This is one of those meetings where speed still matters, but if you're too keen too early you'll feel it in the last 100, like stepping on a plug in your undies. Expect closers to get their moment because Doomben's straight has a bit of tailwind help, and the showers can turn "fine" form into "fuck, why didn't I include him" form.

The vibe? Pace is there, but it's not the kind of pace where you can just lounge on the bunny and sail. With rain risk high, the Soft 5 turns races into a long survival test, especially over 1350 and 1200 where positioning at the bend can decide who gets a run at the line. If you're looking for value, I'm hunting runners whose map fits the track shape and whose market price doesn't scream "taken the money already".

My spine today is a clean Big 3, then I go race-by-race with Top 3 + one roughie per race, because Soft Doomben can absolutely embarrass a spreadsheet. Also, watch gear and market moves. Punty's take: Today's Doomben card is set up for "keep your feet on the footpaths" punting. Soft 5 with a long rail out means outside runs can still be gold, but you need the horse to keep finding under pressure. The wind helping closers is a massive tell, because once they straighten up, the straight becomes a bit of a chase lane for anyone who's not cooked. That's why I'm leaning into certain on-pace types that can sustain, plus a few value landmines that should run into the money.

Race 1 is a maiden plate but it feels like a proper learning curve race, with a bunch of horses coming off messy runs or first-time gear. When the track is soft and the pace is slow, those "held up" excuses turn into "nah, we're ready this time" chances. Race 2 has genuine pace and that usually turns maidens into a two or three horse chess match, then a wildcard that sneaks into third.

And across the back half, it's all about whether the map survives the wet. If a horse can sit close without being forced, they're the ones that get the reward. If they drift, or if they're stuck doing extra work, that's when you get the old "he ran on" but missed the line.

What it means for you: Be aggressive in the races where the track shape and gear changes line up, and take the place money when Win is overpriced. My Big 3 spine is built on runners that should be involved, not just "maybe they'll fluke a spot". The quaddies are there for fun, but if you're doing them, treat the wide legs like paying for a pub bet, you'll either laugh or swear.

Practically, I want you:

1. Back the main chances with confidence where the stakes say "get stuck in".
2. In the chaos races, keep it to the top end and protect with the place-side angles.
3. For roughies, only use them where the path to a win makes sense, like when the pace collapses or the track gives outside runners a kick.

The danger is backing someone too far forward and burning up in the mud, then watching the "always plugged away" horses hit the line late. I like Emphatique because she's the sort that gets into the race and keeps running, and Indamouse because those interference excuses are exactly the kind you bounce from when it's wet. If you're playing wider, St Andrews is the kind of horse that can surprise with first-time tongue tie and a cleaner getaway.

Punty read: This race has wheels. Zephyr Song is the type to go forward, so the rest of them need to either be ready to chase properly or they'll get chewed up by the first hard knock. Agadoo maps beautifully for Soft 5, and the blinkers going on are the kind of gear change that helps a horse settle and actually use the sprint when it arrives. Indigo Star is the other one I'm respecting, she's the right blend of class and racecraft. Bad Boss is the kind of runner that can be dangerous if the leaders set themselves up for him.

The danger is any slow-start type because with a soft track the kickback costs ground. Compel is a nice inclusion though, because blinkers first time and those early runs suggest she can get momentum.

Cryptic Beauty is the market favourite and can absolutely run, but the price suggests she's already had her moment. Erimar is the type to run on hard if the leaders don't do it easy, and Mimi's can be a late kicker if they go too fast.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Soft 5 and the rail out changes who gets a run.
Outside lanes can still land on the winner's circle if they can keep a steady engine into the straight, Doomben rail-out makes "fighting traffic" a real risk.

2 - Watch the drift horses for bounce signals.
When a horse eases hard in the betting but has the right map shape, it often means "too short to back" rather than "not good enough", and I like those types for place leverage.

3 - The wet in shorter races rewards efficiency, not bravery.
In 1110 and 1200, bravery that comes early gets you cooked late, but efficiency that arrives at the right time gets paid.
