Rightio Loose Units, Bathurst on a Heavy 9 is basically the horses running through a sponge cake, so if you like your racing sweet and savage, strap in. The early lanes look like they'll be doing a bit of cardio, and the ones with the map edge are gonna get first crack at doing the job before the track starts swallowing chances whole.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Heavy 9, 1200m-1400m card
Rail: +2m 1200m-350m, True Remainder
Official going: Heavy 9 (expected to play Speed vs Stamina, with on-pace horses having a proper crack)
Weather: Cloudy, 6°C, humidity 82%, wind 9km/h SE (watch for muggy hold-up sections, gusts at start time)
Early lane guess: Keep an eye on the fences at the 1200m-350m, but the Heavy 9 punishes anyone too far off the speed.

Tempo profile: Moderate to slow early, then the race becomes a grinding sprint from the 3/4 to the line, with on-pacers still charging through the mud.
Jockeys to follow:
Ms Molly Bourke: Gets on the right kind of horses for this sort of heavy grind, and she's showing up in the value conversations across the card.
Adrian Layt: When he's on, the map often comes with him, and he can push a horse into the right spot.
Clayton Gallagher: Good hands on horses that need position early, especially when the track is dead and you need a run.
Stables to respect:
G Portelli (2 runners): Both have market attention and race shapes that suit this rail and Heavy track.
N J Olive (1 runner): One of those "they're ready" type preps, especially when the horse is straight out of the gate.
M R Mulholland (2 runners): He's usually not afraid to back a horse's ability to grind through Heavy, and it's showing up in the selections.

Punty's take:

Heavy 9 at Bathurst changes the whole vibe. You can throw speed around early, sure, but the real winners are the ones who keep travelling when everyone else starts doing that desperate "please, no more mud" face. It becomes a game of positioning, timing, and whether your horse can keep doing the work after the first real hit of the track.

I'm leaning into on-pacers and those with gear upgrades, because Heavy 9 loves horses that stay switched on. In Race 1, Fawlty Affairs is set up for the job with that first-time gear, and you can feel the betting is locked on for a reason. Then Race 7 with Smichov, it's that classic "short price for a reason" type, but the value angle is that he's getting the run and not being asked to do anything stupid in the conditions.

And look, this is a meeting where Roughies can still run on, because Heavy 9 races often split late. So while we're backing the obvious in the Big 3 spine, we're also sprinkling in the ones that can swoop if the leaders get chewed up.

What it means for you:

If you're trying to play it safe, you back the horses that get the best of the track, then you protect with place. That's how you avoid the classic Heavy 9 heartbreak where a horse is doing everything right until it hits the wrong part of the sponge.

If you're feeling a bit degen, you still back the spine, but you use the Heavy angle to take a swing at one roughie in the spots where the race shape screams "late run required". That's the way you get dividends without needing a full lottery ticket attitude.

My game plan is simple, get aggressive where the map fits and the market isn't whistling past the graveyard, then keep your roughie bets aligned with where a horse can realistically win if the speed collapses. No fantasy flights. Just mud, tactics, and a bit of cheek.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Fawlty Affairs (Race 1, No.3) — $2.09
Why Maps midfield but is built for this Heavy grind with first-time gear and the kind of form that keeps showing up in the finish.

2 - Smichov (Race 7, No.2) — $3.65
Why He's got the class and positioning to keep getting involved, and the market's clearly not dreaming with this one.

3 - Daylite (Race 6, No.11) — $3.25
Why Heavy 9 suits the grinder, and the place profile is huge, with the win chance there if the race turns into a stay-on game.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~25 = ~$250 collect

Race 1 – Foggy Fawlty Kingdom

Race type: MAIDEN HCP, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Fawlty Affairs sits the right sort of midpack trip, then grinds when it matters.

Punty read: Heavy 9 at 1200m is basically about who can remain calm when the track starts stealing rhythm. Fawlty Affairs has that first-time tongue tie and crossover nose band combo, and with him sitting in the midfield lane on a map, he can stalk without wasting petrol. Puissance Power looks like a reasonable early presence too, but the big danger is when the track forces everyone to travel wider and lose ground late. That's where a horse like Fawlty Affairs can just keep doing the same job, again and again, like a service station attendant refusing to clock off.

Top 3 + Roughie ($25.00 pool)

1. Fawlty Affairs (No.3) — $2.09 / $1.09
Bet $19.00 Win, return $39.71
Prob 40.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.15x
Why First-time gear for a midfield grinder on a Heavy 9, and he's the one that looks like he can keep finding when others get choked.

2. Puissance Power (No.5) — $4.30 / $1.55
Bet $6.00 Place, return $9.30
Prob 16.0% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.76x
Why On-pace enough to be dangerous in the slog, plus all those gear tweaks suggest they want him switched on right now.

3. Cool Aza Dude (No.2) — $6.20 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.04x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Roughie: Forgive Me Father (No.6) — $10.10 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.5% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.24x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Race 2 – The Maiden Mirage

Race type: MAIDEN HCP, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace on, so if you're too far back on Heavy 9 you'll be doing the walk of shame.

Punty read: This is a pacey race on paper, but Heavy 9 makes pace expensive. Celestial Grace has the market on her side and draws in, which matters because on a day like this, saving ground is king. Three Wishes looks like the one who can take the race by the scruff, but with the way the tempo is lining up, it's the runner who balances both position and acceleration who wins.

Celestial Grace strikes me as the safer bet for the win, while Three Wishes is the place leverage play where she gets a perfect run and keeps powering through the mud.

Top 3 + Roughie ($25.00 pool)

1. Celestial Grace (No.2) — $3.85 / $1.57
Bet $16.50 Win, return $63.52
Prob 22.1% | Place: 58.2% | Value: 1.35x
Why Drawn well, strong Heavy profile, and the stable has her targeted for a genuine run at the finish.

2. Three Wishes (No.1) — $6.75 / $2.10
Bet $8.50 Place, return $17.85
Prob 16.8% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.44x
Why With blinkers on, she's built to sharpen up and hang on in heavy conditions where others tire early.

3. Maysun (No.5) — $5.10 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.84x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Roughie: Alideel (No.8) — $16.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.2% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.58x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Race 3 – C1 Chaos at 1200

Race type: CLASS 1 HCP, 1200m
Map & tempo: On-pace city, One Run Won can land forward and keep grinding while the backmarkers do extra work.

Punty read: C1 at 1200 on Heavy 9 is where the honest runners get paid. One Run Won has that blinkers upgrade and is close enough to the speed that he can attack rather than chase. Gem Tycoon is the looming danger as he's drawn wide but has the kind of recent form that says he can do his part.

The one I'm trusting most is One Run Won. He looks like the type that doesn't mind when the race becomes a wrestling match in the final 300.

Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)

1. One Run Won (No.3) — $4.10 / $1.70
Bet $6.00 Win, return $24.60
Prob 23.8% | Place: 61.2% | Value: 1.29x
Why Blinkers on, forward map, and even in Heavy, he's the one that keeps doing his job to the line.

2. Nafanua (No.6) — $3.75 / $1.65
Bet $2.50 Place, return $4.12
Prob 15.4% | Place: 48.9% | Value: 0.77x
Why Distance fit and he's on the right side of the tempo, but you're really using him as the place insurance.

3. Gem Tycoon (No.4) — $5.60 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.04x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Roughie: Demmo Dermy (No.2) — $9.15 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.8% | Place: 34.8% | Value: 1.31x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Race 4 – Benchmark Grind, 2000m Edition

Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, but the Heavy 9 forces everyone to manage energy, Italus and pals are the ones who get to take the first hit.

Punty read: 2000m is where Heavy tracks turn into a stamina test with a dash of panic. Italus is the speed pillar, and with that map advantage he can keep the race honest early. Unmatched is the second string danger, because if the leaders take too long to settle and the track rides awkward, he's the sort that can roll forward and keep coming.

Green Pineapple is there too, but the smarter play is backing the ones that are positioned to do the work first, rather than asking to be brave from too far back.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Italus (No.4) — $4.10 / $1.75
Bet $7.50 Each Way ($3.75W + $3.75P), return $15.37 (wins) / $6.56 (places)
Prob 20.2% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.10x
Why Heavy 9 and 2000m, he's got the lead job and the place profile is solid.

2. Unmatched (No.7) — $6.20 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.22x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.

3. Green Pineapple (No.11) — $4.60 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 57.0% | Value: 0.89x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Roughie: It Is To Be (No.3) — $11.50 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.1% | Place: 21.4% | Value: 0.93x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Race 5 – 1100m, Big Switch Energy

Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1100m
Map & tempo: Speed is there, but with Heavy 9, it's about who can keep the motor going, Flywire and Street Parade can pick up if the leaders wobble.

Punty read: This one's a proper "who's still galloping at the line" race. Jagerschnitzel is the logical leader, but I'm not ignoring Flywire at all. Flywire has that value signal and is the kind that can be in the right spot and keep coming even when the ground turns sticky.

Street Parade is also live, because the way these tracks sap early speed, a horse with the right run can absolutely show up late. The Roughie Torendosetta is there as a confidence play if the race gets messy.

Top 3 + Roughie ($3.50 pool)

1. Jagerschnitzel (No.5) — $3.35 / $1.57
Bet $3.50 Win, return $11.72
Prob 17.5% | Place: 55.8% | Value: 0.76x
Why Short price for a reason, and the map says he'll be hard to run down.

2. Flywire (No.8) — $7.20 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.27x
Why A real chance — but at $2.45 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.

3. Street Parade (No.1) — $6.75 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.5% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.10x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Roughie: Torendosetta (No.3) — $9.20 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.99x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Race 6 – Maiden Plate, 1400m Slog

Race type: MAIDEN, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace expected, so the ones that can stay switching and roll over late are the danger.

Punty read: Slow pace on Heavy 9 is where you see horses starting to walk, then suddenly sprinting because everyone else is cooked. Daylite is the pick because he's got that winning profile plus a place chance that's doing a lot of heavy lifting. Samoan Roman is the value-ish place play, and when the race turns into a grinder, these types can slot in and keep grinding.

Litlfela looks tempting at odds, but I'd rather keep the bet simple and back the ones that match how this track actually runs its race, not how it looks on a clean card.

Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)

1. Daylite (No.11) — $3.25 / $1.55
Bet $20.00 Win, return $65.00
Prob 23.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.02x
Why Heavy 9 at 1400 rewards the steady worker, and Daylite is built for exactly that grind.

2. Samoan Roman (No.12) — $3.25 / $1.55
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.20
Prob 17.4% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.23x
Why Strong place angle if the pace stays slow and the race becomes a late-run contest.

3. Litlfela (No.2) — $6.20 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.3% | Place: 37.6% | Value: 0.62x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Roughie: Step Quick (No.3) — $9.25 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.86x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Race 7 – Benchmark 58, 1400m Heat Check

Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, Smichov and the midpackers can stalk, and the Heavy 9 lets the best positioned runners keep going.

Punty read: 1400m on Heavy 9 is where the start matters less than the first proper bend, everyone's figuring out who's travelling by then. Smichov looks like the one that can keep showing up in the placings and make it a real fight for the win, while Tommy Flyer is there for the straight push forward.

Let Up is the classic "small chance, could get the right run" type, and Not Mee is your roughie in a race where late runs can still bite if the pace doesn't stick properly.

Top 3 + Roughie ($25.00 pool)

1. Smichov (No.2) — $3.65 / $1.65
Bet $21.00 Win, return $76.65
Prob 24.4% | Place: 67.7% | Value: 1.38x
Why Smichov maps right, draws decent, and in these conditions a horse that can stay involved keeps turning up.

2. Tommy Flyer (No.1) — $3.06 / $2.00
Bet $4.00 Place, return $8.00
Prob 20.2% | Place: 57.7% | Value: 0.96x
Why Forward enough to be dangerous early, but he's more for place insurance in case the race shape swings.

3. Let Up (No.9) — $3.06 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 0.50x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

Roughie: Not Mee (No.10) — $12.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.7% | Place: 21.1% | Value: 1.06x
Why Place prob too low (28% < 30%).

SEQUENCE LANES

Quaddie (R4-R7)

Smart: 11,4,7,3 / 5,1,8,3 / 11,12,2,3 / 2,1,9,10 (256 combos x $0.10 = $25.00) -- 10% flexi
Punty's take: Four legs, three open-style legs with enough spread to make it fun, but this is still a risky quaddie because Heavy loves chaos.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Heavy 9 punishes "late lanes" more than you think
At 1200m-1400m, even if a horse looks like it should swoop, the Heavy often makes the ground loss too costly. That is why the on-pacers and midfield stalkers keep grabbing your top spots.

2 - First-time gear is doing work today
Across the card, the horses with gear coming on are the ones that line up with better positioning. Heavy 9 is where gear changes can actually show, because it affects concentration and appetite for the slog.

3 - When the market firms, it usually means "run into traffic"
You'll notice the shorter prices are the ones that can control their spot. In Heavy 9, being able to hold position is half the race, not an afterthought.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Alright legends, if Bathurst is going to be a swamp, we might as well bet like it. Lock in the Big 3 spine, sprinkle the rest where the map actually makes sense, and when the track chews someone up, you'll be holding the right ticket in your hand.

Gamble Responsibly.
