Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden, 1350m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Zephyr Song out to make it honest
Punty read: This is one of those "if the speed is real, take the leaders seriously" races. Zephyr Song is the one to make them chase, and Imminent Appeal has the profile to be in the right spot without needing heroics. The threats are the ones with legitimate excuses, because Doomben can punish a held-up run badly.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Imminent Appeal (No.1) — $2.48 / $1.25 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$19.24
Prob 39.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.31x
Why On-pace-friendly race shape, plus the turn of speed shows in the sectionals.
2. Crazy Eights (No.5) — $3.55 / $1.57 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.23x
Why A real chance — but at $1.57 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Zephyr Song (No.11) — $4.30 / $1.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 52.0% | Value: 0.56x
Why The leader is dangerous, but the value is just not there for me at this number.
Roughie: Dun Darte Cheap (No.7) — $9.60 / $2.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 38.7% | Value: 1.26x
Why Needs a perfect run into clear air, then has to out-finish a field that's built for a bit of pace.
Race type: Benchmark 68, 2240m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so positioning matters more than fireworks
Punty read: Long straight of thought for two grand. When it's slow, the inside and the stalking lanes matter a lot more, because runners that get balance can kick, but closers need the leaders to back up. Super Fair looks like the right type at the right distance, and Iconify is the classier "if it turns into a sprint" danger.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.94 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Super Fair (No.1) — $2.95 / $1.60 🏆 3RD
Bet $11.94 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$11.94
Prob 29.1% | Place: 51.9% | Value: 0.95x
Why Best map of the bunch for a slow tempo, and this horse finds the line.
2. Iconify (No.4) — $3.55 / $1.82 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.97x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Power Of Success (No.5) — $4.20 / $2.00 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.2% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.10x
Why Value comes in, but win-only in this exact "only two place" setup is a hard sell.
Roughie: Ayasaki (No.6) — $10.00 / $3.40 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.83x
Why Needs everything to go right, and at 2240m that's never a safe game.
Race type: Class 4, 1650m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, perfect for a sit and pounce
Punty read: Perfect Play is the one to be on. This type of race at 1650m with slow tempo usually turns into, "who's still got engine at the 400m." Twisted Queen can flash late and Vixenette is the kind of outsider that can run into it with clear air, but the backbone is the lead-up form and how the race should unfold.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Perfect Play (No.1) — $3.65 / $1.40 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$39.75
Prob 45.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.05x
Why Pace profile suits, and it's the sort of horse that gets every chance under a patient ride.
2. Twisted Queen (No.5) — $4.70 / $1.65 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 30.7% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.15x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Vixenette (No.2) — $7.85 / $2.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.5% | Place: 28.0% | Value: 0.93x
Why Can hit the frame with a smart run, but win value is thin.
Roughie: Sir Beveridge (No.7) — $11.75 / $3.20 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.1% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.82x
Why Outsider path is real, but it's basically built on timing rather than profile.
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, but 1200m means positions harden fast
Punty read: Tiny Light is the one. When a horse is that dominant in a sprint maiden, you're not betting a dream, you're betting a pattern. Cavalluna and Star Rouge are the two I'd keep eyes on because if the favourite has to do a smidge too much early, those value runners can jump the queue.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.50 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Tiny Light (No.9) — $1.64 / $1.17 🏆 WINNER
Bet $12.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$8.00
Prob 44.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.94x
Why Sprint maidens are about early rhythm, and this one should get it.
2. Cavalluna (No.14) — $6.70 / $2.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.27x
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Star Rouge (No.8) — $9.50 / $2.85 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.08x
Why Place chance is solid, just not enough edge for win at this exact number.
Roughie: Ready Set Tergo (No.6) — $8.65 / $2.85 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.84x
Why This is the sort that can be glued in the right spot and nab a top three cheque late.
Race type: Class 3, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, leaders get every chance, wind helps on-pace types
Punty read: Spiethtacular should get a soft enough run to do its job. Southern Heiress is the one who can slice and dice late if the leaders kick, and Stormland has the place leverage in a race where pace shouldn't stop. Abender is in the danger zone if the race gets strung out, but that's a "when things go right" kind of deal.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Spiethtacular (No.9) — $3.65 / $1.62 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$27.82
Prob 30.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.06x
Why Best balance in a genuine pace, and Doomben 1200 is prime for a leader that keeps finding.
2. Southern Heiress (No.10) — $3.90 / $1.70 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.1% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.88x
Why A real chance — but at $1.70 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Stormland (No.7) — $5.90 / $1.85 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.9% | Place: 54.4% | Value: 1.26x
Why Big place chance, but today is set up to back the leader harder.
Roughie: Abender (No.1) — $13.75 / $2.90 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.8% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.95x
Why Needs a run-saver through the middle and then to outlast the on-pace brigade.
Race type: Benchmark 78, 1350m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so the first two-thirds decide it
Punty read: Lockyer is super live, but Zouper Fund is the value swing while still sitting in the right race story. This is the sort of race where you can back two on pace and feel like you're not guessing, because the tempo is proper and Doomben doesn't give away freebies on this straight wind.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Zouper Fund (No.1) — $3.40 / $1.55 🏆 3RD
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — Cashed, net -$2.92
Prob 25.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.15x
Why Best all-round profile for a genuine tempo, and the blindfold first time doesn't scare me here.
2. Lockyer (No.3) — $3.20 / $1.50 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.2% | Place: 60.8% | Value: 0.92x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. She Moves Too (No.10) — $5.65 / $1.82 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.00x
Why Can slot in, but this isn't a betting race for overs.
Roughie: Cutepi (No.7) — $9.15 / $2.75 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.14x
Why Needs the right position early and then to build through the line.
Race type: Class 1, 1110m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so it's speed plus the right lane
Punty read: Savage Sequel is the one to win, and this is the kind of Doomben sprint where the favourite is usually there for a reason. Cardonette is the danger because it's that right mix of early pressure and late finishing ability, and Conformity is the exact sort that can sneak into the trifecta if the pace holds together.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Savage Sequel (No.12) — $3.50 / $1.57 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P) — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 29.6% | Place: 58.9% | Value: 1.38x
Why Pace advantage fits, and when the leader gets to control it, it's hard to run them down.
2. Cardonette (No.7) — $3.20 / $1.50 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.99x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Conformity (No.9) — $7.30 / $2.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.95x
Why Can run on, but not enough value to add another saver.
Roughie: Fearless Win (No.11) — $7.95 / $2.65 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.16x
Why Outsider win path exists, but it's not the cleanest map for today.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 9,14,8,18,6 / 9,10,7 / 1,3,10,7 / 7,12,9,11 (240 combos x $0.08 = $20.00) -- 8% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Imminent Appeal (Race 1, No.1)✓ Won — $2.56
2 - Perfect Play (Race 3, No.1)✓ Won — $2.03
3 - Tiny Light (Race 4, No.9)✓ Won — $1.75

Selections
Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Doomben's Good 4 and rail +8m is basically the track telling closers, "Mate, stop being cute." Light wind up the straight, so if you've got speed and you're not stuck in traffic, you're in business.
2 things are screaming at me early: the pace is doing the heavy lifting across the card, and there's plenty of maiden and midweek-style races where "best shape" wins more than "best story." Look for on-pace runners to get every chance, because the gusts are lively but the surface is still fair. Translation, it's not a bog where you can just fling a dart from the back. It's a "get balanced and keep rolling" day.
Now to the spine. My Big 3 is three horses I can back with confidence, then we build the multi like a degenerate LEGO set. After that, we go race-by-race: who can lead, who can sit, who's a value trap, and where the market is doing suspicious cartwheels.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Doomben, Middle Distance card
Rail: +8m Entire
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play On-pace bias, fair hold-up chances)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 22C, humidity 55%, wind 14km/h ENE (watch for light headwind up the straight, gusts)
Early lane guess: Park the speed early, then save ground in the run
Tempo profile: Genuine to slow depending on race, but straight wind is making late bursts harder
Jockeys to follow:
Bella Youngberry: often pops up on pace in support grades, plus she's riding like she knows where the money's going
Daniel Moor: if he's got a horse in range, he usually makes it look simple
Jett Newman: can lift the finish and not panic early, which matters on a +8m rail day
Stables to respect:
Chris Anderson (3 runners): owns a heap of the "could win first time" types, gear tells you they mean it
T J Gollan (4 runners): when his horses are short enough, they're usually there for a reason
M J Dunn (2 runners): consistent place chances, especially when the race tempo lets them settle
Punty's take:
Doomben today is set up for horses that can travel and actually keep going through the middle, not just ping at the 200m marker like it's a supermarket trolley race. With the light wind and gusts, the straight is a bit mean on late closers, so I'm leaning into the map. If the speed is genuine, the front third of the field has to feel like an excuse for everyone else to justify.
Race 1 is the classic maiden chaos where the market shortie probably goes around, but the danger is the "held up last time" brigade bouncing into clear air. Race 4 is the straight-up track bias test with the favourite, Tiny Light, where anything off the rail or off the pace needs a perfect run. Race 6 and 7 are more about race shape, and I'm backing the ones that fit the way Doomben likes to be ridden.
