Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Cunnamulla, head to https://punty.ai/tips/cunnamulla-2026-05-23
Rightio Loose Units, Cunnamulla's serving up a Soft-track scrap with a true rail, a couple of clean maps, and a couple of races that look like someone dropped a shopping trolley down the stairs. There's no rain to save the sniffers, but the cool breeze and gusts can make the last furlong feel longer than a Marvel movie. This is the sort of card where the handy types get first look, the backmarkers need luck, and the market's probably going to overcook a couple of shorties like a snag on a campfire.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Cunnamulla, 1000-1400m card
Rail: True
Official going: Soft (expected to play fair, with handy runners and inside draws getting every chance)
Weather: Sunny, 13°C, humidity 71%, wind 16km/h E (watch for gusts and a bit of sting in the last 200)
Early lane guess: Inside to middle lane should be fine early; don't get too cute looking for miracle swoopers
Tempo profile: Races 1 and 2 look steady-to-moderate, Race 3 has proper tempo, Race 4 is tactical, Race 5 looks like a crawl then sprint home
Jockeys to follow:
Hayley Saunders — lands on a stack of live rides and gets a few of the better maps
Todd Banks — keeps popping up on the key hopes and can make a mid-card race sing
Darren Evans — gets a decent spread of rides and can cash in if the pace goes to plan
Stables to respect:
Monique Gavin (6 runners) — has a serious hand in the chaos races and enough bullets to nick one
W P Baker (7 runners) — busy yard, a few handy chances, and always worth a sniff when the map suits
R W Connolly (4 runners) — a couple of runners with bounce-back potential and roughie spice
Punty's take:
This meeting screams "play the map, not the poster on the pub wall". Race 1 and Race 4 look the cleanest for logic: handy runners, useful barriers, and enough wet-ground grunt to make the on-pacers hard to reel in. Race 2 is a proper bottle of chaos — seven runners, moderate speed, and a few who can win if the right bloke sneezes at the right time. Race 3 has genuine pace, which is good news for the stalkers and bad news for the donkey that gets overbet on reputation alone.
Race 5 is the sort of slow-run benchmark where everyone watches the first 800m like it's cricket and then suddenly remembers they wanted a sprint finish. If they crawl, the handy types get the jump and the swoopers need the race to fall in their lap like a free kebab. The track itself looks fair enough, but with the rail true and no rain, I'm not hunting for some mystical fence bias from the heavens — I'm backing horses that can hold a spot, travel on the soft, and finish off without needing a miracle from the racing gods.
What it means for you:
Default to Place where the race is tight and let the win plays breathe in the races where the map and price line up. Race 4 is the anchor — not because the favourite is a moral, but because it's the one race where the form, track, and setup actually make sense without you needing a tin foil hat. Race 2 and Race 5 are the value playgrounds; that's where you can get paid if the market gets greedy and starts treating average price tags like certainty.
Don't get sucked into shorties just because they're short. Dazzington and Queen Arni are the kind of favourites you can respect without proposing to them. If you want to play it smart, keep the stake tight, lean on the place plays, and use the multi as the spicy sauce, not the main meal. If the roughies land, you'll feel like a genius; if they don't, at least you didn't punt like a mug with a fresh pay packet.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Upturn (Race 2, No.3) — $15.87
Why Blinkers back on and the map says he gets every chance to stalk the speed and pounce when the leaders start blowing.
2 - Lucky Force (Race 4, No.4) — $6.13
Why Best betting race on the card for mine; handy enough map, decent soft-track profile, and he's the one that can punch through when the favourite gets crowded.
3 - Kantai (Race 5, No.5) — $11.49
Why Slow tempo should suit a horse who can sit in the first wave and kick before the others wake up; right sort of horse for a tactical scrap.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~1118.74 = ~$11187.40 collect
Race 1 – The Soft-Track Snaggers
Race type: Mdn Plate, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo with Dazzington and Celtic Light rolling forward; not much is going to be given away cheaply
Punty read: This is a tidy little maiden where the on-pacers should get their chance without too much nonsense. Dazzington maps beautifully and Celtic Light isn't there to make up the numbers either, while Take A Break has enough tactical speed to be around the money if the race becomes a shove-up contest. Powerful Dolphins is the roughie with a path — if the speed is honest and the leaders soften each other up, he can charge into the frame late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.50 pool)
1. Dazzington (No.1) — $3.50 / $1.83
Bet $12.50 Place, return $22.88
Prob 24.4% | Place: 76.0% | Value: 0.85x
Why Maps on-speed from a decent gate and the soft ground shouldn't upset his rhythm; he'll get first crack at the race and that's half the battle in these little sprints.
2. Take A Break (No.3) — $4.59 / $2.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.7% | Place: 68.8% | Value: 0.95x
Why Has the right run from barrier 2 and won't need a miracle, but the place price is just a touch awkward so Punty's not forcing the issue.
3. Celtic Light (No.7) — $5.24 / $2.41
Bet $5.00 Place, return $12.05
Prob 19.4% | Place: 66.0% | Value: 1.02x
Why Handy map, soft-track tick, and the stable can get one ready when they mean business — looks a very live place play without needing to go bang.
Roughie: Powerful Dolphins (No.6) — $16.39 / $6.13
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 34.9% | Value: 1.44x
Why Last start wasn't the full story; if he gets a cleaner run from the softish setup, he can muscle into the money at a juicy quote.
Race 2 – The Chaos Handicap
Race type: BM60, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Kat Chinna and Tilussion likely to ping or sit right in the firing line
Punty read: Absolute gremlin of a race. Seven runners, a few with legitimate claims, and a couple of prices that make the ring look like a casino floor after midnight. Kat Chinna has the map but not the price, Upturn has the gear changes and the right sort of setup, and Lunessa is the classy sort who could win if the race runs to script. Tilussion is the roughie that can get loose if the old legs hold up first-up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)
1. Kat Chinna (No.1) — $13.33 / $5.11
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $99.97 (wins) / $38.33 (places)
Prob 16.7% | Place: 33.6% | Value: 2.23x
Why Can roll forward and make her own luck, but Punty isn't taking the skinny because the market's already asking you to pay up for the privilege.
2. Upturn (No.3) — $15.87 / $5.96
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 31.7% | Value: 2.49x
Why Blinkers back on, soft ground suits, and he maps to sit close enough to strike if the leaders get into a scrap.
3. Lunessa (No.5) — $5.18 / $2.39
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 30.3% | Value: 0.77x
Why She'll be thereabouts with a soft draw, but Punty's not coughing up extra coin in a race this bendy.
Roughie: Tilussion (No.6) — $12.66 / $4.89
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 25.0% | Value: 1.53x
Why First-up isn't a death sentence here; if he's wound up and can bounce to the front or sit handy, he's the sort that can nick it at a price.
Race 3 – The Speed Clash
Race type: Class B, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Saltclay likely to roll and a few others forced to chase the smoke
Punty read: Proper little burner. This one should sort the men from the boys because the tempo looks real and the race map favours the horses that can travel and then kick, not the ones that need a picnic. Queen Arni is the obvious one, but the price is doing that favourite thing where it looks important while quietly being a touch stiff. Soccerew and Butwedid can both run into the finish if the front end goes too hard, and Spanish Rage is the lottery ticket if they cut each other's throats early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Queen Arni (No.3) — $2.63 / $1.54
Bet $10.50 Place, return $16.17
Prob 16.6% | Place: 55.6% | Value: 0.44x
Why Proven at the track, gets a nice enough run, and the genuine pace should keep her in the right part of the race all the way.
2. Soccerew (No.6) — $26.32 / $9.44
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.6% | Place: 53.0% | Value: 4.10x
Why Big price for a horse that can land handy and be right there if the speed melts; just too awkward for the saver bin.
3. Butwedid (No.2) — $10.53 / $4.18
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 51.1% | Value: 1.57x
Why Soft run from barrier 2 and enough wet-ground credentials to be dangerous if the leaders overdo it.
Roughie: Spanish Rage (No.4) — $31.25 / $11.08
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 4.10x
Why If this turns into a speed collapse, the roughie can absolutely swoop late and make the exotics look silly.
Race 4 – The Proper Anchor
Race type: Open Hcp, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo with Mon Pierre and Lucky Force sitting close; no excuses for the map horses
Punty read: This is the race I trust most on the card, even if the favourite isn't the sort of price that makes you jump through a hoop. Mon Pierre is rock-solid and loves this track, but he's short enough that you're not getting rich throwing darts at him. Lucky Force is the better betting line because he gets the right sort of tactical setup and a nice enough weight swing to be dangerous. Kariaction is the smoky, but the long layoff makes it a proper query, and Start Strutting is the kind of horse that can run into the minor money if the race turns into a messy grind.
Top 3 + Roughie ($25.00 pool)
1. Mon Pierre (No.1) — $2.23 / $1.41
Bet $15.00 Win, return $33.45
Prob 22.8% | Place: 44.9% | Value: 0.51x
Why Loves the track, gets the right run from a decent gate, and looks the obvious horse to beat if he holds his recent level.
2. Lucky Force (No.4) — $6.13 / $2.71
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.7% | Place: 43.1% | Value: 1.33x
Why The map is kind, the soft conditions won't bother him, and he's the one Punty wants filling the frame without needing the perfect result.
3. Kariaction (No.3) — $26.32 / $9.44
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 4.46x
Why Long break is the obvious sting, but if he's wound up he'll be storming home when the leaders are packing it in.
Roughie: Start Strutting (No.6) — $9.26 / $3.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.5% | Place: 30.4% | Value: 1.34x
Why Best ignored at your peril if the pace gets muddled and he gets first run at the tired ones.
Race 5 – Slow Burner
Race type: Benchmark 55, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, which means the first bloke to settle in the right spot could be a hard bastard to run down
Punty read: This is a tactical race disguised as a staying test. If they dawdle, the horses with handy positions get to play chess while the backmarkers are stuck playing hopscotch in the last furlong. Kantai and Al Ash Lad are the types Punty wants around the placings, while Malarina is the value runner who can dart through if the tempo turns to mush. Dun With Roses is the favourite, but in a slow-run 1400m that's not always the magic ticket everyone thinks it is.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)
1. Kantai (No.5) — $11.49 / $4.50
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $86.17 (wins) / $33.75 (places)
Prob 18.8% | Place: 37.4% | Value: 2.15x
Why Fits the slow-pace shape better than most and should get every chance to sit forward and kick before the mudlarks start winding up.
2. Al Ash Lad (No.1) — $8.70 / $3.57
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.5% | Place: 37.0% | Value: 1.61x
Why Consistent enough, maps well from the inside-ish draw, and won't be needing a miracle if the race turns into a tactical crawl.
3. Malarina (No.2) — $14.71 / $5.57
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 34.8% | Value: 2.53x
Why The price is big enough to matter and the run style suits a muddling tempo; if they crawl, this mare can launch late and make a mess of the sprint.
Roughie: Seeya Later Gater (No.4) — $66.67 / $22.89
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.3% | Place: 13.7% | Value: 4.22x
Why Huge price, but if the race turns into a stop-start stinker and she lands closer than expected, she's the blowout that can blow the tote apart.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
QUADDIE (R2-R5)
Smart: 1,3,5 / 3,6,2 / 1,4,3 / 5,1,2 (81 combos x $0.37 = $30.00) — 37% flexi
A balanced quaddie: Race 4 is the anchor, R2 and R5 need coverage, and R3 gives you enough spice without turning it into a full-blown raffle.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - True Rail, Soft Ground, Handy Hoses
On this sort of setup, the horses that sit on or near the speed usually get the first crack. That's why Dazzington, Lucky Force, and Kantai keep showing up as live players.
2 - The Favourite Trap
A couple of favourites are too short for the job they're being asked to do. Queen Arni and Mon Pierre look the class acts, but the prices mean Punty would rather lean place or hunt value elsewhere than pay retail like a goose.
3 - The Slow-Pace Sneak Attack
Race 5 could turn into a sit-and-sprint, which is exactly the kind of setup where a horse like Malarina can mug the race late while everyone else is still waiting for the gallop to start.
THE LOOSE UNIT LOUNGE
Cunnamulla looks like a day where discipline beats bravado. Back the map, protect the close ones with place bets, and let the market hand you a couple of overs instead of trying to force a miracle. If the roughies lob, lovely. If not, at least you didn't punt like a cooked unit with a fresh pay packet. Gamble Responsibly.
