Punty's Punts
Race type: Benchmark 66, 2100m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Tideford sets it up
Punty read: This looks like a proper staying grind where the leader gets every chance, but Soft 6 stretches the field just enough that the midfield sprinters still get a sniff. Merlin Beach looks like the class and the right profile to keep finding, while Tideford's market support tells you she's doing her job early. The danger is always being stuck behind runners when the straight wind starts helping.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Merlin Beach (No.3) — $3.40 / $1.70 🏆 2ND
Bet $12.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$12.00
Prob 22.3% | Place: 44.4% | Value: 0.94x
Why Proven Hobart and Soft form, plus she can sit close enough to cash late without needing a miracle run.
2. Don't Give Up (No.1) — $3.77 / $1.95 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.9% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 0.91x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Happy Clan (No.2) — $4.95 / $2.35 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.7% | Place: 40.6% | Value: 1.08x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
Roughie: Tideford (No.5) — $13.75 / $4.20 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.1% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.87x
Why She can lead and still get caught, if the leaders stop just a touch, her win chances shrink fast.
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Elite Affair and Sir William press it up
Punty read: Maiden Plate at sprint trip on Soft 6 is basically "who's fit enough to do it now". Chef's Kiss is the market talking, blinkers off for first-time action, and she's got the pace map that lets her switch on. Gold Armour is the other one with a huge chance to be in the right lane, while Authorised Access is the sort that can hit the line and steal a place if the leaders go a bit too hard.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Gold Armour (No.5) — $2.99 / $1.50 🏆 WINNER
Bet $20.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$39.80
Prob 22.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.75x
Why She has the lane to win on a Soft speed profile, and her place confidence means you get a lot of chances to land the finish.
2. Chef's Kiss (No.2) — $3.05 / $1.52 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $4.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$4.00
Prob 22.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.05x
Why Market's giving it a push, blinkers off looks like a "let her see it, let her go" move, and she should be there at the right time.
3. Authorised Access (No.1) — $5.90 / $2.25 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.40x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Geegees Avalanche (No.4) — $9.70 / $3.00 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 45.7% | Value: 1.07x
Why If the speed collapses she can sneak, but you're not buying that at the price when the front runners look live.
Race type: Benchmark 68, 1390m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Tassie Power leads with Kakia handy
Punty read: This is mid-distance, Soft 6, and it looks like a "position wins" race. Flying Billie is the one with the tempo and the class to keep charging, and the interference excuses for other runners point to a clean run being worth money. Sky Land is the kind of horse that can sit just off the speed and still mop up in the last stretch. Just A Needs is in the mix, but the win call needs the right trip.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Flying Billie (No.2) — $3.48 / $1.45 🏆 2ND
Bet $14.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$14.00
Prob 22.2% | Place: 63.4% | Value: 1.00x
Why On-pace style at this trip on Soft is gold, and she's built to keep grinding through the wind-assisted straight.
2. Sky Land (No.6) — $4.40 / $1.65 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 18.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.06x
Why Maps to stalk and then pounce, and the market letting her be a bit shorter feels like she can finish inside.
3. Just A Needs (No.3) — $5.95 / $1.95 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 60.4% | Value: 1.11x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Geegee Strawberry (No.8) — $14.25 / $3.30 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.6% | Place: 19.2% | Value: 0.86x
Why If she gets a dream outside run, sure, but you're relying on luck more than profile.
Race type: Class 2, 1390m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Coastal Strike leads, Ozturk close enough
Punty read: This is a proper C2 set-up, and you've got Megalita looking like the one who can just keep applying pressure. Sh'bourne Power is the big place ally too, because in Soft 6 these horses that can settle and keep a rhythm through the lane often hold the line better than the wide movers. Coastal Strike is there, but the value is not as clean as the top two.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Megalita (No.2) — $2.46 / $1.15 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $14.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$14.00
Prob 29.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.96x
Why Strong on the class side, and at 1390m she's got time to place herself and then see it out.
2. Sh'bourne Power (No.1) — $3.35 / $1.35 🏆 WINNER
Bet $5.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$1.75
Prob 24.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.10x
Why Genuine Soft-track style, plus the draw and map suit a finishing role where she can lock in for the money.
3. Coastal Strike (No.5) — $3.58 / $1.40 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.4% | Place: 54.5% | Value: 0.72x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Nandi Clan (No.4) — $12.75 / $2.90 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.5% | Place: 29.5% | Value: 1.10x
Why Needs a big tactical card to fall her way, and on Soft that can happen, it just doesn't happen often enough.
Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Daytona Diva and In The Ocean pushing up
Punty read: 1200m on Soft 6, you want a horse that can actually sustain the effort without getting chewed up by the mud. Daytona Diva is the headline, and she's drawn to be in business early. In The Ocean is the sort to play a role, but he's more of a risk of being swallowed by the true sprint guns. Alvarinho looks dangerous, yet the value play is more about Daytona Diva holding the line.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Daytona Diva (No.4) — $3.45 / $1.75 🏆 4TH
Bet $12.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$12.00
Prob 28.5% | Place: 53.3% | Value: 1.25x
Why The on-pacing style on Soft with her barrier and racing intent, she should be in the fight a long way.
2. In The Ocean (No.3) — $2.49 / $1.45 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 26.7% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.79x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Alvarinho (No.2) — $5.45 / $2.45 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.33x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Nicco The Greek (No.6) — $17.75 / $4.50 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.9% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.64x
Why She's a "must get everything" runner, and that is how you get robbed on Soft when it comes down to grit.
Race type: Benchmark 68, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Alpine Thunder sets the tone, Geegees Missile pushes into it
Punty read: 1000m on Soft 6 is all about who can keep the momentum and not get lost in the first half. Geegees Missile has the pace weapon and the profile to go straight to work. Billie The Great can be the value place if the race tightens up late, while Alpine Thunder is dangerous but gets tracked as a "if it goes right" type.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Geegees Missile (No.2) — $2.78 / $1.25 🏆 2ND
Bet $20.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$20.00
Prob 33.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.20x
Why On-pace, Soft effective, and the whole race shape screams "she's in control early".
2. Billie The Great (No.5) — $3.17 / $1.35 🏆 WINNER
Bet $4.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$1.40
Prob 18.0% | Place: 59.3% | Value: 0.74x
Why She's close enough to the action to hold a place when the dash gets chaotic.
3. Alpine Thunder (No.1) — $5.40 / $1.72 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.12x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: No Access (No.8) — $11.50 / $2.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.17x
Why Needs the leaders to soften just enough, but the straight will punish indecision.
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, but the run-in matters more than the first 400m
Punty read: This looks like a 1600m where you want a horse that can get position and then keep lifting without burning early. Don Turboas is the main show, but the real leverage is Them's The Breaks in the place arena. The backmarker brigade is risky because on Soft 6 the margin for error is basically a postage stamp.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Don Turboas (No.1) — $2.04 / $1.22 🏆 4TH
Bet $13.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 34.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.15x
Why The profile says "keep going" and the race should suit her when the pace isn't insane.
2. Them's The Breaks (No.11) — $6.20 / $2.35 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.22x
Why A real chance — but at $2.35 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. French Soul (No.2) — $8.80 / $2.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 42.5% | Value: 0.93x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Gold Tianna (No.4) — $10.75 / $3.20 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 0.66x
Why Needs the pace to set up perfectly and then her to produce the finish, doable, just expensive.
Race type: Benchmark 60, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Johnnie Pinch and Purr Sefanee push forward
Punty read: 1600m Bm60 on Soft 6 is about who stays straight and who gets chopped up by congestion. Johnnie Pinch looks like the kind of leader who can keep the race honest, and with the rail out, she should get enough room to keep getting first look. Regal Hunter is a risk of "overbet leader type" vibes. Sir Jag can run a nice race, but the ticket is built around the place saver strategy.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Johnnie Pinch (No.2) — $4.70 / $1.95 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P) — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 16.0% | Place: 65.3% | Value: 0.99x
Why She's drawn to be in the race and the Soft suits the consistent runners who don't panic late.
2. Regal Hunter (No.4) — $3.85 / $1.72 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 67.6% | Value: 0.75x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Sir Jag (No.3) — $4.95 / $2.00 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.0% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.95x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Who Can It Be Now (No.9) — $12.75 / $3.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.41x
Why She's got the value look, but the ticket is protecting the "place is the game" outcome.
Race type: Class 2, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Fruit Of De Vine pressing with Outbush
Punty read: Sprint handicap on Soft 6 is always a bit savage, but it's also where class and clean running get rewarded. Southern Auroras is drawn in a spot that should allow her to control the race rhythm, and Benefitsofmine has the value angle but is tracked as a no bet position. Zulu Fields is the roughie place target, and her profile suggests she can pop into the finish if the pace holds.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.50 pool)
1. Southern Auroras (No.3) — $3.27 / $1.57 🏆 WINNER
Bet $17.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$39.73
Prob 19.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.87x
Why Pace profile and Soft suitability, plus she can take enough of the race with her to hold on.
2. Benefitsofmine (No.1) — $5.90 / $2.25 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.31x
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Bella Chinkara (No.7) — $8.45 / $2.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.29x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Zulu Fields (No.9) — $11.75 / $3.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 40.4% | Value: 1.33x
Why If the early pressure keeps going, she's the type that can slot in and then keep grinding late.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 5,2,4,1 / 6,2,3 / 2,1,4 / 4,3,2 (108 combos x $0.32 = $35.00) -- 32% flexi
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 2,5,8 / 1,11,2,4 / 2,9,7,5 / 3,9,1,4 (192 combos x $0.26 = $50.00) -- 26% flexi
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 2 / 4 / 2 / 1 / 2 / 3 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2.00) -- 200% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Megalita (Race 4, No.2) — $2.46
2 - Geegees Missile (Race 6, No.2)✗ — $2.78
3 - Don Turboas (Race 7, No.1)✗ — $2.04

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Legends, Hobart today on a Soft 6 with the rail +3m Entire, so expect a track that rewards runners who can either get on with it, or stay in the game long enough to pounce when the straight turns into a chute. Wind is giving closers a small favour up the straight too, so if your bloke is still travelling at the 300m, don't you dare throw your ticket in the bin early.
This is one of those cards where the pace is generally there, but it does not mean you can just sit on your hands. You've gotta respect the on-paces, sure, but the real money moments are when they're overbet, or when a horse's tactical position lets them run through the mud with intent. Think movie sequels, the good ones. If they get the run, they've got the scenes.
My spine today is the Big 3 plus Multi, then we build around it with sensible place pressure. Win bets are for horses that look like they're going to steal the show, and place bets are for the ones that look like they're finishing the story properly.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Hobart, provincial 1000m to 2100m card
Rail: +3m Entire
Official going: Soft 6 (expected to play Stamina + Position, with a finishing kick)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 8°C, humidity 83%, light wind with a slight tail up the straight (watch for Wet-ground sprinting, closers holding their runs)
Early lane guess: Front to midfield, with outside swoops in the mix
Tempo profile: Generally genuine pace, where the straight wind helps the ones still rolling late
Jockeys to follow:
T W Evans: Comes up in the "park and pounce" lanes, and seems to get the right rhythm on firmer-minded runners.
J L Keys: When she teams up with the on-pace map, you can feel it in the run, they keep going.
S Gandy: Tough riders, good at managing Soft races where timing matters more than flash.
Stables to respect:
J K Blacker (10 runners): Likes to get gear into the equation, winkers, visors, the lot. When they upgrade, it usually shows.
J L Keys (7 runners): Consistent for this track style, often finds the right position and lets them run.
S Gandy (8 runners): The stable that seems to press when it matters, especially in sprint and middle-distance spots.
Punty's take:
Hobart on Soft 6 is basically a tug-of-war between the leaders' tempo and the finishers' persistence. With the rail out +3m, you've got slightly more room for wide runs, but that does not automatically save the backmarkers. You still need the horse to be doing something at the 400m, otherwise it is just walking past the rest of the field like you forgot your wallet.
Race 4 through Race 6 is where I'm most interested in "winning form" rather than "pretty form". Megalita in Race 4 looks like the kind of horse that can just keep rolling, Sh'bourne Power gives you the place insurance vibe, and then Geegees Missile in Race 6 is the sort of short-priced straight shooter that wins more often than it has any right to. That is your spine money.
Then later, Race 7 is a place-leveraged chaos carnival, because Them's The Breaks is the obvious place target and Don Turboas is the one that can just keep poking forward. After that, Race 8 is a muddier puzzle, and Race 9 is a sharp little handicap where one of the in-form locals can absolutely pinch it.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive early where the market is aligned, and be picky where the odds are trying to make you chase ghosts. I'm comfortable backing the Big 3 types for win conviction, then using place to cover the "got blocked, still ran on" scenarios that happen all the time on Soft.
Your game plan:
- Attack Races 4, 6, and 7 as your core confidence fights.
- Use the top-three picks as the "don't get cute" backbone in every race.
- Let the roughies be roughies, unless you see a clear run style advantage, because on Soft 6 the wrong trip kills value fast.
If you want a simple route, follow the spine, then put the rest of your attention into the horses that can keep a consistent length through the straight. Hobart makes cowboys into heartbreakers, so don't overcommit to big drifting prices unless they've got a real pace story.
