Twenty-four runners, 3200m, over ten million in prize money, and the horse we rate best is still a long way from likely. Welcome to the Cup.

The Melbourne Cup is a 3200m handicap for three-year-olds and up, worth $10,200,000 this year, run in showers on a Good 4 track with the rail out 3m for the whole circuit. A 24-horse handicap is built to level the field, and it does exactly that. Even the best horse in it is a modest chance, so the real job is finding where the market has priced something wrongly.

We make No.20 Point Of Law the most likely winner at 14.9%, a fair price of $6.71 against a market price of $7.60. That's an edge of +13.3%. He's lightly raced, he's drawn nicely in barrier 9, and he's well weighted at 53kg. He's also never run 3200m, and he's a leader in a race where five horses map to lead. Most likely winner and bargain are different things, and here we think he's both, but only just.

The bigger overlay is No.24 Shockletz. We make him 12.9%, fair $7.76, and the market has him at $11.50, an edge of +48.2%. He carries just 51kg, settles near last, and gets a genuine tempo to run into. He's our best value and our danger, and we're comfortable saying both about the same horse.

Ciaron Maher has 7 runners, the biggest team in the race, and they include our top two. Joseph O'Brien has 5, and Chris Waller has 2. Numbers in a field this size help a stable more than any single horse.

Punty Says

  • Most likely winner: #20 Point Of Law (14.9%, fair $6.71)
  • Best value: #24 Shockletz (12.9%, fair $7.76)
  • Danger: #24 Shockletz (12.9%, fair $7.76)
  • Big-price bastard we don't want knocking us out: #10 Goodie Two Shoes (4.5%, fair $22.17)

A positive edge is not automatically a bet. Punty's actual bets come from the tips card.

How Punty Gets There

Start with Point Of Law. We make him 14.9%, so the fair price is $6.71. The market is $7.60, and with the bookmaker margin stripped out it implies 12.7%. That's an edge of +13.3%, and we'd call him value at $7.80 or better. Our numbers like his light weight, his unbeaten-at-the-trip-we-know-of profile (he hasn't been to 3200m, so that part is a guess), and his first-up and second-up record. They don't love the fact that his speed map is contested.

Then Shockletz. We make him 12.9%, fair $7.76, against a market of $11.50 and an implied 8.4%. That's an edge of +48.2%, the biggest of any runner in the top few. We'd call him value at $9.00 or better. A value runner isn't a likely winner, though. He's still more likely to lose than win, and a good price on a loser is still a loser.

The book is 103.3%, which means the bookmakers are carving out their cut across all 24 runners. Every price in the market is a little shorter than it should be, so our edges are measured after that margin has been removed.

How This Thing Probably Unfolds

Five runners map to lead: No.6 Enfjaar, No.8 Wine Dark Sea, No.10 Goodie Two Shoes, No.19 Kizlyar and No.20 Point Of Law. That's a contested lead in a race that is already a staying test, so we expect a solid tempo rather than a dawdle. Our map doesn't find a runner clearly suited by the expected pace, and the leaders are the ones it likes least.

The draw makes it messier. Wine Dark Sea (barrier 23), Goodie Two Shoes (barrier 19) and Kizlyar (barrier 20) all have to work to cross from out wide, and Royal Supremacy (barrier 21) has to do the same from the on-pace group. Enfjaar from barrier 8 and Point Of Law from barrier 9 have the cleanest runs to the front of that group. If the wide ones push to cross, the leaders will go quicker than anybody wants.

A genuine tempo over 3200m helps horses settling back. The back group is No.3 Knight's Choice, No.4 Middle Earth, No.9 Asterix, No.13 Onesmoothoperator, No.14 Soul Of Spain, No.21 Strictly Business, No.23 Zakouma and Shockletz. Shockletz is the one that has to find cover from barrier 17, and Vauban from barrier 22 is in the same boat. Four runners have an unclear map: No.1 Sons And Lovers, No.2 Trustyourinstinct, No.12 Hopewell Rock and No.18 James J Braddock, all overseas-trained, so we can't say where they'll settle. If the tempo collapses and nobody pushes, the leaders and on-pacers get a free ride and the backmarkers are in trouble. We'd rate that the less likely outcome.

The Race Has Seen Some Shit

The first Melbourne Cup was run on Thursday 7 November 1861 with 17 starters, and Archer won it. Archer also won the second one, in 1862. Makybe Diva remains the only horse to win three Cups, in 2003, 2004 and 2005. The race record is 3:16.30, set by Kingston Rule in 1990, and Bart Cummings trained a record 12 winners, the last of them Viewed in 2008.

The race was run over two miles until 1972, when it became 3200m with metrication, about 18.688m shorter. Prize money was $10,000,000 in 2025, up from $8,560,000 in 2024.

Six of the last 10 winners carried 53kg or less. That's an INTERESTING pattern, n=10, count=6. The mechanism is real: a light weight helps over a long trip. But most of the field is lightly weighted too, and 10 runnings is a small sample, so it's a lean, not a rule.

None of the 9 winners with a sourced Australian starting price started shorter than eight bucks. That's INTERESTING, n=9, count=0. The mechanism is that fields of 22-24 in a handicap spread the win chances, so short-priced winners are rare. It's backed up by the fact that only one favourite won in the 20 runnings to 2025.

Four of the 6 winners with a confirmed barrier drew 12 or wider, in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. That's a PUB STAT, n=6, count=4, and a sample that small can't tell us anything about the draw. Verry Elleegant in 2021 was the first horse in 161 runnings to win from barrier 18, which says the extremes are hard to win from rather than that the wide ones are blessed.

Joseph O'Brien trained 2 of the last 10 winners, Rekindling in 2017 and Twilight Payment in 2020. That's another PUB STAT, n=10, count=2. Mark Zahra rode back-to-back winners in 2022 and 2023.

Full race history →

What Does Any of That Mean This Year?

The weight pattern points at five runners carrying 53kg or less: Point Of Law at 53kg, Strictly Business at 53kg, Mr Monaco at 52.5kg, Zakouma at 52kg and Shockletz at 51kg. Six of the last 10 winners came from that bracket, but it's an INTERESTING pattern with 10 runnings behind it, and a handicap by design puts plenty of horses there. Our numbers already account for weight, and two of those five are our top two, so we're not adding a bonus on top.

The starting price pattern cuts against our top pick. Point Of Law is priced shorter than any of the 9 sourced winners started. That's n=9, so it's a caution rather than a verdict. Our edge on him is +13.3%, but if you think a short-priced Cup horse is a bad bet in principle, the history gives you a reason to wince.

The barrier pattern is a PUB STAT on n=6, and we won't build a view on it. Point Of Law is in barrier 9 and Shockletz in barrier 17, so they're on either side of the line and our map already prices the draw.

Joseph O'Brien has 5 runners this year: No.1 Sons And Lovers, No.2 Trustyourinstinct, No.10 Goodie Two Shoes, No.18 James J Braddock and No.19 Kizlyar. His two winners in the last 10 are a nice story and not a prediction. Mark Zahra's run of back-to-back wins is the same, and he rides Middle Earth, who has to improve a long way on his recent form. Knight's Choice, last year's winner at long odds, is back, and our numbers give him little chance.

The raw market adds up to 103.3%, not 100%: that extra is the bookmaker's margin. Market % is each runner's implied chance (1 / odds) with that margin removed, so it compares fairly with Punty %. Edge is market odds against Punty's fair odds.

Sons And Lovers comes from Joseph O'Brien's Irish string with a good record on the Good track, 2 wins from 10 starts, but only 1 start at the distance, so the trip is a question. His last run was a second at Leopardstown in Group 3 company, and before that he won a Group 2 at Longchamp over 2800m, so the stamina is plausible. We can't say where he'll settle in this field, because overseas form gives us no settling position. Winkers and equicast first time is a gear change we can't read. We make him 4.8%, a fair price of $20.70 against $21.00, an edge of +1.4%. A rough chance with some upside.

The market likes him, with a market price of $8.80 and an implied 11.0%. We make him just 4.2%, fair $23.98, so the edge is -63.3%, which is the worst of any runner in the race. He's drawn barrier 18, the map is unclear, and he drops 4.5kg in weight from his recent runs. Good horse. We think the price has already done the work for him.

Knight's Choice won this race last year and is back at long odds. The problem is the form since. His last four starts have been a 14th in the Caulfield Cup (excused by a slow start and the track), a third in a Group 2, a ninth and a twelfth. He's drawn barrier 2, settles back, and carries 56.5kg. Anything can happen in a 24-horse field, and he has shown that at this track and trip. We make him 1.4%, fair $71.94, against $60.00, and call that fair.

James J Braddock is drawn the widest of all in barrier 24, and has had just 7 career starts. He was third in the Epsom Derby and sixth in the Irish Derby, a stronger background than most. Craig Williams, who won the Cup in 2019, takes the ride. Ear muffs are a first-time gear change. The map is unclear. We make him 4.7%, fair $21.19, market $20.00, an edge of -5.6%. An unknown, and that's fine.

Kizlyar won an Ascot Handicap over about 4000m, so stamina is not his question. His last run was an 11th at Flemington over 2500m, and he's drawn barrier 20 with a lead to chase. Winkers first time is a change we can't read. We make him 2.2%, fair $46.30, market $46.00.

Profile: Leads · Light weight · Unproven at the trip

Point Of Law is our most likely winner. We make him 14.9%, a fair price of $6.71, against a market of $7.60. That's an edge of +13.3%, and we'd call him value at $7.80 or better. He's won 3 of his 5 starts (n=5, so a small sample), all on good tracks, and he comes in off a Geelong Group 3 win over 2400m 12 days ago in which he was keen. Barrier 9 is a decent draw for a leader, and 53kg is a useful weight. The questions are real. He has never run 3200m, he's a leader in a race with five of them, the gear change (lugging bit off, standard bit on) is another unknown, and the history says no winner has started this short. The most likely winner can still be a poor bet. We think he's a fair one.

Strictly Business has been slow away in recent runs and finished last at Flemington in a Group 2 over 2500m, beaten 14 lengths. He's drawn barrier 4 and carries 53kg, but the form is a long way off. We make him 0.9%, fair $117.65, market $130.00, an edge of +10.5%. It's a big price for a horse who needs a lot to go right.

Mr Monaco was third at Flemington in a Group 2 over 2500m last start, beaten 0.8 of a length, after winning a Group 3 over 2520m. He carries only 52.5kg, which fits the light-weight pattern, and he's drawn barrier 16. We make him 3.5%, fair $28.74, against $27.00, an edge of -6.1%. A fair exotics chance.

Profile: Back · Very light weight · Best value

Shockletz is our best value and our danger. We make him 12.9%, fair $7.76, against a market price of $11.50, an edge of +48.2%, and we'd call him value at $9.00 or better. He carries 51kg, a seven-kilo drop from earlier runs, and the weight is a real asset over 3200m. He was second at Flemington last start over 2040m, beaten 0.5 of a length, and he won a Flemington Group 3 over 2500m in September. He settles near the back and has to find cover from barrier 17, which is the risk. A genuine tempo suits him, and our map expects one with five leaders. He's a Maher runner, one of 7. A value runner isn't a likely winner, and he's still more likely to lose than win.

Punty says: CHANCEVALUE

If the Track Changes

The track is rated Good 4, with showers about and the rail out 3m for the whole circuit. A few showers can soften a track quickly at Flemington, so we'd treat Good 4 as a starting point and not a certainty. Our numbers assume the track stays roughly where it is. If it goes properly soft, the horses with proven wet form, like Vauban on his record in the soft, come into play, and the ones who haven't been on a wet track get a question they haven't answered. The rail out for the whole circuit also means more room on the turn and a little more ground for those wide.

Punty's Final Word

1. #20 Point Of Law

Most likely winner at 14.9%, and still value at $7.80 or better. Never run 3200m, and that's the whole risk.

2. #24 Shockletz

Best value in the race. 51kg, a genuine tempo to run into, and an edge of +48.2%. Value is not the same as likely.

3. #10 Goodie Two Shoes

Our roughie. Second in this race last year, and the market is $30.00 against our $22.17.

4. #11 Juja Kibo

Real chance, thin edge, no bet on the card. We'd want $13.50 to get interested.

Questions

What distance is the Melbourne Cup?

The Melbourne Cup is run over 3200m at Flemington. It was run over two miles until 1972, when it became 3200m with metrication, about 18.688m shorter.

Who does Punty rate the most likely winner of the 2026 Melbourne Cup?

No.20 Point Of Law. We make him 14.9%, a fair price of $6.71, against a market price of $7.60. He's lightly raced and has never run 3200m, so the trip is an open question.

Who is the best value runner in the 2026 Melbourne Cup?

No.24 Shockletz. We make him 12.9%, a fair price of $7.76, against $11.50 in the market, an edge of +48.2%. He carries 51kg and settles back, so he's our danger as well.

Does the favourite usually win the Melbourne Cup?

Rarely. Only one favourite won in the 20 runnings to 2025. None of the 9 winners with a sourced Australian starting price started shorter than eight bucks, though that's a small sample.

Does weight matter in the Melbourne Cup?

It's a handicap, so the handicapper sets the weights on ability. Six of the last 10 winners carried 53kg or less, an INTERESTING pattern on a small sample of 10, and one our numbers already allow for.
