Rightio Loose Units, Scone on a Soft 6 with the rail +5m is one of those days where the first half of the card can make you look like a genius and the back half can mug you in the carpark. The sprints want clean maps and a bit of boot early, the middle races look like tactical crawls, and the late quaddie has enough chaos to keep the bagmen in fresh shirts all arvo.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Scone, 900m-1700m card
Rail: +5m Entire
Official going: Soft 6 (expected to play fair-to-on-pace early, with the sprint lanes doing the heavy lifting)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 19°C, humidity 73%, wind 9km/h ESE (watch for late chop and a bit of inside wear if they hammer the fence)
Early lane guess: Best ground should be midfield-to-off the rail early; in the short races, being handy and not getting bailed up is gold
Tempo profile: Two proper speed tests early, then a couple of crawls in the middle, before the final two turn into full-blown pub brawls
Jockeys to follow:
Aaron Bullock — keeps popping up on live chances and knows how to nick a race when the map gives him a sniff
Mitchell Bell — sitting on a stack of key rides and dangerous when the tempo is genuine
Christian Reith — the type who won’t panic when the race gets ugly and the gaps start opening late
Stables to respect:
S I Singleton (6 runners) — has a big hand in the meeting and a few of the day’s major players
Brett & Georgie Cavanough (4 runners) — honest, well-placed team with a couple of genuine map horses
K A Lees (4 runners) — got live chances in the fillies/mares and the market has already noticed
Punty's take:
This card feels like a split personality job. Races 1 and 2 are little speed-and-position auditions, then Race 3 and Race 4 slow right down and turn into patience tests — the kind where one bad steer and you’re cooked. After that it gets properly messy. Race 5 is a solid old 1100m drag race, Race 6 looks like a slog where fitness and a sensible ride matter more than raw class, and the last two are open enough to make a bloke reach for the strong beer.
The track setup says don’t get cute with backmarkers in the short stuff unless they’re genuinely above these. Soft 6, rail out 5m, and a few races with not much pressure on paper usually means the on-speed horses get first crack. But once the surface chops up a touch, the lanes can open and the right swooper can absolutely mug a few sleepwalkers. That’s the Scone special: one minute you’re on the rail, next minute you’re looking for daylight like you’re in a bloody Jason Bourne film.
The money is already sniffing around a few of them too. Some are being backed like they’ve got the deed to the joint, others are drifting like they’ve been forgotten in the paddock. That’s where today gets tasty — follow the map when the form supports it, but don’t swallow every shortener just because the tote’s had a sneaky snack.
What it means for you:
I’d be leaning into the races where the map is clean and the pace picture is obvious. Race 1, Race 2, and Race 5 are the sorts of sprints where barrier position and early speed can do the talking. Race 4 is a maiden where the best horse still looks the best horse, but you want to protect around the edges because these young ones can do dumb stuff.
The quaddie legs are where you need to pick your battles. The early one is bankable enough to play small and enjoy the ride, but the main quaddie is a proper chaos sandwich — if you’re playing that, treat it like entertainment with a chance, not a retirement plan. The value is in the place and each-way shapes more than blind win snipes. That’s how you stop the bank from getting belted like a pinata at a six-year-old’s birthday.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Microgravity (Race 3, No.7) — $2.15
Why He’s the one with the tactical edge in a race that should be run to suit the class horses, and the market’s not giving him enough respect for a bloke that’s put his hand up in the right form lines.
2 - Leovanni (Race 4, No.6) — $2.85
Why Honest mare, right kind of race, and she’s the one most likely to put herself in the right spot while the others are mucking around looking for a rhythm.
3 - Iron Fury (Race 5, No.1) — $2.83
Why Good old solid sort in a race where maps matter, and if he lands in the first wave he’s got the sort of grind that can make the others chase him all the way home.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~17.33 = ~$173.32 collect
Race 1 – Upper Hunter Country Boosted Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo. It’s a small field and the speed map says the first horse to settle comfortably could get away with murder.
Punty read:
This is the kind of race where the favourite’s got the right shape on paper, but maiden 1000s at Scone can still get weird if they jump a bit lopsided. Oakfield Missouri is the one the market’s eyeballing, and for good reason — the blinkers/tongue tie/ear muffs combo screams “we’re trying to switch the lights on here”. Spellecast has excuses in the book and should be in it a long way if he doesn’t get dragged into traffic. Flaunter is the sort of runner who can stalk the speed and pounce if the front end walks it.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15 pool)
1. Oakfield Missouri (No.2) — $2.33 / $1.32
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$24.00
Prob 28.8% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.83x
Why He’s the one with the market behind him and the gear tweak suggests the stable wants him switched on from the jump. In a slow-run maiden, that can be enough to get the job done if he holds a spot.
2. Spellecast (No.3) — $3.22 / $1.65
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 24.4% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.75x
Why Excuses last time, enough ability to threaten, but with only two places paid in this field he’s a “right there, but not enough” kind of play.
3. Flaunter (No.7) — $4.40 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.4% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.93x
Why Maps okay, has a sniff if the top pair jam up, but you’re not paying for the privilege in a skinny little maiden like this.
Roughie: Thirty Degrees (No.4) — $11.00 / $4.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 0.72x
Why Big gear shuffle, but the form is ordinary enough that he needs the race to fall in his lap. A bit of a hail-mary if the leaders cook each other.
Race 2 – Newgate Hcp (C1)
Race type: Class 1, 900m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed. Third Base wants the front, but the map says he’s got company and this could get spicy from the jump.
Punty read:
This is a proper speed reel, mate. Sobek looks the horse to beat off the one good run and a map that lets him park close without doing too much work. Third Base has the rail and the obvious leadership role, but the market’s not exactly throwing pies at him for fun — he’ll need to hold the tempo together. Olufsen has been crunched in betting and that’s usually not for decoration; the ride and the draw are part of the story. Bent As Hell is the sneaky one if the leaders go too hard and start waving the white flag.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15 pool)
1. Sobek (No.5) — $1.90 / $1.25
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$18.00
Prob 44.2% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.05x
Why The one-run wonder has stamped himself as the solid anchor, and in a hot little sprint like this he gets every chance to sit in the right part of the race and finish the job.
2. Third Base (No.2) — $2.46 / $1.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.4% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.60x
Why Barrier helps and he can roll forward, but the trainer form at the track is nothing to write home about and the map says he’s likely to be in the firing line for all the wrong reasons.
3. Olufsen (No.1) — $10.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.61x
Why He’s been heavily backed and you can see why — the last-start effort had excuses and the support says somebody thinks he’s ready to lob at a price.
Roughie: Bent As Hell (No.4) — $11.50 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.5% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.52x
Why If the speed duel gets too hot and the front pair soften each other up, he’s the one who can sneak into the picture late.
Race 3 – Darley Plate (C1)
Race type: Class 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo. The speed map screams sit-and-sprint, and that’s usually where the race turns into a chess match with hoofs.
Punty read:
This one is all about patience, not panic. Microgravity is the short-priced talent but he’s not getting a free ride — the back end of the field can suddenly look dangerous if the tempo keeps dawdling. Dunstall The Gun is the grinder who’s been knocking on the door and the market’s had a nibble. Sweet Justice is the juicy one; the form says he’s better than the price, and if they crawl early he’ll be dangerous late. Grande Diablo is the roughie that can lunge into the frame if the leaders turn it into a stop-start crookery fest.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.50 pool)
1. Microgravity (No.7) — $2.15 / $1.25
Bet $7.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.00
Prob 29.2% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.82x
Why Best horse in the race on recent evidence and the kind of type who can still get there even when the race shape is a bit messy.
2. Dunstall The Gun (No.1) — $3.08 / $1.35
Bet $8.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$2.98
Prob 17.7% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.71x
Why He’s been firming and for good reason — decent form, decent map, and the sort of horse who’ll keep finding under pressure.
3. Sweet Justice (No.9) — $9.90 / $2.70
Bet $3.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$5.10
Prob 15.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 2.01x
Why The market’s had a look but hasn’t fully cottoned on yet. If this turns into a crawl-and-sprint job, he’s the one that can flash late and make a mess of the result.
Roughie: Grande Diablo (No.5) — $14.75 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.88x
Why Needs the race to fall apart a touch, but if the tempo stays a jog and the leaders have nothing left, he can be the one finishing over the top.
Race 4 – The Mayor's Gallop Mdn Hcp
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo again. This is another sit-and-pounce affair where the right horse can stalk and swat them.
Punty read:
Leovanni looks the safest horse in the race, which is handy because maidens can be a circus. She’s got the consistency and the right sort of recent form to sit handy and be in the finish. Astound Beauty is the reliable place play — barrier one, honest enough, and the stable knows how to place them. Serious Jewel has had support and the blinkers go on, which says the yard wants improvement right now. Immortal Rose is the roughie with the freshest legs and some genuine upside if the spell’s done her good.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.50 pool)
1. Leovanni (No.6) — $2.85 / $1.30
Bet $9.00 Win, return $25.65
Prob 32.4% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 1.11x
Why Honest as a plumber’s invoice and twice as dependable. She maps well, has the right pattern for a race like this, and looks the one they all have to beat.
2. Astound Beauty (No.5) — $4.70 / $1.65
Bet $8.50 Place, return $14.02
Prob 15.7% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.68x
Why She’s the kind of mare who keeps putting herself there and doesn’t need the race shape to be perfect to run a drum.
3. Serious Jewel (No.10) — $3.58 / $1.40
Bet $3.00 Place, return $4.20
Prob 14.0% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.85x
Why Blinkers on, market firming, and the stable clearly thinks she’s ready to lift. If she steps cleanly, she’s right in the mix.
Roughie: Immortal Rose (No.12) — $9.90 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.20x
Why Long break, but she’s got enough ability to upset the locals if she’s come back with the right head on.
Race 5 – Pryde's Easifeeds Hcp (C1)
Race type: Class 1, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo. The leaders should get their shot, but the race still looks live enough for a horse sitting just behind them.
Punty read:
This is one of those races where the early pressure is real without being insane, so you want the horse that can sit in the first wave and keep rolling. Iron Fury gets that nod — solid, battle-hardened, and the map doesn’t ask him to do anything stupid. Copperline has been backed like a horse with a mission, and you can see the logic: he’ll get the chance to control things if the others hand him the keys. Too Darn Finesse is the old reliable. Sukida and Great Heights are the two that can make a mess of the result if the speed cooks the front end.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15 pool)
1. Iron Fury (No.1) — $2.83 / $1.50
Bet $15.00 Win, return $42.45
Prob 24.5% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 0.87x
Why He’s the straight shooter. Handy map, tidy form, and the sort of runner who can keep finding when the others start coughing.
2. Copperline (No.2) — $3.95 / $2.00
Bet $5.00 Place, return $10.00
Prob 17.5% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.87x
Why He’s been smashed in betting and deserves respect, but with the shape of the race you don’t want to get over-sentimental about a shortie that might have to spend a bit of petrol.
3. Too Darn Finesse (No.5) — $4.50 / $2.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.5% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.99x
Why Honest type who’ll be thereabouts, but this is more a race to let the top two do the heavy lifting.
Roughie: Ring My Bell (No.9) — $17.50 / $5.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.2% | Place: 28.4% | Value: 1.14x
Why Needs a bit to go right, but if the leaders overcook the first half and the race opens up, he’s the one sneaking into the exotics late.
Race 6 – Muswellbrook Ford (Bm58)
Race type: Benchmark 58, 1700m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo. Fitness, position, and not getting buried on the fence will matter more than bravado.
Punty read:
This is the sort of race where the front runners often look great at the 600 and then suddenly remember they’ve got to stay 1700m on Soft 6 ground. Ocean Tsunami has the right overall profile and enough class to be the one they catch, while Saintly Sands keeps doing the job and the market’s been all over her. Autumn Heir is the value runner in the field — if the race turns into a proper grind, he’s the one who can pick them up late. Zou Big Boy is the roughie with the map to land in a good spot if the others hand him a breather.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17 pool)
1. Ocean Tsunami (No.4) — $2.42 / $1.30
Bet $7.00 Win, return $16.94
Prob 24.4% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 0.77x
Why He’s the class horse with enough of a map to keep himself out of trouble, and in this sort of low-key staying race that can be half the battle.
2. Saintly Sands (No.5) — $2.98 / $1.35
Bet $10.00 Place, return $13.50
Prob 17.5% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.68x
Why The mare keeps turning up and the money’s come, so you’d be a brave bastard to fight the market and not take the safe path with her.
3. Autumn Heir (No.6) — $8.55 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 1.72x
Why He’s the live one at a price if they go nowhere early and the race turns into a stamina test, but the place line is just a touch too skinny for the bet.
Roughie: Zou Big Boy (No.2) — $13.50 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.74x
Why If he gets an economical run from the draw and the tempo stays soft, he can hold a spot and stick around longer than the market expects.
Race 7 – Arrowfield (Bm82)
Race type: Benchmark 82, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo. The pace is on, the pressure’s real, and the race should give everyone a chance to show their cards.
Punty read:
This is a proper throw-the-kitchen-sink sprint. Hellcibell is the one the model wants on top, even with a tricky map, because her overall profile is strong and this is the sort of race where class can still trump the perfect run. Tough Guy is rock solid and the best “get it done” type in the field. Not Written Off has been crunched and that kind of late support in a race like this usually isn’t just for a laugh. Wave Breaker is the smoky with the big drift attached — that’s a bit of a head-scratcher, but he’s the one that could make the frame if the tempo melts the leaders.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15 pool)
1. Hellcibell (No.2) — $3.62 / $1.45
Bet $11.00 Each Way ($5.50W + $5.50P), return $19.91 (wins) / $7.97 (places)
Prob 16.9% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.79x
Why She’s the horse with the best blend of class and consistency in a race full of blokes waving their arms around. If she gets a tolerable run, she’s right in the frame.
2. Tough Guy (No.5) — $4.60 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.8% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.00x
Why Tough, honest, and more than capable of soaking up pressure. He’s the sort of horse that can run a cheeky race without needing the stars to align.
3. Not Written Off (No.6) — $4.50 / $1.75
Bet $4.00 Place, return $7.00
Prob 16.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.95x
Why The market’s had a squeeze and for good reason — he’s the one who can sit handy and keep grinding when the speed starts to bite.
Roughie: Up The Front (No.10) — $9.35 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.6% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.16x
Why If the leaders go troppo and the race stretches out late, he’s the one who can wind up and clutter the finish.
Race 8 – Horse Capital Country Boosted (Bm58)
Race type: Benchmark 58, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo. Plenty want to be part of it, which means there should be a real test from the jump.
Punty read:
This is the chaos special. Jason Darren is the one the market has to respect, and the model likes him because he’s a proper on-speed player in a race where position matters. Ode So Much has been backed and looks one of the better value runners in the field; he’s the sort who can sit close and punch on. Magurtz is the sticky one — not for me at the price, but still a live piece of the puzzle. Extreme Merger is the roughie, though he’s drifting like a barge and that’s usually a sign you keep one eye on him and the other on the exits. Pepperina is the one the punters have latched onto, so don’t be shocked if he goes close to running a cheeky one.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13 pool)
1. Jason Darren (No.1) — $7.55 / $2.40
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), return $49.07 (wins) / $15.60 (places)
Prob 14.3% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.43x
Why Maps handy, brings a stack of place appeal, and in a race with this much noise he’s the one who can keep it simple and get the last say.
2. Ode So Much (No.5) — $7.05 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.33x
Why Been firming and it makes sense — he’s got the right kind of form and can camp just off the speed and be dangerous late.
3. Magurtz (No.6) — $4.15 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.79x
Why He’s not without a chance, but the price says no thanks. Needs the right run and a few better-fancied ones to make mistakes.
Roughie: Extreme Merger (No.3) — $11.50 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.38x
Why If he can slot in and the race gets messy enough for the leaders to stagger, he’s the one who can pick up the pieces, but the drift is a fair old warning label.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
Early Quaddie (R1-4)
Smart: 2,3,7 / 5,2,1 / 7,1,9,5 / 6,5,10,12 (144 combos x $0.14 = $20.00) -- 14% flexi
Three tight legs to start, then Race 3 and Race 4 open the lid a bit. It’s a banker-heavy ticket, so the payout is only worthwhile if one of the middle races throws up a sting.
Quaddie (R5-8)
Smart: 2,5,1 / 4,5,6,2 / 2,5,6,10 / 5,6,1,3 (192 combos x $0.13 = $25.00) -- 13% flexi
This is a proper survival ticket: one clean leg, one messy leg, and two races that can absolutely knock you out if you get too cute. Entertainment with a chance, but not one for the faint-hearted.
Big 6 (R3-8)
Smart: 7 / 6 / 1 / 4 / 2 / 1 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2.00) -- 200% flexi
This is basically the skinny version for the sickos who want the spine only. Tiny outlay, massive prayer, and if the rougher races go sideways you’ll be staring at the ceiling wondering why you got greedy.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Scone sprints and position
On Soft 6 ground with the rail out, the short races can punish slow starters hard. If a horse doesn’t jump cleanly in Race 1, Race 2, Race 5 or Race 7, it can be all over quicker than a bad sequel.
2 - The market is telling a story
Oakfield Missouri, Blanks, Copperline, Sukida, Saintly Sands and Pepperina all got serious money. When the tote starts leaning that hard and the form supports it, it’s usually not random. The drifters — D'oro Choice, Wave Breaker and Ardonaugh especially — are the ones to treat like they’ve got a storm cloud over them.
3 - Roughie graveyard warning
The $20-$50 roughie lane has been a coffin for punters historically, so don’t go hunting ghosts there just because the price looks sexy. If you want a sneaky blowout, keep it to horses with a real map or a real excuse, not a random dart in the dark.
THE LOOSE UNIT LOUNGE
If the map holds early, the on-speed brigade can make today look easy. If the soft ground starts chewing up the inside and the tempo collapses in the middle races, the swoopers can get a slice of the pie late and make the day ugly for the favourites. Back the horses that can put themselves in the race, keep the dreamers honest, and don’t get seduced by every drift or shortener like a mug in a poker room. Gamble Responsibly.
