Five starts, five wins, never past 2000m, drawn 19 of 20. Proxima Dea has the perfect record and a ready-made excuse, and both are in play on Thursday.

Proxima Dea is five from five, won a Group 1 at Randwick last start, and the market has her at $2.56. We make her 39.1%, a fair price of $2.55, so the edge is +0.4%. That is the most likely winner priced almost exactly right. It is not a bargain, and it is not a rip-off. It is a good horse at a fair price, which in a 20-horse Group 1 is about as much as anyone gets.

The complication is the draw and the trip. She is in barrier 19 and she has never gone beyond 2000m. Her record on Good, Soft and Heavy tracks is all wins, so the showers are not a worry. The 2500m is a genuine question we can't answer from her form. Our numbers keep her on top anyway, but a horse we rate at 39.1% still loses more often than it wins, and that is just what the number means.

The danger is De Armas for Waller, who won the Group 2 Wakeful-type lead-up over 2000m here five days ago and now has James McDonald aboard. We make her 23.9% against a market $3.15, which makes her the most overbet of the leading chances. Icelady, Quick Finish and a swarm of backmarkers fill the rest. The one runner our numbers like more than the market is the roughie, Tharwa at $36.00 against our $32.05, an edge of +12.3%. She needs a lot to go right, but it is the only genuine price discrepancy among the runners with a real chance.

The tips card has Proxima Dea as the win play, with Icelady and Quick Finish as no bets. Read that as: most likely winner at a fair price, and the two forward runners are too short for what we make them.

Punty Says

  • Most likely winner: #1 Proxima Dea (39.1%, fair $2.55)
  • Danger: #4 De Armas (23.9%, fair $4.18)
  • Big-price bastard we don't want knocking us out: #15 Tharwa (3.1%, fair $32.05)

A positive edge is not automatically a bet. Punty's actual bets come from the tips card.

How Punty Gets There

Proxima Dea first. We make her 39.1%, so the fair price is $2.55. The market's $2.56, which strips back to a market chance of 34.1% once the bookies' margin of 114.5% is removed. The edge is +0.4%, which is basically nothing. She is top of our list on form, on the quality of the Group 1 she just won, and on a record that has her winning on every track type she has tried. The draw and the extra 500m are what keep her chance well short of dominant.

The value runner is Tharwa. We make her 3.1%, a fair price of $32.05, and the market is paying $36.00, an edge of +12.3%. That is value by the numbers and still a long shot. A value runner is not a likely winner. She is a horse the market may be underrating by a modest amount, and we would only call her value at $36.90 or better.

De Armas is the opposite. We make her 23.9%, a fair price of $4.18, and she is $3.15 in the market, an edge of -24.6%. Good filly, and she is rated second in our numbers, but she is under the odds.

How This Thing Probably Unfolds

Quick Finish is the only true leader on our map. She was in front early when she won at Caulfield over 2000m, and she gets there from barrier 5 without much fuss. The pressure comes from Icelady (barrier 4) and Waiheke Rose (barrier 6), both on pace, and either could take a sit off her. In a 2500m Oaks with three runners keen to be handy, we expect a moderate tempo rather than a real burn, with Icelady getting the cushiest run of anyone on our map.

That suits the forward runners and mildly hurts the backmarkers. The back half is a big group. Fourteen runners are listed at the back, and six of them are drawn wide: Proxima Dea (barrier 19), Joely (barrier 18), Tharwa (barrier 17), Nikitria (barrier 16), Notified (barrier 15) and Courting (barrier 20). Proxima Dea is midfield on our map, but from 19 it is a question of whether Zac Lloyd can slot in without burning petrol early or going three wide round the first bend. If the speed is soft and they roll along, the leaders get a bit of an easy time and the wide horses have to do their work late.

De Armas is in barrier 1 and midfield on our map. That is a handy spot for a filly that has hung out under pressure at her last three starts, because the inside rail gives her something to lean on. The late-running tail has a bigger job. A genuine mid-race burst would help them, but nothing on the map points to one.

The Race Has Seen Some Shit

The Oaks is run at Flemington over 2500m for three-year-old fillies at set weights. It has been a Group 1 since 1979. Briseis won the 1876 Victoria Derby and then the Oaks in the same week, which is the sort of thing that makes everyone since look lazy.

Favourites have been reliable lately. Favourites won four runnings in a row from 2021 to 2024, and 4 of the last 10 winners started favourite (n=10), which is a pub stat rather than anything solid. The price pattern is stronger in shape: 9 of the last 10 winners started short, and the exception was Lasqueti Spirit, a triple-figure roughie in 2016. That is labelled INTERESTING, and the mechanism is plausible. Set weights over a trip few fillies have tried tend to reward the best-performed filly, and the market usually finds her. It is a small sample of ten.

The lead-up pattern is the interesting one. 7 of the last 10 winners came out of the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington five days earlier, and all seven ran first or second there, with four of them winning it (n=10). Labelled INTERESTING, not strong, because we don't know what share of Oaks runners come that way. Damien Oliver rode three straight winners, Miami Bound (2019), Personal (2020) and Willowy (2021), and across the last ten years Oliver rode 3 winners, Damian Lane 2 and James Cummings trained 2 (n=10). Those are pub stats.

On draws, the 2024 and 2025 winners came from barriers 12 and 13, after winners from barriers 1, 2 and 5 in 2021 to 2023 (n=10). Strictly Business won from barrier 13 in 2025 in a time of 2:36.50, the fastest of the ten winners from 2016 to 2025. Last year's field was smaller than this one, and no barrier in the recent winners list comes close to 19.

Full race history →

What Does Any of That Mean This Year?

Start with the price pattern. Proxima Dea at $2.56 and De Armas at $3.15 sit comfortably inside the zone where winners usually come from. Icelady at $9.20 is just outside the zone. Tharwa, at $36.00, is the sort of price that has produced one winner in ten runnings, and that was a 100 to 1 shot in 2016. Our numbers like her a bit more than the market does, but the history tells you not to confuse a value call with a probable winner.

The Wakeful pattern is tricky to apply, because 17 runners contested a Group 2 over 2000m at Flemington on 31 October and the pattern says winners came from the first two home. Only De Armas, who won, fits that. Icelady was third. Proxima Dea did not run there, she was at Randwick, so on the pattern alone she would be a bit of an outlier. That is an INTERESTING label on n=10, and our numbers have not marked her down heavily for it, because a Group 1 win by 1.5 lengths a fortnight ago is the sort of form that can substitute for a lead-up run.

On favourites, the last four years of the favourite winning is the kind of thing hindsight merchants will quote on Friday. Four from ten (n=10) is a pub stat, and the market's 34.1% for Proxima Dea is the thing to compare it to.

On the draw, recent winners from barriers 12 and 13 tell you wide draws can win, but barrier 19 of 20 is a harder ask than 13 of 13 was in 2025. Our numbers do account for that, which is part of why she sits at 39.1% rather than higher.

The raw market adds up to 114.5%, not 100%: that extra is the bookmaker's margin. Market % is each runner's implied chance (1 / odds) with that margin removed, so it compares fairly with Punty %. Edge is market odds against Punty's fair odds.

We make her 39.1% and the market has her at $2.56, a fair price of $2.55 against that, so the edge is +0.4%. Most likely winner, and priced almost exactly right.

The record is five wins from five, and the Group 1 win at Randwick on 24 October over 2000m, by 1.5 lengths against eight others, is a bigger piece of form than anything else in this field. She won first-up and second-up, she has won at 1030m in a trial and 1800m in a Group 3, and she has won on three different track types. The sticking points are real. She has never run beyond 2000m, she has never raced at Flemington, and barrier 19 is the second-widest draw in the race. Zac Lloyd can ride her midfield from there, and that is where our map has her, but it may cost her ground.

If she runs the trip out, she wins often enough to be the most likely winner. If she doesn't, we will know in the last 400m. That is our read, and the 1 rank is about the numbers, not a promise.

Icelady has run a lot of good races without winning many. Seven starts for one win, four seconds and a third, and the Caulfield Group 1 second over 1600m was a big run. She was third in the Wakeful-type race over 2000m on 31 October, beaten 2.8 lengths, and she dropped 1kg to 56kg today, with De Armas carrying 56kg both times. That is a small point in her favour. Set weights mean nobody gets an edge, but she is now level on the scale with the one that beat her.

Our map likes her more than anyone's. She is on pace from barrier 4 and our map rates her as the best-helped runner in the race. If Quick Finish goes forward and Icelady sits one-off, she gets the run. The 2500m is the question, because she has not raced beyond 2000m and she hung in at times. We make her 9.5% against a market $9.20, a fair price of $10.53, and an edge of -12.6%. That is on the wrong side of fair, so a chance but not value.

Quick Finish is the only horse in the field to have raced 2500m at Flemington, and she ran third in a Group 1, 3.2 lengths behind the winner, on 31 October. Three wins from five starts with a Group 3 win over 2000m at Caulfield, leading all the way, tells you what she does: she gets in front and tries to stay there.

She is the only leader on our map, so she gets to roll along at her own tempo from barrier 5. That is a good thing. But we make her 4.8%, a fair price of $20.70, and the market has her at $15.50, an edge of -25.1%. She is a rough chance and the market is being generous to her, perhaps on the back of that Group 1 third. The McEvoys have three runners, Quick Finish, Expensive Taste and Courting, and the stable's last 100 runners have struck less often than their prices suggest, though 100 runners is a thin sample.

De Armas is the danger. She won the Group 2 over 2000m at Flemington on 31 October, settling back and finishing home by 1.2 lengths, and the Wakeful-type lead-up has been the strongest route to the Oaks in recent years (INTERESTING, n=10). James McDonald takes over from Blake Shinn, and she is drawn barrier 1.

But we make her 23.9% and the market has her at $3.15. Our fair price is $4.18, which puts the edge at -24.6%. She is a strong chance and under the odds, and there is nothing contradictory about that. She raced greenly and hung out on straightening last start, and she hung in or out in two of her previous three. Barrier 1 helps her with the rail, but over 2500m she is getting very tired in a fifth start in six weeks. We make her a genuine runner, but that price is too short. We would want $4.90.

Waller has three runners in this race, De Armas, Your Colour and Tharwa, and this is the best of them on form.

We make her 1.7%, a fair price of $58.82, against a market $67.00, an edge of +13.9%. There is a small overlay but she needs everything to go right.

Quynh won a Bendigo maiden over 1600m on 17 October then ran tenth in the Group 2 at Flemington on 31 October, beaten 7.3 lengths. A jump to a Group 1 over 2500m is a big ask. Barrier 3 is the best thing about her, and no jockey is listed yet. We make her 0.9%, a fair price of $111.11, against a market $101.00, an edge of -9.1%.

Little Ally Bama won a Horsham maiden by a nose over 2100m and has not run in anything like this class. A drop in the pool to a Group 1 is a big jump. Linda Meech rides from barrier 2, and a slow-away or held-up run is common. We make her 0.7%, a fair price of $135.14, against a market $91.00, an edge of -32.7%.

The 2100m was her longest trip.

Chocolate Freckles was second at Mornington over 1500m, slowly away and held up, beaten 0.4 lengths. She has run three times and has not been beyond 1500m. We make her 0.7%, a fair price of $140.85, against a market $151.00, an edge of +7.2%, a small overlay on a very long price. From the big step up to Group 1 level this is a plain trip into the unknown.

If the Track Changes

Good 4 with showers around and the rail out 6m for the entire circuit. Rain on a Good track is a mild variable, not a big one. Proxima Dea has won on Good (three from three), Soft (one from one) and Heavy (one from one), so she is the runner least affected. Icelady has been in the money on Soft without winning (three seconds from four starts). De Armas is a winner on Good and Heavy but has not won in four tries on Soft, though that is a small sample.

Punty's Final Word

1. #1 Proxima Dea

Most likely winner, and priced about right at $2.56 against our $2.55. The draw and the trip are the whole story.

2. #4 De Armas

The danger, but under the odds. We would want $4.90 before she is value.

3. #15 Tharwa

The roughie. $36.00 against our $32.05, an edge of +12.3%, but she needs a lot to go right.

4. #2 Icelady

Gets the best run on our map, but at $9.20 the market has her about right.

Questions

What distance is the Crown Oaks?

The Crown Oaks is run over 2500m at Flemington for three-year-old fillies at set weights. This year's race is on 5 November 2026 with a field of 20.

Who is the favourite for the 2026 Crown Oaks?

Proxima Dea is the market favourite at $2.56. We make her 39.1%, a fair price of $2.55, so the market has her about right.

Does barrier 19 matter in the Oaks?

Recent winners have come from barriers 12 and 13 in the last two years, so a wide draw is not fatal. But barrier 19 of 20 is a harder ask, and Proxima Dea needs to be ridden midfield without losing too much ground.

Which horse is the value runner in the Crown Oaks?

Our numbers have Tharwa as the value runner. We make her 3.1%, a fair price of $32.05, against a market $36.00, an edge of +12.3%. Value is not the same as likely, and she is a long shot.

Does the Wakeful Stakes matter for the Oaks?

7 of the last 10 winners came from the Wakeful Stakes five days earlier, and all seven ran first or second there (n=10, INTERESTING). This year De Armas fits the profile, and Proxima Dea does not.
