Punty's take:

Mornington on a Soft 6 is where the race turns into a chess game, but the pieces are made of glue. Leaders get first dibs because the ground is sticky and getting away clean saves everything. The flip side is that if the rain keeps creeping in, those midfield runners that can slot in and then produce a burst late become real live wires. You want horses that can hold their position, not ones that need a perfect rail run down the middle of the track like it's a TV shoot.

The big theme today is pace plus gear. You'll see a few first-time blinkers, ear muffs, and tongue ties popping up around the card. That's usually trainers saying, "Right, this one needs to focus, because it's talented enough to win if it stops being a goose." I like the races where the best speed map is paired with market respect, and I'll happily avoid the ones where the map and the price are having a disagreement.

And yeah, some of the favourites are short for a reason. But short prices on Soft 6 can still be awkward, because a single hiccup early costs them the race. That's why I'm putting a multi spine on three horses that are built for their race story, and then using roughies like spice in the curry, just enough to change the flavour.

What it means for you:

Bet like a bloke with a plan, not like a bloke swearing at the Racing Guide like it owes him money. For the sprints, chase the speed. If the race is hot and your runner is settled and waiting, you need a horse that stays travelling through the sticky section. For the middle stuff, prioritise runners that can sit within striking distance, because straight line acceleration on Soft is where the real prizes are.

Your aggressive lanes are early. Race 5 and Race 3 are where the card starts feeling like it's got a few "this is going to go close" lanes. Then you can decide if you go full chaos with quaddies and Big 6s, or if you keep it sensible and build around your Big 3. Either way, don't overthink every roughie, just make sure they have a plausible path to improving position in the last 200m.
