Punty's take:

Belmont Park on Soft 5 is a bit like a wet concert floor, everyone thinks they can dance the same, then one guy hits the front at the right moment and suddenly it's a different show. The early races are where you'll see who can hold an honest enough roll without getting gobbled up in the kickback.

I'm eyeing the pace map first, because a slow tempo on a Soft track can turn into "run-off-the-feet" late, and that's where a horse with the right spot, plus a jockey who times the switch, burns the finish. From there, I'm leaning into the horses that have market support behind them for a reason, and I'm using the roughies where the race shape can genuinely allow a late swoop or a midpack grinding winner.

What it means for you:

If you're playing it simple, you want to be aggressive in the races where the leaders look like they can dictate, and you want place leverage where the map says the horse should be in the first half of the finish. Raw Umber has the best profile to take the sting out, and the excuses in the rest of the field are spicy enough to keep them from getting too carried away. Lucky Eighty Eight and Rocktex can land in the right spot if the tempo stays niggly, but they'll need something to go their way late. Kegs And Legs looks like a "blinkers first time" danger, but I'm not letting it knock Raw Umber off their spot.

Punty's take: This is the "short and sweet" one, but with this many legs it's basically a coin toss in suit and tie.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Slow pace on Soft makes the finish weird.
When the tempo is crawling, horses that can sit close and then keep pushing through the last 2 furlongs usually cash more often than the ones chasing a sprint illusion.

2 - Follow the firming moves around the straight.
When runners like Vienna Calling and Rainline get backed hard, it usually means the market sees a clean path home on a track where lanes matter a lot.

3 - Wet-track maiden chaos loves equipment changes.
You've got blinkers and tongue tie landings through the maiden races today, so if one of them jumps and settles, it can lift faster than a character in a reality show when the challenge card drops.
