Gatton today is the kind of Soft 5 where the speed is a weapon, not a marketing slogan. In the shorter races, if you're on the speed early, you're saving ground and timing your run. That means the leaders, and the ones stalking just off them, are your bread and butter. Then at the end, it's all about who still has a bit of juice left after negotiating the slippery bits and the wandering horses.

The other thing? Gear. Blinkers, tongue ties, and all that "why are we changing everything?" stuff. On a Soft 5, those changes can stop a horse from doing daft things, and daft things cost races.
