Rightio Legends, Naracoorte on a Heavy 9 is basically a skip bin full of treacle and broken hearts. The rail is true, the rain gods haven't swung by today, but that doesn't mean the track won't punish you anyway. In these conditions, early speed matters more than your cousin's hot take, and barrier position turns into the difference between "bolted in" and "never went a yard".

If you're chasing the day, I'm going through it with a proper spine. Race 1 is a classic wet-track maiden where the race shape decides everything, Race 2 is a short-price situation where the right horse can steamroll a section of field, Race 4 is where the value starts whispering sweet nothings, and then we roll into the Quaddie lanes like it's a pub tab you've been saving for.

Also, quick one, this card has a lot of "looks like a lock" runners… and a couple of sneaky ones that can ruin your otherwise perfect ticket. That's why I'm mixing strong tops with one roughie per race where the path to winning is real, not just vibes.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Naracoorte, 1100-1430m card
Rail: True
Official going: Heavy 9 (expected to play power and positioning, with the speed holding on more often)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 6°C, humidity 90%, wind 11km/h NNE (watch for the cold feel, it makes horses travel slightly "stitched up")
Early lane guess: True rail, protect inside speed early, then keep an eye on any runner going up on the turn
Tempo profile: Genuine to moderate, Heavy 9, so the leaders can steal a march, but the real danger comes from runners who get one run and stick to it
Jockeys to follow:
Harry Grace: Often involved early on the Heavy, knows how to ride the ground instead of fighting it
Campbell Rawiller: Reads races well around this distance, keeps horses balanced when the track gets chewy
Connor Murtagh: Backmarker-to-midfield mover who can still hit lines hard when others are losing grip
Stables to respect:
S & J Jaensch (2 runners): They've got the "get them ready" vibe on this sort of surface
Wayne Walters (2 runners): Persistent in heavy slog races, their runners don't usually look lost
Aaron Bain & Ned Taylor (1 runner): When they go, they go, and they do it with intent

Punty's take:

Naracoorte Heavy 9 is one of those days where you can't be precious. If you're too far back with no cover, you start spending fuel for no reason. The winners today are the ones who either control the pace or get a pocket and get clear at the right time.

Race 1 kicks off with a nasty maiden where the speed should be honest. Pretty Morsel looks like she's built for this, and I want her on top, because in heavy ground you don't need to fly, you just need to keep finding. Fomenter is the "everyone else is wrong" type at short odds, but I've got him as the key place play because the real value on days like this is often in the exact order of who's still finishing strongest.

Then Race 2 is the opposite mood, a clear fav scenario where Settle Petal can just keep taking bites out of the line. After that, it's a midfield battle fest, Race 3 and Race 4 especially, and that's where you separate "betting" from "guessing".

What it means for you:

Be aggressive early with the top selections where the map fits, and don't overthink it when a horse is drawn to go and the market isn't lying about intent. I'm not going wide for the sake of it, I'm backing the right stories.

For the lanes, Quaddie R4 to R7 is your main event, and I'm not pretending it's safe. R5 is a trio race, R6 is a tight enough trappy set, and R7 is mid-fav messy, so we cover the reasonable shapes and accept we're here for a payout, not a hug.

And yeah, I've kept the roughies logical. No "spray and pray" stuff today.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

1 - Pretty Morsel (Race 1, No.7) — $2.55
Why She's got the run-on profile for Heavy 9 and the right sort of race shape around her
2 - Settle Petal (Race 2, No.9) — $2.79
Why Short price for a reason, she fits the ground and should stalk into the finish
3 - Mrs Harris (Race 4, No.3) — $2.75
Why Speeds up where it matters, and the Heavy 9 suits her hit-the-line style

Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~$20 = ~$200 collect

Race 1 – Vale Leith Gale Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1430m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Chilly Bro is the likely leader, watch the on-pacers take their shot
Punty read: Heavy 9, 1430m, and a maiden that should run "true-ish". Chilly Bro wants to lead and can get a breather early, but the danger is the ones who can travel in the pack and still have a gear when the mud starts chewing. Pretty Morsel is my top pick because she looks like she'll keep going where others hit that wall. Fomenter is short for a reason, but because it's a maiden, I don't love locking him in as a win-only play. Road To The City can be dangerous from the inside, but he's not the one I'm betting to take the title today.

Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)

1. Pretty Morsel (No.7) — $2.55 / $1.52
Bet $20.00 Win, return $51.00
Prob 40.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.04x
Why Right pattern for Heavy 9, should keep accumulating ground late

2. Fomenter (No.2) — $3.21 / $1.74
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.96
Prob 32.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.02x
Why Speeds into it and gives you a place safety net if the race shakes loose

3. Road To The City (No.5) — $9.80 / $3.93
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 47.4% | Value: 0.90x
Why He can run a good race, but he's in that "could place, hard to win" zone

Roughie: Resilient Ruby (No.8) — $13.70 / $5.23
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.1% | Place: 38.2% | Value: 0.98x
Why If it all falls apart, she can run on, but you're not buying the win story today

Race 2 – Vale Murray Telfer Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, a few on pace can do the work, but it's not a burner
Punty read: This one's built for control. Settle Petal is the standout, she's drawn to get a trip and the track type should suit her. Secret Owl is the sort of runner that can sit on and be dangerous late, and the gear change has me listening. Supreme Sailing looks like a steady each way for the placings, but he's not the one I want winning into this Heavy. Calm The Press is the honest on-pacer, Nic The Cash is the inside midranger that can run into the money if the speed doesn't go full manic.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Settle Petal (No.9) — $2.79 / $1.60
Bet $15.00 Win, return $41.85
Prob 37.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.03x
Why Short enough price to trust, and 1200m on Heavy is where smart positioning pays

2. Secret Owl (No.8) — $4.69 / $2.23
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.00x
Why A real chance — but at $2.23 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.

3. Supreme Sailing (No.10) — $5.56 / $2.52
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 60.7% | Value: 0.95x
Why Needs a clean run and the finish to suit, can get there, just not enough value

Roughie: Calm The Press (No.1) — $10.20 / $4.07
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.09x
Why Nice in the race, but I want my money on the ones that can actually win it

Race 3 – Sportsbet Get On Extra Hcp (54)

Race type: Handicap, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Unlimited Ability set up top, so it's chaos for the back half
Punty read: 1100m on Heavy 9 is brutal because you're sprinting on guts and decisions. Just Like Lisa is my pick because she's the type that can handle the mud and still hit a flat spot at the right time. Shooting For Stars is the key danger, he's got the on-pacer profile and should be right there at the business end. Melissa Kate can run into the placings, but this is a race where I trust the ones that can keep their rhythm. Nankeen is interesting, but he's not a "go now" win bet for me, more of a watch if you're chasing trifectas.

Top 3 + Roughie ($4.50 pool)

1. Just Like Lisa (No.6) — $3.16 / $1.72
Bet $4.50 Win, return $14.22
Prob 33.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.07x
Why On-pacer, Heavy 9 tolerant, should be in the right part of the race before it gets sticky

2. Shooting For Stars (No.7) — $4.72 / $2.24
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.0% | Place: 60.9% | Value: 1.09x
Why A real chance — but at $2.24 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.

3. Melissa Kate (No.8) — $8.47 / $3.49
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.96x
Why Might be there, might not, but I'm not trusting her to take the title

Roughie: Nankeen (No.4) — $11.36 / $4.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.56x
Why Path is real if the pace collapses, but he needs things to go his way

Race 4 – Hansen Print Hcp (C1)

Race type: Handicap, 1430m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Rhinestone Rory sets it up, but the on-pacers get their chances
Punty read: This is Mrs Harris' race type. Tongue tie off first time, and on Heavy 9 she should be able to keep working through the conditions without going backwards. Cute Girl is the value angle here. She's the one that can sit handy and pounce if the leaders tire. Winning All Round is close enough to feature, but I'm not ready to hand him the win with that price profile. Frontpoint is a place chance, Hamilton Brown is a "sneaky if it falls apart" type.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Mrs Harris (No.3) — $2.75 / $1.58
Bet $15.00 Win, return $41.25
Prob 36.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.00x
Why Heavy 9 timing, tongue tie off for a reason, she gets momentum turning

2. Cute Girl (No.2) — $5.08 / $2.36
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.29x
Why A real chance — but at $2.36 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.

3. Winning All Round (No.1) — $11.24 / $4.41
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.9% | Place: 26.8% | Value: 0.89x
Why She can be thereabouts, but she's the sort that needs everything to line up

Roughie: Frontpoint (No.5) — $11.90 / $4.63
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.5% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.90x
Why Works for the place look, but I'm not spreading too far in a Heavy handicap

Race 5 – Transmac Freight Hcp (56)

Race type: Handicap, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Easy Beast leads, so it's endurance plus position
Punty read: 2000m on Heavy 9 is where you want a horse that can still hold a line when everyone starts punching the air. Easy Beast is your leader type and will take some catching if he gets the right breathing. Hasta La Amnesty is the midfield runner who can finish on, but Vivacious Award is the one I'm watching for placings and momentum, she looks built to keep grinding. Easy Beast as a win? maybe, but the value in this set is different. I'm keeping it tight with Easy Beast as the value runner in the trio, and backing the miss not the dream.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Vivacious Award (No.12) — $3.64 / $1.88
Bet $7.50 Win, return $27.30
Prob 21.1% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.76x
Why She's got the right stay-in-the-race profile on Heavy, even if the win is tougher than it looks

2. Hasta La Amnesty (No.4) — $5.62 / $2.54
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 41.6% | Value: 0.90x
Why A real chance — but at $2.54 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.

3. Easy Beast (No.3) — $8.47 / $3.49
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.9% | Place: 41.0% | Value: 1.17x
Why Win value is interesting, but the betting plan keeps him off the place line

Roughie: Carashan Chloe (No.2) — $9.52 / $3.84
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.86x
Why Backmarker swooper, if the leaders burn out early she can join the party

Race 6 – Elders Naracoorte (Bm64)

Race type: Benchmark 64, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Howl and Hedonist style pressure, it's a speed-biased sprint
Punty read: This race is two-horse energy at the front, and I'm buying it. Hedonist and Howl both look like they're in the right lanes of the race. On Heavy 9, 1100m turns into a battle of who can maintain a good rhythm when the track steals grip. Hedonist is the value winner play for me because he's not just surviving, he's the one most likely to keep getting brave. Howl is the obvious threat, and Satay Chicken is your outside-ish in the mix.

Top 3 + Roughie ($4.50 pool)

1. Hedonist (No.2) — $4.81 / $2.27
Bet $4.50 Win, return $21.64
Prob 25.1% | Place: 62.5% | Value: 1.21x
Why Blinkers combo, He looks the most adaptable to Heavy sprinting and keeps going

2. Howl (No.4) — $4.98 / $2.33
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.5% | Place: 60.1% | Value: 1.22x
Why A real chance — but at $2.33 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.

3. Satay Chicken (No.1) — $5.85 / $2.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.7% | Place: 63.0% | Value: 0.86x
Why Good chance to run a race, but not enough on the betting maths for me today

Roughie: Halliwell (No.3) — $10.00 / $4.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 0.80x
Why Needs a pace wobble to swoop, and she's not the main story in this heat

Race 7 – Fintegra Lending Solutions (Bm56)

Race type: Benchmark 56, 1430m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Stargust mid-pack energy, and it can get messy into the turns
Punty read: This is where Heavy 9 becomes a chess game. Tannenburg is my top because she looks like she can keep taking ground without panic, and that matters when the pace isn't a runaway. Kalosyni is the next best, drawn well enough to get a trip, and Lysander and Exonumia are both capable of charging late. Robert The Puss is an each way at heart, and Aquaholic can be a sneaky place runner if the tempo holds steady. If you're playing for a finish, Exonumia is the roughie, she's got the value profile to run in the money and maybe more.

Top 3 + Roughie ($18.00 pool)

1. Tannenburg (No.3) — $4.63 / $2.21
Bet $18.00 Win, return $83.34
Prob 26.1% | Place: 66.4% | Value: 1.21x
Why Heavy 9 stamina, good lane for a mid-race move, and she can finish the job

2. Kalosyni (No.10) — $5.71 / $2.57
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 60.4% | Value: 0.77x
Why A real chance — but at $2.57 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.

3. Lysander (No.14) — $8.70 / $3.57
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 39.0% | Value: 1.14x
Why Value in the win sense, just not the right price-bucket for place play

Roughie: Exonumia (No.11) — $9.52 / $3.84
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.10x
Why On pace, keeps building, and Heavy 9 rewards the horse who doesn't over-race early

SEQUENCE LANES

Quaddie (R4–R7)

Smart: 3,2,5,1 / 12,4,3,2 / 1,2,4,3 / 3,10,11,14 (256 combos x $0.14 = $35.00) -- 14% flexi
Punty's take: R4 is the wide-open cover, R5 stays in a compact trio, R6 is a tight frontline balance, R7 is mid-fav messy, so this is entertainment with intent.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Tongue ties matter more on Heavy 9 than people think
When they go on or off for a reason (like Mrs Harris' tongue tie off first time), they often help the horse hold rhythm through the chew.

2 - Beware the "leader who runs out of road" in the 1100m Heavy blasts
At 1100m, even genuine pace can turn into a slog late, so your best bets are the ones who can still travel without being asked to sprint from a standstill.

3 - Exonumia and Robert The Puss type races often go in the exact order you least expect
One of them sits in the right spot and makes the rest look silly, that's why Exonumia's roughie place play is here, she's not a random flyer.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Heavy 9 punting is like trying to do cardio in a wool jumper, you either control your breathing or you pay for it. My job is to get you on the horses that keep moving, and off the ones that turn into parked cars in the mud.

Gamble Responsibly.
