Fourteen three-year-olds, $2 million, 1200m, and a favourite drawn barrier 14 who has to come from the back. Nobody said Derby day would be relaxing.
The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a $2 million Group 1 for three-year-olds over 1200m at Flemington, set weights, and this year's edition has a clear top of the market and a messy middle. The Next Episode is our most likely winner. We make him 22.5%, a fair price of $4.44, and the market has him at $4.00. That's an edge of -9.9%, so the bookies are a touch short of where we'd want them. Most likely winner and best value are different questions, and this race is a good example. The Next Episode is the first, Satono Glow is closer to the second.
Satono Glow is the danger. We make him 19.5% against a market price of $5.70, so there's a bit of margin in his favour, an edge of +11.3%. Four from five, a Group 2 at Rosehill last start, two from two at Flemington. He's drawn barrier 4 but settles back, so he needs a proper tempo.
That tempo is the whole puzzle. Three horses map to lead (Paradoxium, Natural Fling and Pembrey), the two fastest-away backmarkers are drawn wide, and showers are forecast on a Good 4 track. The roughie is Doubt Time, rated at 6.7% by us against a market price of $20.00. He's a long way from being the likely winner, but the price is bigger than we think it should be.
The market is framed at 107.4%, so every price in the field carries a bookmaker margin. Our fair prices don't. Keep that in mind when you see a horse that looks 'about right' in the market. Often it's a bit short.

Most likely winner: #1 The Next Episode (22.5%, fair $4.44)
Danger: #13 Satono Glow (19.5%, fair $5.12)
Big-price bastard we don't want knocking us out: #11 Doubt Time (6.7%, fair $14.97)
A positive edge is not automatically a bet. Punty's actual bets come from the tips card.
How Punty Gets There
Start at the top. We make The Next Episode 22.5%, which converts to a fair price of $4.44. The market's $4.00, which with the bookmaker margin removed is a chance of 23.3%. So the market and my numbers are close to agreeing on how good he is, but the price is a little shorter than ours, an edge of -9.9%. The price at which we'd call him value is $5.20. That's a small gap, not a disaster. He's our most likely winner, and the gap between 'most likely' and 'value' is about two things: the market has found him too, and his price is a touch tight because of that.
The value side of the ledger belongs to others. Satono Glow is rated 19.5% by us, a fair price of $5.12, against the market's $5.70. The edge is +11.3%. He's rated second in the field by us (2 of 14). Doubt Time is rated 6.7% by us, fair $14.97, and the market has him at $20.00, an edge of +33.6%. It's a big edge on a small chance, and a small chance still loses most of the time. Fourteen runners and a result that can go anywhere: calibration says to expect misses, and that's not a flaw.
How This Thing Probably Unfolds
Three horses want the front. Paradoxium (barrier 13), Natural Fling (barrier 8) and Pembrey (barrier 9) all map to lead, and Paradoxium has to work across from the outside to get there. Contested leads at 1200m tend to produce a solid tempo and a tired leader late, and my map rates all three leaders as hurt by the shape of this race.
The ones who get the best of it are the on-pace runners just behind. St Gotthard (barrier 6) and Stretan Ruler (barrier 5) map to sit handy, and my map rates their run as the best in the race. They can sit off the speed, get a trail, and still be within striking range. That's good for St Gotthard, who's our third-ranked runner, and a lot less relevant for Stretan Ruler, who is at the bottom of our ratings.
The back-half is where it gets tricky. The Next Episode (barrier 14), Doubt Time (barrier 12) and Alibaba (barrier 11) are all drawn wide and ride from midfield or back, so they need cover or luck. Mbube and Satono Glow also map to settle at the back. That's four runners settling at the back, which only works if the leaders really do go hard. If the speed collapses into a muddle and the tempo drops, those backmarkers get a lot harder to win with, and the on-pace horses get a gift.
Showers on a Good 4 track add a wrinkle. A track that gets a bit softer tends to blunt late sprints and suit horses who handle the wet. Nothing here is certain.

The Race Has Seen Some Shit
The Coolmore Stud Stakes started in 1863 as the Ascot Vale Stakes for two-year-olds, and the first winner was Freestone. It switched to three-year-olds on 13 September 1969, and Ascot Vale Stakes remains its registered name. It was Group 2 from 1979 to 2005 and became Group 1 in 2006. Since 2006 it has run on Victoria Derby day, having been held in September before that.
For a breeder's race, it does its job. Of the 13 colts to win since it became Group 1, 11 went on to stud careers (as at October 2025). Sepoy, a Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper winner, won the Coolmore as the last of his 10 career wins. Tentyris won in 1:08.10 in 2025, the fastest time of the ten winners from 2016 to 2025.
The trends are worth a look, with their labels. James McDonald rode 3 of the last 10 winners (2021, 2022 and 2024) and Chris Waller trained 3 (2020, 2021 and 2024), n=10, count=3, an INTERESTING pattern. The mechanism is plain: Waller has the deepest Sydney three-year-old team and McDonald rides most of its best horses. It's a small sample and could be noise, but the mechanism is real.
The INTERESTING label also sits on the market pattern: 8 of the last 10 winners started at single-figure odds, n=10, count=8. Set weights at 1200m leave little room for a horse to beat superior class. Only 3 of the last 10 winners were favourites (2020, 2022 and 2025), n=10, a PUB STAT, so favourites aren't the safe bet, but winners tend to come from near the top of the market.
Five of the last 10 winners ran at Rosehill last start, three of them in the Golden Rose (2017, 2019 and 2022), n=10, count=5, INTERESTING. The Golden Rose and Roman Consul at Rosehill are the main Sydney spring races for three-year-old sprinters. Six winners came through the Group 2 Roman Consul in the first 19 Group 1 editions, including Zoustar, Brazen Beau and Switzerland.
On barriers, 5 of the last 10 winners drew barrier 9 or wider, n=10, count=5, a PUB STAT. Merchant Navy won from barrier 15 in 2017, Home Affairs from barrier 13 in 2021, and September Run from barrier 12 in 2020. Mark Zahra won it twice, eight years apart, with Merchant Navy in 2017 and Tentyris in 2025, n=10, count=2, a PUB STAT.
The market pattern lines up neatly with the top four in this year's market. The Next Episode, St Gotthard, Satono Glow and Natural Fling are all single-figure quotes, which fits the single-figure winner trend. It's a sample of ten, so it narrows the field without proving anything. Our top four by rating are those same four, and the pattern and my numbers are saying the same thing.
The Waller and McDonald trend points at St Gotthard, a Waller runner with McDonald riding. Waller has two runners (No.5 St Gotthard and No.8 Steel Will), and only one of them has the rider. St Gotthard maps to sit handy, which is the best part of this shape. But the market has already priced him: we make him 14.1% for a fair price of $7.10, and the market's $4.80. The trend is a fair reason for his short price, and the price is why we'd want $8.20 before calling it value.
The Rosehill pattern touches a few runners, with the Group 2 at Rosehill on 10 October the key piece of form. Satono Glow won it, Steel Will ran second and Paradoxium fourth. The Next Episode took his lead-up at Flemington instead, which doesn't fit the Rosehill pattern but is hardly a negative given he won a Group 2 there. The 'came through Rosehill' trend is five from ten, so it's not a rule.
Barrier 14 for the most likely winner is the big question. Five of the last 10 winners came from barrier 9 or wider, and Merchant Navy won from barrier 15. So a wide draw hasn't been a death sentence. But it's a PUB STAT with n=10, and a back-marker drawn 14 still needs the race to run to suit. My numbers already account for the draw, so the 22.5% is after the barrier penalty, not before it.

The raw market adds up to 107.4%, not 100%: that extra is the bookmaker's margin. Market % is each runner's implied chance (1 / odds) with that margin removed, so it compares fairly with Punty %. Edge is market odds against Punty's fair odds.

Profile: Back · Wet-track winner · First up from a spell, second-up now
The Next Episode has won 4 of 6 and the last three runs read 1, 1, 1, though two of those were barrier trials, so the real record is shorter than the form line looks. His last start was a Group 2 at Flemington over 1100m in the wet, won by 0.3 of a length with interference at the start and settling 10th of 11. That's a horse who won from last, and it's a good sign for a runner who has to come from barrier 14. Natural Fling was second in that race, so the form is directly relevant today.
There are questions. He has no run at 1200m in his listed form, so this is the longest trip he's tried. The stallion chain comes off for the first time, which is a gear change and a mild unknown. He has 1 start on a Good track and no win there, and showers may help. The wide draw matters too: he'll be a long way back and needs cover.
We make him 22.5% and fair at $4.44, ranked 1 of 14. The market's $4.00, so he's slightly short of our fair price, an edge of -9.9%. Most likely winner, yes. A lot of the value is already taken by the market.
Paradoxium won a Group 3 at Flemington over 1100m leading from barrier 3, and was fourth in the Group 2 at Rosehill last start, a run where he was keen. He has to cross from barrier 13 to get the front, which uses energy, and my map rates him as the leader most hurt by the shape. He's 3 from 7, 3 from 5 on a good track, and 0 from 2 on soft. We make him 4.5%, fair at $22.08, ranked 8, and the market has him at $19.00, an edge of -13.9%. A bit short for a horse fighting for a contested lead.

Alibaba was fourth in the Flemington Group 2 at long odds, and he's been through Group 1s at Caulfield and Randwick without troubling the judges. One win from 6, and the ratings say he needs everything. From barrier 11 he'll have to find cover. We make him 1.8%, fair at $56.82, ranked 12, against a market of $61.00. Our edge on paper is +7.4%, but it's a small chance at a big price.
Profile: On pace · Group 2 winner earlier · Back-up from 13 days
Stretan Ruler won a Group 2 at Rosehill in February and was fourth in the Group 3 at Caulfield over 1200m last start. He was 11th in the Flemington Group 2 before that. My map rates his run as one of the best in the race, but that's the only box ticked, and we rate him last in the field. We make him 1.1%, fair at $94.34, ranked 14, with a market of $126.00. The edge of +33.6% looks big, but it's on a chance so small that it's more rounding than opinion.

Profile: On pace · Blinkers first time · Waller and McDonald
St Gotthard has a good map. He sits on-pace from barrier 6, behind three horses that will fight for the lead, and my map rates his run as one of the best in the race. Two wins and two seconds from 4 starts, 3 at 1200m or further. His Group 1 second at Rosehill over 1400m came after being severely hampered near 800m, which is a legitimate excuse.
The flags: blinkers go on first time, which can sharpen a horse or make it too keen. His last run was a barrier trial where he finished fifth, which is nothing. And the market has picked him up. We make him 14.1%, fair at $7.10, ranked 3, against a market price of $4.80. That's an edge of -32.4%, the biggest negative in the field. Good horse, short price. We'd need $8.20 to get interested. Waller has 2 runners (No.5 and No.8), and James McDonald rides this one.

Marffiano won the Group 3 at Caulfield over 1200m last start, a head-bob after the plate came off at the barriers, and a win at big odds that shows he has some ability. He's 2 for 2 first-up but this is a quick back-up after 13 days. From barrier 3, he can find a spot. We make him 1.8%, a fair price of $55.87, ranked 11, with the market at $67.00. Needs a lot of luck to win a Group 1.

Under Focus has finished third in his last two, including a Group 1 at Rosehill over 1400m, though he laid in in the straight in both runs. Barrier 1 and a midfield map is workable if the leaders go hard. Blake Shinn takes the ride, and he comes off a 34-day break, the longest in the field. We make him 5.0%, fair at $20.08, ranked 7, with a market price of $20.00. Priced very close to fair. A place hand rather than a winner on my numbers.

Steel Will was beaten 1.3 lengths by Satono Glow in the Rosehill Group 2, after striking interference at the start and being keen, so the form has a line through today's danger. He's Waller's second runner (No.8, alongside No.5 St Gotthard). Barrier 10 and a midfield map is fine. We make him 2.4%, fair at $41.32, ranked 10, against a market of $41.00. Priced about right for an exotics runner.
Mbube has had just 3 starts, winning once and finishing second and third, and the third was in the Group 2 at Flemington, held up near the 400m. Unexposed, but he has to settle at the back and the strike rate for backmarkers rises only if the pace is hot. We make him 2.6%, a fair price of $38.02, ranked 9, with the market at $32.00. Profile: Back · Blinkers first time · Group 3 third
Doubt Time is our roughie. He was third in a Group 3 at Caulfield over 1200m last start, beaten 0.5 of a length, after being slowly away and settling 11th, and that's a good run with a hard-luck story. Before that he was fifth in the Group 2 at Flemington, again slowly away, so there's a pattern of giving away ground early. Blinkers go on first time, which might help him start better. We can't tell yet whether they'll make a difference, and 3 career starts isn't much to work from.
Barrier 12 and a back-marker's map is a real negative. He needs the pace to collapse, and with three leaders there's a decent chance of that. We make him 6.7%, fair at $14.97, ranked 6 of 14, against a market of $20.00, an edge of +33.6%. That's a big edge on a small chance. It's value, but he still loses most of the time.

Natural Fling went within 0.3 of a length of The Next Episode in the Group 2 at Flemington, from barrier 10, sitting second. He's a Group 3 winner as well, with 5 starts yielding 2 wins, 2 seconds and a third, and my numbers rate his speed as the best in the race. Four of his starts have been on soft ground, with 2 wins, so a damp track is a plus.
The problem is the lead. Paradoxium and Pembrey also want it, and my map rates all three leaders as hurt by the way the race shapes. If he gets a soft lead he's dangerous, but three horses chasing one lead usually means somebody pays for it late. He's lightly weighted at 55kg under the set weights.
We make him 9.1%, fair at $11.01, ranked 4, against a market of $9.80, an edge of -11.0%. The price is a bit short for a leader in a contested lead, and the Group 1 grade is a step up from what he's beaten.

Satono Glow is the danger, and he's the horse our numbers like most when you put the price next to the rating. Four wins from five starts, and two of those wins are Group level: a Group 3 at Flemington over 1100m from barrier 13 where he was slowly away, and a Group 2 at Rosehill over 1200m last start, winning by 1.3 lengths. That Rosehill win is the one that counts, since it's the same distance and he beat Steel Will, who runs today, and ran clear of Paradoxium and The Machine Gun.
He's drawn barrier 4, which is a real advantage over the other back-markers, though he still settles at the back, so he'll be relying on the leaders going hard. He carries 55kg, which in a set-weights race is just what the conditions give. Flemington has been kind: 2 starts, 2 wins. He's also 2 for 2 first-up and 2 for 2 second-up.
We make him 19.5%, fair at $5.12, ranked 2 of 14. The market's $5.70, an edge of +11.3%. It's a positive edge with a decent chance behind it, which is rarer than people think. Value and likely are different, and he's closer to the first.

Pembrey won a Group 2 at Randwick over 1200m, leading from barrier 9, and he's 2 from 5 at the distance. A sixth at Randwick last time was raced flat with a poor recovery, and a 14th in the Group 1 Golden Slipper over 1200m earlier shows the top level has found him out. Two wins from 2 first-up starts, 0 from 2 second-up. Another leader in a contested lead, which is a negative. We make him 7.4%, a fair price of $13.51, ranked 5 of 14, against $13.50 in the market. If the Track Changes
Showers are forecast and the track is Good 4, with the true entire circuit rail. If the rain arrives, the surface could soften and that changes who's well placed. The Next Episode has won 2 of 3 on soft and 2 of 2 on heavy, but has 1 start on a Good track without a win, so a bit of cut in the ground would suit. Paradoxium is the other way, winning 3 from 5 on good but 0 from 2 on soft. Natural Fling has done most of his work on soft (4 starts, 2 wins), and Pembrey is 2 from 4 on soft. A change in the track hasn't been priced into the market yet, and we don't know how much rain falls.
Punty's Final Word
1. #1 The Next Episode
Most likely winner at 22.5%, though the market's $4.00 sits a touch below our fair $4.44, and value starts at $5.20.
2. #13 Satono Glow
The danger, rated 19.5% by us against a market price of $5.70, so there's an edge of +11.3% on a genuine chance.
3. #11 Doubt Time
The roughie. Barrier 12 and blinkers first time, but the price $20.00 is bigger than our fair $14.97.
4. #5 St Gotthard
Good map, good rider, short price. We'd want $8.20 before calling it value.

The Next Episode is the market leader at $4.00, and our most likely winner at 22.5%. The market's a touch shorter than our fair price of $4.44. Satono Glow ($5.70) and St Gotthard ($4.80) are next in the market.
Does barrier matter in the Coolmore Stud Stakes?
A wide draw hasn't been fatal. 5 of the last 10 winners drew barrier 9 or wider, n=10, a PUB STAT, so a small sample. The Next Episode is drawn barrier 14 and our price already allows for it.
Who has the best recent record in the race?
James McDonald rode 3 of the last 10 winners and Chris Waller trained 3, n=10, an INTERESTING pattern but a small sample. McDonald rides St Gotthard for Waller today.
