Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Launceston, head to https://punty.ai/tips/launceston-2026-10-16
Rightio Loose Units, Launceston's on a Soft 5 and the whole card looks like it wants runners to be brave early and honest through the straight. With the rail +6m entire it's a bit of a "don't get lost, don't get stuck" kinda day, so get your lanes right and let the horses do the rest.
This is the type of meeting where the speed map does a lot of talking, because Soft ground just amplifies everything. Leaders can get dragged into a serious scrap, backmarkers need the gaps and the timing, and anyone stuck widest turning for home better have a motor under them. We've got a heap of decent market support too, so I'm not chasing shadows, I'm chasing the ones that get the right run.
My spine today is built on three specific winners, then we spread with place leverage and sane roughies where the price is telling a story. The quaddies and Big 6 are there for a bit of fun, but the real work gets done in the Top 3. Alright, let's print money, or at least suffer less than the bloke next to you.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Soft 5, 1100m to 1600m card
Rail: +6m Entire
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Speed vs Ground, with On-Pace getting every chance)
Weather: Fine (watch for mild gusts, keep an eye on how horses handle the kick)
Early lane guess: Fairly forward, but gaps will matter, especially late races
Tempo profile: Moderate tempo, with a few races where the map suggests the speed will bunch up and you'll get boxed if you're too polite
Jockeys to follow:
Ms Carleen Hefel: Busy book, and she's riding like she actually wants to win, not just finish
Ms Erica Byrne Burke: Regularly around the mark, good for races that need a sit and pounce
Troy Baker: Steps up in a few classes, plus his horses tend to take the race seriously
Stables to respect:
J K Blacker (14 runners): Live and busy, and maiden and jump-up races often come from this corner
S Gandy (9 runners): Knows how to place a horse, especially when the track is Soft and races shape up
Sigrid Carr (7 runners): Several "could be any day" types, and today has the right conditions for them
Punty's take:
This meeting is basically a speed map test, with Soft 5 adding extra weight to staying in rhythm. When horses are drawn mid to handy and the map says ON-PACE or LEADER, they get every opportunity to run their race, even if it turns into a grinding match. You can feel it in the fields.
Races 3 and 6 scream "class rises, winners come through," and I like the way the favourites are positioned. Race 4 is a bit different, that short sprint is where you get judged for your early position, then you either slice through or you get swallowed. That's why I'm big on the place angle in that one, because it's the kind of heat where the finishing order changes but the right horses still hit the top 3.
Then later, you've got the open handicap swings in Race 7, where one short-priced runner can control the tempo but the market can still be caught napping. Race 8 is a proper BM60 where one horse is absolutely the centre of gravity, and the rest are chasing the right kind of trip. If you try to be clever in a straight sprint, you're basically auditioning to lose money.
What it means for you:
I'm treating the Top 3 horses like the "must-have lanes." If they're drawn and mapped properly, you're getting the right run. In the races where I've got Each Way or Place, it's because Soft 5 makes gaps more valuable than pure luck, so you can salvage a heap even if a horse misses the exact finish.
Bet early on the races where the map and market support line up, like Race 2, 3, 6 and 8. For quaddies and Big 6, don't go full panic width. The sequences are entertainment first, and the singles and Top 3 are where you're supposed to do the heavy lifting.
Now, breathe. Put your money on the right stories, not the loudest ones.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Ozonica (Race 6, No.1) — $2.00
Why Lightning speed and the type that handles Soft trips like it's Tuesday morning
2 - Agadoo (Race 8, No.9) — $1.95
Why Drawn to get an economical run and too many paths lead to it being in the finish
3 - Go Jeanie (Race 5, No.6) — $2.85
Why Looks set for a power run through the middle distances of the sprint, then holds on
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~11.00 = ~$110.00 collect
Race 1 – The Newmarket Night School Stampede
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, with backmarkers likely needing the gaps and midfield types to track the leaders
Punty read: Maiden over 1600 on Soft 5, so the race becomes a patience game, not a hero day one. Jock Rock looks the most "proper" in the straight to me, and the setup is there for him to hit the finish with something left. Symphony Queen is the classier market favourite but this is a maiden, so she still has to find the hard yards in the wet. Shines Discreetly is that sneaky type, if the race doesn't sprint itself to death early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.00 pool)
1. Jock Rock (No.14) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet $7.00 Each Way ($3.50W + $3.50P), return $22.75 (wins) / $8.40 (places)
Prob 16.1% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.65x ▼8% since tip
Why He's got the fitness, gets a good look at the action from mid, and the market says he's live
2. Symphony Queen (No.12) — $4.50 / $1.90

3. Shines Discreetly (No.7) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why Soft suit and the gear tweak vibe, she looks like she'll be running on once clear
Roughie: Called Through (No.2) — $12.00 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.6% | Place: 28.0% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why He's a "needs the speed to flatten and timing to land" kind of roughie, not a turn-and-burn short cut
Race 2 – Slow Roast at 1200
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, pace advantaged types can sit closer, backmarkers need cover and a clean lane
Punty read: This is one of those races where if you're too far back, you pay for it twice on Soft. Warrior Son maps in a way that lets him sit around the right spots and hit the last 200m with purpose. Miss Strat has the kind of profile that can lift with the right trip, and Nine Choirs is the type to slot into the placings and keep you entertained.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Warrior Son (No.5) — $4.60 / $1.90
Bet $15.00 Win, return $69.00
Prob 18.6% | Place: 50.0% | Value: 1.05x ▼2% since tip

Roughie: Remis Award (No.4) — $9.00 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 33.5% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why He's more "place chance in a messy run" than "bolt in from nowhere", roughie maths only
Race 3 – The Place Extra Conspiracy
Race type: Class 1, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, leaders expected to mix it, ON-PACE types should stalk into the straight
Punty read: This is a short-course brawl where the leaders and stalkers get the credit and the closers get the blame. John Of Jane is the obvious anchor, he's already shown he can do the job at this distance and soft conditions don't seem to faze him. Genuine Lady is the value place option, her form screams she can sit in the right spot and keep finding. Warrior Smile is the danger if the race turns into a run-on contest, he's too tidy to ignore.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. John Of Jane (No.1) — $2.45 / $1.32
Bet $15.00 Win, return $36.75
Prob 26.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.88x ▼15% since tip

2. Genuine Lady (No.7) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 53.4% | Value: 1.33x ▲15% since tip

Prob 10.5% | Place: 40.4% | Value: 1.07x ▼20% since tip
Why If John Of Jane drifts at all, this guy is right there to capitalise
Roughie: Out Of The Sphere (No.3) — $13.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.33x Steady since tip
Why Roughie path is a fast pace and a late sprint from ON-PACE, if it sets up he can absolutely pinch it
Race 4 – Sprint, Snarl, Sit Wide and Survive
Race type: Maiden, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, leaders can slug it out early, everyone else needs to stay in the race before the turn
Punty read: 1100 on Soft 5 is chaos with a straight face. Office Award looks built for it, he's got that "earn your cheque" profile for the back half. Sh'bourne Top Gun is a classic place-play type, because this race often decides by who's still balanced late. Copper Reign is the one for the "money might be early but he's not dead" crew.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Office Award (No.3) — $3.80 / $1.62
Bet $15.00 Win, return $57.00
Prob 26.1% | Place: 59.2% | Value: 1.01x ▲11% since tip

Prob 12.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.15x ▼25% since tip
Why He's got the profile to sit around and make it awkward in the final 100m
Roughie: Electric Mo (No.8) — $16.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 28.4% | Value: 1.36x ▲27% since tip
Why Roughie path is soft-ground acceleration, and a late kick when the leaders start paying interest
Race 5 – BM76, Respect the Go Jeanie
Race type: BM76, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, leaders likely stay sticky, midfield runners can hit the straight with momentum
Punty read: This is where you want a horse that can keep composure. Go Jeanie is the centre of the plan, she's drawn to get a ground-saving position and her recent runs suggest she's building that last-hit finish. Fighting For Gold is the obvious class threat but he's not value enough for me to go harder. Shy Guy is your "if they go too hard early" placings machine, Wineglass Bay is a reminder that value can live in the ninth circle of hell too.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Go Jeanie (No.6) — $2.85 / $1.25
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $14.96 (wins) / $6.56 (places)
Prob 27.5% | Place: 65.2% | Value: 1.05x ▼4% since tip
Why She's the right kind of steady, gets a good run and doesn't look like she'll fade early
2. Fighting For Gold (No.8) — $2.80 / $1.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.1% | Place: 54.0% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Shy Guy (No.3) — $8.00 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.2% | Place: 34.4% | Value: 1.30x Steady since tip
Why In a softer tempo, he's right there to swipe the placings
Roughie: Wineglass Bay (No.1) — $11.00 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.02x ▲6% since tip
Why Roughie chance is a mid-race pocket and a strong straight, if he gets room he can take your breath away
Race 6 – Ozonica's Soft-5 Mission
Race type: Class 3, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, On-Pace types should get first crack at the soft ground finish
Punty read: Ozonica is the pick because she looks like she wants this exact track and trip. Diamond Indaruf is the quality backup if the favourite has one of those "just getting warmed up" moments. Benefitsofmine is the danger if the race bunches and he can slot into the run. Brave Jet can get involved too, but I'd be protecting first, not chasing.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Ozonica (No.1) — $2.00 / $1.14
Bet $15.00 Win, return $30.00
Prob 36.1% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.97x ▼12% since tip

Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.24x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.00 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Benefitsofmine (No.2) — $7.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.00x ▲7% since tip
Why The map says midfield but his profile says he can get rolling late
Roughie: Fluffy's Girl (No.7) — $13.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.5% | Place: 24.3% | Value: 0.96x ▲15% since tip
Why Roughie path is interference-free late runs and her getting the right lane in a crowded straight
Race 7 – Crawf's Open Handicap Headline Act
Race type: Open Handicap, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, pace is important but the sprint makes it about who stays balanced late
Punty read: Zany Girl is the one I'm leaning on because she's in the sweet spot of race shape. Prince Of Khatun is the one to fear, short enough that you can't ignore it, but the reason it's a value angle is because the market still has to prove it in the final 150m. Glory Mission is the other danger if the race turns into an on-speed slug.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Zany Girl (No.4) — $2.45 / $1.14
Bet $10.50 Win, return $25.73
Prob 26.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why Proper balance at 1100, and she should get the run that lets her keep contributing late
2. Prince Of Khatun (No.3) — $3.90 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 26.1% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.35x ▲3% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.45 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Glory Mission (No.6) — $3.00 / $1.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.02x Steady since tip
Why She's got the credible pattern to be in the finish, especially if the leaders kick on
Roughie: Mastretta (No.8) — $15.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.8% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why Roughie path is a late squeeze and the field losing rhythm, and he's the one who benefits if that happens
Race 8 – BM60, Agadoo to the Front and Stay There
Race type: BM60, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Chicane style pressure and backmarkers need gaps and timing
Punty read: This is where I like the simplest story. Agadoo is the best horse on the page for the run profile, and at this price you don't need a magic trick, you just need it to run its race. Hold The Door is the one to respect for the run, not to overshoot on price. I'm also watching Gee Gees Me Boy as the danger if the pace flattens and he can find the right strip late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)
1. Agadoo (No.9) — $1.95 / $1.15
Bet $9.00 Win, return $17.55
Prob 28.8% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.75x ▼3% since tip
Why Too many routes point to it being prominent, and in BM60s the best tends to survive the chaos
2. I'm Chev (No.11) — $10.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.70x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.70 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Hold The Door (No.5) — $7.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.4% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.24x ▼7% since tip
Why Gate 1 on a 1400 is gold for trip management, and Soft ground rewards balance
Roughie: Gee Gees Me Boy (No.4) — $9.50 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.12x Steady since tip
Why Roughie path is a late sprint from back and a perfect slice at the right moment
SEQUENCE LANES
EARLY QUADDIE (R1–R4)
Smart: 12,7,14,2 / 9,5,10,4 / 1,7,2,3 / 3,4,11,8 (256 combos x $0.20 = $50.00) -- 20% flexi
Punty's take: Open bunch legs in the early races means it's wide by design, entertaining as hell, and you need at least one proper result swing to make it sing.
QUADDIE (R5–R8)
Smart: 6,8,3,1 / 1,2,6,10,7 / 6,4,3 / 9,5,11,4 (240 combos x $0.15 = $35.00) -- 15% flexi
Punty's take: Quaddie is built with one tighter leg and three broader ones, so it's still a gamble but you're not doing full chaos.
BIG 6 (R3–R8)
Smart: 1,7,2 / 3,4,11,8 / 6,8,3,1 / 1,2,6,10,7 / 6,4,3,1 / 9,5,11,4 (3840 combos x $0.001302 = $5.00) -- 0.13% flexi
Punty's take: Too many legs stack uncertainty, so this is basically a lottery ticket with better horse names.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Soft 5 does funny things to maiden timings
In Launceston maidens on Soft, the horses that survive the kick and keep grinding are the ones that keep showing up in the top 3. That's why Jock Rock and Office Award get the respect, their profiles fit the grit.
2 - Beware the "looks ready" market trap
In the short races where the market favourite is firming, the place getters can be the value lane because the race can bunch up and rearrange. That's why Sh'bourne Top Gun and Hold The Door are the types I'm protecting for a top 3 hit.
3 - The boring favourite is still the right answer
Agadoo and Ozonica are the kind of short-priced leaders that win because they don't need luck, they just need to execute. Most punters want fireworks, these two are the straight-line denial.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Alright degenerates, if the track is playing tricks, we're playing smarter ones. Back the spine in the main races, use places to catch the chaos, and if the quaddies hit, buy the pub a round, if not, blame the Soft 5 and move on like legends.
Gamble Responsibly.
