Rightio Loose Units, Kalgoorlie's serving up a Soft 6 with showers breathing down the neck of the meeting, so this is one of those cards where the first horse into the right spot can make the rest of the race look like a pub darts comp after closing time. Rail's out a touch, the tempo is a mixed bag, and a few of these shorties are so short they'd trip over a shoelace, but there's still a proper path to cash if you read the maps right.

This card feels split between the crawl-and-sprint maidens and the races where the leaders get first crack at the fridge. The soft deck should reward horses with a bit of grit and a decent engine, but if the rain keeps nibbling at it, the swoopers will need a bit of luck and a hell of a lot of patience. P J Fernie has a heap of the day stacked up, and if his lot starts landing, the rest of the racebook can get mugged in a hurry.

The juicy bit is that the late races, especially Races 4 to 7, look like the heartbeat of the meeting. Lavish Charm, Prawns Eleven and Whatyoutalkinbout are the sort of anchors that let you build a proper spine, while the quaddie is the old-school Kalgoorlie sweat: a couple of race-day bankers, a couple of open legs, and enough chaos to make a grown punter talk to his betting slip. If you're waiting for a miracle in the back end, you'd better have a better plan than "hope and vibes".

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Kalgoorlie, 1000m-1760m card
Rail: +7m entire
Official going: Soft 6 (expected to play on-pace early, then fair if the rain doesn't punch it into the dirt)
Weather: Showers increasing, 6°C, humidity 87%, light wind, with rain bands due through the afternoon and evening (watch for the surface chopping up)
Early lane guess: Fence to 3-off; keep an eye on whether the inside holds as the day rolls on
Tempo profile: A proper mixed bag - a few crawl-maidens, some genuine-speed handicaps, and a quaddie lane where the front half of the map matters a hell of a lot
Jockeys to follow:
Ms Holly Nottle(a0/50kg) — keeps landing on the right horses with the light weights and the better maps; easy to like on this sort of card
Ms Tash Faithfull — gets a stack of handy rides and knows how to park one just off the pace without burning petrol
Laqdar Ramoly — a bloke you want when the pace map says "sit close and punch the button"; plenty of chances to influence the race
Stables to respect:
P J Fernie (14 runners) — has the biggest army on the card and plenty of them are drawn up in the right lanes
P D Tapper (5 runners) — not huge numbers, but a few of these can sit on speed and make life annoying for the rest
Brock Lewthwaite (3 runners) — a couple of runners with proper map chances, especially if the race shape goes to plan

Punty's take:

This meeting is a classic Kalgoorlie split personality. Races 1 and 2 are those awkward little maidens where everyone looks like they've borrowed a racehorse for the afternoon, but by Race 4 the card starts to sharpen up and the good judges of tempo can really make a fist of it. The soft ground and the rail out mean you don't want to be a hero back in the carpark unless the race is going to fall in your lap.

Fernie has got the numbers, and that's always dangerous when the card isn't a pure speed duel. His runners in the late races have the sort of profiles that can sit handy, save ground and then have the last crack. Meanwhile a few of the on-pacers - think Lavish Charm, Prawns Eleven and Whatyoutalkinbout - look like they can get the run of the race without needing miracles. That's the sort of setup that can put the handbrake on the swoopers.

And keep an eye on the market in Race 7 with Spangledstar. That sort of firming doesn't happen by accident when the alley is a bit of a headache. If the rain deepens and the inside stays decent, the race pattern could get pretty unforgiving for the backmarkers. That's when the nippy, map-friendly types start looking like the cast of a heist movie and the rest are just extras getting rolled.

What it means for you:

This is not the day to spray and pray across every race like a mug with a fresh deposit and a bad attitude. The play is to lean into the late-card anchors, keep the early maidens as small attack zones, and let the quaddie do the heavy lifting. If you want to be aggressive anywhere, it should be on the horses with map control and a clear reason to get the run of the race.

Race 4, Race 5 and Race 7 are the spine. Race 6 can be a proper grinder if the pace cooks up, but Monty Zoomer and Scottish Laird are the sort of runners who can make that sort of race pay. The value is not in trying to outsmart every favourite - it's in picking the right ones when the map, the track and the conditions all point the same way. That's where the money is, legends.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

1 - Lavish Charm (Race 4, No.1) — $1.16
Why Maps beautifully, has the right sort of tactical speed for a Soft 6 sprint, and this looks like the one the others have to reel in.
2 - Prawns Eleven (Race 5, No.1) — $1.16
Why The map is sweet, the weight looks workable, and the horse has the sort of on-pace profile that can put rivals to sleep.
3 - Whatyoutalkinbout (Race 7, No.2) — $1.16
Why Firming in the market and drawn to stalk the right sort of tempo; if the leaders overdo it, he's the one who can pounce.
Multi (all three to win): $10 x ~1.56 = ~$15.61 collect

Race 1 – The Crawl-and-Pounce Maiden

Race type: Maiden, 1630m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with Mad Spitfire and Billy The Boss on the map while the backmarkers need luck and timing
Punty read: This is the sort of race where everyone gets one shot and a lot of them miss the boat. The tempo's gentle enough that the horses on the speed should get first crack, but if it turns into a sit-and-sprint, the backmarkers are going to need a tidy ride and a bit of clean air. Graceful Lass is the one they all have to catch, but don't be shocked if one of the others keeps it honest late.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15 pool)

1. Graceful Lass (No.5) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet $15.00 Win, return $17.40
Prob 24.5% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.90x
Why Short enough to be annoying, but she's got the right map and the stable has her in the frame. If she begins cleanly, the rest are chasing her shadow.
2. Mad Spitfire (No.2) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.5% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.72x
Why Honest type who can sit right up on the speed, but the price is skinny and the finish is still a bit of a question mark.
3. Lanta (No.3) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.5% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 0.83x
Why Keeps finding a way to hang around the money, but this looks more like a place-hugging grind than a wallet-stuffing mission.
Roughie: Sainty Cullity (No.1) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.14x
Why If the leaders go to sleep and the track starts to get stingy, he can sneak into it late. Not a bet to mortgage the barbecue on, but a sneaky one to keep in the notebook.

Race 2 – The Stop-Start Scramble

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with Lovesexy and Wyangle Ruby advantaged up on the speed while Acoustic Bubbles has to do it from the back
Punty read: This one has that classic maiden stink on it - a few with excuses, a couple with gear changes, and not much between them if you squint hard enough. Queen Selyse maps like the one to beat, but the race doesn't look like a speed burn, so the on-pacers can get their chance to make it a procession if they jump clean. If it turns messy, the better-positioned runners will be laughing like they're in on the punchline.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15 pool)

1. Queen Selyse (No.2) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet $15.00 Win, return $17.40
Prob 23.3% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.84x
Why Handy runner with a clean map and a couple of excuses in the locker. If she jumps and gets a soft run, she's the one they all have to get past.
2. Acoustic Bubbles (No.3) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.6% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 0.76x
Why Best left alone unless the race turns into a total mess; can run on, but the shape doesn't hand her a dream.
3. Lovesexy (No.5) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.89x
Why Looks the kind to settle handy and hang around, but the setup screams "place chance" more than "tear up the ring".
Roughie: Mahler's Melody (No.4) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.2% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 0.90x
Why The winkers-on move says the stable is having a crack, and if the penny drops she can lob into the finish. Not the cleanest play, but not a complete write-off either.

Race 3 – The Leader's Lick of the Ice Cream

Race type: C2 Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, with Slippery Fish likely controlling the map and the others needing to chase a moving target
Punty read: This is a better race to have a real opinion in. Slippery Fish looks the one with the right setup, and if he rolls forward and gets into a rhythm, he'll make this bunch work for every inch. I'm Genevieve can be dangerous if the pressure is right and the gaps open, while the others look like they need a bit of luck or a collapse up front. This is your "get on the right horse and let the others do the hard yards" race.

Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)

1. Slippery Fish (No.2) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet $8.50 Win, return $9.86
Prob 18.9% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 1.32x
Why Tracks the right sort of map, loves the course, and if he finds the front on his terms he'll be a bastard to run down.
2. I'm Genevieve (No.3) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.4% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 1.22x
Why Has the wet-track grunt and the right race pattern to stalk the speed, but the saver price is skinny and doesn't invite heroics.
3. Couldabeenahandbag (No.5) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.70x
Why Honest enough to land in the frame if the right run appears, but this looks more like one for the exotics than a straight money race.
Roughie: Firey Panz (No.6) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.83x
Why If the speed turns into a scrap and the favourite gets stitched up early, this bloke can be the one picking up the pieces late.

Race 4 – The Short-Course Speed Trap

Race type: BM58+, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with Eevalina and Dublin Red advantaged and Lavish Charm sitting right in the sweet spot
Punty read: This is the one where Lavish Charm can get the perfect day at the office. The race shape favours the runners that can sit handy without cooking their legs, and the short course means there's not a lot of time for excuses. Dreamers Never Die is the sort who can nick a place if the race goes a bit weird, but Lavish Charm is the cleaner, sharper play and should be hard to roll if she jumps well.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15 pool)

1. Lavish Charm (No.1) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet $15.00 Win, return $17.40
Prob 25.8% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.81x
Why Perfect map, right sort of speed, and the stable has her right where they want her. If she gets the first crack, good luck to the rest.
2. Dreamers Never Die (No.2) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.09x
Why Can run a race if they go a touch too hard, but from the inside she needs everything to unfold cleanly.
3. Natural Gem (No.6) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.96x
Why The soft ground and the right tempo keep her in the conversation, but she doesn't have the same punch as the top pick.
Roughie: High Precision (No.4) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 0.78x
Why Light weight, decent draw, and enough ability to sneak into the finish if the others overdo it early.

Race 5 – The Good Horses' Grind

Race type: BM70+, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with Sure Thing and Science Degree likely forcing the issue while Prawns Eleven gets the map gift
Punty read: This is a proper betting race, but it's also the sort that punishes overthinking. Prawns Eleven has the kind of map punters dream about - handy, efficient and with the right weight setup - while Close At Hand and Playing Games are the sort of runners you keep in your exotics because they can keep grinding if the favourite is a touch off. The Showvinist is the smoky gear-change type, but he's more "wait and see" than "load the truck".

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Prawns Eleven (No.1) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet $7.00 Win, return $8.12
Prob 15.4% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.39x
Why Maps like a dream, gets the right sort of run, and should be in the first wave when it counts. This is a horse made for this kind of hand-to-mouth warfare.
2. Close At Hand (No.2) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.22x
Why Rock-solid type who rarely runs a shocker, but the price and place structure don't make it a bankable saver.
3. Playing Games (No.8) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet $3.50 Place, return $3.68
Prob 13.6% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.22x
Why Drawn to get a decent run and has enough honest form to keep hitting the line. The place bet suits him better than asking him to go to war.
Roughie: Dont Wait For Luck (No.3) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.5% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.94x
Why The name says it all, really. He can be thereabouts if things pan out, but the race shape looks a touch better for the others.

Race 6 – The Tussle at the Mile-ish

Race type: BM58+, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, with Monty Zoomer set to roll forward and the backmarkers needing a fair slice of luck
Punty read: This is a handy old 1400m where the map matters a fair bit. Monty Zoomer looks the logical spearhead, Scottish Laird has the sort of wet-track profile that can make him a nuisance, and Lady Negroni is the one who can sit in the right alley and keep herself in the race. It's not a sit-and-cry lane for the swoopers unless the pressure gets ugly up front.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10 pool)

1. Monty Zoomer (No.1) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet $10.00 Win, return $11.60
Prob 15.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.42x
Why Rolls forward, handles the surface, and has the right type of engine for a race that should be run at a genuine clip.
2. Scottish Laird (No.2) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.41x
Why The wet ground and the grind of the race help him, but the market isn't giving you enough juice to get greedy.
3. Lady Negroni (No.3) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.9% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.25x
Why Can hold a good position and keep grinding, but this looks more like a top-three battler than a bet-and-collect job.
Roughie: Snipperando (No.5) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.27x
Why If the tempo gets serious and the front line starts wobbling, he's the one who can swoop into the picture late.

Race 7 – The Kalgoorlie Pageant

Race type: C2 Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, with Diamond Light leading and Whatyoutalkinbout getting the perfect sit
Punty read: This is the race where the market is already having a little whisper. Spangledstar has firmed, which always gets the old ears pricked up, but the draw means he's going to need a tidy steer. Whatyoutalkinbout is the cleaner play on the map, Deeply Rooted is the one who can run on if they overcook it, and Shoot To Fame isn't the worst rough end of the stick if the race unfolds the right way. It's a pretty good final act, like the last scene in a decent crime flick where someone still gets nicked.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10 pool)

1. Whatyoutalkinbout (No.2) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet $10.00 Win, return $11.60
Prob 17.1% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 2.05x
Why Best map in the race, gets a lovely run just off the speed, and the horse is set up to take the last shot.
2. Spangledstar (No.1) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.81x
Why The firming says someone likes it, and that sort of market smoke is worth respecting. From barrier 11 he'll need the right ride, but the horse itself is dangerous.
3. Deeply Rooted (No.3) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.2% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.47x
Why Can swoop if they go too hard early, but he needs the race to melt in front of him to become a proper player.
Roughie: Shoot To Fame (No.8) — $1.16 / $1.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.35x
Why Good enough to sneak into the finish if the tempo is a menace and the leaders are breathing fire.

SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET

Quaddie (R4-7)

Smart: 1,2,4 / 1,2,8,6 / 6,2,3,5 / 2,3,8,1,9,6 (288 combos x $0.23 = $65.00) -- 23% flexi
Three open legs and one mid-fav leg means this is a proper survival ticket, not a Sunday stroll. The flexi keeps it alive, but it's still a decent little sweat with enough coverage to avoid getting mugged by one weird result.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Fernie has the army out
P J Fernie has 14 runners across the card and a stack of the key chances sit right where the race shape wants them. If he starts landing early, the rest of the day can turn into a merry old pile-on.

2 - Kalgoorlie sprints on the soft stuff favour position
In the short races, especially Races 4 and 5, you want horses that can sit handy without using the whole tank. Backmarkers need a genuine collapse to get into it, so don't go overboard on the tail-enders unless the map screams it.

3 - Spangledstar's market move is the sort of thing that makes the ears prick up
Firming from $4.40 to $3.80 is not random pub chatter. When a horse shortens into a race like this, especially with a decent form line and a leader to chase, it's worth a proper sniff.

THE DEGEN DEN

Kalgoorlie can absolutely mug you if you get greedy, so stick with the horses that can map, handle the slop, and keep finding under pressure. If the night keeps raining and the track starts to bite, the smart money is on the ones sitting close and kicking before the swoopers even get a look in. Gamble Responsibly.
