Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Squadrons and Somemoreplease are the ones you want in the right spots early
Punty read:
This is a sprint where timing matters more than dreams. Booming Belief looks like the horse that's going to be on the speed without getting bullied by the Soft, and once it finds clear air, it can keep kicking. Somemoreplease is the other one, straight into the on-pacer camp, and she's the type that can run right through the line if she doesn't get shoved wide early.
Now, I like the market favourite for a win and I'm respecting the other speed presences. The roughy angle is mainly about chaos in the straight, especially if the front gets rattled and a mid-runner stuns them in the last 100m.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Booming Belief (No.9) — $2.50 / $1.32 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 34.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.89x
Why On-pace, strong finishing section signals, and the Soft 5 suits horses that can keep rolling rather than sprint and die.
2. Somemoreplease (No.8) — $4.50 / $1.75 SCR
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.36x
Why A real chance — but at $1.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Beersheba (No.1) — $6.50 / $2.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.31x
Why Draw helps, and if the race gets scrappy, that's when horses like this can grab a chunk late.
Roughie: Harry Hot Laps (No.3) — $9.00 / $2.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 30.7% | Value: 0.94x
Why Needs help from the race falling apart, otherwise it's just another mid-pack grind.
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so on-pace horses with positioning get first dibs
Punty read:
Slow tempo at 1200m on Soft 5 is where you want to be closer to the front, otherwise you're stuck watching gaps that never open. Queen Of Russia sits right in that sweet spot, on-pace with the draw doing the job, and she should be able to hold a position before the real sprint for home.
I'm also tempted by Toi Toi because the finish still matters even in slow races, but I'm not betting it at this stage. The danger is the race turns into a tactical grind and the best horse gets the run, that usually favours the on-pacers like Queen Of Russia.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Queen Of Russia (No.4) — $2.85 / $1.37 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 29.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.96x
Why Draw + on-pace tactics. When the pace is slow, the horse that can control without doing extra work has a huge advantage.
2. Blazing Future (No.1) — $4.50 / $1.65 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.6% | Place: 46.0% | Value: 0.88x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Toi Toi (No.8) — $7.00 / $1.82 🏆 9TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.39x
Why Real place chance, but the engine room race shape screams Queen Of Russia first.
Roughie: Trickemezi (No.5) — $12.00 / $3.00 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.8% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 1.03x
Why Needs a lucky trip and a pace wobble, otherwise it's too far away from the finish timing.
Race type: Maiden, 1609m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so positioning and staying power both matter
Punty read:
This one's for the lads who can settle, then unleash in the right moment. Overland is my main go, because it looks like it can sit midfield with cover and still hit the line hard. Roth Authority has that sort of presence too, and if it finds space it's a genuine place-getter and a sneaky chance to run top three.
Moonya Lad is the other one, but it's more "place leverage" than "win me now". The real trick tonight over 1600m is avoiding being shuffled when the Soft 5 starts eating lanes, so I want runners that don't need perfect galloping room to still run on.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Overland (No.3) — $3.30 / $1.57 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — ✓ Won, net +$18.66
Prob 25.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.28x
Why Genuine pace helps, and it's the kind that can keep finding under pressure. Each way is the smart way to play the Soft 1600m.
2. Moonya Lad (No.1) — $2.40 / $1.35 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.8% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.79x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Roth Authority (No.7) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.3% | Place: 54.1% | Value: 1.38x
Why If it gets the right run, it can grab a spot in the finish. I'm just keeping the main spend on Overland.
Roughie: Watchya Language (No.8) — $12.00 / $3.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.15x
Why Needs a big slice of racing luck at the right time.
Race type: Open Handicap, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, short sprint means speed holds up more than you'd think
Punty read:
1000m on Soft 5 turns races into a survival game. Hartshorn maps to lead and that's massive here, because when the surface is soft the front doesn't get punished as quickly as it would on top of the ground. Turn Bird is the classic stalker, and Outback Action is the danger if the front has to work too hard early.
The Kamikaze can run on, but 1000m is brutal. You want horses that are already in the race conversation, not ones needing a perfect run to even be in it.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.12 pool)
1. Hartshorn (No.4) — $2.35 / $1.45 🏆 WINNER
Bet $12.12 Win — ✓ Won, net +$16.36
Prob 30.9% | Place: 51.7% | Value: 0.83x
Why It's the pace engine and the draw helps the trip, on Soft 5 that combo can carry you to the line.
2. Turn Bird (No.2) — $3.40 / $1.70 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.04x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Outback Action (No.1) — $5.50 / $2.45 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.58x
Why Big value angle if the pace collapses, but I'm staying disciplined in a thin place race.
Roughie: The Kamikaze (No.5) — $10.00 / $3.50 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.4% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 1.10x
Why Roughie path is real only if there's chaos in the middle, otherwise it's just chasing.
Race type: Class 2 Handicap, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with a couple of runners that can control it, which matters on Soft 5
Punty read:
This is the race where you can see a few horses with ability, but only a couple can get the right position without cooking their legs. Nottington Prince and Spirit Of Mac are the main battlers for the run, and Extra Free is the one that can hang around for a place too if the finish is contested.
Spiritof The Ocean has the form profile but it's a short sprint, and if it doesn't land in the right pocket, Soft 5 can steal the punch. That's why I'm mainly playing the placings, and I'm happy to let the Each Way do the work.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)
1. Nottington Prince (No.2) — $4.80 / $1.90 🏆 WINNER
Bet $9.00 Each Way ($4.50W + $4.50P) — ✓ Won, net +$21.15
Prob 17.5% | Place: 51.7% | Value: 1.22x
Why Quick enough to be in play on the day, and the Soft should keep the race tight enough for it to grab a slice.
2. Spirit Of Mac (No.1) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.17x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Extra Free (No.7) — $5.50 / $1.95 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.00x
Why Solid, but not the one I want when I'm trying to get value.
Roughie: Pro Forma (No.3) — $11.00 / $3.00 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.1% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.90x
Why Needs the tempo to suit and a clean run, roughie stuff.
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1200m
Map & tempo: Short run with moderate pace, pocket runners and on-pace types matter
Punty read:
Kickoff is my pick because it's drawn to give a real crack at the race, and it's the type that can keep travelling rather than get wrestled around. Fabulean looks like a sneaky value runner if it lands in rhythm, and Ask Me Mate has the kind of consistent profile that's dangerous when the race stays together.
Materialist as the roughy? On paper sure, but it's harder for back-end types at this trip on Soft, you need a perfect run and a fast-enough finish to get home.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Kickoff (No.4) — $3.50 / $1.62 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 23.4% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.11x
Why It's the on-pace engine and 1200m on Soft rewards horses that control their own tempo.
2. Ask Me Mate (No.2) — $5.00 / $1.62 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.0% | Place: 52.3% | Value: 1.05x
Why A real chance — but at $1.62 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Fabulean (No.6) — $4.40 / $1.75 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.8% | Place: 48.5% | Value: 1.22x
Why Nice value profile, but I'm keeping the main spend on Kickoff.
Roughie: Materialist (No.3) — $10.00 / $2.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.6% | Place: 33.3% | Value: 1.23x
Why Roughie has to get the perfect run and then hope the race opens up late.
Race type: Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so staying in touch early is the whole ball game
Punty read:
Tsunami is the horse I want at the price because it's in the pocket early and has that "keep grinding" style. On slow tempo, the race tends to bunch and soften late, which is when the best balance horses kick on. Dark Fae and She's A Beauty can both sneak into the placings if they get the right lane, but Tsunami feels like the one that can turn that slow tempo into a real finish.
Hell Of A Bentley is the roughie, and if the pace is off and the field stretches, it can get a cheeky run at the right angle.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.50 pool)
1. Tsunami (No.5) — $8.00 / $1.95 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.50 Each Way ($6.75W + $6.75P) — ✓ Won, net +$53.66
Prob 14.3% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.97x
Why Slow race suits runners that can hold position without burning petrol. Tsunami looks built for it.
2. Dark Fae (No.13) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.05x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. She's A Beauty (No.10) — $7.00 / $2.50 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 37.4% | Value: 1.21x
Why That blinkers angle plus the lane could be dangerous late, but again, I'm sticking to the structure.
Roughie: Hell Of A Bentley (No.4) — $10.00 / $3.10 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 29.5% | Value: 0.88x
Why It's a "needs the right trip" roughie, not a slam dunk in this pace set-up.
Race type: Quality, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so you want someone that can travel and still sprint
Punty read:
Hot Digity Boom is the standout in this one. It's got the speed to be in the battle and the race shape looks like it will reward runners who can hold a position without being parked wide. Toranaga and Colleano both have that "middle of the track" profile where they can run on if they avoid traffic.
Aged Care is interesting, but it's an 1400m and Soft 5 punishes indecision. If you're going to bet, you go with the runner that looks like it can keep finding in the last 300m without needing miracles.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Hot Digity Boom (No.2) — $3.50 / $1.62 🏆 2ND
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 26.5% | Place: 58.9% | Value: 1.01x
Why Pace advantage, and it should be able to stay in the race conversation the whole way. Soft 5 suits a grind if you're balanced.
2. Toranaga (No.10) — $5.50 / $2.10 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.94x
Why A real chance — but at $2.10 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Colleano (No.5) — $6.00 / $1.75 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.96x
Why Place chances, but it's not the value I need to go harder.
Roughie: Bancory Bay (No.9) — $9.00 / $2.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.00x
Why Roughie needs a clear run and the leaders to do something silly early.
Race type: Benchmark 60, 1609m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, but Soft makes the midfield run a different race to the tail
Punty read:
Lone Force is my guy. Over the 1600m, the on-pace profiles usually get the advantage because they can keep momentum instead of playing catch-up in the kick. British Gem and Zeamaize look like place options that can hang on if the race doesn't overly stretch.
Fistsoffury is the roughie because if it times the run perfectly and the leaders fight, it can swoop late. But at 1600m on Soft, timing is everything, and roughies love perfect trips more than punters do.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Lone Force (No.3) — $4.00 / $1.75 🏆 4TH
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 20.1% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.08x
Why On-pace with the right staying rhythm. Over 1600m on Soft, that momentum is gold.
2. British Gem (No.11) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.6% | Place: 45.1% | Value: 0.96x
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Zeamaize (No.5) — $7.00 / $2.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.9% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.97x
Why Could fill, but not enough value to go too wide.
Roughie: Fistsoffury (No.1) — $7.00 / $2.50 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.94x
Why Needs the pace to hold up just long enough for a late lunge, roughie route only.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Townsville on a Soft 5 where the track's doing the heavy lifting and you just need to keep up, sounds about right. This is one of those meetings where the leaders look like they've got a personal chauffeur, but if you chase the wrong one you'll end up buried in the mud like a dropped chicken schnitty.
If you're chasing a clean spine, I've built you a Big 3 Multi with the three most likely winners on the card. Then race-by-race I'll point at the obvious dangers and the sneaky blokes that might run on and steal your lunch money.
Let's get stuck into it, legends.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Townsville, 1000-1609m card
Rail: +7.5m 1000m to winning post +3m remainder
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Speed vs Sticking Power, rail still helps with a bit of ground saving)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 24C, humidity 55%, wind NNE, watch the gusts as it can change how horses finish (and who gets shuffled)
Early lane guess: Back lanes and pockets, rail moves help but soft makes every run a bit "hands and heels"
Tempo profile: Genuine to moderate early, with Soft 5 meaning the front doesn't necessarily get away, it just survives longer
Jockeys to follow:
Nathan Thomas: keeps popping up in the right spots, especially when the race shape suits
Aidan Holt: can land a horse wherever the race requires, watch him around the pace
Sean Cormack: has the type of touch that helps on wet-ish tracks when they need balance
Stables to respect:
S J Royes (14 runners): plenty of runners that get into the race on the right day, and they generally travel
Graham R Hughes (12 runners): often finds a way to have one sneaky in the finish
Georgie Holt (11 runners): when her horses get the right trip, they're hard to hold out late
Punty's take:
Soft 5 at Townsville is like cooking chips in damp sand, everything takes longer and the front can cling on but you'll still see those sit-and-swoopers bolt late. The rail being out a fair chunk matters too, because the saving of ground becomes a real thing around the 1000m and early turns. If you're backing the "runs on" horses, you want them positioned early, not stuck in traffic with nowhere to breathe.
The pace tonight is mixed. In the maiden sprints (Race 1 and 2), I'm siding with speed profiles and market confidence where it makes sense. In the middle races, especially the 1600m maiden (Race 3), I'm looking for proper settling, because Soft 5 punishes poor jumps and lung-busters. Then we finish with open handicap tempo, where the best "grinders" get the right kind of momentum, not just a flash of speed.
Also, keep an eye on gear changes. When you see bits, nose bands, blinkers and the like first time, on a Soft 5 that can turn "promising" into "finishing", quick smart.
What it means for you:
Bet like the track is honest. If a horse maps to the front or straight into the pocket, that's where you push. If it's a backmarker in a race with a bunch of pace on, you protect yourself, and look at place rather than straight win. I'm going to be a little braver where the market support and the pace shape both line up, because that's where value shows its teeth.
For the game plan, I'd treat Races 1, 2, 4 as your "spine bets" (top end chances are real), then sprinkle value where the finish is likely to be messy. The Quaddie and Big 6 lanes are there for a laugh and a sweat, but I'm not pretending they're free money. If you want a serious hit, chase the single-jumpers in the Big 3 Multi, then use place leverage where it's on offer.
