Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot pace on, wind helps the sprint end, positions matter from the jump
Punty read: This is a 1000m maiden where the leaders can do damage, but the straight helps runners who can sustain rather than sprint-wobble. Mr Sapphire looks like the market's "do the job" type, but I'm not ignoring Gas Station Rose. In a race with leaders and a pile of first-timers, the rider who gets into the clear lane early is going to get paid.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Gas Station Rose (No.8) — $6.50 / $2.40 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$82.50
Prob 19.2% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.82x
Why With Good 4 and a tailwind up the straight, it can keep working through the line instead of fading like a cheap magic trick.
2. Gold Bijoux (No.9) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 55.6% | Value: 1.00x
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Mr Sapphire (No.2) — $9.00 / $2.90 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.3% | Place: 54.1% | Value: 1.23x
Why Market support plus winkers first time makes it live, but I'm saving the cash for the cleaner bet.
Roughie: Jewellery Box (No.11) — $12.50 / $2.85 🏆 10TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 26.8% | Value: 1.14x
Why If this is the type to improve with a gear tweak, it just needs one of the front runners to wobble at the business end.
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, attackers can hold it together, wide runners get their chance late
Punty read: Superbec looks like the one that's ready to actually win. These 1200m maidens often boil down to who can travel without doing too much early and still sprint on. And There You Go is the sort that benefits when the race doesn't go full Tasmanian devil, and Miss Graff is the "sitting there quietly then flashing late" type.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Superbec (No.12) — $3.90 / $1.72 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$43.50
Prob 30.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.16x
Why It's the best map to grab and hold, and in a maiden it's usually the "most complete" horse that gets the job done.
2. And There You Go (No.6) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.8% | Place: 49.6% | Value: 0.79x
Why A real chance — but at $2.00 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Miss Graff (No.9) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 48.3% | Value: 0.50x
Why Might run into the placings, but I'm not sacrificing value elsewhere for a similar outcome.
Roughie: Hopeful Champion (No.8) — $10.00 / $2.75 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.7% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 0.79x
Why If the front bunch gets dragged into a slog, this can sneak into the picture off the right run.
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, chances for on-pacers to keep going, wind makes late runs harsher
Punty read: Keen Observer is wearing blinkers for a reason. 1200m maidens can go two ways: either the leaders last, or the sprint lane opens and everything comes at once. I'm betting Keen Observer knows how to be in the right spots early and then bite late.
Purgatorio is the value-looking type on a race where the top three aren't guaranteed. Egyptian Thorn can absolutely run into it too, especially if the pace doesn't totally cook.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Keen Observer (No.11) — $3.80 / $1.70 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 23.4% | Place: 65.7% | Value: 0.81x
Why Blinkers on, pace there, and it's the kind of horse that pushes forward and doesn't look back.
2. Purgatorio (No.13) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.24x
Why A real chance — but at $2.00 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Egyptian Thorn (No.5) — $4.80 / $1.95 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 47.2% | Value: 0.85x
Why Can place, can win, but I'd rather let it hit exotics underneath the main picks.
Roughie: Genomic (No.6) — $9.00 / $3.00 🏆 9TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.83x
Why Roughie path is simple, get a spot, then sprint when the gaps appear like a magician pulling cards from a hat.
Race type: Maiden, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow early, then class rises through the gears, outside chances with the wind
Punty read: 2000m at Ballarat with a slow tempo is where horses who can control balance and hit the line get you. Expensive Taste has the profile to be involved late, and I'm also watching Dr Well and Doublet because these races often get decided by who relaxes first and accelerates second.
This one is a chaos handicap-ish vibe in a maiden suit, so we take the value where it makes sense.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Expensive Taste (No.13) — $3.70 / $1.65 🏆 6TH
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 19.7% | Place: 58.4% | Value: 0.65x
Why Time-fast type with the right kind of patience for 2000m, and it should be hitting the line when others are trying to find rhythm.
2. Dr Well (No.2) — $6.00 / $2.25 🏆 9TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 48.6% | Value: 0.83x
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Doublet (No.1) — $8.00 / $2.75 🏆 11TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.4% | Place: 35.7% | Value: 1.35x
Why It's got the underlying credentials to improve late, just not my main cash.
Roughie: Guardian Detective (No.14) — $10.00 / $3.30 🏆 10TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.12x
Why If it finds clear air and the tempo stays slow enough, it can nick a piece of the prize.
Race type: BM66, 2000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, classic grind, staying power plus position = the whole game
Punty read: This is the sort of 2000m BM where your pick needs to keep coming, not just make a move. Deny Entry looks set for the right trip with the on-pace style, Stuntman is a genuine chaos runner who keeps threatening, and Melek is the sort that can keep earning checks if the race gets stretched.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Deny Entry (No.4) — $3.50 / $1.62 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P) — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 21.7% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.96x
Why On-pace, stays in the hunt, and 2000m suits horses that can grind to the line without getting lost.
2. Stuntman (No.14) — $6.00 / $2.25 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.5% | Place: 59.5% | Value: 1.41x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Melek (No.8) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.0% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.79x
Why Short enough to pressure the pace and still be there late, but value on the win isn't the play today.
Roughie: Wimmera Star (No.12) — $11.00 / $3.40 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.5% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.05x
Why Roughie job is simple, get a clean run and sprint late when the race breaks apart.
Race type: BM62, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, sprint with actual pressure, gaps matter more than vibes
Punty read: This is a proper 1000m sting. Tough Romance has the right on-pacer profile and can take a sit or press depending on what Cumboogle does early. Yolo is the danger horse if it slots in and saves ground. Ziggy Bama is the "short and pokes through" sort, but my main focus is Tough Romance because the map works and the race shape is brutal enough to make one runner stand out.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Tough Romance (No.13) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 5TH
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P) — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 19.0% | Place: 62.2% | Value: 1.15x
Why Cross-over and tongue tie first time means it should handle the intensity, and the on-pace pressure gives it a real path.
2. Yolo (No.6) — $4.80 / $1.95 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 47.2% | Value: 0.86x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Ziggy Bama (No.9) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.3% | Place: 49.8% | Value: 0.69x
Why Big place chance, but it's more of a "don't get blocked" runner than a lock.
Roughie: Dream Enuff (No.7) — $13.00 / $3.90 🏆 13TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.5% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 1.03x
Why Roughie path is the swoop, if the pace chops out earlier than expected this thing can land late with force.
Race type: BM62, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate, with a few pace angles, and the wind gives finishers a real shove
Punty read: Russian Choice is the class-ish type to build around, and it has the barrier that lets it get involved without doing gymnastics. What A Ripper is the exact style to keep chasing at the right part of the track. Bardia's Dream is the value swing, especially if the run up the rail opens late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Russian Choice (No.10) — $4.80 / $1.95 🏆 10TH
Bet $9.00 Each Way ($4.50W + $4.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$9.00
Prob 18.8% | Place: 56.7% | Value: 1.05x
Why It should sit in the right lane and grind through the finish, 1200m at Ballarat rewards that patience.
2. What A Ripper (No.13) — $6.00 / $2.25 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.7% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.71x

3. Bardia's Dream (No.8) — $7.00 / $2.25 🏆 12TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.5% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.20x
Why Value profile fits, especially if the leaders go a bit too hard early.
Roughie: Ole Royale (No.5) — $9.50 / $3.10 🏆 WINNER
Bet $6.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$12.60
Prob 9.3% | Place: 32.5% | Value: 1.00x
Why Places are the target here, because if the race gets stretched this looks like it can sneak into the top three.
Race type: Open, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, the middle of the track becomes crucial, winners often come from clean runs
Punty read: Al Duca is the one I want leading the charge. Ten Commandments is the danger with that steady pressure, and Prince Eric is the classic "works into it late, steals a spot" type. This is 1600m, so it's not just about who's fastest early, it's about who makes the right move at the right time.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Al Duca (No.2) — $4.80 / $1.95 🏆 2ND
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — Cashed, net -$0.33
Prob 29.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.17x
Why It's got the pace to hold position and the class to keep running through the line, even if the race gets busy.
2. Ten Commandments (No.6) — $4.00 / $1.75 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 26.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.94x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Prince Eric (No.13) — $11.50 / $2.90 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.36x
Why It's the value spine for place outcomes, and it can absolutely grab a spot if the leaders bunch.
Roughie: Craig (No.3) — $11.00 / $3.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.01x
Why Roughie path is the clean trip, if it gets a gap, it can run on and surprise without needing the leaders to die.
Race type: BM62, 1500m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, longer grind, position into the final turn is everything
Punty read: La Barrita is the pick that maps to be in the right part of the race at 1500m, and Notified is the valuey place option. Autumn In Grinzing is shorter priced for a reason, but I love the shape of La Barrita because it can keep taking ground without being forced to sprint too early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. La Barrita (No.5) — $4.00 / $1.72 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — ✓ Won, net +$24.18
Prob 23.0% | Place: 63.2% | Value: 1.13x
Why It can sit closer and still run the last section, 1500m at Ballarat rewards controlled aggression.
2. Autumn In Grinzing (No.7) — $3.20 / $1.55 🏆 7TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.5% | Place: 56.6% | Value: 0.62x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Notified (No.6) — $7.60 / $2.15 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.24x
Why This is the type that can slice through late for a cheeky place, especially if the tempo steadies.
Roughie: Russian Duchess (No.1) — $10.00 / $2.90 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.99x
Why Roughie path is a clean run in transit and a gap at the right moment, because 1500m gives that kind of lane.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Ballarat's running like a Friday night kebab line, quick early, then the wind starts swinging the daggers down the straight. Track's Good 4 and the rail's true entire circuit, so the whole day is about clean positions and sprinting through fatigue, not doing wheelies in the back half like a drunk toddler on a hoverboard.
I'm building my ticket around the speed maps and the way the markets are behaving. When a horse firms and the draw lines up with the running style, it's usually there for a reason. When something drifts like it's lost in the supermarket carpark, I'll treat it like a roughie, even if it looks "kinda close" on paper.
Big 3 spine is locked, multi is stitched, and then we're getting rowdy race-by-race. Let's go.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Good 4, sprint to middle distance (1000m to 2000m) card
Rail: True Entire Circuit
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play Speed vs Stamina, with closers favoured late)
Weather: Mostly sunny, 14°C, humidity 68%, moderate wind (tailwind up the straight) (watch for short sharp finishes)
Early lane guess: True, with on-pacers holding the advantage early then the outside run becomes gold late
Tempo profile: Hotter where the pace shapes are stacked, but the wind lets runners sustain longer than you'd think
Jockeys to follow:
Luke Currie: keeps getting them into the race and doesn't waste chances at the business end
Damian Lane: when the horse maps, he's the type to put it over the line instead of "almost" it
Declan Bates: steady work in the junks, and when he's on a well-timed runner, it shows
Stables to respect:
C Maher & team (multiple strong chances): they're set up for these maiden and BM targets, and they tend to hit their stride early
Henry Dwyer (handy around the money): places runners where they can run on, and he's not scared of pressure races
T & C McEvoy: if they've got gear and market support, you can hear the cheque register warming up
Punty's take:
This is a Ballarat card where the back half can absolutely threaten, but only if the pace actually gives them a chance to wind up. Wind up the straight helps the later kickers, so I'm not smashing the "leaders only" button, but I am sticking with runners who either control position or hit the line with purpose.
The market is doing a lot of the talking today. In a heap of races, the shorter-priced horses are the ones getting pushed around, which usually means the form is real and the barriers aren't a death sentence. Still, there are a couple of big "huh?" drifters that I'll treat like entertainment, because if they can win, they'll do it the hard way.
And yes, I'm going to be a bit rude about it. If you back a horse that drifted like it owes you money, you're basically donating your steak money to the booing section. We're here to eat the sanga, not watch it get served to someone else.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive early in the races where the top-end speed shapes are obvious. The leaders are giving themselves every chance on Good 4, especially with the rail true and the wind up the straight. Your job is to make sure your picks aren't stuck doing traffic management at the wrong time.
For the chaos races, don't overthink it. Take the best horse you can justify, then cover the place outcomes and the one roughie that can swoop if the speed collapses or the right runner gets a gap.
For the quaddies and Big 6, play them like fun, not like a religion. The chances are always higher when at least one or two legs look more "banker-ish" than the others. I've built the lanes to keep the ticket alive while still chasing the big dividends when the universe decides to behave.
