Rightio Loose Units, Tamworth on a Soft 6 with the heavens twitching, it's the kind of day where you either snag the finish with skill… or get absolutely steamed by a horse you swore was a chance last week.

2 hours out and my brain's already doing laps. This track loves forward position when it's holding moisture, so I'm leaning into pace maps and "can they actually handle it" soft-track profiles. The rail's +3m from 1000m to 350m, true remainder, so expect the outside to be a bit of a battle for some stalkers, then late runners to suddenly find extra petrol if the race goes gooey. And with showers forecast, you've got to respect the ones that have shown they can cope with this sort of grip.

Now the spine. Race 4, Race 5, Race 6 are your backbone races, and the Big 3 Multi is built off the three most likely winners when everything goes right. After that, it's chaos control, not chaos worship. Let's run it race by race, like we're speedrunning a pub argument.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Official going: Soft 6 (expected to play closer to a touch-on speed, but keep your eyes wide open for late swoopers)

Tempo profile: Slow pace on most maps, so if the leaders kick early, the finish will be the real boss fight

Ben Looker: Maps and rides the pace well, and he keeps showing up at the business end.
Kody Nestor: Often turns up with a plan and the horses look switched on early in the meet.
Jake Pracey-Holmes: When the race shape suits, he gets them to the right spot and doesn't panic.
Stables to respect:
Stirling Osland (5 runners): Consistent prep patterns, and when their horses drift less than others, they usually pay their way.
Brett Robb (3 runners): Loves the on-pace style, especially when the track holds.
Sally Torrens (3 runners): Quietly dangerous with maidens and horses finding the right gear mix.

Punty's take: Tamworth is a "don't overthink it, but do think" track today. Soft 6 with showers in the air means horses that can hold onto momentum through the middle are gold, and the ones that need everything perfect can get stuffed in the mud. Pace is the cheat code, because with slow early sections, the distance from 400m to the line feels like it grows every time you're off the bridle.

Race 4 and 5 are the classic lead-in-your-seat watch, maiden and C1 respectively. You can almost hear the nags saying "come on then" at the turn. In Race 4, I'm backing Puissance Power to put herself in the race, not just arrive at it. In Race 5, Always A Rainbow looks like the type to control the tempo and stop the train before it picks up speed.

Then Race 6 is the money swing. Tough Guy and Micro Mikki are built for this sort of sprint rhythm, and the pace should let the better-fitter get the breaks rather than getting stuck in traffic. If you're chasing one race to get serious with your mates, make it Race 6.

What it means for you: Bet like the track is going to stay sticky, because the rails, the Soft 6, and the showers all point that way. Be aggressive with the on-pace and stalker types early, then use your roughies where the price makes sense for an upset if the speed collapses.

My game plan today is simple: lock the Big 3 Multi spine, back the Top 3 in each race for the structure, then sprinkle one roughie where the wet-track profile and gear change give you a live excuse for the outsider to run through the line like it's still pretending to be a roughie.

And yeah, I know, you want fireworks. Just do it with purpose, not vibes.

These are the three bets the day leans on.

Why Maps to the right part of the track, and the Soft 6 suits the way he powers through.

2 - Tough Guy (Race 6, No.5) — $2.00
Why He's the pocket-rocket type that loves this short-course rhythm, and he can win without needing a dream run.

3 - Always A Rainbow (Race 5, No.2) — $3.30
Why Genuine pace angle lines up, and once he balances up he's hard to get past.

Map & tempo: Slow Pace, Proper Twelve and Immortal Rose are the early "pressure points" (pace advantaged types)
Punty read: This is a midfield chess match on a Soft 6, and 1600m means positions matter more than drama. Boncapo (No.1) draws in a spot where she can stalk without being trapped, and her recent run style screams "I'll be there when the others start carrying the track." Almanzas (No.3) is the classic danger, because on soft he tends to keep finding something. But the real value angle I love is Sanbina, because she's built to travel and then grab a lane when the pack strings out.

Punty read: This one's all about who can keep making ground when the pace stays ordinary. Heapy's Legacy (No.8) is the one I'm putting in the spotlight, because her whole race is "stay in touch, then improve." Calzino (No.6) is short odds-ish and can absolutely win if the tempo stays kind, but I don't love how much market has forced the price earlier. Lone Star Dream (No.9) is more of a "run the race right" type rather than a slam dunk.

Mongolian Master (No.4) is the trouble-maker, and if the blinkers on him sharpen the focus, he can zip through late.

Puissance Power (No.4) is the obvious map meet, he's the one that can stalk just off the speed and then keep going when the rest start bending. Side Quest (No.12) is a value poke if she can find a lane, Tralee (No.13) is the consistent sort that can run into the placings if the race gets a bit stretched.

Fire 'n' Stone (No.3) is the danger who can grab a spot and pounce, and Jenni La Rock (No.5) is the trier that keeps running at the end even when it's annoying.

Capsity (No.4) is the value swing for the quaddie lanes, because if the pace is proper and she's in the right spot, she can absolutely figure in the top end.

Punty's take: Quaddie lane is entertainment, but there's a reason it's shaped like this, R4 and R6 anchor, R5 and R7 are where you pray for clean running and the right tempo.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - The Soft 6 play is "keep the rhythm"
When showers threaten, horses that stay efficient from mid-race to the line have the best look. That's why Race 6 Tough Guy and Race 5 Always A Rainbow are my spine, they don't need a perfect miracle run.

2 - Market support is screaming "watch the leaders" in sprinting class
On Race 7, Enniroc's price is where it should be for a short course, so don't overthink it. In these 1000m Hcaps, when the market says they've got speed, the finish usually punishes the ones stuck mid-traffic.

3 - My favourite chaos lever is a gear change
Mongolian Master in Race 3 has blinkers first time and the market is letting him drift, that's a classic "if they focus, he can run through late" setup.

I've seen Soft 6 races turn into absolute car crashes, so I'm not asking you to get lucky, I'm asking you to back horses that handle the mud with their attitude intact.
