Rightio Loose Units, Devonport Synthetic on a cool, gusty Sunday arvo with the rail true is giving proper synthetic chess match vibes: the leaders and handy types should get first crack, and the backmarkers will need a fair bit of luck and a decent tempo to go their way.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Devonport Synthetic, 1009m to 1880m card
Rail: True
Official going: Synthetic, expected to play fair but with a handy runner edge
Weather: Partly cloudy, 11°C, humidity 51%, wind 9km/h NE, gusts 18.5km/h, feels like 8.5°C (watch for the breeze biting late)
Early lane guess: Middle-to-fair; no wild bias, but the first wave of speed should get every chance
Tempo profile: Genuine speed in the sprints, moderate through the longer races, and a couple of maps where position will matter more than romance
Jockeys to follow:
Kelvin Sanderson — keeps turning up on live Tassie rides and knows how to land a horse in the right spot
Erica Byrne Burke — handy on a map, and she's got a few runners here that can sit in the first wave
Troy Baker — a solid stick on the speed horses; if they hand him a decent tactical sit, he can make it count
Stables to respect:
J K Blacker (6 runners) — deep hand through the card, with a few live ones that map nicely
Adam Trinder (6 runners) — dangerous barn, especially when they get the race shape they want
Ms L Gaffney (3 runners) — not bloated across the card, but the right ones can absolutely improve
Punty's take: This is one of those cards where the form guide will try to seduce you into backing a shiny favourite and then leave you flat on the floor like a bad scene from Rocky III. The synthetic at Devonport often rewards horses that can hold a spot, roll forward, or at least sit close enough to pounce without burning petrol. That screams speed map races in R2, R6, R7 and a proper sting-in-the-tail closer in R8 if the tempo goes to sleep.
The market's already told a story too: Just Bobby, Cool As You, Stroak Of Art, Wild Dancer and Hartman have all been backed like the stable boys owe them money. That sort of money isn't always gospel, but when it lines up with map, class and a decent jockey booking, you don't want to be the mug punter standing there with your arms folded saying "nah, I know better" while the thing bolts in. The roughies? A few are parked there for decoration, but a couple of the mid-price runners have genuine paths to winning if the race falls apart or the leader gets cooked.
What it means for you: Play the card like a synthetic punter, not a romantic. The place lines are your bread and butter today, especially in the races where the map isn't a complete mess and the favourite isn't a penalty kick. Races 2, 6 and 7 have genuine tempo and should sort the field out, while Races 4 and 8 look more about class and position than finishing bursts from the clouds.
Don't go full lunatic in the exotics unless the numbers are already doing the heavy lifting for you. The early quaddie and Big 6 are there if you want a squeal, but the sensible play is to keep the stake modest and let the banker-ish races do the work. If you're looking for the sharp end of the day, the spine is simple: follow the market where it's supported the right horses for the right reasons, and don't get sucked into every drifter just because the odds look sexy.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Buzzoffski (Race 2, No.2) — $2.21
Why Genuinely fast horse in a proper burn-up, and the one they all have to catch if he bounces and holds the front like he did last time.
2 - Blameitontheboogie (Race 7, No.5) — $1.52
Why This bloke maps to roll forward, control the race and pinch the lot if the others get cute; looks the class horse in a sprint where position is king.
3 - Hartman (Race 8, No.1) — $1.83
Why Gets the dream map in a slow-run race, and when a horse this sharp lands handy from an inside gate on the synthetic, it usually takes a fair effort to knock off.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~6.16 = ~$61.60 collect
Race 1 – The Grind Test
Race type: Class 1, 1880m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace; Just Bobby and South Georgia should get the right run while the midpack runners try to wind into it
Punty read: This looks like a proper staying-ish synthetic scrap where the best-timed run matters more than any chest-puffing front-running nonsense. Just Bobby has the form, the market love and the right sort of map to stalk the speed, while South Georgia can bounce back if the held-up excuses are behind him. Last Tremble is the honest grinder who can be in the finish if they overdo it early, but the roughie lane isn't screaming from the rooftops.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.00 pool)
1. Just Bobby (No.2) — $3.53 / $1.45
Bet $7.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.00
Prob 16.8% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.80x
Why The right sort of map, the right form line and the market's been leaning his way all week; he just needs the jockey to keep it out of trouble and let him do the rest.
2. South Georgia (No.9) — $3.42 / $1.45
Bet $10.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$8.00
Prob 16.8% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.78x
Why Had excuses last time and can improve sharply if he gets clear air this time; the kind of horse that can flash late if the race gets a bit messy.
3. Last Tremble (No.6) — $5.90 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.17x
Why Honest enough and can be thereabouts if they go too hard early, but the place angle isn't juicy enough to justify throwing dollars at it.
Roughie: Northern Child (No.4) — $10.40 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.36x
Why Needs the race to turn into a bit of a dog's breakfast, but the map and class aren't totally hopeless if she can slide across and hold a spot.
Race 2 – Speed Burners
Race type: Open, 1150m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace; Buzzoffski should set the tone with Valley Star forced to work a bit harder than ideal
Punty read: This is a proper drag race. Buzzoffski is the one with the engine to control it, and if he gets rolling the rest are chasing shadows and trying not to rip the wheels off. Valley Star is the exact sort of horse that can be made to work from the wrong spot, and Scarlet Bullet/Too Poetic are the types you'd want if the front-end melts down. But honestly, the favourite looks the cleanest play in the race.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Buzzoffski (No.2) — $2.21 / $1.22
Bet $12.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$12.00
Prob 35.7% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 1.05x
Why Best early speed in the race and the horse they all have to run past; if he gets his own way in front, the others are in for a nasty afternoon.
2. Valley Star (No.1) — $3.50 / $1.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.9% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.85x
Why Honest enough and maps to sit handy, but the weight rise and the pressure map make him more a contender than a steal.
3. She's Got Swing (No.7) — $3.42 / $1.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.4% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.79x
Why First-up gear change is interesting, but the lack of a clear map and the place profile say watch rather than fire.
Roughie: All Intrique (No.5) — $15.25 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.2% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.05x
Why Could run into a drum if the leaders overcook it and he gets the right back-half sit, but he's more a blowout helper than a bet.
Race 3 – Maiden Snipe
Race type: Maiden, 1350m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace; Cool As You will settle off them, Light Work wants the race genuine, and the rest are trying not to look like debutants in a horror movie
Punty read: The money has absolutely come for Cool As You, and you can see why - blinkers off, market steam, and a stable/jockey combo that can handle the job if he takes the right step. Light Work is the sneaky one with the gear changes and the right sort of map if they run along a touch, while Can't Catch Chilli looks the kind of horse who can hold a spot and keep grinding. Guber has been getting shoved around but keeps finding excuses, so don't be shocked if he pops up running on.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.00 pool)
1. Cool As You (No.2) — $2.58 / $1.25
Bet $5.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 17.7% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.58x
Why Crunched in the market and now gets the blinkers off again; if he jumps cleanly and gets a nice tuck, he's the one they'll all be trying to reel in.
2. Light Work (No.10) — $5.85 / $2.05
Bet $7.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 14.4% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.19x
Why The gear tweaks say they're looking for a sharper effort, and if the race gets run at a fair clip he can be chiming in late like a bloke turning up in the third act.
3. Can't Catch Chilli (No.8) — $5.30 / $2.05
Bet $3.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$3.50
Prob 15.8% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.56x
Why Draws well enough to get a run and has the profile to stick on, which is why the place line looks the safer way to play him.
Roughie: Nataldi (No.11) — $10.50 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.5% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 0.67x
Why Resuming off a spell with some ability, but he'll need the race to fall in a heap and the better-fancied ones to fluff their lines.
Race 4 – Short Course Stoush
Race type: Class 4, 1350m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace; Kireina Marubrah should kick them along, with Garcon D'espoir and Taroona sitting right on the engine
Punty read: Garcon D'espoir is the class horse, no doubt, but at skinny odds you want the world to be near-perfect and the map is only 'pretty good', not 'free money'. Taroona and It's Jagger Time are the ones with a decent stalking run, while Star Territory is the underrated one if the race gets scrambled and the leaders don't get an easy picnic. With only two places paid in this little seven-horse brawl, you don't want to get too cute in the exotics and end up doing your dough like a clown.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Garcon D'espoir (No.1) — $1.84 / $1.25
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 37.2% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.87x
Why Class edge, solid recent form and enough tactical speed to put himself right in the fight; the one they all have to beat.
2. It's Jagger Time (No.3) — $4.75 / $2.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.98x
Why Gets a kinder run from barrier 1 and keeps hitting the line, so if the favourite gets eyeballed he can be the one stalking the wreckage.
3. Taroona (No.6) — $4.90 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.08x
Why Maps to be right in the run of things and has enough sharpness to matter if they go hard enough early.
Roughie: Star Territory (No.5) — $10.50 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 28.9% | Value: 1.33x
Why The roughie with the best sneaky path - if the leaders overdo it and the race opens up, he can slide into the finish like a bloke sneaking out early from work.
Race 5 – The Old Fighter
Race type: Class 1, 1350m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace; Respite should sit handy, with Stroak Of Art and Geegees Ace getting the sort of run that lets them pounce late
Punty read: This is one of those races where the map is half the story and the market has already started telling you who the punters trust. Respite is the one with the most obvious route to winning, but it's not a race to ignore the horse with the best place profile and a clean sit - Geegees Ace is the sneaky mover if the front end gets fiddly. Stroak Of Art has been heavily backed and the winkers-angle keeps him right in the frame, while Peak A Boom is your roughie if you want a bit of theatre.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.50 pool)
1. Respite (No.7) — $2.57 / $1.30
Bet $6.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$6.50
Prob 24.4% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.88x
Why The horse with the cleanest tactical map - can sit forward, relax, and get first crack at the others when the button's pushed.
2. Stroak Of Art (No.3) — $4.65 / $1.70
Bet $6.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$5.40
Prob 16.9% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.08x
Why The market has been sniffing around him for a reason, and from a decent enough spot he should be in the firing line turning for home.
3. Geegees Ace (No.1) — $6.35 / $2.10
Bet $6.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$6.00
Prob 15.4% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.36x
Why Backmarker with a proper place profile and a better-than-looks route if they overcook the tempo up front; that's where the money's made.
Roughie: Peak A Boom (No.9) — $26.00 / $5.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 1.8% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 0.67x
Why Needs the race to fall apart, but the first-time nose roll says they're looking for a bit more punch late; if the speed cuts each other to ribbons, he's the blowout runner.
Race 6 – The Hot Tempo Hack
Race type: Benchmark 64, 1150m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace; Stars In The Night is the one likely to control it, with Wild Dancer and Geegees Downpour getting the right sort of stalking runs
Punty read: This is the burner of the day. Wild Dancer has the map and the form to punch through, and the fact the market has hosed money into him says the kennel isn't mucking about. Geegees Downpour is the place play that makes a heap of sense if he gets the right trail through the race, while Captain Cam is the roughie with a real sniff if the leaders go too hard and start gasping like extras in The Matrix. The ones drawn wide need luck, because this tempo isn't going to hand out free rides.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.50 pool)
1. Wild Dancer (No.2) — $2.00 / $1.25
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 33.4% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.88x
Why Best map in the race and right in the sweet spot to stalk or lead without burning too much fuel; the market's already given the thumbs-up.
2. Geegees Downpour (No.6) — $5.05 / $1.80
Bet $9.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$9.00
Prob 14.4% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.01x
Why Honest operator who can sit in the first wave and get a crack when the speed horses start feeling the pinch.
3. Platinum Reggae (No.8) — $4.25 / $1.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.4% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.87x
Why Good enough horse, but the place angle is a touch thin and the map isn't screaming "pile in".
Roughie: Captain Cam (No.1) — $9.60 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.7% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.57x
Why Tongue tie back on and a decent enough map if he can lob midfield and peel out at the right time; that's the roughie route in a race like this.
Race 7 – The Zip Zap Sprint
Race type: Open, 1009m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace; Thoros Of Myr should kick it along, with Blameitontheboogie holding the key in front
Punty read: Blameitontheboogie looks the machine, full stop. He's the one with the class, the zip and the race shape to make them all chase him like it's the final scene in Top Gun. Thoros Of Myr is the danger if he lands the right tempo and gets the soft lead, while Tsunami Sam can use the inside draw to get a cosy run and lurk. The roughies are basically praying for a speed collapse and a miracle, which is not the worst story in a 1009m dash but it's still a tall order.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Blameitontheboogie (No.5) — $1.52 / $1.15
Bet $15.00 Win, return $22.80
Prob 44.8% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.75x
Why The class runner, the map runner and the one likely to be in front when it matters; if he gets clear air, the others need a prayer and a crowbar.
2. Thoros Of Myr (No.4) — $6.00 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.27x
Why Can roll forward and force the issue, and he's the obvious one if the favourite gets crossed or gets a bit too casual early.
3. Tsunami Sam (No.1) — $6.00 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.41x
Why Inside draw gives him a cheap trip and he's honest enough to clunk into the placings if the leaders don't totally dominate.
Roughie: Bold Instinct (No.6) — $31.50 / $6.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 0.1% | Place: 1.0% | Value: 0.10x
Why Needs a complete pace meltdown and a bit of luck, but if the speed horses fry each other, he can be the one rattling home late like a desperate charge in a Marvel finale.
Race 8 – The Closing Hour
Race type: Benchmark 68, 1650m
Map & tempo: Slow pace; Hartman should get a dream run up on the speed while the others are left trying to manufacture excitement out of a crawl
Punty read: Hartman gets the softest sort of assignment here, and if he finds the front half of the race without getting dragged into a war, he's the one who can control the finish. Skelmorlie and Whippin Piccadilly look the exact sort of horses who can stalk the favourite and punish any mistake, while Iffycould is the sneaky one if they dawdle early and sprint home late. Alpine Blast is the roughie, but he needs the race to melt in his lap more than a little.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.00 pool)
1. Hartman (No.1) — $1.83 / $1.17
Bet $3.00 Win, return $5.49
Prob 29.9% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.73x
Why Dream map in a slow-run race; if he's not beaten on positioning, he's going to be very hard to run down.
2. Skelmorlie (No.4) — $5.95 / $1.80
Bet $5.00 Place, return $9.00
Prob 13.9% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 1.15x
Why The horse with the sneaky improving profile and the sort of run that can turn into a nasty late finish if the favourite is even a shade off.
3. Whippin Piccadilly (No.2) — $5.85 / $1.75
Bet $3.00 Place, return $5.25
Prob 13.9% | Place: 59.8% | Value: 1.15x
Why Honest, track-proven and likely to get the right stalking run; the kind of horse you want on side when the pace isn't hot enough for chaos.
Roughie: Alpine Blast (No.5) — $10.75 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.32x
Why Needs the leaders to back off and the race to become a sit-and-sprint, but he can finish over the top if they get lazy midrace.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
EARLY QUADDIE (R1–R4)
Smart: 2,9,6,4 / 2,1,7 / 2,10,8,11 / 1,3,6 (144 combos x $0.14 = $20.00) -- 14% flexi
Two open legs in R3 and R4 keep this from being a lock-up; the other two legs are tight enough to anchor it, but this is still a proper sweat rather than a stroll.
QUADDIE (R5–R8)
Smart: 7,3,1 / 2,6,8,1 / 5,3,1 / 1,4,2,5 (144 combos x $0.14 = $20.00) -- 14% flexi
R5 and R6 give you the chaos, while R7 and R8 are more banker-shaped, so this one lives or dies on the middle pair; the better sequence play, but still no picnic.
BIG 6 (R3–R8)
Smart: 2 / 1 / 7 / 2 / 5 / 1 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2.00) -- 200% flexi
This is pure entertainment territory - six legs and only the one runner in each, so you're either grinning like an idiot or staring into the void.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Kelvin Sanderson's Tassie edge
The old boy keeps popping up in the right spots around Tasmania, and when he's on a horse that can sit handy or save ground, you pay attention. He's got a knack for making the map work rather than fighting it.
2 - The market's been shouting clues
Just Bobby, Cool As You, Stroak Of Art, Wild Dancer and Hartman have all been heavily backed. That isn't random pub noise - when the money firms like that and the race shape backs it up, you don't want to be the hero fading it for the sake of being clever.
3 - Sprints are a meat grinder
Races 2, 6 and 7 are proper speed tests, and if you're back behind the leaders there, you need the race to collapse or you're cooked. It's a bit like trying to overtake a freight train on a skateboard - not impossible, but you don't want to make a habit of it.
FINAL WORD FROM THE LOOSE UNIT LOUNGE
It's a card for map readers and patient punters, not dreamers chasing every shiny price. Keep your powder dry where the favourite looks legit, lean on the place lines when the shape says so, and don't turn a decent day into a comedy of errors by spraying around like a busted hose. Gamble Responsibly.
