Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Riccarton Park, head to https://punty.ai/tips/riccarton-park-2026-06-16
Rightio Loose Units, Riccarton's got a proper winter mug on it today - Soft 7, raining, rail out, and a card full of races where a nice trip matters more than looking pretty in the parade ring. This is not the day to get cute and pretend you're Ryan Gosling in a raincoat; you want horses that can hold a spot, handle the muck, and finish with intent.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Riccarton Park, 1200m to 1600m card
Rail: Out 6m to the 1000m then 8m to winning post
Official going: Soft 7 (expected to play wet, tactical, and a bit of a grind)
Weather: Raining (watch for the deck getting chewed up and the fence turning into a trap)
Early lane guess: On-pace and handy runners should get the first crack; swoopers need luck and a bit of straight-line clear air
Tempo profile: Race 1 and Race 6 look genuinely run, Race 4 is a slow-burn scrap, and the middle races are a mix of steady pressure and tactical bluff
Jockeys to follow:
Tina Comignaghi — gets the right sort of rides in R1 and R3, and on a wet day that's gold if she lands midfield with cover.
Akshay Balloo — all over the card on runners with live claims and a few neat maps; if he lands one near the speed, it gets interesting.
Mereana Hudson — keeps finding herself on horses with enough upside to cause a wobble, especially when the track gets testing.
Stables to respect:
Steven Woodsford (5 runners) — has a pile of maidens and a couple with genuine upside; if one of his is ready, it can come out of nowhere like a Marvel post-credit scene.
Andrew Carston (4 runners) — plenty of runners in races where position and timing matter, and a few of his are drawn to get every chance.
J Land (4 runners) — not the flashiest yard on the sheet, but there are a couple of honest types in the right races and that's enough to make life annoying for the rest of us.
Punty's take: This meeting screams balance over bravado. The rain and the rail-out combo usually makes the track more about rhythm than heroics, so the horses that can hold a spot and keep coming are the ones you want on your side. Races 1, 3, 5 and 6 have enough pace and map shape to be solved by the right horse in the right run; Race 4 is the grubby little alley fight where half the field can win if the right door opens.
The first thing I like here is that the card has a few runners that simply look better suited than their prices suggest. Honor The Name, Unshackled, Don Pauly and Yoo Hoo Joy all map like proper punters' horses - not flashy, not pretending to be Black Caviar, just honest enough to keep turning up when it gets messy. That matters today. If you're chasing one of those fancy photo-finish swoopers from the back, you might be watching the post-race replay with your head in your hands while some honest on-pacer nicked the money.
The other angle is the drifters. Plenty are leaking like a busted esky, and in wet midwinter conditions that's usually a clue someone doesn't fancy the map, the footing, or both. I'm not saying every drift is a death sentence - racing's a bastard like that - but when the market starts cooling on a horse and the form doesn't scream "get on", I'm happy to look elsewhere and let the others chew the bait.
What it means for you: Don't go swinging like a busted pendulum today. This is a day for clean setups and a bit of discipline. The safer plays are the horses with wet-track manners, a sensible run style, and a map that doesn't require seven miracles and a crowbar. I'm happy to lean on the stronger races for win-and-place style bets, and I'm not scared to take the place on a couple where the right shape is there but the market is a bit too hot.
The close ones should be treated with respect rather than ego. Races 4 and 5 are the ones where you can get suckered into overbetting the shiny name; that's how the bookies buy the next boat. The better plan is to stick to the logical runners, spread a bit wider in the chaos races, and let the numbers do the heavy lifting without trying to be a hero in the mud.
If you're having a crack at the multi or the quaddie, keep the legs sensible. There are a few standouts, but the meeting isn't giving away free lunches. The trick today is not finding the single impossible blowout - it's avoiding the obvious banana skins and backing the horses with a map, a run style, and enough wet-day grunt to finish the job.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Honor The Name (Race 1, No.12) — $3.75
Why Maps handy, gets a fair go from the draw, and looks the one the race has to run through if the speed isn't suicidal.
2 - Thats Charming (Race 2, No.1) — $4.90
Why Honest type in a winnable race, and if the tempo's only moderate he'll be right in the firing line when they straighten.
3 - Unshackled (Race 3, No.11) — $4.90
Why The one they're all chasing in a maiden that doesn't look like giving away much; if she gets a clean run, she'll take beating.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~90.04 = ~900.38 collect
Race 1 – The Pavilion Opening November 2026 Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, with Noivern likely to roll along and a few others trying to get into the right spot
Punty read: This is the "who gets the cleanest run?" race. The map says there's enough pressure to sort the pretenders, and on a wet day that usually means the horse sitting the nicest, not the horse with the biggest ego. Honor The Name is the one I want stalking the speed without burning petrol, Tinuviel is the obvious danger if she gets the run of the race, and Ifyoustartmeup is the sort that keeps showing up without quite pinning it - the honest mate who always turns up late but still brings a six-pack. Noivern is the roughie with a path if the front end gets too rich and the leaders fold like a cheap deckchair.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)
1. Honor The Name (No.12) — $3.75 / $1.65
Bet $17.00 Each Way ($8.50W + $8.50P), return $31.88 (wins) / $14.02 (places)
Prob 19.7% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.87x
Why Handles this sort of slog better than most and maps to get the right trail without doing too much work.
2. Tinuviel (No.11) — $3.55 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.2% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.96x
Why She's the obvious one in the race on raw ability, but at the quote I'm happy to let her do the lifting for the others rather than go in too hard.
3. Ifyoustartmeup (No.1) — $5.40 / $2.15
Bet $5.50 Place, return $11.82
Prob 16.1% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.80x
Why Keeps finding a way into the finish even when things go wrong, and on a wet deck from a good draw he can sit there and nick a slice.
Roughie: Noivern (No.2) — $15.75 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.47x
Why If the leaders overdo it, this little drifter can pinch the pegs and run on late when the others are gasping.
Race 2 – NZB Weanling Sale 25 June Hcp (60)
Race type: Restricted 60, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, which usually means the horse with the cleanest position gets first refusal
Punty read: Not a lottery, but not far off one. Thats Charming has the right sort of profile for this setup, Leedox keeps hanging around the right races but the market's not exactly throwing roses at him, and Dujour is the sneaky one who can land on the bunny and make life awkward for the more fashionable types. Avitus is the roughie with a wet-track path if the race turns into a bit of a grind and the front runners get stitched up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Thats Charming (No.1) — $4.90 / $2.00
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $25.73 (wins) / $10.50 (places)
Prob 13.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.97x
Why Rock-solid enough for this grade and should get every chance from the gate without needing a miracle.
2. Leedox (No.2) — $6.85 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.10x
Why There's enough soft-track evidence there to keep him in the mix, but the market's already given him a knock and I don't want to chase the drift.
3. Explosive Lass (No.4) — $5.90 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.94x
Why Can find the right part of the race, but she'll need the map to soften up a bit to justify diving in.
Roughie: Avitus (No.3) — $9.30 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.20x
Why If the race turns into a proper slog and the tempo doesn't explode, this bloke can bob up late and make the favourites earn every inch.
Race 3 – Vale Anne Herbert Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with Ikidunot and Flavours likely trying to control the rhythm
Punty read: This is a classic "who wants it more?" maiden. Unshackled is the one with the strongest profile and the right kind of map if the leaders don't kick away too early, Givemeadance is the sort who can sit handy and keep the pressure on, and Enchanted Dream is the place play if you're expecting the race to sort itself out in stages. Rufus is the roughie because these soft 1400s can turn into attritional dogfights, and he's one of the few who can cling on and keep coming if the others go to sleep.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)
1. Unshackled (No.11) — $4.90 / $2.00
Bet $14.50 Each Way ($7.25W + $7.25P), return $35.53 (wins) / $14.50 (places)
Prob 13.2% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.65x
Why Strongest overall profile in the race and has the right enough map if the leaders don't turn it into a sprint-home.
2. Givemeadance (No.14) — $5.90 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.10x
Why Honest enough and fresh enough to make a fist of it, but I want the race to fall her way rather than force the issue.
3. Enchanted Dream (No.12) — $9.10 / $3.20
Bet $5.50 Place, return $17.60
Prob 10.7% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.75x
Why The kind of mare that can keep finding under pressure and run into the placings when the race gets gritty.
Roughie: Rufus (No.5) — $9.10 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.6% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.58x
Why If they crawl early and it turns into a stamina test, he'll be one of the blokes still breathing at the end.
Race 4 – Grand National Tickets On Sale Now Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, which usually means positions matter less than timing and who gets the first crack
Punty read: Absolute banana skin. This is the race where everyone thinks they're a genius and ends up staring at the sky after the last. Full Of Gusto is the one I trust to be in the right spot when it matters, Surprise Inside has the place profile but not the price for me to go silly, and Just A Brown Horse is the sort of runner that can get involved without necessarily being the right bet. Sarracina is the roughie, but she's going to need the whole thing to turn into a bit of a mess - think The Two Towers, but with more mud and less dignity.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Full Of Gusto (No.1) — $5.90 / $2.20
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), return $38.35 (wins) / $14.30 (places)
Prob 14.0% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.22x
Why Gets a workable map in a race where a bit of tactical nous matters more than flash form.
2. Surprise Inside (No.12) — $5.90 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.65x
Why The place numbers are there, but I'm not paying up to find out whether she gets the right run or ends up bailed up.
3. Just A Brown Horse (No.3) — $4.90 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.25x
Why His best stuff says he's right in the fight, but from the way this race maps, he needs a few things to fall over.
Roughie: Sarracina (No.14) — $9.30 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 0.80x
Why Wide gate, slow tempo, and a lot of hoping - she'll need the race to unravel in front of her like a dodgy IKEA shelf.
Race 5 – Cup Week Hospitality On Sale 29 June Hcp (62)
Race type: Restricted 62, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with a few likely to sit midfield and try to wind it up late
Punty read: This is where the card gets properly tricky. Proclamation is the one the market has a look at, but Trader Inn is the horse I keep coming back to for value - maps cleanly enough and has a sneaky route through the race. Freedom Reins is the place line with a decent enough shape, while Adios Vamonos is the roughie with a legitimate path if the tempo gets honest and the better fancied ones overcook it. It's the sort of race that can pay for your next slab if you don't get greedy.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.00 pool)
1. Proclamation (No.2) — $4.90 / $2.00
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), return $31.85 (wins) / $13.00 (places)
Prob 13.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.92x
Why Good enough to be right in it if the run from barrier 12 doesn't turn into a picnic for the backmarkers.
2. Trader Inn (No.7) — $6.80 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.28x
Why The map is decent and the horse is honest; if the race gets strung out, he's the one that can bully his way into the finish.
3. Freedom Reins (No.8) — $7.55 / $2.80
Bet $5.00 Place, return $14.00
Prob 10.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.16x
Why The soft track and the run style line up well enough that a place is the clean play.
Roughie: Uraskyfullastars (No.6) — $12.75 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.5% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.82x
Why If they go a bit too hard and the leaders turn to glue, this one can be the late-night cousin who shows up after the party's already gone weird.
Race 6 – Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Hcp (62)
Race type: Restricted 62, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, with Cutout likely to roll and a few others wanting a say early
Punty read: Best race on the card for a proper finish, and the market may be overdoing it with Verdian. Don Pauly is the one I want on top - maps sweet, fit enough, and looks set up to keep coming when the speed horses start looking for an ambulance. Yoo Hoo Joy is the place line I can live with, while Pretty Fly has enough upside to be respected if the race turns into a genuine war of attrition. Orsome Dude is the roughie and, if the front end goes too hot, he'll be the one lunging late like he's trying to steal the remote off the couch.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.00 pool)
1. Don Pauly (No.4) — $4.20 / $1.85
Bet $11.50 Each Way ($5.75W + $5.75P), return $24.15 (wins) / $10.64 (places)
Prob 16.8% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.00x
Why The map suits, the tempo suits, and this is exactly the sort of race where a horse sitting in the right spot can pinch it late.
2. Verdian (No.2) — $2.83 / $1.37
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 0.59x
Why The market has him fancied, but at the quote he's short enough to make me squint, especially with the race likely to be run at a decent clip.
3. Yoo Hoo Joy (No.9) — $7.10 / $2.70
Bet $6.50 Place, return $17.55
Prob 12.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.21x
Why Maps well enough, handles the sort of race shape where the leaders can get softened up, and the price says he's worth a poke.
Roughie: Orsome Dude (No.7) — $15.75 / $4.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.7% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 0.82x
Why Needs the speed battle to go full Mad Max, but if it does, he's the one charging through the smoke.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
QUADDIE (R3-R6)
Smart: 11,14,12,5 / 1,12,3,14 / 2,7,8 / 4,2,9,10 (192 combos x $0.21 = $40.50) -- 21% flexi
Proper survival ticket: one tighter leg, three messy ones, and enough cover to avoid getting pantsed by the first drift of the day.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Wet-day map matters more than romance
On a Soft 7 with rain hanging around, horses that settle handy and keep trucking are the ones you want. The swoopers need the race to fall apart, and that's a rude way to make a living.
2 - The drifters are waving a few red flags
Races 1, 3, 5 and 6 have horses the market has cooled on, and a fair few of those are cooling for a reason. Don't blindly chase what used to be short if the map has gone stale.
3 - Andrew Carston and Steven Woodsford have plenty of live darts
They're not just filling races - they've got runners spread through the meeting that can land in the right spots. That's the sort of stable shape you want when the track gets tiring and the race turns into a chess match with mud.
FINAL WORD FROM THE DEGEN DEN
This is one of those Riccarton days where the blokes who want to fight the map usually get mugged by the bloke who just sits there and does the job. Keep the ego in the glovebox, trust the wet-track workers, and don't be afraid to take the place line when the win price is a bit too cute. Gamble Responsibly.
