Rightio Ratbags, Warrnambool on a Soft 6 with the rail out 6m and a gusty overcast day to boot, and eight races of wet-track maidens and benchmark battlers that will chew up anyone who doesn't read the form properly. Grab a coffee, grab a pen, and let's work out who's going to be standing when the dust settles.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Warrnambool, 1000m to 2000m card
Rail: Out 6m Entire Circuit
Official going: Soft 6 (nil rainfall last 24 hours, 17.4mm last 7 days)
Weather: Overcast, gusts 27.8km/h, rain risk 40%+ chance at 05:00
Early lane guess: Unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Genuine pace in Races 1, 2, 3 and 8, a Hot pace in Race 4 with four named leaders, and Moderate pace in Races 5, 6 and 7.
Jockeys to follow:
John Allen: Six rides on the card, including Bogey Free ($2.40) in Race 3 and Dealer Sing ($7.50) in Race 8.
Linda Meech: Six rides, with Fammi ($1.40) in Race 4 the one that matters most to my card.
Dean Yendall: Three rides, with Pastoral King ($3.90) in Race 6 the pick and Cachink ($6.50) in Race 8 the one to watch.
Stables to respect:
C Maher (7 runners): Bogey Free, Invisible Magic and Nordic Strike give them three of the day's more dangerous looks.
Maddie Raymond & Patrick Bell (7 runners): Empire Fella and Zercardy are both in the mix, and they've got the depth to make a few of these races messy.
Shane Jackson (4 runners): Tuscan Rose ($3.10) and Secret Crossing ($4.40) are both respected here, and the second one has been heavily backed.

Punty's take: The speed map tells the story for me. Race 4 is the only race with a genuine fight at the front, with four horses wanting the lead from barriers 1, 2, 4 and 8, so the sitters in that race need to be watched. Races 5, 6 and 7 are Moderate paces where nobody is clearly going to lead them off, so that's where tactics and jockey smarts come in. The banker races on paper are Race 1 and Race 7, where the shape and market agree. Race 2 is the chaos race where the front-runner Hoodys Horse is the one that can hijack the speed, and Race 8 is open with a lot of runners who want to get involved.

What it means for you: Be aggressive on Fammi in Race 4 and on Du Clisson in Race 7 because both are backed by heavy money and the map leaves them in a decent place. Protect yourself in Race 2 and Race 8 with smaller stakes and the place options, because those races are wide open. The value sits with the each way plays, and the trifecta and quaddie tickets are built to catch a result, not to pay like a lottery.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Fammi (Race 4, No.10) — $1.40
Why Heavy money has come into her from $2.70 to $1.40, and Linda Meech and Tom Dabernig have been finding winners at this track. She's barrier 11 in a 1000m sprint, which I don't love, but the price says the market already knows she's the best of them.
2 - Paramount War (Race 1, No.4) — $2.55
Why Warrnambool 2nd last start, 0.5L back, and the map has him midfield with the shape helping him. His track form here is two seconds from three starts, and Tom Ryan has been good on him.
3 - Du Clisson (Race 7, No.4) — $2.30
Why Track form is strong (1 win, 1 second, 1 third from 3 starts on the track), and the sectionals show time fastest. The shape is against him on a moderate pace, so he has to win this on class and his own sectional speed.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 8.21 = $82.10

Race 1 – Jericho Cup

Race type: Maiden, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace on paper, with Rang A Round Up the only leader from barrier 1 and nothing handy to challenge him. Paramount War settles midfield from barrier 8, and the shape helps him at a map factor of 1.02. The back-half runners from barriers 7 to 9 need cover, so the wide draws are the ones with the most to prove.
Punty read: Paramount War is the bet here, and I like that he's already been in the money at this track and the shape suits. Ned Kelly is the danger on the speed map, and he's the one to watch if the market keeps hammering him. Rang A Round Up is the leader and I'd want to see him hold his ground, not just fall away.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Paramount War (No.4) — $2.60 / $1.13
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $24.25 if it wins ($16.90 win + $7.35 place), $7.35 if it only places
Prob 37.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.97x Steady since tip
Why Warrnambool 2nd last start with a 0.5L margin, the shape helps him from midfield, and he's a seasoned maiden with three placings from ten starts.
2. Ned Kelly (No.3) — $1.90 / $1.07
Bet Tracked
Prob 36.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.69x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Rang A Round Up (No.5) — $8.50 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why Leads uncontested and has blinkers (one side only, right/off side) on for the first time, so he's a genuine speed threat if the gear sharpens him up.

Roughie: Rollin'ontheriver (No.9) — $10.00 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.81x Steady since tip
Why He's a midfield runner who'll be ridden for a run from barrier 4, and if the leader gets run down late he can get home in the money.

Race 2 – May Racing Carnival

Race type: Benchmark 62, 1700m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Hoodys Horse the only leader from barrier 5, and nearest pressure from Both Sides Now (barrier 4), Whistler Girl and a line of ON-PACE runners behind him. Newcombe, Reel Hot and Duhlata are all drawn wide and have to work to get across. Heed The Omens is settling back from barrier 6, and the shape is against him at a map factor of 0.92.
Punty read: Heed The Omens is the bet, and I'll back him to win the race with the each-way cover because his soft form is good (4 starts on soft, 1 win, 1 second). He's got a strong combo with Dean Parker and Symon Wilde at the track, and he's the one in the market with real confidence behind him. The shape is against him, but a horse that can run 4th at Warrnambool last start over 1400m isn't going to be knocked over by a fast pace alone. Hoodys Horse is the danger on the front if nobody wants to take him on, and Both Sides Now is the one who can sit right behind the leader.

Top 3 + Roughie ($4.00 pool)

1. Heed The Omens (No.1) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet $4.00 Each Way ($2.00W + $2.00P), collects $14.00 if it wins ($10.00 win + $4.00 place), $4.00 if it only places
Prob 17.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.87x Steady since tip
Why Four starts on soft with a win and a second, plus a combo of 28.8% from 59 rides with Dean Parker and Symon Wilde. He's a bit of a grinder who can win a race from behind if the speed collapses.
2. Both Sides Now (No.4) — $4.60 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.69x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Crossoverkid (No.6) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why He's been unlucky with wide runs and he has the sectional speed, with blinkers going on for the first time to lift his focus.

Roughie: Hoodys Horse (No.5) — $12.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.01x Steady since tip
Why He gets the lead uncontested, and if nobody wants to take him on early he can run a long way before the back markers get home.

Race 3 – The Midfield Group Emerging Stars Series Heat 3

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Tuscan Rose the only leader from barrier 8 and nothing handy. Normandy Peace is the back-half runner who needs cover from barrier 10. Tuscan Rose is the one most hurt by the pace at a map factor of 0.83, so the shape is against the leader and he has to win this on his own speed.
Punty read: Tuscan Rose is the bet, with the sectionals showing time fastest and a 2nd at Warrnambool 1400m last start that backs up his form. The shape is against him, but he is at the front with no one pushing him, so he's a bold pick. Bogey Free is the danger because the market has him at $2.40, and that's a price I'm not chasing with my money.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Tuscan Rose (No.10) — $3.10 / $1.40
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $29.25 if it wins ($20.15 win + $9.10 place), $9.10 if it only places
Prob 25.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why Second at Warrnambool 1400m last start, time fastest in the sectionals, and a 1-0-1 record at the track. He's a leader with no one pushing him and the market has rated him.
2. Bogey Free (No.1) — $2.45 / $1.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.5% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.62x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Grandpa Neil (No.2) — $5.50 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why A 2nd at Caulfield Heath last start and he's been drifting out to $5.50, so he's one to watch if the market settles.

Roughie: Circles Of Life (No.7) — $11.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why Winkers go on for the first time, and with no form on the record he's a pure gamble, but if the favourites falter he can slip into the placings.

Race 4 – Michelin Service Centre Warrnambool

Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot pace with four named leaders: Hughie's Spirit from barrier 2, Mamzelle Raine from barrier 1, Tycoonette from barrier 4 and Sloane Raider from barrier 8. That's a fight at the front, and Sloane Raider is hurt most by the pace at a map factor of 0.83. Little Gangster is the one drawn wide from barrier 10 and has to work to cross.
Punty read: Fammi is the bet here because the market has been hammering her from $2.70 to $1.40, and the trainer and jockey combo has form. She's an unknown on the map, so I'm not going to pretend I know where she'll settle, but with four horses fighting for the lead she's likely to be handy. The hot pace should set up a mid-race lull for anyone who sits behind the speed, and Tycoonette is the one who can take advantage of a fast early tempo.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Fammi (No.10) — $1.50 / $1.04
Bet $15.00 Win, return $22.50
Prob 42.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.64x Steady since tip
Why Heavy money in from $2.70, strong trainer hit rate at this track in the last 100 runs, and she's a banker-type price in a race that is set up to be run hard.
2. Hughie's Spirit (No.2) — $5.50 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 59.2% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Empire Fella (No.9) — $9.50 / $2.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why A debutant with a strong jockey record here (John Allen), and the gear changes on the day tell me the stable has a plan.

Roughie: Tycoonette (No.8) — $11.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 37.3% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why She is on the speed and has sectionals showing L600 rank 2 and L400 rank 2, so if the front runners go hard and fade, she can pick up the pieces from the lead.

Race 5 – Cassign Emerging Stars Series Heat 4

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with nobody mapping to lead outright, and a list of likely leaders from Lange Nelle (barrier 2) through to Enniscrone and Zercardy. Semper Augustus and Perfect Dismount are drawn wide from barriers 11 and 12. Leona is settling back from barrier 9, and the shape helps her at a map factor of 1.03.
Punty read: Leona is my bet. She's had blinkers, cross-over nose band and tongue tie all go on for the first time, and the sectionals show L600 fastest, L400 fastest and time fastest. Carleen Hefel has the ride from barrier 9. Perfect Dismount is the one to stop, because he's a stayer's sprinter and he's got a strong place record here. Big Vee is the danger on the form, and I'd want to see him close off a moderate pace.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Leona (No.10) — $2.50 / $1.37
Bet $15.00 Win, return $37.50
Prob 33.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why Second at Warrnambool 1000m last start with the blinkers on and the sectionals to back up the claim. The shape suits a horse who sits off a moderate pace and makes ground late.
2. Perfect Dismount (No.13) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.91x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Big Vee (No.1) — $7.50 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why A 4th at Hamilton 1100m last start and he has a 2nd at this track, so he's the value option if the market continues to underestimate him.

Roughie: Celestaria (No.14) — $9.50 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.93x Steady since tip
Why Sectionals show L400 fastest and time fastest, and she's been running well in her Warrnambool trials. If the pace is moderate and the leader fades, she can run home.

Race 6 – S & S O'Keefe Bricklaying

Race type: Benchmark 62, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Ballynacally (barrier 6) and Accuser (barrier 1) contesting the lead. Secret Crossing is disadvantaged at a map factor of 0.83 and Icy Pole and Secret Crossing are both drawn wide from barriers 9 and 10. Pastoral King is handy from barrier 5, and the shape is against him at a map factor of 0.92.
Punty read: Pastoral King is the bet with a 1st at Warrnambool 1200m last start, which is the best form in the race. The shape is against him, but a horse who has won over this trip and is race fit can run through the field from a handy position. Ballynacally is the danger because he's got the top jockey and a 2nd at this track. Secret Crossing has been heavily backed but the shape is against him.

Top 3 + Roughie ($9.50 pool)

1. Pastoral King (No.5) — $4.00 / $1.70
Bet $9.50 Win, return $38.00
Prob 17.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Last-start winner at Warrnambool 1200m, and his track and distance record is perfect. The shape is against him, but a horse who is race fit and travelling well from barrier 5 doesn't need the lead.
2. King West (No.3) — $5.00 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.7% | Place: 42.8% | Value: 0.89x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.95 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Ballynacally (No.2) — $5.50 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.82x Steady since tip
Why Leads the field from barrier 6 and has two wins from three starts at a 1200m-ish trip, so he's a serious lead threat.

Roughie: Battle Of The Ice (No.9) — $21.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.4% | Place: 17.0% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why A 4th at Kyneton last start and he's midfield from barrier 8. The concern is that he's 0 wins from 6 at 58-63kg, so he needs the weight to ease and the pace to fall apart for him to be the one who runs down the field.

Race 7 – Sungold Milk

Race type: Benchmark 62, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Twister (barrier 3) and Francine (barrier 6) contesting the lead. Nordic Strike, Leantothemoon and Meisho are all handy and hurt by the expected pace at a map factor of 0.83. Du Clisson settles handy from barrier 4 and the shape is against him at a map factor of 0.92.
Punty read: Du Clisson is my bet. The sectional time is fastest, he has Shayleigh Ingelse on board, and his track record is 1 win and 1 second from 3 starts on the track. The shape is against him, but a horse with his sectional speed can make up ground late. Nordic Strike is the danger, with a 2nd at Geelong last start and the top speed rating in the race. The market has Crickwood at $3.70 and he's worth a look if the favourite stays out of the market.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Du Clisson (No.4) — $2.30 / $1.17
Bet $15.00 Win, return $34.50
Prob 34.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why Time fastest and L600 rank 2 in the sectionals, a 1-1-0 track record, and he's back from a 154-day spell with 1 win and 2 seconds from 3 first-up starts.
2. Nordic Strike (No.1) — $5.50 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.6% | Place: 60.3% | Value: 1.08x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Crickwood (No.7) — $3.70 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.5% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.61x Steady since tip
Why Barrier blanket on for the first time and he's been firming from $4.20 to $3.70, so the market is backing him for a reason.

Roughie: Leantothemoon (No.2) — $9.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why He's a horse who won at Moe and Bendigo 800m earlier this year and ran 4th at Pakenham Synthetic last start. The leaders are both there, so if they go hard he has a path to run on.

Race 8 – TAB

Race type: Benchmark 62, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Dealer Sing the only leader from barrier 2, and nearest pressure from Cachink and Frosty Night. Asal, Sotomayor and Charming Deel are all drawn wide and have to work to cross. Invisible Magic is settling midfield from barrier 4, and the shape is against him at a map factor of 0.92.
Punty read: Invisible Magic is the bet and I'll back him each way because his form is strong (2nd at Warrnambool 1400m last start, with 1 win and 1 second from 2 starts on soft). Zac Moore has the ride from barrier 4 and that's a good draw for a midfield runner. Dealer Sing is the danger on the lead, and if nobody is going to challenge him early he's a real threat. Charming Deel is the one who can run through a fast pace from behind.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Invisible Magic (No.4) — $4.00 / $1.70
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), collects $29.93 if it wins ($21.00 win + $8.93 place), $8.93 if it only places
Prob 19.9% | Place: 54.1% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why 2nd at Warrnambool 1400m last start, sectionals rank 2 at both L600 and L400, and a place record that's strong at this distance.
2. Charming Deel (No.17) — $3.90 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.59x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Dealer Sing (No.3) — $7.50 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why Leads uncontested from barrier 2, with a win from his only soft start. If nobody challenges him early he's dangerous.

Roughie: Asal (No.9) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.5% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.62x Steady since tip
Why He's a closer drawn wide from barrier 15 with a tongue tie on for the first time. If the leaders go hard and fade, he has the sectionals to get into the placings.

SEQUENCE LANES

EARLY QUADDIE (R1-R4)

Smart: 4,3 / 4,1,6 / 10,1,2 / 10,2,9 (54 combos x $0.3704 = $20.00) -- 37% flexi
Punty's take: Paramount War and Ned Kelly keep R1 reasonably tight, R2 and R3 are open, and Fammi with Hughie's Spirit closes out R4 at a decent price. A 41.7% flexi is solid for a $20 ticket, and it's a moderate-risk play where a single big-priced winner in R2 or R3 would make it pay well.

QUADDIE (R5-R8)

Smart: 10,13,1 / 2,5,3 / 4,7,1 / 4,17,3,9 (108 combos x $0.3704 = $40.00) -- 37% flexi
Punty's take: Leona, Perfect Dismount and Big Vee hold R5 tight-ish, R6 and R8 are open, and Du Clisson is the anchor in R7. A 39.5% flexi is the floor and it's a fair play for $32, but a quaddie only pays well if one of the long shots in R6 or R8 comes home.

BIG 6 (R3-R8)

Smart: 10,1,2,3,7 / 10,2,9,3,8 / 10,13,1,14,6 / 2,5,3 / 4,7,1 / 4,17,3,9 (4500 combos x $0.00111 = $5.00) -- 0.11% flexi
Punty's take: This one's entertainment only. Six legs with multiple runners in most of them makes it a long shot that requires every leg to fall right, and the 0.12% flexi floor is honest about how thin the chance is. Put it on for the fun of it, not as a serious bet.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Blinkers on, first time, one side only
Rang A Round Up (Race 1, No.5) goes into the blinkers (one side only, right/off side) for the first time, and he's been a leader on the map. Watch the start.
2 - Tongue tie and blinkers going on for Leona
Leona (Race 5, No.10) has blinkers, cross-over nose band and tongue tie all on for the first time, and her sectionals show fastest L600, fastest L400 and fastest time. That's a horse who's been prepared for a change of plans.
3 - Heavy money in the morning
Secret Crossing (Race 6, No.11) has been slashed from $9.00 to $4.40 on heavy money, and Shane Jackson is the trainer. Whoever is putting the money on knows something, or they just think the price is too big.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Soft ground, a gusty day and eight races of pure chaos. Back the picks, respect the favourites, and if your roughie comes home, buy the mate who doubted you a beer.
