Rightio Degenerates, Casino is a Heavy 8 with 52.4mm of rain in the last week, so this is a grinder of a card where stamina and a sharp first 200m matter more than the glamour names. Seven races, 65 runners, and the speed map is light in most of them, which means the front-runners will be getting a soft lead and the closers are going to have to earn every metre. Grab a coffee, get comfortable, and let's walk through it.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Casino, 1000m to 1900m card
Rail: True
Official going: Heavy 8 (0.4mm last 24hrs, 52.4mm last 7 days)
Weather: Overcast, gusts 9.3km/h, 70%+ chance of rain at 17:00, 20:00 and 23:00
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Races 1, 2 and 3 are Slow Pace with nobody mapping to lead or sit handy, so the first two off the gate will set the tone. Races 4 and 5 are Genuine Pace, each with one uncontested leader. Races 6 and 7 are Moderate Pace with a bunch of runners wanting the front.
Jockeys to follow:
Andrew Mallyon: Six rides today, including Valouri in Race 1 and Private Max in Race 3. His at-track strike rate on Valouri is 14.6% (815/5597), and Discreet Point in Race 5 is a ride worth watching.
Ben Looker: Six rides, and the one I want to see is Righteous in Race 1, where his at-track figure is 12.6% (1120/8875) and his combo with Ethan Ensby is 19.1% (9/47).
Violet Soulsby: Five rides, with Mahuika Maroi in Race 1 and Rainbow Lass in Race 6 the two to note. Rainbow Lass carries a 0/6 winning weight warning at 57-58kg, so that one is a bit of a puzzle.
Stables to respect:
M J Dunn (11 runners): The biggest set of runners on the card, with Valouri in Race 1 and Discreet Point in Race 5 both main chances. Valouri's trainer strike rate at track is 16.7% (1261/7565).
Stephen & Jordan Lee (10 runners): Three in Race 4 with Prestige Sotirio the pick, and they have runners in every race except Race 3.
Ethan Ensby (9 runners): Righteous and Mahuika Maroi in Race 1 keep this stable in the mix early, and they also have Limbazi in Race 3 and Airhawk in Race 7.

Punty's take: Here's the thing about today. Race 1 is the cleanest banker-ish race on the card, with Valouri the standout at $2.04, and he's not going to be running away from anyone because nobody wants the front. Race 2 and Race 3 look like slow, tactical affairs where the pace is going to be a bit of a crawl, and that is a race for a horse that can quicken from midfield. Private Max is my main man in Race 3, and Worthy Stunnah in Race 2 looks similar in shape. Race 4 is the one I'd treat with respect because Kobi Express is the lone leader, which sounds easy, but he's been dropped to a 0.73 map factor and Parting The Seas and Dellucy both get the trip they want. Race 5 is a Discreet Point race, plain and simple, with the shape helping him from the back. The mid-card in Race 6 and Race 7 is where the chaos lives, with Hot Wings and Sunset Trail the two I'm pinning on, and Airhawk is the horse the shape rewards most if the pace stays moderate.

What it means for you: Be aggressive on Valouri in Race 1 and Discreet Point in Race 5, they are the two I'd rather have the money on in this meeting. Protect yourself in Race 4 and Race 6 because those are the open races where a $5 to $10 winner could land and make the quaddie pay. Race 2 and Race 3 are mid-price tactical races with places more valuable than win, so keep the stake tight. The quaddie is a risky ticket with three open legs. Keep it as a bit of fun rather than the main game.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Private Max (Race 3, No.2) — $2.44
Why Shortest-priced of the three with the best form line on the card, the 2nd at Lismore 1220m last start, and Mallyon's the rider. He's drawn barrier 3 in a Slow Pace race where the shape is against him, but he's a horse that will be finishing with something in hand.
2 - Valouri (Race 1, No.3) — $2.04
Why The one I'd hang my hat on. Two runs at Grafton and Ipswich in the places, a fastest L600 and L400, and Mallyon on board. The shape is against him but he's the class edge in a race with nobody else wanting the lead.
3 - Discreet Point (Race 5, No.3) — $1.92
Why The Genuine Pace with a lone leader suits a back runner, and he's been running well over this trip with a 2nd at Ballina and a 4th at Eagle Farm last start. The price is short but the shape is his friend.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 9.56 = $95.60

Race 1 – Casino Beef Week Cup

Race type: Benchmark 58, 1900m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on paper, and nobody maps to lead or sit handy, so this is a race where the first few out will set a steady lead and the rest will be fighting for position. Valouri is drawn barrier 3 and will settle midfield, which is the shape working against him. Righteous from barrier 8 and Mahuika Maroi from barrier 6 are both in the drawn-wide group that needs cover, so they'll need a clean run to make a move late.
Punty read: Valouri at $2.04 is the bet, and the reason is simple: he's the one with the best closing sectionals on the card and a run at Ipswich that finished 2nd of 10 last start. The shape is against him and I'm not pretending otherwise, but the price reflects a horse who can win it anyway from midfield. Righteous is the danger from barrier 8 with a 3rd at Lismore in his recent run and Ben Looker on board, and Mahuika Maroi is the one from the back who needs the pace to fall apart. Caracoron has been an overlay on some signals, but he's been held up in his last few and the speed here is slow.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Valouri (No.3) — $2.04 / $1.20
Bet $15.00 Win, return $30.60
Prob 41.5% | Place: 59.5% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why Closing sectionals are the fastest on the card and he's been placed in his last two. Andrew Mallyon has 14.6% at track, and he's the class edge in a race with nothing else leading the way.
2. Righteous (No.2) — $5.70 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Mahuika Maroi (No.4) — $7.00 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.9% | Place: 32.9% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why Two wins from 13 starts at a bit of a price, and a heavy-track record of 0 wins from 3 starts that makes me nervous. Violet Soulsby riding and the pace needs to fall apart for her to run on.

Roughie: Piplup (No.8) — $26.00 / $5.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.2% | Place: 5.8% | Value: 0.57x Steady since tip
Why A wide-barrier runner at barrier 1 in a slow race, so the path is a clean run through midfield and a late charge if the front pair are tired. A roughie for the fun of it, not the wallet.

Race 2 – Tweedriverjockeyclub.Com.Au Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace again and no runner maps to lead or sit handy. Worthy Stunnah from barrier 3 settles midfield, which is working against him on the speed map. Anderlyn is a backmarker from barrier 5 and needs the field to come back to him, while Worththeadmission from barrier 1 sits at the back too. Nothing in this field is a natural lead, so the early tempo will be set by whoever has the nerve to go.
Punty read: Worthy Stunnah is the bet at $2.20. Winkers go on for the first time today, which is a tactical change worth noting, and his form line of 7423 has him finishing 3rd at Ipswich last start over 1350m. He gets a warning for the slow pace, but his sectionals show a fastest 400m time and a 2nd-ranked L400. No jockey is listed for him in the data, so I'm not making any rider call. Worththeadmission at $3.60 is the danger from the back, with Chris & Corey Munce running hot at track on 18% over the last 100. Anderlyn, with the value tick, is the one to watch if the pace collapses.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)

1. Worthy Stunnah (No.3) — $2.20 / $1.22
Bet $12.00 Win, return $26.40
Prob 33.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why Winkers on for the first time and a 3rd at Ipswich last start. The price is short but the form is the best on the card for a maiden of this shape.
2. Worththeadmission (No.8) — $3.60 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.4% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Anderlyn (No.4) — $5.20 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.0% | Place: 37.8% | Value: 1.04x Steady since tip
Why Winkers on for the first time too. His last start was a 5th at Grafton 1181m held up with a slow start, so the excuse is there and a clean run from the back gives him a shot.

Roughie: Reel Patience (No.2) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.3% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why Ear muffs and a lugging bit both go on for the first time, so it's a bit of a new-look runner. Brandon Lerena from barrier 2 needs the slow start to set up a tight run.

Race 3 – Murwillumbah Racing Big Dance Day Mdn Hcp

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with Raising Suspicion from barrier 1 the likeliest to find the front. Dancing By is the one the shape helps most from barrier 9 in the drawn-wide group, while Tramca and Raising Suspicion are hurt most by the expected pace. Private Max from barrier 3 settles midfield, which is the shape working against him, but he has the form to match.
Punty read: Private Max at $2.44 is the bet, and the shape is against him, but his last start was a 2nd at Lismore 1220m over 1220m, and the Mallyon and M J Dunn combo is strong. He's a horse who's been placed in his last two and I'll take the place value that comes with him. Raising Suspicion has the early speed but has finished 8th and 4th in his last two, so the front-running play is not one I'm sold on. Limbazi from barrier 4 has been running strongly over the Grafton 940m and 946m tracks, and Dancing By is the one the shape hands the best of it to.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)

1. Private Max (No.2) — $2.45 / $1.20
Bet $12.00 Win, return $29.40
Prob 42.4% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 1.04x Steady since tip
Why Mallyon on board, M J Dunn at track on 16.7% over 7565 rides, and a 2nd at Lismore last start. The price looks a bit tight, but he's the one with the form that holds up.
2. Raising Suspicion (No.4) — $3.90 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.57x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.55 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Limbazi (No.1) — $5.70 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.6% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Lugging bit on for the first time and a 1st at Grafton 940m last start. Ben Looker's at-track figure is 12.6% (1120/8875) and he's a horse who wins from the front-half of the field.

Roughie: Dancing By (No.7) — $14.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 24.3% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 9 is a long way round, but the shape helps him most and the trainer Adam Campton is running hot on the last 100. He's a roughie that needs the field to bunch up and give him a clean run.

Race 4 – Vo Rogue Garden Party @ Murbah Melb Cup Day Country Boosted Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Kobi Express the only leader from barrier 1. Parting The Seas from barrier 8 and Dellucy from barrier 10 are the forward runners who have to work across to get the trip, and the shape suits them both. Kobi Express has a 0.73 map factor against him, so the lone speed is the one that has to hold on. Prestige Sotirio and Prestige Special are the Stephen & Jordan Lee pair who sit off that lead.
Punty read: Prestige Sotirio at $4.40 is the bet. He won at Lismore 1010m last start, and the cross-over nose band is on for the first time. Trainer Stephen & Jordan Lee have three runners here and the market has been kind to this one. He's not on the speed map so I won't claim a position for him. Parting The Seas at $5.70 is the danger from barrier 8 with the shape working his way, and Kobi Express is the horse who has to hold on at $9.00 if the speed stays uncontested.

Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)

1. Prestige Sotirio (No.6) — $4.40 / $1.72
Bet $8.50 Win, return $37.40
Prob 17.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Won at Lismore last start and the Lee stable is in form. Cross-over nose band on for the first time, which is a bit of a question mark, but the form is good enough to take him on.
2. Prestige Special (No.7) — $5.20 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.9% | Place: 45.3% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Parting The Seas (No.2) — $5.70 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 37.9% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why Fastest time and 2nd-ranked L400 on the card for this one, and the shape helps him from barrier 8. Ben Looker is in the saddle, and his 4th at Grafton 1006m last start shows he can run on.

Roughie: Prestige Reign (No.5) — $9.00 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.01x Steady since tip
Why Luke Rolls on a Lee runner at barrier 2 will be looking to sit close to the lone leader, and the 7th he ran at Grafton 940m last start isn't flattering but his place prices give him a path.

Race 5 – Murwillumbah Racing Melb Cup Day (Bm66)

Race type: Benchmark 66, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Nomomeikushi the only leader from barrier 6. Master Artist and Trinity State are the ones the expected pace hurts, and Lady Alabama from barrier 8 is in the drawn-wide group that has to work to cross. Discreet Point from barrier 5 settles back, and the shape helps him, so he's the one who gets to pick his spot.
Punty read: Discreet Point at $1.92 is the bet. He's been placed in his last two including a 4th at Eagle Farm last start, Mallyon is the rider, and the price has firmed from $2.05 which tells you the market is with him. The shape helps a back runner and there's no clear speed to chase him down. Trinity State at $4.40 is a value horse from barrier 2 but the shape is hurting him, so I'll take the place risk on him rather than the win. The Torque Xpress at $5.70 is the one who will sit close and run on if the early tempo gives way.

Top 3 + Roughie ($4.00 pool)

1. Discreet Point (No.3) — $1.92 / $1.07
Bet $4.00 Win, return $7.68
Prob 33.8% | Place: 56.1% | Value: 0.65x Steady since tip
Why Mallyon riding and the shape helps a back runner. Good form at 1-2-2 from eight starts on good ground, and a 4th at Eagle Farm last start shows he's close.
2. Trinity State (No.7) — $4.80 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.5% | Place: 47.8% | Value: 1.08x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.45 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. The Torque Xpress (No.2) — $6.00 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 44.3% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Jett Newman and M J Dunn with a 3-1-2 record from 12 starts. Bumped and slow-started at Gold Coast and Doomben, so the excuses are there and he's back on track.

Roughie: Whiskey Miss (No.8) — $10.00 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 28.6% | Value: 0.82x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 7 and held up and bumped at Lismore last time out, but she ran the fastest L600 on the card in that race. A clean run from midfield is her path, and the Dist record of 2 wins from 3 starts at distance is a plus.

Race 6 – X-Mas Cup Lismore Fri 18th Dec Country Boosted (Bm58)

Race type: Benchmark 58, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with a whole crowd wanting the front, so no one will get an easy lead. Hot Wings from barrier 1 is handy but the expected pace hurts him most, with Copenhagen Cat also hurt. Brief Authority and Rainbow Lass are both drawn wide and have to work across, and the closers like Virginia Breezes from barrier 9 need cover to get the run.
Punty read: Hot Wings at $3.50 is the bet, and the reason is the first-up record of 4-1-2-0 from four starts and a class record of 2-0-0 at class. He's been off 63 days and comes back with a weight rise of 5kg. The pace is against him and the market has firmed from $3.90 to $3.50, which is the money coming. Brief Authority at $4.20 is the danger from barrier 10 with Andrew Mallyon, and Rainbow Lass at $12.00 is the roughie with the heavy track record of 2-1-0 from five starts.

Top 3 + Roughie ($3.00 pool)

1. Hot Wings (No.2) — $3.50 / $1.57
Bet $3.00 Win, return $10.50
Prob 20.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why First-up record of 4-1-2-0 and a class record of 2-0-0. Firming in the market and William Galloway riding, so the market is backing him for a reason.
2. Brief Authority (No.5) — $4.20 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Amaya's Secret (No.1) — $4.50 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why A 2nd at Grafton 1000m last start and a distance record of 2-5-1 from 11 starts. From barrier 7 she can settle on the speed and grind on.

Roughie: Rainbow Lass (No.8) — $13.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.14x Steady since tip
Why Track record of 2-1-0 from three starts and heavy record of 2-1-0 from five. Bumped and hampered twice recently, but Violet Soulsby on board and the heavy track is the path. She's carried weight in the 57-58kg range without a win, which is the warning.

Race 7 – Ballina Boxing Day Races Plate (C2)

Race type: Class 2, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with a bunch of runners wanting the front. Airhawk from barrier 9 is the one the shape helps most, and Stern Dispute, Doingiteasy and Lennystar are hurt by the expected pace. Sunset Trail from barrier 7 is handy and the shape helps him, so he's the one who gets to sit and run on. Spicy Wings from barrier 8 is drawn wide and has to work to cross.
Punty read: Sunset Trail is the Each Way bet at $4.70. He won at Lismore 1536m last start, the Dist record is 1-1-0 from five starts at distance, and Luke Rolls is riding a 9.7% at-track rider. The shape helps him from handy, and that's why he's the one I'd put the money on. Sorrenti at $3.50 is the danger from barrier 6, who's been placed twice at 1-2-3 and has the combo of Brandon Lerena in the saddle. Airhawk from the back at $4.80 is the horse the shape rewards most, so I'll be watching him closely.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)

1. Sunset Trail (No.4) — $4.80 / $1.65
Bet $10.00 Each Way ($5.00W + $5.00P), collects $32.25 if it wins ($24.00 win + $8.25 place), $8.25 if it only places
Prob 18.9% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.91x Steady since tip
Why Won at Lismore last start and the shape helps him from handy. Luke Rolls has the rider's figure at 21% over the last 100, and the Stephen & Jordan Lee stable is in form.
2. Sorrenti (No.9) — $3.50 / $1.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.4% | Place: 45.6% | Value: 0.64x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Airhawk (No.1) — $5.00 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why Two wins from four starts and a 1st at Grafton 1400m last start. Shape hands him the best of it from the back, so he's the one who could steal it.

Roughie: Spicy Wings (No.2) — $13.00 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why Slow start and raced wide at Lismore and Grafton, so the excuses are there. Jett Newman on board from barrier 8 and the fastest time in the sectional line, if the moderate pace gives her a sit and a late run.

SEQUENCE LANES

QUADDIE (R4–R7)

Smart: 6,7,2,5 / 3,7 / 5,2,1 / 1,9,4 (72 combos x $0.4444 = $32.00) -- 44.4% flexi
Punty's take: Race 5 is tight with Discreet Point and Trinity State, while Race 4 and Race 6 are open and the ticket is wide for a reason. Three of four legs are open races, the flexi floor sits at 33.3%, and a $5 to $10 winner somewhere is what makes this pay. It's a fun ticket rather than the main game, so don't get carried away.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Three gear changes for the first time
Alexandra Parade in Race 4 wears blinkers, ear muffs and a tongue tie, and all three are on for the first time. Zac Wadick and Daniel Bowen are the combo, and the market hasn't moved on this one yet, so watch what happens in the lead-up.
2 - Copenhagen Cat heavy market support
Copenhagen Cat in Race 6 has shortened from $8.50 to $6.50 with the market marked HEAVY. Last start was a 7th at Grafton 1181m with interference, so the excuse is on the record and the money is coming.
3 - The lone leader with the drift
Nomomeikushi has the only uncontested lead in Race 5, and the market is walking away from him, $34.00 out to $41.00. A lone leader on a Heavy 8 track getting the front seat and the market leaving the car running is the sort of story that makes me smile.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Heavy 8 at Casino is a test of guts more than class, so back the horses who have the trip and the track and don't chase the big prices just for the thrill. Enjoy the day, mate, and if the rain turns up at 17:00 just remember it's not a sign to double up.
