Punty's take: Soft 6 at Scone is all about timing. The early speed still matters, but you can't just bank on the front running, because the cut up in the track means everyone starts living off each other's sweat. Watch for leaders that can sustain a position, not just a quick dash.

Race 1 looks like a straight up "get on the speed or get stuck" affair at 1100m. Yeah Buddy should get a run, and from there it's about who can actually handle the kick and the ground. If the rain comes late, wide runners are more likely to be running on late rather than sprinting clear early.

Then we've got a proper spine for the day, Race 3 and Race 5 in particular. Feazabeel and Oakfield Iowa both look like they've got the right profile for Soft 6 and these distances, and when the market says they're in the right spots, I'm listening. Quaddie time starts at Race 4, and that's where it gets spicy, because everything in that middle chunk can change shape from one held-up moment.

What it means for you: Be aggressive early where the maps line up, then protect your arse in the middle when the track starts swallowing clear runs. I'm betting to win on the short priced types that can control position, and I'm using place leverage in the places where a wide or traffic jam can still leave you holding a live ticket.

For exotics, keep it lane-based. Races 4 to 7 are your Quaddie playground, but you want structure. The Wide Open leg is always the one that burns everyone's bankroll, so I'm sizing the damage and keeping the legs that are tight enough to stand up.

Why Comes out of the gate with intent, sits in the right part of the speed map, and Soft 6 rewards that.

2 - Feazabeel (Race 3, No.1) — $1.62
Why This looks like the "doesn't need everything to go right" type, built for the Scone 1700m grind.

3 - Oakfield Iowa (Race 5, No.2) — $1.92
Why Proven enough to back on a Soft track, and the blinkers angle should help him take control at the business end.

Map & tempo: Slow pace, speed lanes matter early, late running is king once the ground gets stingy
Punty read: Yeah Buddy looks the one who can do the job early without getting bullied by the Soft 6. Barrier 6 is workable, and with the tempo projected slow, he gets every chance to hold a position instead of doing heroics. Lope De Luna is the danger if he steps out sharp and lands midfield, but the race story is basically about whether the front third can stop fading. If Little Bubbles does it tough again from wide, she can still farm places, but winning from there on a day like this is asking a bit.

Punty read: This is a right old sprint poker game at 900m. Sir Boom A Lot is the class map play, he's likely to hold the front and not get run over too soon. Rallet is the danger type, comes in with that class spike and with Mitchell Bell on board you can bet he'll be there to pounce. Excels looks like the one the market respects for a place, but I'm not forcing it for a win with the tempo still so sharp and the field so likely to tighten.

Questionable and Yorikiri are the types that can slot into the finish, but the story wants a horse that can manage the kick and survive the longer trip.

Vittozzi is the short price and Haras is the type that can get rolling late, but Iron Fury looks like the one who can keep going through the middle without needing a perfect run. Soft 6 at 1200m means a lot of horses get tagged and then just can't finish off the same way. If you want a stable cue, Iron Fury's the sort that suits when the track is playing unfair.

Switch On is coming in late and can absolutely pinch a slice if he lands in the right spot, but 1300m on Soft means the leaders get challenged and midfield runners can get held up. Sparkling Fire is a leader, so he's got every chance to hang on for a place, but I'm backing the one that looks set to run the whole race, Oakfield Iowa.

Where the market's tightening (like the Race 1 favourite), it usually means the rider is getting the position with intent, not just vibes.

3 - 1700m on Soft is where the "stays composed" horses get greedy
Feazabeel and that whole Race 3 setup is the kind of profile that wins when everyone else is busy surviving the conditions.
