For all of Punty's tips for Northam, head to https://punty.ai/tips/northam-2026-06-18
Rightio Loose Units, Northam's serving up a Soft 6 with the rail +5m, and that usually means the first horse to get a breather and a clean crack at them gets first dibs on the cash. It ain't a day for picnic rides out the back fence if the tempo goes sour - a few of these look like proper map races, a couple look like pub brawls, and the rest are somewhere between a chess match and a demolition derby.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Northam, 1000m-2200m card
Rail: +5m Entire
Official going: Soft 6 (expected to play slightly on-pace friendly with clean runs)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 2°C, humidity 95%, wind 7km/h S (watch for a cold, holding surface and a bit of sting in the ground)
Early lane guess: Leaders and handy types with a tidy run should get first bite; don't get too brave coming from the carpark unless the pace melts
Tempo profile: A mixed bag - a couple of sit-and-sprint affairs, a few genuine burners, and more than one race where the map is worth its weight in beer
Jockeys to follow:
Ms Lucy Fiore - keeps popping up on horses with a live map and the right turn of foot
Steven Parnham - has a stack of serious rides and a knack for finding the right spot in these tricky Northam races
Ms Holly Nottle(a0/50kg) - the claim matters today, especially on the roughies and the lightweights
Stables to respect:
Mitchell Pateman (3 runners) - Bosun and Hezangelic are both right in the mix, and they map like horses that want to win rather than just make up the numbers
D & B Pearce (3 runners) - Under Influence, Soso Lucky and Perfectly Proper all look suited by the soft deck and the speed scenarios
N D Parnham (3 runners) - Western Miss, Call Me Invincible and Diamond Warrior give them a proper say in the card
Punty's take: This card feels like one of those Northam afternoons where the favourites are mostly fair, but not all of them are untouchable. The key is reading the map without getting hypnotised by the shiny odds - Race 1 looks like a slow-motion slog where Barraquito gets first crack, Race 2 has Bosun as the obvious anchor, and Race 4 is a chaos handicap straight out of Mad Max if the leaders knock each other out of the photo early.
The sprint races are where the old traps get sprung. Race 5 and Race 6 have enough pace to make the swoopers interesting, but only if the leaders overcook it. Race 7 is the kind of race where your best horse can still get buried if the jock goes to sleep at the wrong time, and Race 8 is a proper "who's got the right run" problem - the sort of thing that turns smart punters into philosophers over a stubby.
What it means for you: Don't go full meathead and spray the board. The day leans on a few clean anchors, then asks you to survive the open races without losing your shirt like a mug at a Blackjack table. If you're playing the quaddie, you need to treat the obvious ones like locks and protect the chaos legs - that's where the dividend gets made, not by trying to be a hero in every race.
Your best game is to let the soft-track map do the work. Horses drawn to control or stalk with cover are gold, and the ones needing luck from bad barriers need the race to fall in a heap. Keep the aggression for the races where the price and the pattern line up; in the knife-fights, take the insurance or cop the pain. That is punting, not poetry.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Barraquito (Race 1, No.7) — $1.48
Why He's the one with the clearest class edge in a race where they're likely to crawl early and sprint late, and he's the one they all have to run down.
2 - Bosun (Race 2, No.1) — $1.91
Why Maps midfield with the right kind of run, and in a soft-track maiden like this he's the one most likely to keep grinding while the others are flat out waving.
3 - Articole (Race 4, No.4) — $2.55
Why Short enough for a reason, but he's got the talent to overcome a sticky gate if the jock finds a clean spot before the race turns into chaos.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~7.20 = ~$72.00 collect
Race 1 – The Crawl and Sprint
Race type: Maiden, 2200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so this could turn into a proper sit-and-sprint where position and a clean lane matter more than raw stamina
Punty read: Barraquito is the horse they all need to beat, and that's fair enough - he's got the best chance to sit in the right spot when they finally ask for an effort. Mr Frodo keeps hanging around the placings and gets another go after a messy run, while Bhullar has market support and the sort of second-up profile that can sharpen him right up. If the race turns into a limp home, the one who can change gears first wins it.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Barraquito (No.7) — $1.48 / $1.15
Bet $15.00 Win, return $22.20
Prob 44.3% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.84x
Why The race shape suits him to a tee - slow tempo, no pressure, and he looks the one with the most upside when the sprint finally goes on.
2. Mr Frodo (No.2) — $4.45 / $1.80
Bet $5.00 Place, return $9.00
Prob 18.0% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.93x
Why He was badly inconvenienced last time and gets another shot at a better run, but the price and the saver line don't exactly scream value.
3. Bhullar (No.5) — $6.95 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.14x
Why The market has poked him in, and if he holds that second-up improvement he's right in the thick of it, but he's not the one to throw the kitchen sink at.
Roughie: Corso Venezia (No.6) — $18.00 / $5.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.1% | Place: 25.5% | Value: 0.94x
Why First-time gear can wake one up, and if the crawl turns into a muddling mess he can sneak a place with the right run.
Race 2 – The Bosun Job
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, but Bosun's midfield map and the soft track give him a nice tactical edge over the backmarkers
Punty read: Bosun looks the honest bloke in the room - not flashy, just the one that should get the right run and apply pressure when the whips come out. Olaf The Snowman has been heavily backed and you can see why: soft track, decent draw, and a stable/jockey setup that isn't here for a picnic. Dromore Castle is the sneaky one if he settles and doesn't give the field too much rope early, while Unwanted News has the gear tweak and enough dash to lob into the finish if they overdo it up front.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)
1. Bosun (No.1) — $1.91 / $1.22
Bet $15.50 Win, return $29.61
Prob 38.4% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 1.03x
Why He maps like the horse who gets the most comfortable run in the race, and on a soft 1300m this is exactly the sort of set-up that gets a stable grinning.
2. Olaf The Snowman (No.2) — $6.95 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.8% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.90x
Why The money's coming and the soft conditions help, but the saver line has him just outside the sweet spot.
3. Dromore Castle (No.3) — $8.15 / $2.40
Bet $4.50 Place, return $10.80
Prob 11.2% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.60x
Why One run is enough to know he's got a bit of engine, and if he finds the line cleanly he's the sort to pinch a place while the prettier types fluff about.
Roughie: Perfectly Proper (No.4) — $19.50 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.5% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.41x
Why The lightweight and the place profile make her a live hope to run into it if the race turns into a messy crawl.
Race 3 – The Midfield Mischief
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with enough speed to give the on-pacers a chance but not enough to make it a conveyor belt
Punty read: Western Miss is the one they all have to catch, and the map says she gets a fair crack at it from a decent enough draw in a race that shouldn't get too weird. Call Me Invincible has the best early boot, but the barrier and pace setup mean he's got to do a bit of work to make it count. Kings Park has the sort of profile that keeps punters honest, and Diamond Warrior is the roughie with the right sort of finish if they go too hard too early and hand the backmarkers their lunch.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.00 pool)
1. Western Miss (No.9) — $2.50 / $1.30
Bet $4.50 Win, return $11.25
Prob 23.2% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.98x
Why She looks the cleanest horse in the race on paper, and if she lands handy without burning petrol she'll take a power of running down.
2. Call Me Invincible (No.2) — $5.60 / $2.00
Bet $8.50 Place, return $17.00
Prob 15.5% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.71x
Why He can roll forward and give himself every chance, but the wide-ish map means the place is the smart play rather than asking him to carry the whole house.
3. Kings Park (No.6) — $6.20 / $2.10
Bet $3.00 Place, return $6.30
Prob 14.6% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.75x
Why The market's had a nibble, and with the right run in a moderate tempo he should be there when the whips are cracking.
Roughie: Diamond Warrior (No.1) — $11.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.88x
Why The draw isn't a gift, but if this turns into a genuine late dash he's the one that can swoop like a seagull on hot chips.
Race 4 – The Chaos Handicap
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, but this has all the hallmarks of a messy Northam scrape where barriers, intent and gear changes do the damage
Punty read: Articole is the class act, but barrier 11 means he doesn't get to strut around like a peacock - he'll need the jock to be alert from the jump. Fila Mia is a cleaner-map play than her last run suggests and dropping back in weight helps, while Cosmo Ruler has the gear first-time angle and the market has already started sniffing around. Watto's Warrior is the sort of roughie that can blow up the tote if the race gets strung out and the leaders go too hard too early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Articole (No.4) — $2.54 / $1.37
Bet $13.00 Win, return $33.09
Prob 25.9% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.01x
Why Best horse in the race, full stop - the only question is whether he gets the right run from the awkward gate.
2. Fila Mia (No.10) — $7.75 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.60x
Why The weight relief is handy and she's not without a hope, but the race shape and the price say keep the powder dry.
3. Cosmo Ruler (No.13) — $5.35 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.84x
Why First-time blinkers and tongue tie can spark a horse up, and the money says they're having a serious crack.
Roughie: Watto's Warrior (No.3) — $9.60 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.31x
Why If this turns into a scrap and not a procession, he can be the bloke picking up the pieces at a price.
Race 5 – The Baby Sprint
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo with a pace disadvantage for the back-end types, so position matters a hell of a lot
Punty read: Wrexham is the one to beat, but he's not being handed the race - he'll need to be sharp enough early to avoid getting trapped in traffic. Long Laugh is the grinder who keeps finding the line, and from a soft track that's a handy profile in a race where the others can start to paddle late. Champagne Cathay is the sneaky one with the gear change, but the map wants to make him earn every inch of it, which is why he's the roughie rather than the answer.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.50 pool)
1. Wrexham (No.6) — $2.75 / $1.37
Bet $11.00 Win, return $30.25
Prob 17.0% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.63x
Why On pure ability he's the one the rest are chasing, and if he jumps cleanly in a fast little 1000m dash he can boss them.
2. Salve Regina (No.9) — $5.60 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.4% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.56x
Why She's got enough ability to measure up, but the wide gate and the map mean you want a better price for the full send.
3. Long Laugh (No.2) — $6.20 / $2.20
Bet $6.50 Place, return $14.30
Prob 15.0% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.61x
Why Honest as the day is long and should be finishing off while others are coughing up their lunch.
Roughie: Champagne Cathay (No.10) — $9.15 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.23x
Why The first-time bit and a decent enough turn of foot make him the one that can ambush them if the speed collapses.
Race 6 – The Burner
Race type: Handicap (C5), 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot pace, with Hezangelic and Art Session likely to make the early shape and leave no hiding places
Punty read: Desert Dancing is the one with the map gift - barrier 1 in a hot 1000m on a soft deck is the sort of thing that makes trainers and punters purr. Hezangelic is a serious mover first-up and still has to be respected, but the race is likely to be run at breakneck speed and that makes the place play safer than trying to crowbar a win bet. Storm Away is the honest grinder with the gear change and the right kind of profile to sit just off the speed and make his run when the leaders are blowing bubbles. Chop Suey is the roughie if they burn each other into the ground.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.00 pool)
1. Desert Dancing (No.8) — $4.10 / $1.55
Bet $9.50 Each Way ($4.75W + $4.75P), return $19.47 (wins) / $7.36 (places)
Prob 22.5% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.19x
Why Perfect map, good gate, and the kind of race shape that lets him lob and pounce instead of doing all the donkey work.
2. Hezangelic (No.1) — $6.50 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.19x
Why The first-up stats and the track win say he's ready to go, but the day is already asking plenty of questions so we don't double-down.
3. Storm Away (No.4) — $5.60 / $1.95
Bet $6.50 Place, return $12.67
Prob 14.2% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.03x
Why He gets the right kind of stalking run and the gear change says they're trying to sharpen the thing up for a finish.
Roughie: Chop Suey (No.3) — $17.50 / $4.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.7% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.85x
Why If the leaders go silly and start drilling each other, this bloke can come flying from the clouds.
Race 7 – The Closer's Bar Fight
Race type: Handicap (Bm46+), 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with leaders on the speed but enough heat to give the backmarkers a sniff if they don't get trapped
Punty read: Call Of Duty is the right sort of horse for this sort of ugly little mile - backmarker, soft track, and enough class to make the map work if the front half starts overdoing it. Bird On A Wire is the obvious danger from the front end, but the race is full of horses who can get in each other's way and ruin a nice morning's work. He's Archie and Cherokee Miss both have the profile to land into the finish if the race is run like a Roman chariot race, and Worcester is the roughie who can make the locals groan if he finally puts it all together.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Call Of Duty (No.1) — $3.75 / $1.65
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), return $24.38 (wins) / $10.72 (places)
Prob 16.5% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 0.87x
Why He looks the horse most likely to get the last crack at them if the leaders go too hard and collapse into a heap.
2. Bird On A Wire (No.2) — $4.55 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.93x
Why If he gets it cheap enough on the front end, he'll give a sight, but the race shape isn't begging us to chase him.
3. He's Archie (No.5) — $5.95 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.21x
Why The drift says the market has cooled, but the horse still has the raw ability to run a big race if the tempo gets ugly enough.
Roughie: Worcester (No.3) — $28.00 / $6.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.5% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.35x
Why This is the one that could turn into a late swooper special if the pace is hot and the fence runners start to paddle.
Race 8 – The Big Finish
Race type: Handicap (C3), 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, and that usually means the runners with the best timing and the least traffic win the money
Punty read: I'm Odette is the one with the cleanest recent profile, and if she gets the right run from the awkward alley she can absolutely pinch this. True Fiction is the old reliable that keeps getting dragged into the market, but the drift says the crowd isn't exactly frothing over him. Soso Lucky has the consistency profile that matters in these races, and Belvedere Rock is the sort of handy horse that can put himself in the story early and stay there long enough to annoy the rest of them.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.00 pool)
1. I'm Odette (No.8) — $4.25 / $1.72
Bet $17.00 Each Way ($8.50W + $8.50P), return $36.12 (wins) / $14.62 (places)
Prob 16.7% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 1.05x
Why She's got the winning habit, and on a genuine tempo she gets her chance to blend in and let the race unfold in front of her.
2. True Fiction (No.1) — $6.25 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.3% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.15x
Why The run last time said he wasn't disgraced, but the drift and the map mean he's more a threat than a bet.
3. Soso Lucky (No.2) — $8.45 / $2.90
Bet $5.00 Place, return $14.50
Prob 12.3% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 1.55x
Why He keeps finding the line, and if the leaders stop to a jog after a genuine tempo, he's the one who can go past a few tired legs.
Roughie: Rommeo (No.4) — $19.25 / $5.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.9% | Place: 25.5% | Value: 1.12x
Why The gear shuffle can wake him up, but he needs the race to fall apart in front of him.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
EARLY QUADDIE (R1-R4)
Smart: 7,2,5 / 1,10,2,3 / 9,2,6,1 / 4,13,10,3 (192 combos x $0.10 = $20.00) -- 10% flexi
Two banker-ish legs to start, then the wheels wobble a bit through R3 and R4 - solid enough for a play, but not the sort of ticket you'd mortgage the barbecue for.
QUADDIE (R5-R8)
Smart: 6,9,2,10 / 8,4,1 / 1,2,5,4 / 8,1,2,7 (192 combos x $0.17 = $32.00) -- 17% flexi
This is pure entertainment with a bit of structure - four races, four headaches, and enough open-end danger to keep the heart rate where it should be on a Thursday.
BIG 6 (R3-R8)
Smart: 9 / 4 / 6 / 8 / 1 / 8 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2.00) -- 200% flexi
That's a hail-mary ticket for the sickos - one runner in every leg and a prayer to the racing gods, which is about as subtle as a drunken saxophone.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Soft 6, rail +5m, map matters
This isn't the day to ignore position. Horses able to land handy or get the first run at them should get every chance, especially in the sprints and those messy mid-grade races.
2 - The money is whispering a few stories
Olaf The Snowman, Leg Godt, Cangrande, Cosmo Ruler, Desert Dancing, Lieutenant Dunbar and Pat's Last Bang have all seen serious market interest. When the smoke clears, one of those moves is going to look very clever.
3 - First-time gear is everywhere, which is never boring
Northam has thrown us blinkers, tongue ties, ear muffs, visors, winkers and nose tweaks all over the card. That means somebody's about to level up, and somebody else is about to look like they were dressed in the dark.
THE LOOSE UNIT LOUNGE
Northam's got the kind of card where the clever punter gets paid for reading the map and not falling in love with every favourite in sight. Keep the anchors tight, don't get greedy in the chaos legs, and let the races come to you like a decent counterpunch in Rocky. Gamble Responsibly.
