Rightio Loose Units, Geelong on a Soft 7 with shower vibes, so let's go hunting for the horses that actually wanna chew through mud and still hit the line like they've got unfinished business.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Geelong, 1147m to 1765m card
Rail: Out 8m 1700m - 800m, Out 11m remainder
Official going: Soft 7 (expected to play as a straight up, don't-get-stuck-in-the-zipper type track)
Weather: Shower or two, 9°C, humidity 75%, gusts around 20km/h, feels like 6°C (watch for late rain risk around race time)
Early lane guess: Wider is alive early, then you want on-pace stalkers to cash late
Tempo profile: Slow to moderate, lots of races where the leaders can hold on if they're not swallowed by the tar pit
Jockeys to follow:
Damian Lane: Keeps landing in the right spots and tends to sharpen up when the market gets twitchy.
Jabez Johnstone: Versatile with timing, good for lanes and saving ground when it's messy.
Lachlan King: Gets horses into it early, then keeps them honest in the slog.
Stables to respect:
C Maher (12 runners): This mob loves placing them where the race can fall into their lap, especially in softer company.
Shane Jackson (8 runners): They show up ready, and their horses often run straighter than the form suggests.
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (6 runners): Can have a couple of "wait for it" contenders, then suddenly they're in the finish.
Punty's take:
This is the type of Geelong meeting where you can get paid for being boring, and also get punished for being arrogant. Soft 7 means the ground tests you, and rain risk means the "best run" might not be the prettiest one. I'm looking for two things all day, on-pace positioning and market sense. If a horse is tracking leaders and the price is moving the right way, you're already winning half the argument.
Race 1 sets the tone, stay close, get a clear run, and don't let the backmarkers get a miracle cart ride. Then Race 2 is chaos in the nicest possible way, genuine speed on, so you want a horse that can actually handle the tempo rather than just hope. By Race 5 to Race 9 we're in proper "Quaddie brain" territory, and that means I'm stacking the day with a spine that can't be derailed easily.
What it means for you:
Bet like a loose unit, not a mug punter. In the open races, you don't need to cover everything, you need to cover the right profiles. So I'll give you the Big 3 and the Multi spine straight up, then every race you'll have Top 3 selections plus one roughie who can sneak into the win column if the race shape goes haywire.
If rain hits harder than expected, you'll see more horses fade in the last 200m, so places become gold, and I'll lean on that all day. When the market is firming a runner that maps well, that's your cue to stop second guessing and just get on.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Gaelic Kiwi (Race 1, No.3) — $2.84
Why Soft 7 and staying distance suit, plus it profiles as a genuine contender early and into the finish.
2 - Simply Sassy (Race 5, No.6) — $3.20
Why On-pace runner in a handicap where the leaders get every chance, and the rating for the finishing surge is there.
3 - Omnic (Race 9, No.2) — $2.25
Why Pace-friendly profile with consistent run patterns, it maps for a strong run at the right end of the race.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~20 = ~$200 collect
Race 1 – Ladbrokes Switch Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 2470m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so the stalk and grind types survive, backmarkers need luck.
Punty read:
This one's a staying war. Slow pace on Soft 7 means you don't get to hide in the pack for 20 minutes, you need to be in striking distance when the race finally turns into a proper fight. Gaelic Kiwi (No.3) is the "straight to the point" runner, drawn inside enough to avoid the worst of the traffic and with that staying profile that should love the way Geelong holds the race together on wet ground.
Eye Tracker (No.8) has the sort of place profile you build a day around. If the front group clumps up, he's the type who can slide into the first gap and keep running. Hemi Two Barrell (No.4) has the steam late, and even if it's not winning straight away, it's the kind of horse that can hold a spot in the finish when others hit the wall.
Top 3 + Roughie (19.50 pool)
1. Gaelic Kiwi (No.3) — $2.84 / $1.35
Bet $17.00 Win, return $48.28
Prob 33.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.30x
Why Inside draw in a slow staying maiden, maps to get every chance without being trapped wide.
2. Hemi Two Barrell (No.4) — $3.60 / $1.52
Bet $2.50 Place, return $3.80
Prob 19.5% | Place: 61.2% | Value: 0.61x
Why On-pace style suits the Soft 7 grind, and the excuses in last start were real, not "trainer talk".
3. Eye Tracker (No.8) — $3.90 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.25x
Why Backable place profile, but I'm not forcing it as win money, it needs one of the front groups to snag.
Roughie: Devoted To You (No.7) — $9.40 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.79x
Why If it picks up ground late and the race bunches, it's got the class to swoop for a cheque.
Race 2 – Neon Legal Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1547m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, fast start expected and tempo matters a lot.
Punty read:
This is where you want to respect the leaders. With genuine speed on, the race shape is king, because Soft 7 punishes those who get trapped behind tired horses. Rockzino (No.7) is the kind of on-pacer that can take the race by the scruff and keep finding when everyone's doing the slow-mo stumble.
Melbourne Boy (No.9) is the danger if the tempo holds and he gets a clear path late, but it's more of a "place if it all goes right" sort of play. Foxtrot Charlie (No.2) is the value wave. Big field momentum and it usually runs into the numbers when others get lost in the chaos.
Top 3 + Roughie (13.00 pool)
1. Rockzino (No.7) — $4.00 / $1.75
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), return $26.00 (wins) / $11.38 (places)
Prob 18.1% | Place: 61.6% | Value: 1.16x
Why On-pace, strong map for a genuine tempo race, and Soft 7 rewards runners who keep pushing rather than waiting.
2. Melbourne Boy (No.9) — $4.45 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.76x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Foxtrot Charlie (No.2) — $8.40 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.4% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.24x
Why Value plays here, and if the pace doesn't sprint away, it can slot in and keep going for minor money.
Roughie: Rising Nine Top (No.11) — $12.50 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.29x
Why Needs a little room and a bit of late spread in the finish, that's the ticket to the quinella trifecta chaos.
Race 3 – Gary Coffee Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1147m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, short sprint, and positioning wins fights.
Punty read:
Short track, Soft 7, and genuine pace means nobody gets to stroll. Over Excited (No.9) and Pain Au Chocolat (No.10) are the ones I'm watching because they both have that "on with it" profile, and in sprints the best horses aren't always the fanciest, they're the ones who can stay straight and keep the momentum.
Icelady (No.4) is next cab off the rank on ability and likely in the finish if the leaders don't peel off too hard. But the betting price is doing a lot of work, so I'm not forcing it as win value today.
Top 3 + Roughie (24.00 pool)
1. Over Excited (No.9) — $2.82 / $1.45
Bet $20.00 Win, return $56.40
Prob 17.9% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.78x
Why Quick tempo race where it can keep pressure, plus the gear combo looks like it means business.
2. Pain Au Chocolat (No.10) — $4.65 / $1.90
Bet $4.00 Place, return $7.60
Prob 17.9% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.68x
Why Tactical backmarker to mid, if lanes open it can hit the line like it's had a caffeine hit.
3. Icelady (No.4) — $5.00 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.47x
Why I like the profile, but the value isn't there for me in place today.
Roughie: Jool Of The Bool (No.5) — $14.75 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.4% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 1.01x
Why Barrier blanket and chain gear can spark improvement, but it's a wait-and-see for the exact moment.
Race 4 – Prestige Jayco Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1347m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and you can lose them if you're too far back.
Punty read:
This is a "who gets a soft run through the middle" race. Hydrothermal (No.8) is sharp on early speed and if the race stays moderate, it can hold that good run into the straight. Captain Redbeard (No.15) is the one I want for the place and possible win upset, because it's the sort of grinder that can get a favourable run and keep rolling.
Nasty (No.12) and Cajun (No.13) are live in the exact order if the pace doesn't collapse, both can pop into the finish with clear room.
Top 3 + Roughie (10.00 pool)
1. Captain Redbeard (No.15) — $7.20 / $2.50
Bet $10.00 Each Way ($5.00W + $5.00P), return $36.00 (wins) / $12.50 (places)
Prob 12.3% | Place: 35.9% | Value: 1.09x
Why Long shot-ish but with the kind of place profile that suits maiden middle distances on Soft 7.
2. Hydrothermal (No.8) — $3.55 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 36.4% | Value: 1.02x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Zendarina (No.2) — $5.60 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.0% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.66x
Why Has a look, but it doesn't tick the value enough boxes for me today.
Roughie: Cajun (No.13) — $10.10 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.9% | Place: 19.2% | Value: 1.14x
Why First-time nose band can sharpen a lazy pattern, if it jumps and settles it can sneak into a place cheque.
Race 5 – Centra Hotel Hcp (56)
Race type: Handicap, 1247m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so on-pace horses should get every chance.
Punty read:
This is a proper handicap where the leaders aren't just leading for photos. Simply Sassy (No.6) is the one that screams "I want the front group and I'm gonna keep chewing." On Soft 7, short course speed translates into finishing power, and that profile is ideal for a horse that can stay in rhythm.
Mordialloc Beach (No.5) is the danger if it can get a stalking run and not get stuck in a pocket. Think I'm Divine (No.3) might run into the numbers but the price is doing a little too much work.
And Soobooma (No.8) is your roughie, the one that can go missing in a straight line then suddenly get up late if the race doesn't tighten too hard.
Top 3 + Roughie (10.50 pool)
1. Simply Sassy (No.6) — $3.20 / $1.50
Bet $10.50 Win, return $33.60
Prob 28.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.18x
Why On-pace weapon, and Soft 7 rewards repeated forward motion over late lunges.
2. Mordialloc Beach (No.5) — $6.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.09x
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Think I'm Divine (No.3) — $4.05 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.5% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.66x
Why Looks like a minor money threat, but not the right return for me today.
Roughie: Soobooma (No.8) — $14.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 1.13x
Why Big price, blinkers off plus tongue tie off, if it finds rhythm early it can hit the finish running.
Race 6 – TMC Industries (Bm62)
Race type: BM62, 1147m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, short sprint, you want a horse that can hold its spot.
Punty read:
Nordic Strike (No.4) is the market favourite for a reason, it's drawn and profiled to get into that on-pace lane where the race makes its decisions. Insain Harry (No.3) has the sort of consistent resume where it can be in the mix if there's no chaos behind it.
Duel Venture (No.6) is the value swing if the race shape stays honest and it can run into open space in the straight. Iced Poppy (No.7) is your roughie if the track turns into a quagmire and the slightly bigger-priced runner finds traction.
Top 3 + Roughie (24.00 pool)
1. Nordic Strike (No.4) — $2.42 / $1.65
Bet $20.00 Win, return $48.40
Prob 20.2% | Place: 59.1% | Value: 0.70x
Why On-pacer profile and Soft 7 suits horses that can keep sprinting through the bog.
2. Insain Harry (No.3) — $4.55 / $1.80
Bet $4.00 Place, return $7.20
Prob 15.5% | Place: 67.8% | Value: 1.01x
Why Gets involved in the middle, and if the leaders flatten, it's ready to pounce.
3. Duel Venture (No.6) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 47.3% | Value: 1.21x
Why Strong value, but I'm respecting the place band constraints and keeping the stake cleaner.
Roughie: Iced Poppy (No.7) — $16.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 19.1% | Value: 1.13x
Why Blinkers off and on-pace, if the race splashes around, it can surge late.
Race 7 – Connect Tel (Bm62)
Race type: BM62, 1347m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, so midfield stalking can cash if lanes appear.
Punty read:
In'kantosstar (No.5) is the short price for a reason, but it's also the type that can get caught in the wrong timing if the tempo changes. Katsumi Orochi (No.1) is value and profiles well for a place and possible win if it can settle and go forward at the right time.
Prevention (No.9) is a sneaky one for the place and exact trifecta lanes. It's one of those runners that doesn't need to be a genius, it just needs the race to keep moving and not turn into a crawl.
Paris Winds (No.12) is your roughie, and it's the sort of horse that can inflate if it gets a clear run late.
Top 3 + Roughie (8.50 pool)
1. In'kantosstar (No.5) — $2.22 / $1.30
Bet $8.50 Win, return $18.87
Prob 16.2% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.55x
Why Midfield and pressure capable in a moderate tempo race, it's built for a straight run home.
2. Katsumi Orochi (No.1) — $7.75 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.16x
Why A real chance — but at $2.65 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Prevention (No.9) — $10.10 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.42x
Why Strong place look, but we're avoiding the place band trap.
Roughie: Paris Winds (No.12) — $10.10 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.6% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.49x
Why If it finds a run and avoids being shuffled, it can pop into the money and make a liar out of the price.
Race 8 – Nesbitt Contructions (Bm62)
Race type: BM62, 1547m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, middle distance where you want to be in the right part of the track early.
Punty read:
Stay Humble (No.1) is the central character. It's got the kind of on-pace profile that Soft 7 doesn't break, and it should get a comfy position to start the real sprint phase. Trangoojahray (No.3) is the one that can win if the race bunches and the inside lane opens late.
Alien Angel (No.7) is a value-type in the trifecta conversation, but I'm not betting it as the main target since the place profile is a touch short on value. Ocean Bay (No.5) is live as a danger and can pick up in the final section.
Mislight (No.10) is your roughie, but it needs the wheels to stay greased in the last furlong.
Top 3 + Roughie (19.00 pool)
1. Stay Humble (No.1) — $3.05 / $1.40
Bet $14.00 Win, return $42.70
Prob 25.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.11x
Why On-pace profile, Soft 7 friendly, and distance suits its "keep grinding" style.
2. Trangoojahray (No.3) — $2.97 / $1.75
Bet $5.00 Place, return $8.75
Prob 22.1% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.93x
Why Pace helps it, and it's drawn close enough to land a good trip, then it runs into the placings.
3. Alien Angel (No.7) — $3.85 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.0% | Place: 68.3% | Value: 0.88x
Why It's got speed but not enough value as a place target at this price.
Roughie: Mislight (No.10) — $15.75 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.0% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.91x
Why Big-price type, if it gets a smooth run and the pace collapses, it can sneak into the finish.
Race 9 – Geelong Cup On Sale Now (Bm62)
Race type: BM62, 1765m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, staying finish where the best position matters more than flash speed.
Punty read:
This one is a "don't get stuck and don't overdo it" race. Omnic (No.2) is the main pick because it sits on that sweet spot where it can stay involved without burning up early. Kiwi Jenni (No.7) is a place chance type and can be there if the race sets up for a finishing run.
Bellabama (No.11) has a decent look for a place but I'm not pushing it. Princess Sakiko (No.12) is your roughie if the race splits and it can hit the line running.
Top 3 + Roughie (15.00 pool)
1. Omnic (No.2) — $2.25 / $1.30
Bet $10.00 Win, return $22.50
Prob 26.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.92x
Why Pace-friendly profile for a staying BM, it should get the trip and keep running when others tire.
2. Kiwi Jenni (No.7) — $5.10 / $2.00
Bet $5.00 Place, return $10.00
Prob 12.2% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.97x
Why Soft ground suits, and it's set up for the late pick-up if the leaders soften.
3. Bellabama (No.11) — $5.10 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 50.0% | Value: 0.89x
Why It can run well, but the place return isn't doing enough for me today.
Roughie: Princess Sakiko (No.12) — $11.50 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.9% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.06x
Why Big finishing gear for a long race, if the tempo holds and it gets a clean run it can pay you back in a hurry.
SEQUENCE LANES
EARLY QUADDIE (R2–R5)
Smart: 7,9,2,11 / 9,10,4,8 / 8,15,2,13 / 6,5,3,8 (256 combos x $0.25 = $65.00) -- 25% flexi
Big 4 open legs make this pure roulette, wide enough to catch a split, but still tight to keep the outlay sane.
QUADDIE (R6–R9)
Smart: 3,4,6 / 5,12,9,1 / 1,7,3,6 / 2,7,11,12 (192 combos x $0.34 = $65.00) -- 34% flexi
Late races can turn savage in soft ground, so four-leg coverage stays broad, but the first three legs give you a fighting chance.
BIG 6 (R4–R9)
Smart: 8,15,2,13 / 6,5,3,8 / 3,4,6,10 / 5,12,9,1 / 1,7,3,5 / 2,7,11,12 (4096 combos x $0.00 = $5.00) -- 0% flexi
Entertainment only, you're banking on at least a couple of the favourites doing what they're supposed to, and the rest giving you that magic gap.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Soft 7 at Geelong makes "clear run" more important than "best horse"
When the rain risk is live, the first 100m where they're either balanced or doing extra work decides the last 200m, so pay attention to who's not forced four wide.
2 - Blinkers first time horses are the sneaky placers today
Gear up plus soft ground often equals a horse that finally settles, that's why you'll see better place returns from first-time gear than pure win betting suggests.
3 - The slow tempo staying races are where backmarkers get punished
If a race sets up slow, you don't get to win from the tail unless the front group starts falling over, so I'm siding with on-pace and stalking profiles early.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Go and back the spine, then let the roughies sweat. If Geelong starts turning into a skating rink with mud, you'll find the place money pays for your losses and then some. Now get to it, you legends, and keep it clean at the windows. Gamble Responsibly.
