Rightio Degenerates, Flemington on a Good 4 with the rail out 3m and showers coming through, and the speed map has more drama than a Carlton trivia night. Ten races, 165 runners, nine scratchings, and the pace shape changes almost every race, so read the map before you touch a ticket. Grab a coffee, you'll need the full read.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Flemington, 1000m to 3200m card
Rail: Out 3m Entire Circuit
Official going: Good 4 (nil rainfall last 24 hours, 11.8mm last 7 days)
Weather: Showers, live gusts 33.3km/h, rain risk 80%+ at 11:00, 14:00, 17:00 and 20:00
Early lane guess: Unknown pre-race, watch the first two.
Tempo profile: Race 1 slow, Races 2, 3, 8 and 10 genuine, Races 5, 6 and 9 moderate, Races 4 and 7 hot. The hot races are where the leaders get cooked.
Jockeys to follow:
Ben Melham: Seven rides, with Funded in Race 1, Tavi Time in Race 6 and Ranarsson in Race 8, the 2.25 elect who runs the card's cleanest pace setup.
James Mc Donald: Six rides, and he has the Race 2 favourite Chispa, our staked pick. Chispa's combo with C J Waller reads 21.6% from 2555 rides.
Blake Shinn: Six rides, including Star Of Macedon in Race 3 and Porter in Race 10, so he's on both ends of the card.
Stables to respect:
C Maher (22 runners): The biggest stable on the card by a mile. Point Of Law in Race 7, Barracks in Race 8 and Mr Monaco in Race 7 are all in the mix, so the sheer numbers matter.
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (6): Ranarsson in Race 8, Fringilla in Race 3 and La La Lilly in Race 1 are all in their boxes, and La La Lilly's trainer T-HOT rating is 22.0% over the last 100.
G Waterhouse & A Bott (6): Harry Lime in Race 8 has blinkers on first time and the market has cut him from $19.00 to $10.00, so these blokes are worth watching.

Punty's take: Race 1 is a slow-run sprint where Royal Press is the only horse that maps to find the front from barrier 9, so the speed is light and the race will be decided by who gets a clear run late. Race 2 has one leader in Mr O'reilly and a genuine pace, which hands the stalkers and closers a proper go. Race 3 looks like a Mister Whiskers outing, with Star Of Macedon from back and Fringilla on the speed, so it's a two-horse fight for the top of the market. Race 4 is the chaos race of the day: six horses want the front, and at least four of them have to work from wide barriers to get there.

Race 5 and Race 6 are the moderate ones where the pace is a bit of a fudge, so the horses with the best finishing kick and the cleanest runs win. Race 7 is the Melbourne Cup and it's hot up the front with five leaders, so the horse who can sit a few lengths off the speed in a 3200m rat race is the one to respect. Race 8 is the banker of the day, with Ranarsson leading uncontested from barrier 6 and the map helping him. Race 9 is the most open of the afternoon, and Race 10 is the stayer's race where Buccleuch's map factor is the best on the card.

What it means for you: Be aggressive on Race 8 and Race 6 because those two shapes set up for the horses we've staked, and both have the best value on the card in the win market. Protect your bankroll in Race 4 and Race 7, where the speed is contested and the price tags are all over the shop, so keep the stakes small and let the exotics do the heavy lifting if you want to chase. Race 9 and Race 2 are the open races where a roughie can wander home, so spread your numbers if you're a fan of the long shot. The Big 3 holds the day together, but never bet the house on one race result.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Sabaj (Race 6, No.4) — $2.78
Why Short price, but the win market has him at a big percentage of the field and he's already got a first-up record of 4:2-0-0 to back up the pace. Moderate pace, nobody screaming to the front, and he's been the fastest over the last 400 on the watch.
2 - Ranarsson (Race 8, No.5) — $2.25
Why Leads uncontested from barrier 6 in a genuine pace race with the map helping him, and both his starts this preparation have been wins at Cranbourne. The market has firmed him from $2.65 to $2.25, so the money agrees.
3 - Buccleuch (Race 10, No.1) — $3.95
Why Midfield in a genuine pace that the map favours, and his distance record of 9 starts for 5 wins and a second, with 5 wins from 9 at the trip, makes him the most complete horse in the race. Last start was a win at Caulfield over 1440m.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 24.71 = $247.10

Race 1 – Darley Maribyrnong Plate

Race type: Open, 1000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on paper, and nobody maps to lead, so Royal Press from barrier 9 is the likeliest to take the front. He's drawn wide so he has to work to cross, which is the reason the shape is against him. Amelia's Affair and Funded are both midfield types who'll sit off the speed and look to pounce at the 200m if the race stays soft. The slow pace hurts the ones who need to be on the speed, so the key question is whether Royal Press can grab an uncontested lead without burning himself out early.
Punty read: Royal Press is the bet, from barrier 9 he's the one who'll go to the front, and his fastest last 400 on the sectionals is the reason I'm happy to have him at $3.80. The shape is against him, but his last start was a close second at Caulfield over 1000m, beaten only 0.1L, so he's not a horse who goes backwards at the finish. Amelia's Affair is the danger from the tail of the field, with Damian Lane riding him and ear muffs going on first time. Funded has been backed from $7.00 down to $6.20, which tells you the money likes him, but I can't see a clear pace path for him. La La Lilly is the roughie, with ear muffs and lugging bit both on first time and the Hayes stable running hot at the moment.

Top 3 + Roughie ($11.50 pool)

1. Royal Press (No.1) — $3.80 / $1.50
Bet $11.50 Each Way ($5.75W + $5.75P), collects $30.48 if it wins ($21.85 win + $8.63 place), $8.63 if it only places
Prob 21.2% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.81x Steady since tip
Why Speed rank 1 and the fastest over the last 400 in the sectionals. Last start second at Caulfield over 1000m, beaten 0.1L. Slow pace suits a horse who can be out in front, and Jye McNeil has the ride from barrier 9.
2. Amelia's Affair (No.6) — $7.20 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.18x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Funded (No.7) — $6.20 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.94x Steady since tip
Why Ben Melham on a stable running at 17.6% at the track. Market has come from $7.00 to $6.20, which is money coming, but the slow pace doesn't do him any favours.

Roughie: La La Lilly (No.8) — $12.50 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.12x Steady since tip
Why Ear muffs and lugging bit both go on first time, and the stable is T-HOT over the last 100 at 22.0%. The price has drifted from $6.50 to $12.50 and I can't see why in the data, so a place bet at $2.55 is the way to get a piece of the action.

Race 2 – Pin & Win Community (Bm80)

Race type: Benchmark 80, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Mr O'reilly as the only leader, and he's drawn barrier 8, so nobody can take the front off him. Yauson from barrier 20 and Pariah Pearl from barrier 13 are the nearest pressure, and both have to get to the fence fast. The back of the field has a lot of runners drawn wide, so the stalkers from midfield look like they'll get the best run. Mr O'reilly sits uncontested and the map hurts him (0.84), so he's the danger if the pace stays soft.
Punty read: Chispa is the bet, and that's because the pace map is against him but his form and the jockey combo carry the day. He settles back from barrier 2, which means he'll have to work for the trail, but his last two runs were in the 8th and 11th positions over longer trips and he's had a bad run of luck. The Mc Donald and Waller combo is strong and Chispa's sectionals at 600m and 400m both rank 2 on the card. Yauson at $3.30 is the one most punters will want, but he's drawn 20 and has to work from the outside. Ichnusa is the back-half runner who'll get the cover, and Politely Dun is the roughie who can pinch it if the leader collapses.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Chispa (No.10) — $7.40 / $2.50
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), collects $51.98 if it wins ($38.85 win + $13.13 place), $13.13 if it only places
Prob 13.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why Sectionals rank 2 over both 600m and 400m. James Mc Donald is J-HOT at this track at 21.8% over 6868 rides and the combo with C J Waller is 21.6% from 2555. Chispa has run 2 wins from 10 starts so the class is there, and 4kg up from last start is a fair weight rise for a horse best at lighter weights.
2. Yauson (No.13) — $3.30 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.35x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Ichnusa (No.14) — $10.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 33.2% | Value: 1.02x Steady since tip
Why Back of the field from barrier 19, so he needs the pace to be genuine. Sectionals over 600m and 400m both rank fastest on the card and the Stockdale pairing with C Maher gets him over the trip.

Roughie: Politely Dun (No.5) — $11.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.4% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Dropped out to 2000m from 1800m-ish form, and the market has come from $9.00 to $11.00 drifting. Last start second at Caulfield over 2000m, beaten 0.3L, and he's bolted into the field if the speed collapses into a sprint finish.

Race 3 – TAB One Pool Trophy

Race type: Open, 1800m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Mister Whiskers as the only leader, from barrier 1, and the map hurts him (0.82) because nothing else wants the front. Gilgeous from barrier 6 has the best map factor on the card (1.12) and wants to sit handy. Fringilla and Waiheke Rose are the forward runners who'll be jostling for the second and third spot, while Star Of Macedon and Katoto are the closers who'll need the speed to fall apart up front. The shape is against Star Of Macedon, which is why it's worth a second look at the price.
Punty read: Star Of Macedon is the bet because he's the one horse who can run them down if the front pair get tired, and his sectionals are fastest over 600m and the time is fastest. He's from the back, the shape is against him and the price is short, but last start sixth at Caulfield over 1400m doesn't tell the whole story when you read his form. Fringilla is the danger on the speed with Craig Williams riding and the Hayes stable T-HOT, and Katoto from barrier 9 is the one closer who could steal it. Mister Whiskers has the leader's run but the map hurts him, so he's a roughie who needs the field to be asleep.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Star Of Macedon (No.2) — $3.80 / $1.55
Bet $7.50 Win, return $28.50
Prob 20.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Fastest over 600m and fastest on time in the sectionals. Back from barrier 5 with a genuine pace on, and Blake Shinn gets him into the race at the right time. The market has come from $5.00 to $3.75, which is good money coming.
2. Fringilla (No.8) — $5.20 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.00x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Katoto (No.6) — $6.40 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.15x Steady since tip
Why Sectionals rank 2 over 400m and James Mc Donald has been hot on this barrier draw. Market from $9.00 to $6.40, so it's money coming for the closer, and last start was a fifth at Caulfield over 1440m.

Roughie: Mister Whiskers (No.1) — $9.20 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.5% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.59x Steady since tip
Why He has the leader's run from barrier 1 and two wins from two starts, and if the field goes slow he's gone. Jett Stanley has a J-HOT rating over the last 100 and the market has drifted from $5.50 to $9.20, so he's a fair sized roughie.

Race 4 – The Schweppervescence Plate

Race type: Open, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot pace with six horses mapping to lead, and they're all over the front half of the draw. Ole Go from barrier 13, Splendacious from barrier 12 and Gin Twist from barrier 14 are all drawn wide, so they have to fight to get to the fence. Semantics from barrier 1 and Fovea from barrier 2 have the inside, and they'll be the ones who get the cleanest run. The shape is against the leaders (0.84) but the field is so loaded with speed that someone is going to have to take a beating from the others.
Punty read: Ole Go is the bet because he's a leader who's got the form to hold on, and the market has him at $6.20. His first-up record is 2:2-0-0 and the last start was a win at Morphettville 1050m, a G4 finish over 1.7L. The shape is against him, but he's a horse who'll be happy to lead and he's 4kg lighter than last start. Semantics from the inside barrier is the danger, with Ethan Brown riding and Michael Dee on Parcae. Fovea gets the inside draw and the trainer is T-HOT, while Parcae is the roughie who can pick them up if the leaders go too hard.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)

1. Ole Go (No.3) — $6.20 / $2.25
Bet $12.00 Each Way ($6.00W + $6.00P), collects $50.70 if it wins ($37.20 win + $13.50 place), $13.50 if it only places
Prob 16.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.03x Steady since tip
Why First-up record 2:2-0-0, and last start a win at Morphettville 1050m. Sectionals rank 2 over 400m. He's 4kg lighter than last start, so the weight is in his favour.
2. Semantics (No.11) — $9.20 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.8% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.99x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Fovea (No.13) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.55x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 2 and a leader with a win at Kembla Grange over 1000m last start prep. Cross-over nose band goes on first time and the trainer is T-HOT over the last 100 rides.

Roughie: Parcae (No.12) — $11.50 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 32.6% | Value: 1.01x Steady since tip
Why Two wins from two starts, and the path to victory is a hot pace collapsing in front of him so he can run down the leaders. Mornington and Seymour form both show wins over 1000m.

Race 5 – Australian Heritage Cup (Bm96)

Race type: Benchmark 96, 2800m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with no clear leader, so the front will be fought over by Sam Hawkens from barrier 17, Sir Chartwell from barrier 13 and Autumnheat from barrier 5. The trip is a staying one and the pace is moderate enough to let the closers get into it. Highland Bling and Autumnheat are the ones helped by the shape, while Sir Chartwell gets hurt by it. Athabascan from barrier 22 and Newfoundland from barrier 18 are the back-half runners who need the cover and the luck to make the finish.
Punty read: Tempesti is the bet because he's a horse who's been bred for this trip and wins first-up regularly, with a first-up record of 8:3-3-0. He's from barrier 6 and the shape is against him, but at 2800m a moderate pace suits the one who can settle and run. Jennivamoose at $6.50 is the danger from the back, and Grand Pierro from barrier 3 is the one to watch if the front runners fold. Athabascan is the roughie who'll come late if the trip gets tough, and Jamie Mott is riding the favourite. The market has drifted Tempesti from $4.80 to $6.50 and I can't see a clean reason in the data, but that's still a fine price for the bet.

Top 3 + Roughie ($5.00 pool)

1. Tempesti (No.4) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet $5.00 Win, return $32.50
Prob 13.4% | Place: 37.1% | Value: 0.87x Steady since tip
Why First-up record of 8 starts for 3 wins and 3 seconds, which tells you he's ready to run on fresh. Last start second at Randwick over 2600m, beaten 0.8L, and he's a staying type who gets better when the pace is moderate.
2. Jennivamoose (No.5) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Grand Pierro (No.11) — $11.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Market has come from $13.00 to $11.00 and Craig Williams gets a fair run from barrier 3. Last start fifth at Bendigo over 2400m, beaten 5.2L, so the form is solid over the trip.

Roughie: Athabascan (No.2) — $11.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.6% | Place: 24.2% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Last start was a fourth at Randwick over 2600m, bumped and hampered, so he's had excuses. He's a big-price closer from barrier 22 who needs the moderate pace to fall apart so he can get into the finish.

Race 6 – Asahi Super Dry Plate

Race type: Open, 1800m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with nobody mapping to lead. The likeliest to find the front are Al Duca from barrier 2, Immediacy from barrier 1 and Ambassadorial from barrier 7, but Wymark and Magnaspin are drawn wide and have to work to get across. Sabaj from back is the one who'll need the pace to be slow enough to run down the leaders. Al Duca and Magnaspin are the ones the shape hurts, so they're the ones to be wary of.
Punty read: Sabaj is the bet, and I've got him in the Big 3 as well. He's a shot at 2.78 with the win probability at 30.0%, and the place market is at $1.40. He's from barrier 4 and the shape is against him, but the moderate pace in an 1800m race lets a horse with a turn of foot run down the early leaders. He's got a first-up record of 2 wins from 4 and sectionals time fastest. Darkbonee is the danger at $6.40, with the Symon Wilde stable T-HOT over the last 100 rides at 20.0%. St Lawrence is the one from barrier 8 who can pick the pocket. Al Duca is the roughie who could lead the field and get a clear run if nobody wants the front.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Sabaj (No.4) — $2.78 / $1.40
Bet $7.50 Win, return $20.85
Prob 30.0% | Place: 59.4% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why First-up record of 4 starts for 2 wins, and sectionals time is fastest on the card. He's been raced wide last start at Caulfield over 1600m and the same pace hasn't suited him, so the move back to 1800m from the back is the way to go.
2. Darkbonee (No.10) — $6.40 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. St Lawrence (No.5) — $7.40 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.91x Steady since tip
Why Last start was a win at Murray Bridge over 1600m, and the market has him as a price-tag rider with James Mc Donald up. J@trk 21.8% over 6868 rides and a 24% last 100.

Roughie: Al Duca (No.6) — $9.50 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.5% | Place: 32.8% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why The likely leader from barrier 2 with a moderate pace, and the path to victory is simple: lead, look up, and run the others out of it. Damian Lane is J-HOT over the last 100 at 16.0%.

Race 7 – Lexus Melbourne Cup

Race type: Open, 3200m
Map & tempo: Hot pace with five leaders in the field, and they're all contesting the front. Enfjaar from barrier 8, Point Of Law from barrier 9 and Goodie Two Shoes from barrier 19 are the ones to watch for the early pace. Wine Dark Sea and Kizlyar come from wide draws, so they'll have to fight to hold their spot. The shape is against the leaders (0.84) and that makes the closers the ones to watch. Juja Kibo from barrier 14 and Shockletz from barrier 17 are the stalkers who'll need the speed to collapse.
Punty read: Point Of Law is the bet and he's a leader in a hot race, which is never comfortable, but the form says he can grind it out. Last start first at Geelong over 2400m, a G4 win by 0.5L, and he's won three from five at the trip. Ethan Brown rides him, and the C Maher stable is running at 15.1% at the track. Shockletz is the danger from the back, and his last start was second at Flemington over 2040m, beaten 0.5L. So You Are is the roughie who can pick up the pieces if the front five cook each other.

Top 3 + Roughie ($6.00 pool)

1. Point Of Law (No.20) — $7.60 / $2.60
Bet $6.00 Win, return $45.60
Prob 14.9% | Place: 37.4% | Value: 1.13x Steady since tip
Why Last start first at Geelong over 2400m and three wins from five starts overall. He's a leader but the form and the cool head of Ethan Brown make him the right pick. Gear change: lugging bit off first time and standard bit on first time.
2. Shockletz (No.24) — $11.50 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.9% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.48x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $3.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Juja Kibo (No.11) — $12.50 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.06x Steady since tip
Why Last start a win at Flemington over 2500m, beaten 0.5L, and the sectionals over 600m and 400m are both fastest on the card. Sam Clipperton rides and the trainer is C Maher, so the stable has the numbers.

Roughie: So You Are (No.16) — $18.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.1% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 1.09x Steady since tip
Why Three wins in a row over the last three starts, Bendigo 2400m, Randwick 2600m and Rosehill 2400m, and his path is the hot pace leaving the front five spent. Rachel King rides, and the trainer Bjorn Baker is J-HOT in the market.

Race 8 – Crown Amanda Elliott

Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Ranarsson as the only leader from barrier 6. The map helps him (1.03) and nobody is close enough to take the front off him. Barracks from barrier 11 and Our Emperor from barrier 8 are the closest pressure, but both will have to work to get into the trail. Harry Lime and Boy From Zadar are the ones the shape helps, but Harry Lime needs to get out of the midfield and Boy From Zadar is a 126.00 outsider. The field is short on speed behind the leader, so the lead is the one to back.
Punty read: Ranarsson is the bet, and he's the banker of the day for my money. Two starts this preparation, two wins at Cranbourne, the second at 1200m and the first at 1400m, and he's uncontested from barrier 6. The market has firmed from $2.65 to $2.25, which says the money agrees. Harry Lime is the danger at $10.00, with blinkers on first time and the market cutting from $19.00 to $10.00. Barracks is the one who'll sit second on the speed, and Mr Natural is the roughie who'd love the leader to stop.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Ranarsson (No.5) — $2.30 / $1.25
Bet $13.00 Win, return $29.90
Prob 28.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.66x Steady since tip
Why Two wins from two starts, both at Cranbourne, and he's the only leader in a genuine pace race. Ben Melham rides and the stable is T-HOT at 22.0% over the last 100. The map helps him and I can't find a reason to chase a bigger price.
2. Harry Lime (No.9) — $10.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.8% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.38x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.85 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Barracks (No.2) — $7.50 / $2.45

Prob 12.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why Last start fourth at Eagle Farm over 1000m, held up and hampered, and he's a 1-3-0 horse over the last starts. Ethan Brown rides and the C Maher combo is 20.2% from 416 rides.

Roughie: Merry Chase (No.12) — $15.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.1% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.07x Steady since tip
Why One start, one win at Kyneton over 1218m, and a midfield run from barrier 9. He's the roughie if the leader stops and the form is short but eye-catching.

Race 9 – The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes

Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with ten horses mapping to lead, so the front is crowded and nobody gets a free run. Stylish from barrier 5, Shadhavar from barrier 2 and Oh Too Good from barrier 3 are the likeliest to fight it out, and Betwitchery from barrier 16 has to work hard to get across. Stylish, Dance To The Boom, So You Pence and Cooly are the ones the shape helps, while Shadhavar, Betwitchery and Karren are the ones it hurts. Miss Freelove and Ruska Roma from the back will need a clean run through traffic.
Punty read: Shadhavar is the bet at $3.85 and the win probability sits at 16.4%. He's on the speed from barrier 2 and the map is against him (0.82), but he's got 7 wins from 18 starts and the distance record of 4:2-2-0 says he handles 1400m. Craig Williams and Tom Dabernig have a combo at 37.1% from 35 rides, which is the kind of stat that matters. So You Pence and Dance To The Boom are the two I'd be watching in the exotics, and Dance To The Boom is the place bet because the place price is better value than the win. Stealth Of Night is the roughie from barrier 10 with winkers off first time.

Top 3 + Roughie ($14.00 pool)

1. Shadhavar (No.2) — $3.85 / $1.60
Bet $7.00 Win, return $26.95
Prob 16.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.63x Steady since tip
Why Seven wins from 18 starts and a G4 win at Caulfield over 1400m last start. Good track record 9 starts for 5 wins, and the combo with Craig Williams is strong. The shape is against him, but the form is too good to ignore.
2. So You Pence (No.7) — $5.70 / $2.15

Prob 13.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Dance To The Boom (No.4) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet $7.00 Place, return $21.00
Prob 12.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.12x Steady since tip
Why Four wins from four distance starts at 1400m and a second at Caulfield 1100m last start. Rachel King rides and the place price is the value. The pace shape helps him.

Roughie: Stealth Of Night (No.13) — $18.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.1% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 1.10x Steady since tip
Why Winkers come off first time and the stable is T-HOT over the last 100. Last start fifth at Caulfield over 1440m, beaten 2.3L, and the price has come from $34.00 to $18.00, which is heavy money.

Race 10 – Channel 9 Trophy (Bm90)

Race type: Benchmark 90, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Porter as the only leader from barrier 7, uncontested. Keep Your Cool from barrier 8 and He'll Rip from barrier 9 are the nearest pressure, but both sit handy on the speed. Buccleuch and Itazura are the midfield runners the shape helps most, so they're in the best spot to sit the trail and pounce. Jett Smash from barrier 12 is drawn wide and has to work to cross, which is the trap.
Punty read: Buccleuch is the bet, and he's the third leg of the Big 3 as well. He's a midfield horse from barrier 4 and the map helps him (1.12), and he's won 6 of 11 career starts. His distance record of 9 starts for 5 wins says the 1400m is his trip. Last start first at Caulfield over 1440m, a G4 win by 0.8L. Billy Egan rides and the Corstens stable is T-HOT. Space Rider is the danger, with Mark Zahra riding and the place market offering value. Porter is the roughie who leads uncontested, and if the field lets him go he's the one who makes the others chase.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Buccleuch (No.1) — $4.00 / $1.72
Bet $13.00 Win, return $52.00
Prob 23.2% | Place: 60.1% | Value: 0.93x Steady since tip
Why Six wins from 11 starts and five wins from nine at 1400m. Last start first at Caulfield over 1440m, beaten 0.8L in a G4. The map helps him and his combo with Billy Egan and the trainer is strong.
2. Space Rider (No.4) — $9.50 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.04x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $3.00 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Jett Smash (No.7) — $8.00 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.8% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Four wins from eight starts and a G4 sixth at Caulfield 1440m last start. Damian Lane is on the ride and the trip suits.

Roughie: Porter (No.3) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.08x Steady since tip
Why Leads uncontested from barrier 7 in a genuine pace race and his last start was a win at Caulfield over 1440m. If the pace stays on the front, he's the one to dominate.

SEQUENCE LANES

EARLY QUADDIE (R3-R6)

Smart: 2,6,8 / 3,11,13,12 / 4,5,11 / 4,10 (72 combos x $0.4444 = $32.00) -- 44.4% flexi
Punty's take: Star Of Macedon, Fringilla and Katoto hold R3 with a bit of width, R4 and R5 are wide open, and Sabaj is the tight leg in R6. Flexi floor is 30%, and at 41.7% this is a solid play, with the risk being that two open races leave the ticket dead if the favourites fall over.

QUADDIE (R7-R10)

Smart: 20,24,11 / 5,2 / 2,7,4 / 1,3,7,4 (72 combos x $0.3472 = $25.00) -- 34.7% flexi
Punty's take: Ranarsson's leg in R8 is the only tight one, while R7 and R9 are open and R10 has Buccleuch as the banker. The flexi floor is 30%, and the payout only really pays if one of the longer prices lands in R7 or R9.

BIG 6 (R5-R10)

Smart: 4 / 4 / 20 / 5 / 2 / 1 (1 combos x $5.00 = $5.00) -- 500% flexi
Punty's take: This is an entertainment-only ticket with six legs and 3840 combos, so the flexi is tiny and the hit rate is only a few percent. Keep it to a bit of fun, because the short-priced winners rarely pay and it only pays well with a long-priced winner somewhere in R7 or R9.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Blinkers go on for Harry Lime
Blinkers go on first time for Harry Lime in Race 8, and he was eighth at Flemington over 1400m last start with a slow start to blame. The price has been cut from $19.00 to $10.00, so the money has come in for him. Watch the market.
2 - Tempesti's first-up record
Tempesti has a first-up record of 8 starts for 3 wins and 3 seconds, and he's been a horse who runs well off a fresh break. He's from the back in Race 5 and the moderate pace suits a horse who can sit and finish.
3 - Five in the Cup
Joseph O'Brien has five runners in the Lexus Melbourne Cup, which is more bets than the bloke running the office sweep. Any one of them could be the one that gets a free lift from a hot pace collapse.

THE LOOSE UNIT LOUNGE

Ranarsson leads uncontested in Race 8 and Sabaj is ready to run down a moderate pace in Race 6, so the Big 3 has a real chance. Go steady, let the racing do the talking, and remember the Melbourne Cup is a 3200m race, not a sprint to the bar.
