Punty's Punts
Race type: Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, leaders have the advantage, but Soft 6 means you still need them to keep going.
Punty read:
Takeko (No.1) is the on-pacer you want on Soft 6 at Caulfield. He's drawn close enough to avoid getting cooked early, and he can race on speed without needing a miracle. Custom (No.3) is the sort that can finish hard if traffic breaks, but he's a bit of a value tease. Recuperato (No.5) is the classic "might not win, but will be there" type, which is exactly what place betting is built for.
Mystery 'n' Drama (No.7) has tongue tie first time, and first-time gear on wet tracks can sharpen up the run a touch. But in a race where we've got speed on hand, I'm treating No.7 like a value strap, not the anchor. And with the rail out, the temptation is to chase the fence, so midfield runners need a cleaner run than they get in the real world.
Top 3 + Roughie ($21.50 pool)
1. Takeko (No.1) — $6.00 / $1.95 🏆 6TH
Bet $9.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$9.00
Prob 27.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.87x
Why Stays close enough, can race on speed, and the Soft 6 suits that sustained effort style.
2. Custom (No.3) — $2.42 / $1.20 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.5% | Place: 52.4% | Value: 0.62x
Why Strong place profile, but the place price isn't giving you enough cushion.
3. Recuperato (No.5) — $5.85 / $1.85 🏆 5TH
Bet $12.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$12.50
Prob 19.4% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.29x
Why Middling draw, but he's the "arrives late" sort for place leverage, especially with the wind sapping closers.
Roughie: Mystery 'n' Drama (No.7) — $11.25 / $2.75 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 34.4% | Value: 1.31x
Why Can run into the finish, but needs the right trip, and the day's pace is more about staying power for the leaders.
Race type: Handicap, 1100m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so it's about sitting close without getting buried, then launching.
Punty read:
This is a race where speed is manufactured, not guaranteed. Ghana's Akan (No.1) is firming and looks ready to punch through early. Stakes (No.6) is the kind of horse that can be in the action just from sheer fitness, and Resolutely (No.8) is the value place type if the leaders don't break them by too much.
The danger is horses that get trapped back and then have to hold on through soft ground, because the sprint finish is short. If Ghana's Akan jumps and keeps a rhythm, he makes it hard for everyone else. If you're chasing extra value, Brazen Dechambeau (No.5) is the roughie option, but he needs the kick to land in time.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Ghana's Akan (No.1) — $4.30 / $1.70 🏆 4TH
Bet $11.00 Each Way ($5.50W + $5.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$11.00
Prob 21.5% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.09x
Why Draw and temperament scream "get involved early", and the place payoff is where this race lives.
2. Stakes (No.6) — $5.10 / $1.85 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.1% | Place: 59.6% | Value: 1.21x
Why Great profile, but the insurance is already covered on the top pick.
3. Resolutely (No.8) — $4.00 / $1.65 🏆 2ND
Bet $4.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$2.60
Prob 15.2% | Place: 56.4% | Value: 0.71x
Why Gets the pace right and can sneak into the money if the front pack doesn't run away.
Roughie: Brazen Dechambeau (No.5) — $10.50 / $3.00 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.31x
Why If the speed stays honest and the soft ground doesn't flatten the kick, he can clout them late.
Race type: Handicap, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, so the lead is on, but wind and Soft 6 can make it hard to keep bursting.
Punty read:
Tennessee Bound (No.3) is the clear speed. At this distance, leaders either make the race or get caught in the last 100. Here, the profile says he keeps going. Luna Cat (No.5) is the value play because she can track the right part of the field and then roll into the finish.
Butternut Princess (No.6) is a live rougher for a place cheque if the race splits. Salsa Fellow (No.1) and Behaviour (No.8) are the types that can be thereabouts, but I'm not betting them to win because the pace shape is too on-the-nose and Caulfield sprints punish wasted ground.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Tennessee Bound (No.3) — $1.46 / $1.05 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$7.50
Prob 45.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.75x
Why Keeps the lead plan, and Soft 6 with a genuine pace profile suits his keep-going style.
2. Luna Cat (No.5) — $6.60 / $2.30 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.5% | Place: 54.1% | Value: 1.61x
Why She's got the profile for a place, but the bet plan is win-only because place divs are thin.
3. Butternut Princess (No.6) — $13.25 / $3.40 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.6% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 1.43x
Why You watch the market, she's there for depth, but we're not paying for extra risk.
Roughie: Salsa Fellow (No.1) — $13.75 / $3.40 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.3% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.67x
Why Can finish strongly off traffic, but leaders are likely to set the terms all the way in.
Race type: Handicap, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, so you want horses that can take their spot and still quicken.
Punty read:
Signature Scent (No.3) is the on-pacer you back when you want him to be a presence, not just a participant. Prince Tycoon (No.2) is the other big threat, and Afterberna (No.4) has the right mix of keeping the position and running on.
Express Class (No.5) and Farcited (No.6) look like danger with the way Caulfield sprints can open and close late. But the key is Signature Scent and Prince Tycoon having the right early positioning so the Soft 6 doesn't steal their kick.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.50 pool)
1. Signature Scent (No.3) — $4.10 / $1.72 🏆 4TH
Bet $12.00 Each Way ($6.00W + $6.00P) — ✗ Lost, net -$12.00
Prob 25.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.23x
Why On-pacer with a Caulfield sprint mindset, and Soft 6 rewards horses who stay balanced.
2. Prince Tycoon (No.2) — $5.30 / $2.05 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.7% | Place: 68.8% | Value: 1.20x
Why The profile fits, but we've already paid the EW balance with the top pick.
3. Afterberna (No.4) — $6.40 / $2.25 🏆 2ND
Bet $7.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$9.38
Prob 15.2% | Place: 64.3% | Value: 1.18x
Why Should be there to keep collecting places, and you don't need to win this one to cash.
Roughie: Express Class (No.5) — $9.65 / $3.10 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.6% | Place: 21.4% | Value: 0.54x
Why Value isn't quite enough to justify extra stake, but he can absolutely feature if the race turns into a sprint test.
Race type: Handicap, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, so the race is about getting position, then sustaining through the corners.
Punty read:
First Chorus (No.9) is first-up value on form and track, but Seafall (No.5) is the one I like for the actual betting job. Seafall maps close enough and has the Soft 6 style that keeps grinding. Detonator Jack (No.2) is a value place option, and if the race goes a bit long, he can grab money late.
Jimmy The Bear (No.1) is the roughie, but he needs things to go right, and at Caulfield 1600m, traffic can be a thief.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. First Chorus (No.9) — $2.77 / $1.32 🏆 WINNER
Bet $6.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$11.50
Prob 24.0% | Place: 64.6% | Value: 0.76x
Why On-pacer in a race where position is king, and soft ground is where this type can keep a long stride.
2. Seafall (No.5) — $6.40 / $1.95 🏆 3RD
Bet $8.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$11.20
Prob 21.5% | Place: 48.7% | Value: 1.58x
Why This is the money lane, he's built to hit the line hard and keep finding.
3. Detonator Jack (No.2) — $7.80 / $2.20 🏆 8TH
Bet $4.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$4.50
Prob 13.9% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.24x
Why Can take a good spot and run on, especially if the pace doesn't collapse early.
Roughie: Jimmy The Bear (No.1) — $9.75 / $2.55 🏆 9TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.15x
Why He's capable, but you'd need a clean run plus a race shape that doesn't drain his finishing burst.
Race type: Handicap, 2400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so it becomes a tactical battle, then a real test late.
Punty read:
Decalogue (No.1) is the anchor. With slow tempo, on-pacing staying types get the chance to travel without being shredded early. Kings Reflection (No.7) is the pressure runner in a strong spot, and Brillantezza (No.3) is a genuine class act if he's got enough in the tank.
Our Chief (No.5) and Harbour Town (No.6) can get involved, but for me, this is about the horses that can keep a rhythm and not get trapped behind tired traffic.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)
1. Decalogue (No.1) — $4.30 / $1.62
Bet $10.00 Win
Prob 28.4% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.40x
Why Slow pace makes it harder for kick-only types, so you want the horse that can sit close and keep grinding.
2. Kings Reflection (No.7) — $3.65 / $1.52
Bet $10.00 Place
Prob 21.7% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.91x
Why If the race stays tactical, he's the one stalking the right pace, not chasing a mirage.
3. Brillantezza (No.3) — $6.10 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 0.93x
Why He's classy, but the place plan is elsewhere today.
Roughie: Dirnaseer (No.2) — $9.25 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 25.2% | Value: 1.03x
Why Needs a cleaner run into the battle, and staying races punish indecision.
Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, so it's about settling close, then quickening on a wet surface.
Punty read:
Winnasedge (No.7) is my favourite for the day's "keep him on your ticket" job, and Cosmic Crusader (No.1) is the real threat with the tongue tie first time. Miraval Rose (No.8) is the value cover, but the race likely boils down to who can hold the rail and still switch at the right moment.
Aztec Ruler (No.4) is the roughie that can pop, but open sprints with wet ground are savage, and it's hard from midfield to land the finish every time.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.50 pool)
1. Winnasedge (No.7) — $4.50 / $1.62
Bet $14.50 Win
Prob 26.5% | Place: 60.4% | Value: 1.34x
Why On-pace gun with the right rail-positioning vibe for Caulfield, and Soft 6 helps him keep the run.
2. Cosmic Crusader (No.1) — $3.90 / $1.52
Bet $10.00 Place
Prob 24.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.08x
Why Tongue tie and a strong Caulfield profile, he can travel and then be there when it counts.
3. Miraval Rose (No.8) — $5.20 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 60.1% | Value: 0.82x
Why Just misses the place threshold today, and open class means thin margins.
Roughie: Aztec Ruler (No.4) — $29.50 / $4.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.3% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.78x
Why Needs chaos to land exactly his way, which is fun, but we're not paying for fun.
Race type: Handicap, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so you need a horse that can keep that momentum while others tire.
Punty read:
Makdane (No.2) is the clear top for value and forward running, he's the type that can keep his feet under him when the track gets sticky. Stop The Rock (No.6) is the place-friendly on-pacer, and Prince Eric (No.3) is the run-on backmarker who'll be there late if the speed doesn't spike too hard.
Belle Savoir (No.12) is in the mix for depth, but Diwali, Station One and Aftermath are the kind of runners that can look like a chance, then get swallowed when the pace turns into a grind.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Makdane (No.2) — $5.40 / $1.95
Bet $10.50 Win
Prob 26.4% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.67x
Why On-pace with the Soft 6 style, and he should be in the race for longer than the market expects.
2. Stop The Rock (No.6) — $6.35 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.7% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.32x
Why Place profile is solid, but the price band isn't right for the plan.
3. Prince Eric (No.3) — $8.35 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.7% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.15x
Why Might run on, but place leverage isn't high enough for today's stakes.
Roughie: Belle Savoir (No.12) — $10.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.25x
Why She's in the wider finish picture, but we're focused on the horses with better "money now" paths.
Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so it's about being in the right pocket and not being stuck in it.
Punty read:
Cruiserweight (No.2) is a class and comfort pick at this distance, he's built for the "slow pace then real sprint" scenario. Mahershala (No.6) is the place value because she can find the better lane late, and Celtics (No.5) is the other place anchor.
Jenni Gone Bonkers (No.4) is the roughie that can run into it, but with a slow tempo, you still need either a perfect run or a big kick. Just Too Fly needs a more specific race setup to justify the win.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)
1. Cruiserweight (No.2) — $1.97 / $1.13
Bet $6.50 Win
Prob 38.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.87x
Why He's the on-paper king here, and in slow tempo races, the most reliable style wins.
2. Mahershala (No.6) — $5.60 / $1.72
Bet $10.00 Place
Prob 18.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.17x
Why Backmarker who can still hit the line, and place betting catches the race shape.
3. Celtics (No.5) — $7.35 / $2.00
Bet $6.00 Place
Prob 15.7% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 1.33x
Why Likely to get a tidy run and be part of the final three, especially if the speed doesn't stack them too deep.
Roughie: Jenni Gone Bonkers (No.4) — $13.00 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.0% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 0.90x
Why She's got a place path if traffic opens, but she's too dependent on late gaps to be in our core plan.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Caulfield on a Soft 6 with the rail out and the wind in full grumpy mode. Today is one of those "go now, keep going" meetings, where leaders get a nice hit of confidence and the backmarkers have to be sponsored by magic. Showers about, so the track might be slippery enough to turn the straight into a slip-n-slide, but the gusts are also giving on-pacers a leg-up up the straight. Wet ground loves brave horses, and boring horses get punished.
Punty's take: I'm building around the obvious speed lanes, then sprinking in a couple of value gremlins where the market's overthinking it. The rail is Out 10m entire circuit, so you can get away with staying closer to the fence early, but if you're getting dragged wide for no reason, you're basically racing into the coffee shop and back.
Big pattern for me today is place leverage, because on Soft 6, you often get "might win it" horses finishing on at least for a cheque. Win betting can be a rollercoaster, place betting is where you stop the nausea.
2, 3 punchy paragraphs? Yep.
If you like your racing like a TV crime drama, today's the episode where the front half of the field keeps getting away with it, and the late burst only works if they didn't waste fuel early. And if you're looking for value, go hunting where the gear or the draw keeps the horse from doing extra work. I'm paying attention to first-up prep for the runners that can find rhythm early.
Now let's get into it, before the heavens open and we all start blaming Punty.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Caulfield, 1000-2400m card
Rail: Out 10m Entire Circuit
Official going: Soft 6 (expected to play Speed vs Stamina)
Weather: Showers, 13°C, wind 24km/h WNW, gusts about (watch for wet patches and the headwind up the straight)
Early lane guess: On-pace front half
Tempo profile: Genuine to moderate, but the wind can stretch them, so early position matters.
Jockeys to follow:
Craig Williams: If a horse can get into a stalking rhythm, he rides like he's been told where the finish line is.
Jye McNeil: Slides into handy spots and doesn't panic when the track gets greasy.
Luke Cartwright: When his mount is a genuine chance, he extracts the last bit without wasting sprint.
Stables to respect:
C Maher (4 runners): Loves setting horses up for Caulfield trips, and his winners usually have a plan, not a prayer.
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (5 runners): Their on-pace types go through the line like they've got unfinished business.
G M Begg (2 runners): When they show confidence with the early betting, you can bet the horse's ready.
Punty's take:
Caulfield today is basically a speed test with a wet-track accent. The gusty headwind up the straight makes it harder for the deep closers to sustain that last-few strides, so if a horse is racing within its self and not doing dumb work wide, it gets a big psychological boost. Think "hold position, then pounce" rather than "fly late from the back and pray for traffic luck".
Race 1 sets the tone with a bunch of on-pace and midfield types, and the Soft 6 should reward horses that can keep a gear going. Race 3 is a short sharp handicap where the market favourite is doing the hard work by being too short. That's where we grab a value runner that still place-leverages well, Luna Cat, and don't get lured into only chasing the obvious leader.
By the time you hit Race 6 and Race 9, the card turns into proper form and class sorting. Decalogue in Race 6 and Cruiserweight in Race 9 are the backbone, then you stack around them with the place-friendly types.
What it means for you:
If you're playing simple, back your Big 3 types and then protect your ticket with the place selections. Today screams "don't be a hero in win-only markets" because Soft 6 with wind makes races messy late. If you're playing exotics, you need a couple of horses that can genuinely survive traffic and still hit the line running. No extra wide adventures.
If you're chasing value, I like the way the market has firms and drifts in different races, and I'm leaning into the ones that match the pace map. The roughies are there for value only, not because I'm bored. Your safest path is place leverage on the horses likely to be in the race for longer, then one or two flutters on runners that can upgrade with a clean trip.
