The Race
The race began in 1863 as the Ascot Vale Stakes for two-year-olds, and the first winner was Freestone.
It was first run as a three-year-old race on Saturday 13 September 1969, and Ascot Vale Stakes remains its registered name.
The race became Group 1 in 2006, after being Group 2 from 1979 to 2005.
Since 2006 it has been run on Victoria Derby day; from 1969 to 2005 it was held in September.
Of the 13 colts to win since the race became Group 1 in 2006, 11 went on to stud careers (as at October 2025).
Sepoy, the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper winner, won the Coolmore as the last of his 10 career wins.
Tentyris won in 1:08.10 in 2025, the fastest time among the ten winners from 2016 to 2025.
Six winners came through the Group 2 Roman Consul in the race's first 19 Group 1 editions, including Zoustar, Brazen Beau and Switzerland.

Patterns, Rated
- Interesting James McDonald rode 3 of the last 10 winners (2021, 2022, 2024) and Chris Waller trained 3 (2020, 2021, 2024) (n=10, 3 of 10)
- Interesting 8 of the last 10 winners started at $10 or shorter (n=10, 8 of 10)
- Pub stat 3 of the last 10 winners started favourite (2020, 2022, 2025) (n=10, 3 of 10)
- Interesting OLBG counts 5 of the last 10 winners as having run at Rosehill last start, three of them in the Golden Rose (2017, 2019, 2022) (n=10, 5 of 10)
- Pub stat 5 of the last 10 winners drew barrier 9 or wider (n=10, 5 of 10)
- Pub stat Mark Zahra won it twice, eight years apart (Merchant Navy 2017, Tentyris 2025) (n=10, 2 of 10)
Strong signal: enough runnings and a racing reason behind it. Interesting: worth knowing, not worth betting on alone. Pub stat: fun at the bar, useless at the window.
