Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden Steeple, 3600m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, lots of backmarkers waiting for galloping space
Punty read:
This is the "hang on, then pounce" type of steeple. With the pace slow, you're basically betting on who can stay balanced in heavy and still find a run when the race starts moving. Taika is the one who has the wet staying profile and the right kind of game, while the rest are either searching for room or relying on luck getting out of the way.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Taika (No.5) — $3.10 / $1.52 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$31.50
Prob 31.1% | Place: 68.8% | Value: 1.45x
Why Fits heavy like a glove, gets the tempo, and I love the way she can just keep going without needing a perfect run every stride.
2. Star Warrior (No.10) — $6.00 / $2.40 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.52x
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. The Republican (No.11) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.69x
Why A real chance — but at $2.00 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
Roughie: Go Butch (No.3) — $9.00 / $2.90 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.9% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.58x
Why If the speed collapses and he gets a clean line, he's the one that can swoop like a villain in a Netflix episode.
Race type: Maiden Hurdle, 3100m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, backmarkers can still be live if the leaders get tired
Punty read:
On heavy with a slow tempo, the race is usually won by who doesn't fold emotionally at the three-quarter mark. Outovstock looks like she's built for exactly that grind, and Rosina is the type that can chew through tired horses and keep picking up pieces. Billy is in the mix but needs everything to go right.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Outovstock (No.2) — $3.40 / $1.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 29.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.20x
Why Settles, stays in rhythm, and the Heavy 10 read feels spot on for her style.
2. Rosina (No.12) — $4.20 / $1.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.00x

Prob 19.0% | Place: 54.2% | Value: 0.96x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
Roughie: Fleur De Champ (No.9) — $9.50 / $2.90 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.1% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.70x
Why If she finds a seam late, she can crack it. But she's more "surprise cameo" than main character.
Race type: Hurdle, 4200m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, stamina and jumping rhythm decide it
Punty read:
4200m on heavy is survival of the fittest and most cooperative. Quid is the classy type who can sit and then work into the race, and Roc Up Ralph is the sort that can run his heart out when the field starts stretching. Squire is a danger too, but I'm prioritising the ones who look like they'll actually attack the last section.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Quid (No.3) — $4.40 / $1.80 🏆 WINNER
Bet $7.50 Each Way ($3.75W + $3.75P) — ✓ Won, net +$15.75
Prob 20.8% | Place: 58.2% | Value: 1.22x
Why Heavy 4200m suits, and she can keep grinding without being asked to sprint out of trouble.
2. Squire (No.1) — $3.50 / $1.62 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.7% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.92x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Roc Up Ralph (No.4) — $6.00 / $2.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.4% | Place: 40.5% | Value: 1.16x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
Roughie: The Bambino (No.7) — $15.00 / $3.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.4% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.89x
Why If the race goes quiet early and the jumps don't bite, she can pop up like a shock result in round two.
Race type: Restricted 60, 2200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, leaders matter, set-up is real
Punty read:
This is a proper pace race, which means Carignan and Wry Smile are the ones to watch doing the heavy lifting early. Opera Belle is there if the race pattern suits, but you don't want to be too far back in these 2200m heavy grinds when the speed is actually on.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Carignan (No.5) — $2.90 / $1.45 🏆 3RD
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 26.3% | Place: 68.8% | Value: 0.98x
Why He's the on-pacer, and on heavy with genuine tempo, on-pace is king. None of that late lane hunting nonsense.
2. Wry Smile (No.2) — $5.50 / $1.95 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.88x
Why A real chance — but at $1.95 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Opera Belle (No.4) — $7.00 / $2.35 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.5% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.18x
Why A real chance — but at $2.35 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
Roughie: Middle Khan (No.6) — $11.00 / $2.90 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 1.02x
Why Needs a bit of chaos in the middle, and with heavy and pace, chaos is always lurking.
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, speed stays honest then folds the backmarkers
Punty read:
Shorter trip, more sprinting problems for Heavy 10, so you want horses that can hold their spot and not get bogged up. Foo Foo is the leader type and should get first crack, Queen Sansa can grab a piece late, and Reggae Man is the one that might out-swerve the market expectations if they get tangled.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Foo Foo (No.3) — $3.50 / $1.55 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00

Why Leader under genuine pace means she can control the rhythm and stay in it when it matters.
2. Queen Sansa (No.8) — $3.50 / $1.55 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.3% | Place: 60.9% | Value: 1.40x
Why A real chance — but at $1.55 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

Roughie: Taquile (No.9) — $12.00 / $3.10 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.35x
Why If the leaders start giving away handles, she's the sort to pounce with no warning.
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, positioning is everything on heavy
Punty read:
This is the one where the field's going to stretch, but the heavy ground means they stretch into trouble for the ones who are too far back. Time After Time looks like she has the best chance to keep finding the line. Midnight Fury is a late threat, and Rocky Balboa is right there, but Time After Time is the anchor.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Time After Time (No.6) — $3.15 / $1.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 29.2% | Place: 68.6% | Value: 1.48x

Roughie: Magee (No.4) — $10.10 / $2.90 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.93x
Why Needs a clean run and a bit of pace pressure, otherwise she gets swallowed by heavy.
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, on-pace and brave types get rewarded
Punty read:
Bm65 on heavy at 1600m is a proper test. She Suits Herself is the classy on-pacer and she's got the profile to carry speed a bit longer. Roederer is a live danger with the way the race might unfold, and Hip Flask is always one chance away from making it look easy.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. She Suits Herself (No.5) — $4.30 / $1.85 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 21.0% | Place: 56.8% | Value: 1.27x

Why A real chance — but at $2.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
Roughie: Intoxicated (No.8) — $9.90 / $3.20 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.6% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.19x
Why If the leaders get chewed up and there's room late, she can run through the gaps like a late-night plot twist.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 5,6,4 / 3,9,8,5 / 6,4,1 / 5,8,1,2 (144 combos x $0.00694 = $1.00) -- 0.69% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Taika (Race 1, No.5)✓ Won — $3.00
2 - Outovstock (Race 2, No.2) — $2.86
3 - Carignan (Race 4, No.5)✗ — $2.70

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Te Aroha is throwing a Heavy 10 hissy fit, so if your betting plan is based on "smooth sections" you can safely drive it straight into the birdcage. Big fields, churning ground, and the sort of slog where the winners feel like they're hacking through custard. Perfect. More carnage, more fun.
If you want a simple backbone: races 4 to 7 are your sequence playground, and I've got a Big 3 spine that's meant to survive the mud, the wobble, and the occasional "how the fuck did that get checked?" moment.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Te Aroha, 1600m to 3600m card
Rail: True
Official going: Heavy 10 (expected to play Slower, bumpy, stamina-biased, with on-pace still winning)
Weather: Showers (watch for slippery patches and sprinting becoming a myth)
Early lane guess: Rail might save runners from getting sucked into the deep mire
Tempo profile: Slow early, then heavy legs start getting punished late
Jockeys to follow:
Billy Marshall: good at finding the line late, especially when everyone's cartwheeling in the heavy
Jordan Hart: tends to get them travelling, then actually finishes the job
Hamish Mc Neill: when he's calm and measured, the wet ground does the rest
Stables to respect:
P Nelson & C Mcdougal (18 runners): multiple runners that handle heavy and have the right "staying game" manners
Shelley Wright (7 runners): their jumpers and hurdlers tend to be ready for the grind, not just the spectacle
G A & D G Rogerson & Clint Isdale (6 runners): steady strings that pop up in the right spots when the track is miserable
Punty's take:
Heavy 10 at Te Aroha is basically the track equivalent of watching a movie sequel you kinda like, then realising it's worse in every scene. It's slower, it's heavier, and it rewards the horses that can keep powering through. You'll see it in the rhythm, slow pace makes the contest more about position and stamina, not sprint speed.
Race 1 and 3 are your jumping meat grinder vibes. When the pace is slow, backmarkers with a clean run can swoop, but in heavy the key is avoiding being stuck behind a wall of bad luck. Race 4 to 7, that's the restricted and the middle distances, and that's where it's easier to spot who can hold a spot and who's just along for the ride.
What it means for you:
I'm leaning into the places and the "get there alive" plays early, because on Heavy 10, you can survive a lot of trouble and still run home. Then once we get to the Quaddie lanes, it's about building with horses that look like they can get the job done from their map.
Plan wise: don't overcomplicate race 4 to 7. In this weather, a clean run is a superpower. If a horse looks like it's got the run mapped, or it's got the wet form, that's where you get aggressive. The rest? Let the rough stuff earn its keep.
