Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Sunshine Coast, head to https://punty.ai/tips/sunshine-coast-2026-10-16
Rightio Loose Units, Sunshine Coast on a Soft 6 where the track's been getting a solid dunking, so every sprint turns into a mud wrestling match and every "sure thing" gets humbled. If you're chasing a tidy, methodical day, fuck off. If you want winners with a side of chaos, welcome home.
This is one of those meetings where the speed matters, but so does who gets a breather and straight racing room. Rail is +3m entire, tempo's moderate to genuine across the card, and the weather's doing that overcast, hold-your-breath thing. Translation, expect bunched fields, late scoots, and the odd bloke getting stuck behind a wall of horses like it's a Marvel movie premiere.
My spine today is a Big 3 and then a bunch of race-by-race sanity checks, because I'm not here to carry dead money. I'm here to pick the right battles, get a price where it's deserved, and let the track expose the frauds.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Sunshine Coast, sprint to middle distance (1000m - 1800m) card
Rail: +3m Entire
Official going: Soft 6 (expected to play sticky, especially in sprint events)
Weather: Overcast with gusts (watch for kickback and tiring leaders)
Early lane guess: A bit of pinch early, then it opens up midfield once they take a breath
Jockeys to follow:
Ben Thompson: heaps of rides, gets the job done when the pace is honest.
Archie McColm: shows up on the leaders, and he knows how to keep horses balanced in soft.
Jake Bayliss: strong support role, often the one who finds the rail run at the right time.
Stables to respect:
Corey & Kylie Geran (9 runners): they're always ready, and when their horses jump and hold a spot, it turns into a problem for everyone else.
Kristie Clark-Peoples (9 runners): they know how to have one primed for local conditions, and today screams "pace watching" for them.
Stuart & Bayley Kendrick (7 runners): expect tactical rides, and if the speed map lands, their horses pounce late.
Punty's take:
Soft 6 at Sunshine Coast is a different beast. Early on, it helps the on-pace brigade because the ground is giving them purchase to stay rolling. But when the rain has been recent and the track's holding, the finish gets tricky, and that's when you want horses who can either hold a position without wasting petrol or finish off without being shuffled too far back.
The pace story across the day is pretty clear. When the map says ON-PACE, you back the runner that can still breathe at 600m. When it's MIDFIELD and they're drifting in markets, you back them only if form explains why they're sneaking up the field. And when something is heavily backed despite mediocre excuses, you respect it, even if it smells a bit like a trap from a bargain-bin movie sequel.
Sticking to my spine, I like Tequila Baby to keep the tempo honest early, Desanto looks like the type to give you a clean, straight run, and Spirit Of Torque is the one I want for the second half of the card because wet footing and class help him bring it late.
What it means for you:
Bet the races where you can picture the run. Race 1 is built for a forward trip and clean handling through soft, so I'm attacking the top of the market there. Race 2 is pace-led chaos, so I'm backing the horse that's going to get every chance without being shuffled too far off the action. Race 8 is your "don't overthink it" finish, because Poor Ol' Johny Ray and Spirit Of Torque scream wet-track timing.
For the rest of the card, I'm happy to take value shots when the horses are set up to travel. If a runner is drifting and getting shoved out in price without a solid reason, you protect your wallet. If it's firming, and the map makes sense, you let it earn the bet.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Tequila Baby (Race 1, No.2) — $2.40
Why Keeps the ON-PACE momentum, soft track makes forward motion pay, and the draw lets her hit the trip.
2 - Desanto (Race 2, No.7) — $1.70
Why Pace-friendly map profile, the short price is earned, and she should be in the fight a long way out.
3 - Spirit Of Torque (Race 8, No.9) — $2.75
Why Wet-track timing, strong late place chances, and he fits the way this track grinds runners down.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~11 = ~$110 collect
Race 1 – Vantage Building Group Hcp (C4)
Race type: Class 4, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, ON-PACE are the danger, Star Rapper is listed as pace-disadvantaged
Punty read: Soft 6 at 1000m is all about not getting stuck in the mud too early. Tequila Baby (No.2) is the forward type, and with barrier 5 she should get to the right spot without getting dragged wide into the kickback. Shako (No.1) is your "keeps showing up" midpack runner who can settle and still pop late, but Tequila Baby's ON-PACE profile is the cleanest picture. Dream Lantern (No.5) is the one I use when I want the value angle, because those excuses earlier this prep can easily be forgiven on a day like this when the track turns form into shapes and runs.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Tequila Baby (No.2) — $2.50 / $1.15
Bet $15.00 Win, return $37.50
Prob 28.1% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.92x ▲10% since tip
Why ON-PACE, soft suits forward movement, and when she gets rolling early she just keeps coming.
2. Shako (No.1) — $2.90 / $1.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 26.7% | Place: 62.2% | Value: 1.01x ▲2% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Dream Lantern (No.5) — $6.00 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.4% | Place: 48.5% | Value: 1.13x ▼30% since tip
Why Blinkers and the soft record give her a genuine "runs on" chance, but I'm not oversizing it.
Roughie: Sweet Hesitation (No.4) — $9.00 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.9% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.93x ▲6% since tip
Why If the leaders don't finish clean, she's the kind of roughie that sneaks into third and sometimes more.
Race 2 – Amerro Engineering Hcp (C1)
Race type: Class 1, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace, pace advantaged runners are in front and Desanto is ON-PACE
Punty read: This is a sprint where leaders get rewarded early, and Desanto (No.7) is built for exactly that. She's got the best combination of being on-pacing, drawing barrier 2, and being the sort of runner who survives the first 200m without getting cooked. Buckeye (No.4) is the value leaver here, because the market is giving her respect at a price that can still pay if she's close enough turning for home. Urban Lad (No.2) is also live, but this is the kind of race where a soft-pocket leader can steal it, so I'm using him as coverage rather than a main win.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Desanto (No.7) — $1.70 / $1.17
Bet $15.00 Win, return $25.50
Prob 27.5% | Place: 54.4% | Value: 0.65x ▼15% since tip
Why Short, yes, but barrier 2 and ON-PACE means she gets every chance to run straight through.

Bet Tracked
Prob 17.9% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.85x ▲7% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Urban Lad (No.2) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.17x ▲17% since tip
Why Should be right there if she jumps, but I want the main cash on Desanto.
Roughie: Quit 'n' Tap (No.6) — $17.00 / $4.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 2.00x ▲18% since tip
Why If the pace splinters and she can roll through, she's a shot at hitting the top trifecta chaos.
Race 3 – Oceanside Orthopaedics Hcp (58)
Race type: Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, ON-PACE danger includes Lyrical Gangster and Herecomesantorini
Punty read: This one is a proper middle-distance sprint, where the 1200m actually matters because runners have time to get to where they want. Icymiss (No.10) is the best blend of being around the right spots and still having enough class to hold the line through the soft. Groening (No.15) and Langan (No.12) both give you value for place and potential, and I like how their recent runs suggest they're trending into it rather than arriving cold. Mister Mighty (No.5) is the roughie in my head because if the speed works out, those are the races he sneaks into the finish.
Top 3 + Roughie ($8.00 pool)
1. Icymiss (No.10) — $5.50 / $2.00
Bet $8.00 Each Way ($4.00W + $4.00P), return $22.00 (wins) / $8.00 (places)
Prob 17.0% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.29x ▲10% since tip
Why Best shot to land a forward position and grind them down on Soft 6.
2. Groening (No.15) — $4.60 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.6% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.74x ▼2% since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Langan (No.12) — $11.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 25.6% | Value: 1.65x Steady since tip
Why If she gets an economical run, she's the value swing for the thirds.
Roughie: Mister Mighty (No.5) — $11.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.47x Steady since tip
Why His path is pace-dependent, but if they go hard early, he can eat into them late.
Race 4 – Auto Masters Baringa & Beerwah Mdn Hcp
Race type: Maiden Handicap, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, on-pacing matters, especially early
Punty read: Maiden handicap at 1000m on soft is where you back the horse that can stay brave at 600m. Punishment Day (No.9) is the market favourite for a reason and he's set up to do the job early, while Cassia County (No.11) is the value runner if she gets cover and doesn't get stuck. Tszinsi (No.10) is the interesting one because the price says one thing, but the map and the way she's run before says she's capable of being a factor when they tire. Bar Star (No.6) is the roughie where she gets a run on the fence and makes it messy.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Punishment Day (No.9) — $2.65 / $1.45
Bet $12.00 Win, return $31.80
Prob 18.2% | Place: 51.5% | Value: 0.66x Steady since tip
Why On-pacing style, and at this trip on soft he's built to be in the mix when it counts.
2. Cassia County (No.11) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.94x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Tszinsi (No.10) — $7.50 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.59x Steady since tip
Why Big value on paper, but I'm keeping the stake tight because maiden form can be slippery.
Roughie: Bar Star (No.6) — $11.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.96x Steady since tip
Why Soft 6 can turn 1000m into a lottery, and she's priced to get a slice if it goes her way.
Race 5 – Airmaster Sunshine Coast (Bm65)
Race type: BENCHMARK 65, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, leaders should get a long look
Punty read: 1200m at Sunshine Coast on Soft 6, you've got to respect the runner who can either lead or stalk without getting bottled up. Prevailed (No.2) is the classier ON-PACE option and the betting reflects it, but I'm more interested in who keeps his position when the track churns. Carbonara (No.15) and Miss Funny Honey (No.13) are the ones who can slot into the right section of the race and turn it into place money. Provance (No.3) is the roughie because she's capable of a late swing when the leaders tire and the gaps open.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)
1. Prevailed (No.2) — $4.20 / $1.75
Bet $9.00 Win, return $37.80
Prob 11.9% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.67x ▼12% since tip
Why ON-PACE and class profile says he can hold a position through the soft.
2. Carbonara (No.15) — $6.00 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.4% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.93x ▼9% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Miss Funny Honey (No.13) — $8.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.18x ▼19% since tip
Why She can run into the finish, just not my main win anchor.
Roughie: Provance (No.3) — $11.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.32x
Why Soft track helps if she travels, and she's priced for a value strike when others flatten.
Race 6 – Diageo Australia (Bm65)
Race type: BENCHMARK 65, 1800m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, classic distance means positioning matters late
Punty read: 1800m on soft is about who can keep a sensible rhythm. Draw Attention (No.10) is drawn midfield-ish on the map and has a good enough profile to be in the finish, but my top stable read is Larusso (No.12) for value place chances because she's built to hit the line. Indamouse (No.11) is the other big name in the conversation, and Family Of League (No.13) is your roughie if the leaders get too brave early. This is one where the race can totally change shape if someone grabs the front and doesn't let go.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Draw Attention (No.10) — $4.00 / $1.75
Bet ⊘ Scratched · bet voided
Prob 13.1% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.71x
Why Balanced chance, can sneak a trip into the race plan, and soft 1800 often rewards measured runners.
2. Larusso (No.12) — $10.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.3% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.66x ▼42% since tip
Why He makes my shortlist, not my betting slip. Tracked — if he salutes, we'll wear it and the record shows it.
3. Indamouse (No.11) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.56x
Why Great win profile but I'm not paying for it when value sits elsewhere.
Roughie: Family Of League (No.13) — $11.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.40x ▼45% since tip
Why If the tempo turns into a grind, she can pick up the pieces late.
Race 7 – XXXX Hcp (C2)
Race type: Class 2, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, midfield runners can still get involved if they get cover
Punty read: 1400m, soft, and class 2. The winner usually comes from the group that can either sit within striking distance or work around trouble. Don't Doubt Missy (No.14) looks the most reliable strike because she's got the form structure to come home, and the way the map frames her gives her a fair crack at a run. Till Dusk (No.7) is your main danger if he can maintain his momentum, and Col Burn (No.2) is the chaos price that can still pop late. Snitzstream (No.11) is the roughie, because if the race splits he can slide through the gaps like a key cutting through a lock.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Don't Doubt Missy (No.14) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $31.50 (wins) / $11.81 (places)
Prob 15.4% | Place: 34.9% | Value: 1.30x ▼23% since tip
Why She's the one I want on soft at 1400, steady enough to hit the line and price is fair.
2. Till Dusk (No.7) — $7.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.46x ▲8% since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Col Burn (No.2) — $4.20 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.77x ▼7% since tip
Why Pace is tempting, but value isn't there enough for me to push.
Roughie: Snitzstream (No.11) — $12.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.07x ▼5% since tip
Why Snitzstream's path is the gaps, and wet tracks create those gaps when runners stop galloping.
Race 8 – Ray White Commercial Northern Corridor Sunshine Coast Mdn Hcp
Race type: Maiden Handicap, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, but this is where timing and straight running win
Punty read: This is the "clean run" maiden handicap where the best horse usually holds position and doesn't get stuck. Spirit Of Torque (No.9) is my best bet because the wet-track style and his place profile scream value you can actually use. Poor Ol' Johny Ray (No.3) is the other big one, he's the kind of horse who keeps making ground and wears you down, and he's marked at a price that still makes sense for a maiden. Dark Martian (No.5) is live for thirds, especially if the leaders start to wobble and the midfield gets a clear run to the line.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Spirit Of Torque (No.9) — $2.75 / $1.35
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), return $17.88 (wins) / $8.78 (places)
Prob 30.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.21x ▼4% since tip
Why Wet-track timing, strong late place potential, and he should be there for the final hit.
2. Poor Ol' Johny Ray (No.3) — $2.45 / $1.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.34x ▼12% since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Dark Martian (No.5) — $6.50 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.48x ▼9% since tip
Why If he can travel without being shuffled, he's a genuine third or second chance.
Roughie: Kindred (No.7) — $9.50 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.86x
Why Big finish type if they go too hard, but he needs luck like every roughie does.
SEQUENCE LANES
EARLY QUADDIE (R1–R4)
Smart: 1,2,5,4 / 7,2,4,6 / 10,15,5,12 / 9,11,10,6 (256 combos x $0.25 = $65.00) -- 25% flexi
One-line commentary: Four open-ish legs, not a plug-and-play, but it's the only way to respect Soft 6 chaos across sprints.
Quaddie (R5–R8)
Smart: 2,15,13,3 / 10,11,13,12 / 2,7,14,11 / 9,3,5,7 (256 combos x $0.25 = $65.00) -- 25% flexi
One-line commentary: R8 is relatively clear fav-wise, but the 1400 and 1800 swing, so you've gotta spread properly.
BIG 6 (R3–R8)
Smart: 10 / 9 / 2 / 10 / 14 / 9 (1 combos x $5.00 = $5.00) -- 500% flexi
One-line commentary: This is entertainment only, you're betting the most likely winners and trusting them to do the job in a wet track grind.
Punty's take: Early and main Quaddie are proper "cover the shapes" tickets, Big 6 is a tightrope act. If you play the sequences, do it for the adrenaline, not because it owes you money.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Soft 6 loves the forward rhythm
In these sprints, the ON-PACE runners that can hold position through the kickback are the ones that turn "place" into "win".
2 - Maiden handicap at 1000m is a trap for tidy form
Punishment Day in Race 4 and Spirit Of Torque in Race 8 are the types who can dodge trouble, which is half the battle on soft.
3 - Value roughies today are price-aware, not random
Bar Star, Mister Mighty, and Kindred are all roughie chances because they need the same thing to happen, speed collapses slightly and gaps open at the right moment. Like when the good guy finally finds the door in Die Hard.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Soft 6 makes every race a contact sport, so back the runners that look like they'll still be galloping when everyone else's legs go jelly. Now get on, and chase that spine. Gamble Responsibly.
