. The horses that can sit on or near the pace and keep their feet have the huge advantage.
2 - K T Myers and S A Sharrock are the yards to watch
Myers has the live map horses in Djibouti, Wing And A Prayer and Horonuku, while Sharrock keeps popping up with runners that are either firming, well drawn or simply built for this sort of slog.
3 - Race 8 is the sneaky pain in the arse of the card
It's the kind of staying race that can make a tidy day ugly in a hurry. If Overrated and Nancy She Wrote don't do the job, the quaddie gets very philosophical very quickly.
THE CHAOS KITCHEN
This is a proper mud day, legends - keep your nerve, trust the map, and don't start inventing miracles in races where the track's already doing the talking. If you've got a bet, make it count; if you've got doubt, keep the wallet in your pocket and let the race come to you. Gamble Responsibly.
