Rightio Loose Units, Ballarat Synthetic on a wintry, sneaky-with-the-closers night, rail jammed in the whole circuit. It's the sort of meeting where you can do everything right for 800m, then some bloke in the outside lane casually strolls past you like it's a scene change in a slow Aussie thriller. Late shower risk is real, but the wind's helping them keep sprinting, so the race shape matters a heap.

My spine today is pretty clean. Race 3 Stuntman is a proper "go button" type, Race 1 Back Up Barbie is the one with the finish, and Race 4 Saludar is the easy tempo, hard-to-kill machine. From there, it's about being brave enough to play value when the market gets a bit dramatic, especially in the Quaddies where you need at least one legit punch in the dividends.

And yeah, I can already hear the "I only played winners" crowd getting sporty after the day turns into a place-fest. On this surface, with rain flirting, place getters are the ones that keep your wallet alive while the chaos does its thing. Big picture, I'm leaning into the on-speed stuff and the runners who look like they can keep a longer sprint when the straight starts to play mind games.

What it means for you: You've got three races you can build a day around, Race 1, Race 3 and Race 4. For those, I'm backing them to be in the fight early, not bolting late from the stratosphere. If you're playing smaller, stick to the Win plays on the confident ones and use Place where it's safer and still worth a squiz.

For the chaos lanes, we're not going full theme park. Race 5 is open, so we're using an Each Way anchor in Swycho and then just protecting with the right runners in the multileg races. Races 6 and 7 are trickier tempo-wise, so you'll see me keep the stakes tight on the key selections, then let the exotics do the heavy lifting if you're still feeling brave after you've banked your base.

Good luck, bankroll management, and keep your tickets away from the heater. Last thing you want is a soggy slip and a sad face.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Stuntman (Race 3, No.6) — $2.02
Why Maps midfield with the sort of run-on that synthetic sprints love, and the stable looks geared for it.

2 - Back Up Barbie (Race 1, No.3) — $2.78
Why On pace with the resuming glow, plus she's the one that can still be sprinting when the field realises it's late.

3 - Saludar (Race 4, No.8) — $2.41
Why The tempo suits, she's strong on the speed side, and she's got that "hit the line and keep going" profile.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~$14 = ~$140 collect

Race 1 – Mdns, Middle Priority, Big Finish Energy

Race type: Maiden Plate, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, with Deputy John Stone and What Once Was pressing forward, then the rest closing in a wave.

Punty read: This is a sprint where you don't need a miracle, you need a decent position and the ability to keep kicking past the last 200m. Back Up Barbie is sitting in that "on pace, resumes well, finishes too" sweet spot, and she's the one I want on a synthetic night where the leaders don't always get the job done. Prince Of Portland's the other danger, coming in around the right tempo and usually running into the finishers' business.

Deputy John Stone is the roughie because he's got the leader itch and can give you that roughie win when the pace chops up earlier than everyone expects. And for anyone thinking Roja Caliente is just there as a headline price, she's a proper watchlist runner with gear first time, but I'm not forcing a ticket on her at this stage.

Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)

1. Back Up Barbie (No.3) — $2.78 / $1.82
Bet $20.00 Win, return $55.60
Prob 25.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.12x
Why On pace with resuming form that actually looks like it translates to this track type, she should be in the fight turning for home.

2. Prince Of Portland (No.6) — $3.60 / $1.65
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.60
Prob 17.5% | Place: 56.1% | Value: 0.65x
Why Steady into the race, can settle closer than some, and on synthetic sprint days, a clean run is half the job.

3. Roja Caliente (No.11) — $3.80 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 51.3% | Value: 0.84x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.

Roughie: Deputy John Stone (No.1) — $11.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.20x
Why The bankroll's on the top of the card today — he makes the shortlist, not the betting slip.

Race 2 – Mdns, Blinkers, Chaos on the Menu

Race type: Maiden Plate, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Catonahotinroof and Kung Fu Panda floating mid, with a no-drama run at them and a finish late.

Punty read: This is a maiden where the winners usually show you something simple, position and grind. Catonahotinroof is my main play, because resuming with blinkers first time and stable intent screams "go again, find more". Sumaluv's a live one too, but she's the sort of runner who can overdo it if the pace isn't right, hence I keep her ticket as Place.

Gun City is the one I'm respecting but not backing, because at the current price, he's more likely to be a problem in trifectas than a simple place saver. Bellitsy is a roughie type too, can run on, but this feels like a Catonahotinroof vs the rail for your attention race.

Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)

1. Catonahotinroof (No.2) — $3.32 / $2.15
Bet $20.00 Win, return $66.40
Prob 22.1% | Place: 61.9% | Value: 1.14x
Why Blinkers and the trial plus resume set-up, she should be finding the line without needing a miracle run.

2. Sumaluv (No.5) — $3.07 / $2.00
Bet $4.00 Place, return $8.00
Prob 17.1% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.04x
Why Gets into it late if she finds the right lane, and 1200m on synthetic can reward the patient rider.

3. Gun City (No.7) — $3.32 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 46.9% | Value: 0.79x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.

Roughie: Bellitsy (No.1) — $11.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.4% | Place: 19.1% | Value: 0.66x
Why The bankroll's on the top of the card today — he makes the shortlist, not the betting slip.

Race 3 – Stuntman and the Run-On Brigade

Race type: Maiden Plate, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, with Rich King and Stuntman tracking into the speed, then the finishers start their work.

Punty read: 1400m on synthetic is where a good horse is allowed to make a judgement call. Stuntman is the one I trust most to do it, he's the clear "win early, stay close, hit the line strong" sort. Rich King is also dangerous but you can see the way this map is built to favour a runner who can keep rolling, not just sprint to 200m out.

Aurum Star is a no-bet for me because he's priced like a threat already, and if he misses, he tends to miss in a way that doesn't pay you back for being clever. Laurel Bay is the roughie because the price is there if the market's wrong and she happens to time her run perfectly.

Top 3 + Roughie ($21.00 pool)

1. Stuntman (No.6) — $2.02 / $1.45
Bet $17.00 Win, return $34.34
Prob 32.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.03x
Why He's built for this sort of tempo, midfield position, and that kick that synthetic rewards.

2. Rich King (No.5) — $2.12 / $1.52
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.08
Prob 24.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.94x
Why On the pace side and should get every chance to run top-three, even if the winner is someone else.

3. Aurum Star (No.10) — $2.67 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.98x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.

Roughie: Laurel Bay (No.9) — $23.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.3% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 1.37x
Why The bankroll's on the top of the card today — he makes the shortlist, not the betting slip.

Race 4 – Saludar Does the Job, Everyone Else Complains

Race type: BM62, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, with Impending War and Mr Butt's Boats around midfield, Saludar ready to pounce.

Punty read: BM1400 on synthetic is a tactical bogan ballet. Saludar looks like she's got the right rhythm to keep being dangerous at the business end. Suze Spritz is the value-ish type if the track runs that way, she's the kind of runner who can pop into the top few and stick there.

Mr Butt's Boats is another on-speed contender, and Powerbound is a roughie that could run on when everyone else settles for third. Vagabond Hero is around the speed too, but the way the field reads, I'd rather lean into Saludar first and then spread coverage with the right runners in the quaddie.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)

1. Saludar (No.8) — $2.41 / $1.32
Bet $10.00 Win, return $24.10
Prob 28.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.77x
Why Tempo suits her, she's got that speed-side profile that holds up in synthetic sprints and longer sprints.

2. Suze Spritz (No.9) — $9.20 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.31x
Why A real chance — but at $2.80 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.

3. Mr Butt's Boats (No.5) — $8.20 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 34.6% | Value: 1.16x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.

Roughie: Powerbound (No.2) — $9.15 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 25.2% | Value: 1.10x
Why The bankroll's on the top of the card today — he makes the shortlist, not the betting slip.

Race 5 – Swycho Each Way, the Rest Fight for Second Ticket

Race type: BM56, 1500m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace with a synthetic-style long run-in, where on-pace horses can still kick through the line.

Punty read: Open enough for the right sort of runner to get brave, and BM1500 on synthetic is where you want a horse that's been holding form together. Swycho is the anchor, he's on the speed side and the price still has enough room for him to do damage.

Pick Wisely is too low on value to take on as the main win play, so I'm leaving her out of the ticket. Lucky Compass is an each way price that looks tempting, but she's on the edge where place might be okay, win dividends might not. Weather Delay is the roughie path, because if the race sets up and he gets the right saving ground, he can sneak into the finish.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)

1. Swycho (No.5) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet $10.00 Each Way ($5.00W + $5.00P), return $30.00 (wins) / $11.25 (places)
Prob 14.0% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.26x
Why On pace, steady profile, and synthetic 1500s reward the runner who keeps finding a gear past the midway mark.

2. Pick Wisely (No.9) — $3.32 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.63x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.

3. Lucky Compass (No.14) — $8.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.6% | Place: 35.2% | Value: 1.34x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.

Roughie: Weather Delay (No.6) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 1.22x
Why The bankroll's on the top of the card today — he makes the shortlist, not the betting slip.

Race 6 – Margin Call, Straight to Court

Race type: BM62, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, leaders pushing, and this turns into a "who can keep sprinting" test, not a 1-2-3 stroll.

Punty read: This is the race where you're either on the speed or you're praying the gaps open. Margin Call should sit in the mix and not get bullied, and the way the race is set up, she should be there when the straight goes mean.

She's Buoyant is the place play, because she's close enough to be dangerous but the win price isn't doing much for me. Shah Jahan is the one I'm tracking but not paying for, while Pantoja is the roughie in case the pace falls apart and everyone realises too late that the run-on was always there.

Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)

1. Margin Call (No.3) — $4.65 / $1.90
Bet $14.00 Win, return $65.10
Prob 18.1% | Place: 54.5% | Value: 1.33x
Why Designed for this tempo, she should get the chance to keep rolling instead of sitting and fading.

2. She's Buoyant (No.12) — $4.05 / $1.72
Bet $5.00 Place, return $8.60
Prob 16.9% | Place: 51.7% | Value: 0.89x
Why Close enough to the action to run into the top three without needing a dream run.

3. Shah Jahan (No.10) — $5.00 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.90x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.

Roughie: Pantoja (No.7) — $9.40 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.6% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 1.15x
Why The bankroll's on the top of the card today — he makes the shortlist, not the betting slip.

Race 7 – Face The Wild, First Choice Chaos

Race type: BM56, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, on-speed presence, but this is still about who can carry speed through the pinch.

Punty read: This is sprint chaos with a proper favourite vibe, so I'm siding with Face The Wild to do the heavy lifting. She's got the profile to sit on or just off the speed and still be finishing when other horses hit the wall.

Starnova is a solid Place play, because she's the sort of on-speed runner who can hang around for the money even if she's not the one to win. Masked Marauder is respected but saved from a ticket at this stage, and El Salto is the roughie when the market underestimates the run.

Synthetic 1000s are unforgiving, you can be brave at 200m out and still get mugged in the last 50m. So get your right horse in the right spot early, then hang on.

Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)

1. Face The Wild (No.12) — $2.75 / $1.40
Bet $6.50 Win, return $17.88
Prob 18.2% | Place: 54.0% | Value: 0.66x
Why Cross-over nose band helps the focus, she should run her race close to the speed and not get swamped late.

2. Starnova (No.2) — $5.70 / $1.85
Bet $2.50 Place, return $4.62
Prob 14.9% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.14x
Why Resuming on speed can be perfect at 1000m, she should be around the top few when it matters.

3. Masked Marauder (No.1) — $7.95 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.1% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 1.26x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.

Roughie: El Salto (No.14) — $9.90 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.6% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 1.26x
Why The bankroll's on the top of the card today — he makes the shortlist, not the betting slip.

SEQUENCE LANES

QUADDIE (R4–R7)

Smart: 8,5,9,2 / 5,9,14,6 / 3,12,10,7 / 12,2,1,14 (256 combos x $0.12 = $32.00) -- 12% flexi

Punty's take: Three open legs and one "mid-favourite" leg, so it's spicy and entertainment-heavy. You're chasing the chaos correctly though, because the selections cover both win paths and the synthetic run-on types.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Synthetic 1000m, wind-assisted finishers
Light wind up the straight is basically telling closers, keep your laces tied, you might actually get there.

2 - First-up manners matter more than luck here
When runners come back with new gear, especially bits and blinkers, you'll see them settle cleaner. Cleaner settling at Ballarat Synthetic means you get to sprint twice.

3 - Market firming is usually telling a speed story
When the price firms hard on a leader-ish map profile (like your early leaders in Race 1 and the speed crews in Race 4), it usually means jockey intent and tempo are aligned. Follow that vibe.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

It's Ballarat Synthetic, so if you sit there and wait for the perfect price, the straight will slap you and laugh. Get on the ones that can keep sprinting, then let the chaos legs do the damage. Gamble Responsibly.
