Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden; 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, with Prized Gesture and This Ain't Texas trying to find a rhythm, the backmarkers are hanging around for chaos
Punty read: This one's a Soft 5 maiden where you really want a horse that can hold a position through the slog. Sensesational Star (No.8) is sitting in a spot where she can let others carry the burden, but the real drama is The Ultimate Star (No.4). The map doesn't scream lead, it screams "travel, pounce, and keep grinding" which is exactly how these country maidens get decided. If you've watched enough wet races, you know: the horse that looks like it's going somewhere late is the one.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. The Ultimate Star (No.4) — $4.40 / $1.85 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 23.1% | Place: 54.0% | Value: 1.40x
Why Perfect blend of class read and wet suitability, and the sectionals style fits a late grabber in this sort of field.
2. Sensesational Star (No.8) — $4.80 / $1.57 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.4% | Place: 52.5% | Value: 0.98x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Folsomprisonhooves (No.12) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.87x
Why Solid place route with the right tempo, but the win ladder is too crowded for the dollars today.
Roughie: Distant Stripes (No.1) — $9.50 / $2.75 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.58x
Why If the race falls apart and the inside gives him a lane late, he can sneak into the money like a bloke grabbing your seat at the pub.
Race type: Class 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, but Hussy La Vista has the speed to take control without panic
Punty read: This is set up for a leader or an on-speed runner to win while the backmarkers play Lotto at the end of the race. Hussy La Vista (No.5) is the obvious one to trust, and the market is behaving like it knows. You look at the race shape and it feels like the front will be in the right rhythm, not sprinting itself silly, which suits this sort of mare.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Hussy La Vista (No.5) — $3.80 / $1.70 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$29.40
Prob 33.4% | Place: 62.2% | Value: 1.37x
Why The best combination of pace comfort and tactical control, Soft 5 makes it even more important to travel close.
2. Avalon Lady (No.4) — $7.00 / $2.50 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.27x
Why A real chance — but at $2.50 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Bloomin' Rich (No.10) — $4.80 / $1.57 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 44.2% | Value: 0.58x
Why Too many paths need everything to go right, today I want cleaner.
Roughie: Passing Through (No.6) — $12.00 / $2.50 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.94x
Why If the pace softens more than expected, he can come home and snatch a place, just not my main plan.
Race type: Maiden; 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, but Miss Hard Copy is the one that wants to be the first one to hit the line
Punty read: Sprint maidens on Soft 5 turn into a battle of positioning and quick acceleration. Miss Hard Copy (No.1) is clearly the horse that has the tempo map to do the job. North Star Miss (No.11) looks like the danger if the pace gets a soft run at her, and Brave Summit (No.2) is the kind of outsider that can surprise if the field jumps badly.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Miss Hard Copy (No.1) — $2.25 / $1.30 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 52.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.34x
Why She's the one that just keeps finding the line first, and sprint manners on wet tracks suit.
2. North Star Miss (No.11) — $7.50 / $2.65 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 44.4% | Value: 1.49x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Brave Summit (No.2) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.59x
Why She's got speed but the hard part is turning that into a clean run in a tight sprint field.
Roughie: Lindos (No.9) — $16.00 / $3.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.9% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.84x
Why If there's a scramble up front and the outside lanes open, she can run on for a slice of chaos.
Race type: Class 1, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, with Kenny's Swans set to be right there early
Punty read: Kenny's Swans (No.1) is the kind of horse that makes you respect the early speed on Soft. If he hits the front clean, he takes the sting out of the backmarkers and forces everyone to chase a moving target. Forrest Dancer (No.3) is the stalker with the right kind of run style, and Dundeel Flyer (No.13) is the one that could pressure wide if the gaps appear.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Kenny's Swans (No.1) — $1.82 / $1.14 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 48.4% | Place: 62.6% | Value: 1.04x
Why Barrier one plus genuine tempo on soft means he gets first run at the finish, and that's gold.
2. Forrest Dancer (No.3) — $12.00 / $2.15 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.06x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Dundeel Flyer (No.13) — $6.00 / $2.10 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.93x
Why Could get into the fight, but I'm backing the speed and the stalker logic ahead of him.
Roughie: Navajo Code (No.5) — $19.00 / $4.20 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.7% | Place: 16.7% | Value: 0.97x
Why For a roughie to work, he needs the race to fall apart and lanes to magically open. Possible, just not today's priority.
Race type: Benchmark 58, 1200m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace, which sets up for a runner to still be around at the end
Punty read: When the pace is hot, you need to respect the leaders, but you also need to respect the horses that can sit on them without doing too much. Jazz All Knight (No.1) is a big player here and looks like the one who can keep earning on this map. Melodee Rose (No.4) has the style to run into the money, and Star Empire (No.2) keeps getting dragged into the frame like the mate who always "might as well".
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Jazz All Knight (No.1) — $4.80 / $1.90 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — Cashed, net -$0.75
Prob 24.0% | Place: 47.8% | Value: 1.38x
Why The run style fits hot 1200 metre races, he should be close enough to benefit from the pace collapse.
2. Melodee Rose (No.4) — $4.20 / $1.65 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.85x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Star Empire (No.2) — $6.00 / $2.25 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.95x
Why Decent finish depth, but I'm happy sticking with the primary.
Roughie: Reds City (No.6) — $11.00 / $2.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 28.0% | Value: 0.89x
Why If the leaders gas and he rides the right pocket, he can jump up for a surprise.
Race type: Benchmark 66, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, and it's who handles it best from the right spots
Punty read: Paparazzo (No.5) maps into a strong run. Justbetryin' (No.9) and Marine Girl (No.10) are the sort that can keep coming when others start drifting on Soft. This is the race where a short-priced leader can either flatten out, or turn it into a controlled hit. I'm leaning to Paparazzo for the winner and then letting the roughie take the scary value route.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Paparazzo (No.5) — $4.50 / $1.90 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$52.50
Prob 23.5% | Place: 63.3% | Value: 0.89x
Why Strong run style in a sprint where you need position, and he looks set to keep his momentum through the last 200.
2. Justbetryin' (No.9) — $7.00 / $1.82 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.16x
Why A real chance — but at $1.82 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Marine Girl (No.10) — $7.50 / $2.65 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.02x
Why Same story, she can run on, but I want the main ticket clean.
Roughie: Nights Inferno (No.7) — $18.00 / $2.90 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.01x
Why This is the type that can swoop late if the leaders get a wobble, and that roughie value path is real enough to respect.
Race type: Open, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, so it turns into a game of rhythm and lane opening
Punty read: This is the sort of open 1600 metre that looks one way at barrier time, then turns into a completely different sport at the 600. Talkachino (No.12) has the value profile and the ability to get involved if the front end does a bit of early work. Stormbringer (No.11) is the danger because she can keep grinding and force the race into a staying fight. Fox Appeal (No.3) is there with the class edge, and if the pace is genuine, he can be tough late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Talkachino (No.12) — $5.50 / $2.00 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — Cashed, net +$0.00
Prob 19.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.29x
Why The best mix of run style and value, gets a chance to find a lane without needing a miracle.
2. Stormbringer (No.11) — $4.40 / $1.85 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.1% | Place: 54.3% | Value: 0.96x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Fox Appeal (No.3) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.91x
Why Needs the race to shape up his way, and open cups do that to you at random.
Roughie: Belleistic Kids (No.1) — $13.00 / $3.60 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.34x
Why If the front bunch tires and she gets into clear air, she can run into the finish like it's her job.
Race type: Benchmark 58, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, and you need to be able to handle the grind
Punty read: Vinari (No.6) is the one to stick with, because she looks like she can take a good position and still have something left at the end. Dunna Runna (No.14) has the right profile to pop up, and East Harlem (No.17) is the type that can sneak into the placings if the race stretches early and saves ground in the pocket. Seasmoke (No.9) is the roughie that can turn minor form into major dividends if he gets clear running.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Vinari (No.6) — $4.40 / $1.85 🏆 2ND
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 25.8% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.97x
Why The best balance of pace position and staying power on a Soft track.
2. Dunna Runna (No.14) — $8.50 / $1.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.07x
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. East Harlem (No.17) — $10.00 / $3.30 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.4% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.93x
Why She can place, but for win you want a clearer picture of position and timing.
Roughie: Seasmoke (No.9) — $14.00 / $2.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.99x
Why If the race breaks and he gets a clean run at the finish, the roughie dividends can show up quick.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Cootamundra on a Soft 5, rail True, where the track is wet enough to make cowboys think they can save money, but dry enough for a sneaky backmarker to grab the spotlight. This card feels like a bunch of races where the early speed gets first crack, then the real chaos merchants pounce when everyone else runs out of runway.
2 more things before we go race hunting:
- Soft 5 with a small gusty breeze means horses that can hold a position through the middle third have a real advantage, if you ask me. If they get caught three deep and flat, you can watch their soul leave their body.
- In a meeting with way too many starters and scratchings, you either keep it simple, or you drown in exotics. I'm here to help you pick which one.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Soft 5, 1000-1600m card
Rail: True
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play closer to a speed plus-surfacing day)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 16°C, humidity 61%, wind 11km/h SSW (watch for small gusts and those little "slips" off the turn)
Early lane guess: Early speed matters early, then follow the runners who can keep ground on the straight
Tempo profile: Generally moderate to genuine pace across the card, so I'm backing leaders and handy stalkers, especially where the draw gives them options
Jockeys to follow:
Amy Mc Lucas: she's in the thick of it across multiple races, and she gets horses to the right spot without forcing the issue
Jacob Stiff: good timing in these class jumps, and when the pace suits, she can turn runs into money
Josh Richards: he's been sharp in wet and middle distance type races, and he usually makes a plan rather than just following
Stables to respect:
B Joseph & P & M Jones (6 runners): when they've got a runner mapped to the right part of the track, it often turns into a performance, not a "good effort"
Michael Travers (3 runners): he keeps plugging away and pops up with the one that's due, especially when the market gives it a nudge
Shilleagh Meyervale (3 runners): not every race, but when their horses line up with the right tempo, they show up
Punty's take:
Cootamundra today is the sort of meeting where you can tell yourself you'll be "a bit sensible", then some horse drops out, slings itself at the line, and you start thinking about trifectas like you're in Mission Impossible. Soft 5 at this level usually means the leaders are taking a job, but they do not hand the lead over for free. If a horse is drawn to either lead or sit right on the speed, you want to be with it.
Across the early races, I'm looking for two things. First, whether the map puts a horse in a position to travel, and second, whether the market is actually backing the same horse you'd pick from the race shape. When the market firming matches the pace advantage, that's when you can get a bit braver. When it doesn't, you protect, because wet-track luck is a bastard.
My "keep it tight" spine is pretty clear, Race 2 for a standout, Race 3 for a maiden sprinter that just looks like it's set up, and Race 4 where the speed map is basically a neon sign. You can sprinkle in your chaos, but the base has to be solid.
What it means for you:
Bet like a bloke with a plan, not like a bloke who just got dared. I'm backing a simple approach: in the first four races, keep your bets on the right races and the right patterns, then go wider later if the prices make sense. Place bets are your best mate today, because soft tracks make finishing positions more "sticky", especially when fields spread and jockeys are trying to save ground.
If you're looking for aggression, Race 2 and Race 3 are where I'd put your money first. If you're looking for protection, Race 4 is the perfect "leader sticks their head in front, and everyone else is chasing" situation. For value, Race 6 has a roughie path that makes sense, and Race 7 has one that can get involved if the front end does the usual thing and starts losing rhythm late.
