Rightio Loose Units, Bathurst is running a Soft 6, the rail's True, and the wind's got that 'whoa hang on, hold my beer' look about it, so expect races that get messy in the last 200m and punish the fakers.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Bathurst, 1200-2000m card
Rail: True
Official going: Soft 5 (updated from Soft 6) (expected to play Speed vs Fight Through it)
Weather: Overcast (watch for gusts and wet-footing, soft conditions bring the "save ground is life" crowd)
Early lane guess: sticky lanes, but wide in the straight can still get involved if it's not too busy
Tempo profile: Slow early, then it turns into a survival mission late, especially around the 1200s
Jockeys to follow:
Deon Le Roux: gets into it, and he's riding enough today to be a genuine pace player
Mikayla Weir: can park and pounce, plus she's got the soft-track appetite
Jess Del Frari: one of those finish-at-all-costs riders, great when gaps appear late
Stables to respect:
Connie Greig (4 runners): sneaky chances sprinkled through the card, often better than the first glance
G McFarlane (4 runners): has that "ready to roll" look in these lower grades
N J Olive (4 runners): values patience, then lands late when the race shape favours them

Punty's take:

This is a Bathurst card where the soft ground turns 1200m races into a think-along-the-way trial. With rail True, you'll see a lot of horses get brave early, then the straight comes and the tired ones start doing the tango. In this kind of meeting, I want either a horse that can hold its position without getting shuffled, or a runner that can sit a touch closer and pounce when the pack breathes out.

The pace maps are the real story tonight. You've got a couple of races that are built for leaders to survive, and a few where the speed collapses into chaos. That means I'm leaning into the same spine across the day, My Boy Scout into Mi Piace into Prefer Diamonds, then sprinkling value where the market is doing that thing where it thinks it's safe, then the track says "mate, nah."

Also, keep an eye on the gear moves and the market drama. When a horse gets a first-time gear change and the price stays put, I'm more interested. When a horse drifts hard, it can still be a roughie winner, but I want the run-style and map to back it up, not vibes.

What it means for you:

Bet like the track is going to make you earn it. In the tight races, back the map and stick to the top end. In the open races, do not get sentimental, take the widest lane to value and let the day be what it is. The safest approach is to anchor the Big 3, then build exotics with horses that either lead, sit right on top of the leaders, or have sectionals that scream "I'll be running at the finish".

My aggression plan: go in hard early with the 1400m maiden shape and back the forward-ish types where the pace is slow and the late sprint matters. Then in the middle of the card, treat the 1200s like short films, start strong, and don't overthink it. By Race 6, I'm back on the horse that looks built for the track conditions and race shape, and I'm not apologising for being boring when the winner's there.

Now let's get stuck in.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - My Boy Scout (Race 4, No.3) — $2.60
Why Maps to the front end and gets a soft-ground run style that stays alive in a class one dogfight.

2 - Mi Piace (Race 3, No.4) — $2.40
Why On-pace profile with the best combo of form and conditions, and he looks the sort to run through the line.

3 - Prefer Diamonds (Race 6, No.7) — $3.80
Why Built for this slow tempo grind, plus the market has been chewing it up for a reason.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~24 = ~$240 collect

Race 1 – Slow-Burn Maiden Mayhem

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with a bunch backing up in midpack before the real sprint hits the line

Punty read:

This one's a classic Bathurst maiden script, slow early, then suddenly everyone remembers the race is happening. Hellfire Henry (No.2) is drawn handy and doesn't need to be a hero, just needs a smooth trip and a turn of foot. Spud Gun (No.7) is the type who benefits if the speed is tempered and the leaders get wrestled for position, he's got the right "run on" setup. Amahtrom (No.9) is the quiet menace because in a slow-shape 1400, the ones near the back can still be first on the bit when the pack fans out.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Hellfire Henry (No.2) — $3.60 / $1.55
Bet $13.00 Win, return $46.80
Prob 23.9% | Place: 59.4% | Value: 1.33x ▲3% since tip
Why Barrier 3, midfield map, and the "bumped then okay" story fits a soft 1400 where trips get messy.

2. Spud Gun (No.7) — $5.00 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.1% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.32x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Amahtrom (No.9) — $4.40 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.42x ▲2% since tip
Why Backmarker map on paper, but soft conditions usually reward the ones who can keep momentum and get a gap.

Roughie: Chrislyn (No.5) — $20.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.3% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.85x ▲5% since tip
Why Roughie path is if a bunch fail to handle the soft shuffle and the market overrates the obvious types.

Race 2 – Hot Pace Hotter Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, leaders engaged early, this is where good jumpers get rewarded

Punty read:

Dwight (No.1) is the leader and this race shape is basically built for that. Diamond Dice (No.10) is the other big piece, also on-pace and likely to park close enough to benefit from a speed-fuelled run. Apiarist (No.7) is the price oddball in the top three thoughts, but her map says she can sit midfield and grab the right slice late if the leaders flatten.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Dwight (No.1) — $3.30 / $1.35
Bet $15.00 Win, return $49.50
Prob 24.9% | Place: 61.7% | Value: 0.76x ▼6% since tip
Why Draw 5 and genuine pace in front, that combination is how you survive the soft 1100 grind.

2. Diamond Dice (No.10) — $3.30 / $1.37
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.4% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.74x ▲9% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.37 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Apiarist (No.7) — $3.90 / $1.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 55.1% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why If traffic gets thick mid-race, she can sneak through late and pick up a generous enough gap.

Roughie: Danleo (No.9) — $9.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.9% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.14x ▲44% since tip
Why Roughie wins if the field compresses and he gets the run behind the right speed and then finds extra.

Race 3 – 1200m Newmarket Jenga

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, pace advantaged runners can stick close while others chase a late gap

Punty read:

This is Mi Piace (No.4) being the obvious forward anchor. He's on pace, and in a soft 1200, that often means you're not stuck three-wide with no cover, you get a clean run and you keep going. De Razilly (No.2) looks the perfect pressure-on type, he can sit closer and make it uncomfortable. Orchid Boy (No.5) is the pocket rocket for the top three mix, the one who can run into the money if the race doesn't fall apart too early.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Mi Piace (No.4) — $2.45 / $1.22
Bet $15.00 Win, return $36.75
Prob 29.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.31x ▲2% since tip
Why Barrier 1 and on-pace profile, if he gets a rhythm, he's hard to run down late.

2. De Razilly (No.2) — $3.40 / $1.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.7% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.50x ▼3% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.50 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Orchid Boy (No.5) — $5.50 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.07x Steady since tip
Why Soft deck helps runners who can keep their legs under them, he should be finishing.

Roughie: The Fire Inside (No.9) — $12.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.47x ▲18% since tip
Why Roughie path is late acceleration from midfield if the on-pace brigade clumps up and slows.

Race 4 – Class 1, No Mercy

Race type: Class 1, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and the on-pace types get every chance to stick around for the jump

Punty read:

My Boy Scout (No.3) is the main attraction. He's on-pace, and in a Soft 6 over 1200, the horse that can keep finding under him is the one you want. Raguel (No.7) is the value-flavoured danger, on-pace enough to be involved and strong enough to press if the front isn't tested early. Fawlty Affairs (No.6) is a classic "one of those runs" horse, she's been finishing races and this class level suits her when she finds the right trip.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. My Boy Scout (No.3) — $2.70 / $1.25
Bet $15.00 Win, return $40.50
Prob 29.7% | Place: 61.1% | Value: 1.02x Steady since tip
Why He's got the map to race near the speed and the soft 1200 usually rewards that style.

2. Raguel (No.7) — $4.50 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.3% | Place: 58.5% | Value: 1.22x ▲2% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Fawlty Affairs (No.6) — $4.00 / $1.57
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.4% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 1.04x ▼7% since tip
Why Her best chance is timing, find cover, then let the soft ground do the heavy lifting.

Roughie: Eltrum (No.4) — $9.50 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 31.1% | Value: 0.94x ▲5% since tip
Why Roughie win if the race shape gets messy and he gets a clean late run into the finish.

Race 5 – Apprentice Jockey, Big Shoes

Race type: Class 1, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, the on-pace crews push forward, midfield needs the gaps

Punty read:

Strollin' By (No.4) is the pace play. Salma's Star (No.2) is the classy second string who gets a chance to park closer than you'd expect from the price. Choc Chip (No.3) is the other top-three line because he's capable of taking advantage of a soft ground rail True setup. I'm not ignoring Bushwalker (No.7), but the model wants the value in the roughie, which is Dark Thinker (No.9).

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Strollin' By (No.4) — $3.00 / $1.45
Bet $15.00 Win, return $45.00
Prob 23.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.90x ▼18% since tip
Why Barrier 10 with midfield map, he still has the legs to find the right run and hit the line on Soft.

2. Salma's Star (No.2) — $5.00 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.02x ▼4% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Choc Chip (No.3) — $5.50 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.99x
Why On-pace and can keep moving, he is the type to get first run at the finish.

Roughie: Dark Thinker (No.9) — $17.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.8% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 1.05x ▼29% since tip
Why Roughie path is on-pace enough to survive and then the finish opens, allowing a late charge that steals a place.

Race 6 – Benchmarks and Battle Lines

Race type: Benchmark 66, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, and this is where rhythm beats bravado

Punty read:

Prefer Diamonds (No.7) is my kind of winner: built for a slow-tempo 2000 where you can stay balanced and then wind up when the field starts to stretch. Midnight Affair (No.6) is the other one who fits, he's been in the thick enough to grab a role if the race stays slow. Gosh Almighty (No.10) is the sort who can run on, but the model doesn't have him as value today, so he's a watch, not a main.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Prefer Diamonds (No.7) — $3.90 / $1.65
Bet $7.50 Each Way ($3.75W + $3.75P), return $14.62 (wins) / $6.19 (places)
Prob 27.0% | Place: 53.7% | Value: 1.38x ▲3% since tip
Why He should travel through the slog and still have something left late in Soft 6, that's the whole game at 2000.

2. Midnight Affair (No.6) — $5.00 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.05x ▲10% since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.

3. Gosh Almighty (No.10) — $3.40 / $1.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.70x ▼9% since tip
Why He can run on, but today's value leans elsewhere.

Roughie: Coto De Caza (No.2) — $14.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 1.13x Steady since tip
Why Roughie win if the pace scenario doesn't suit the midfield and the outside run opens up late.

Race 7 – Midweek Champions, Benchmark58

Race type: Benchmark 58, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so the on-pace and near speed runners have to be taken seriously

Punty read:

Alabama Hussy (No.5) is the "go now, keep going" type. I'm Scarlett (No.3) is the nice value angle as well, and she's drawn to let the race shape work for her. Street Swagger (No.4) is the grinder who can tag along and then keep finding in the last furlong, especially if the leaders soften up.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Alabama Hussy (No.5) — $3.20 / $1.55
Bet $10.50 Win, return $33.60
Prob 22.4% | Place: 53.5% | Value: 0.91x ▼9% since tip
Why On-pace map, genuine pace on, soft ground makes it harder to quicken, she keeps rolling.

2. I'm Scarlett (No.3) — $4.60 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.27x ▼9% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.85 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Street Swagger (No.4) — $9.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.02x ▼6% since tip
Why Consistent near speed, and Soft 6 can suit those who already have stamina in the tank.

Roughie: Geostorm (No.7) — $11.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.37x
Why Roughie path is if the leader does too much too early, and Geostorm gets the chance to swoop into the gap late.

Race 8 – Local-Who Knows Best?

Race type: Benchmark 66, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed, and this is a race where staying balanced off the corner is everything

Punty read:

Hanuman (No.8) is the main show. He's on-pace, and at 1100 on Soft, those types often get first crack at the finish. Abstruse (No.4) is the value-shaped alternate, and Violet And Blue (No.3) is the wildcard who can jump up when the tempo burns and the inside starts to save ground. This is exactly the type of race where the wrong-run trips get punished, so I'm sticking with horses that look like they can actually get into the action.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Hanuman (No.8) — $3.40 / $1.60
Bet $15.00 Win, return $51.00
Prob 16.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.71x ▼12% since tip
Why On-pace, and if the rail helps slightly, he should get the perfect chance to keep fighting out wide of trouble.

2. Abstruse (No.4) — $7.00 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.25x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Beaumista (No.5) — $6.00 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 45.7% | Value: 0.94x Steady since tip
Why Should be in the right part of the race, and 1100 on Soft rewards honest runners.

Roughie: Violet And Blue (No.3) — $9.50 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.40x ▲5% since tip
Why Roughie path is clean run early to mid, then a late sprint when the pace line starts to tear.

SEQUENCE LANES

EARLY QUADDIE (R1–R4)

Smart: 2,9,7 / 1,10,7,9 / 4,2,5,9 / 3,7,6,4 (192 combos x $0.26 = $50.00) -- 26% flexi
Punty's take: Two legs are tight, two legs are open as a nightclub, so it's value-flavoured entertainment, not a no-stress fairy tale.

QUADDIE (main) (R5–R8)

Smart: 4,2,3 / 7,10,6,2 / 5,3,7,4 / 8,5,4,3 (192 combos x $0.26 = $50.00) -- 26% flexi
Punty's take: Every leg has enough swing to miss by one, it's a proper quaddie punt where you either look like a genius or you're asking for another drink.

BIG 6 (R3–R8)

Smart: 4,2,5,9 / 3,7,6,4 / 4,2,3,7 / 7,10,6,2 / 5,3,7,4 / 8,5,4,3 (4096 combos x $0.00122 = $5.00) -- 0.12% flexi
Punty's take: Too many legs to get perfect, but the spine is strong, it's a multi-hit dream with teeth.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - The Soft-6 1200m rule.
When pace is moderate, the leaders don't instantly fold, they just get stitched up, so back horses that can stay near the speed and keep their action.

2 - Market drama pays when the map makes sense.
If you see a drift but the runner is still on a map that benefits from the tempo, that's where roughie land gets interesting.

3 - Bathurst rail True and Save-ground bias.
On soft footing, lanes still matter more than people think, because pushing through kickback costs ground even when the horse is fit.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Alright degens, go forth and back the horses that look like they can survive Soft 6 and a Bathurst dogfight, and leave the "hope" bets in the bin where they belong. If one thing goes wrong, it's usually the trip, so watch the first corner like it owes you money. Gamble Responsibly.
