Rightio Loose Units, Geelong's serving up a Heavy 8 with showers hanging about and the rail shoved out 6m - so this isn't a day for fairy floss and wishful thinking, it's a day for horses that can dig in, hold a spot, and keep churning when the track turns to porridge.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Geelong, 1225m-2440m card
Rail: Out 6m Entire Circuit
Official going: Heavy 8 (expected to play honest, grafting, and a bit of a slog late)
Weather: Showers, 11°C, humidity 82%, wind 16km/h NE (watch for the track to chop up and the lane to shift)
Early lane guess: Slight edge to the stalking lane with cover; if the inside sours, swoopers will get their chance late
Tempo profile: A mixed bag - a few dawdling maidens early, then some genuine-speed sprints and a couple of staying races that'll feel like a trip through the trenches
Jockeys to follow:
Jordan Childs - keeps landing on the right horses and gets the key ride on the card's main banker types
Teo Nugent - tidy, patient, and exactly the sort of hoop you want when the ground's chewing up leaders
Damien Thornton - has the sit on a couple of well-backed runners and knows how to extract the last bit when the race gets ugly
Stables to respect:
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (4 runners) - plenty of live looks across the maidens and the market keeps nudging their good ones
M Price & M Kent Jnr (4 runners) - strong presence right through the card, with a few maps that just make sense
Mark & Levi Kavanagh (3 runners) - their stock is well-placed and the market's not mucking around with them either
Punty's take: This meeting has a proper wet-weather pub brawl feel about it. The short-course races aren't going to reward the pretty boys - you want horses that can sit handy, keep their feet, and don't mind being hit with a bit of kickback. Race 3 and Race 4 look like the clearest anchor points on the card, while Race 1 is the sort of maiden that can make a grown man stare into his middy and question all life choices.
The heavy ground puts a premium on map and intent. If you're back on the speed with a horse that can actually cope in the chop, you're already ahead of half the room. But if you're blindly backing swoopers with no tempo and no clean lane, you're basically asking for a photo finish with your wallet missing a shoe. The market's already sniffing out a few of the right ones too - there's smoke around French Gift, De Ascot, and Whiskey Joe, and when the money starts dancing on a wet deck, you don't ignore it.
Back-end of the card is where the chaos merchants start doing their thing. Race 6 is a grind, Race 7 has enough moving parts to look like an episode of Succession, and Race 8 is a proper pressure-cooker sprint where the leaders can't afford to go too hard or they'll be coughing up late. It's got a bit of a Mad Max vibe - if you get the map wrong, the track will eat you alive.
What it means for you: Lean into the races where the map is clean and the market has already said the quiet part out loud. Race 3 and Race 4 are the sort of spots you can anchor your day around. Race 1 and Race 2 need a bit more respect because the maidens are ugly enough to bite you if you're getting cute, while Race 6 is a full-on watch-only slog where the roughies are more about exotics than confidence.
If you're playing multis, keep the spine tight with the horses that have the best blend of class, map and wet-track intent. If you're having a crack at the quaddie, don't go full dog whistle and spray the whole field - the early legs have a couple of clear anchors, and the back half is where you decide whether you're punting or just funding the tote's new carpet. Protect the banker races, be brave in the chaos legs, and don't chase a bad beat like you're in The Wolf of Wall Street with the rent money. Gamble like a grown-up, but still with a bit of filth in your soul.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Tagamate (Race 1, No.6) — $3.20
Why Maps handy enough on a day where you'd rather not be bolting from the clouds, and the drift has kept the price honest for a horse that still looks the one to beat.
2 - Pray Tell (Race 3, No.3) — $1.32
Why Clear class edge, slow tempo, and a map that should let him do it on his terms while the rest of them are trying to catch a cab.
3 - French Gift (Race 4, No.5) — $1.62
Why Heavy support is no accident - he maps to press forward, control the race, and keep rolling when the mud starts flying.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~6.84 = ~$68.43 collect
Race 1 - The mud-paddock opener
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1225m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace - Tagamate and Somersault are the main players up front, with the rest hoping the leaders don't get too cheeky
Punty read: This is the sort of maiden where a horse can look a champion for 400m and then fold like a camping chair. Tagamate is the one they've got to beat, but Somersault is the live danger because the track and tempo suit a horse that can keep punching without getting dragged into a speed duel. Bradford and Calexpo aren't hopeless either, but they need things to land right. Bjorson is the roughie if the leaders go too hard and it turns into a slog.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Tagamate (No.6) — $3.20 / $1.65
Bet $15.00 Win, return $48.00
Prob 27.6% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.81x
Why Strong, honest type with the right map in a race where others have a few more questions to answer. If he gets through the ground cleanly, he's the bloke they all have to run down.
2. Somersault (No.8) — $2.35 / $1.37
Bet $5.00 Place, return $6.85
Prob 23.3% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 1.01x
Why The fav's the obvious danger if the pace is genuine and the inside gets a bit tacky. No real smoke and mirrors here - she just profiles as the one that can stalk and strike.
3. Bradford (No.2) — $6.20 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.7% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 0.90x
Why Fresh horse, trial form in the locker, and the gear changes hint they're trying to wake him up. If he improves sharply, he can nick a place in the grinder.
Roughie: Bjorson (No.1) — $18.50 / $5.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 25.5% | Value: 1.15x
Why The inside draw is his ticket if the fence isn't a coffin by this stage. Needs the race to get messy, but he's the sort that can pinch a cheque if the favs overcook it.
Race 2 - The chaos maiden
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1125m
Map & tempo: Slow pace - the backmarkers need luck, and the speed map is basically a traffic jam with blinkers on
Punty read: This is the sort of race that looks simple until halfway and then turns into a complete goat rodeo. Mirador is the class act but has to overcome the wide alley, while Fast Freddie and Stellar Cipher bring the best of the late market noise. Celestial Blue and She Got Me Again are the sneaky types that have found money and look capable of hanging around the finish if the leaders don't roll away. Vixen Vibes is the roughie who can fly late if they crawl early and then sprint home like she's late for a flight.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)
1. Mirador (No.14) — $3.31 / $2.15
Bet $17.00 Each Way ($8.50W + $8.50P), return $28.18 (wins) / $18.27 (places)
Prob 18.1% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.75x
Why Big class horse in an ugly map. The market respects the talent, and if he can slot in without burning too much petrol, he's right in this from the turn.
2. Fast Freddie (No.3) — $4.65 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.93x
Why Blinkers go on and the yard has done the work. He's got the ability, but the draw and race shape make him more of a watch-the-money type than a slam-dunk.
3. Stellar Cipher (No.17) — $7.50 / $2.50
Bet $5.50 Place, return $13.75
Prob 13.0% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.81x
Why Market's started to sniff, and the first-up profile says there's improvement coming. If he lands somewhere halfway decent, he'll be rattling home when others are gasping.
Roughie: Vixen Vibes (No.15) — $12.00 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.1% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 0.93x
Why Backmarker in a slow-run race is usually a headache, but if they crawl and then stack up late, she can absolutely swoop over the top like a last-minute cameo in an action movie.
Race 3 - The banker job
Race type: Group 3, 1425m
Map & tempo: Slow pace - Pray Tell can park wherever he likes, and the rest are fighting for scraps
Punty read: Pray Tell is the horse they all have to beat, full stop. Slow tempo, strong form, heavy support - it all screams "sit back and collect" if he brings his manners. De Ascot is the one the market's had a nibble at, and you can see why with the freshen-up, the track support, and the good draw. Shows No Shame is the danger to the exacta and the place money looks a ripper, while Shades Of Stardom is the sort of unlucky bastard that can jump up and bite you if the tempo falls in a hole. Xtra Stylish is the bomber if the race turns into a drawn-out war.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.00 pool)
1. Pray Tell (No.3) — $1.32 / $1.01
Bet $12.00 Win, return $15.84
Prob 45.4% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 0.76x
Why The race is set up for him to control it and grind them into the deck. He's got the class, the map, and the sort of profile that makes the others look like they're running in the wrong postcode.
2. De Ascot (No.1) — $5.60 / $1.32
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.3% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.30x
Why The money's come, and the stable clearly means business. If he jumps cleanly and gets a soft sit on the rail, he's right in the finish.
3. Shows No Shame (No.7) — $7.50 / $1.40
Bet $5.00 Place, return $7.00
Prob 16.3% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.55x
Why Blinkers on, and the recent runs suggest he's knocking on the door. In a race where the favourite may control it, he's the one who can keep looming into the frame.
Roughie: Shades Of Stardom (No.4) — $10.30 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.2% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.59x
Why Had excuses, has wet-track form, and the market's taken a liking. If he gets luck and the leaders don't run away, he's the sort that can fill the frame at a price.
Race 4 - The short-course slugfest
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1425m
Map & tempo: Slow pace - French Gift should be the one controlling the tempo while the others try not to get buried
Punty read: French Gift is the obvious one here and the money's already told you the story. He maps to lead or sit right outside it, which is gold on a day like this. Aqua Storm is honest as hell and the sort that can keep grinding if the race turns into a war of attrition. Zetheros is the place player and Allumeuse is the roughie who keeps improving and looks the one to run on if the track gets ugly and the front-runners start feeling the pinch.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.50 pool)
1. French Gift (No.5) — $1.62 / $1.18
Bet $7.00 Win, return $11.34
Prob 38.1% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 1.26x
Why Heavy support, perfect map, and the right amount of tactical speed to make this look like a picnic if he's on song. This is the kind of race where the short one just keeps getting shorter.
2. Aqua Storm (No.2) — $2.02 / $1.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.8% | Place: 79.4% | Value: 1.20x
Why Honest as they come and should be fitter for the return. He's the main danger if the favourite doesn't quite fire, because he maps to sit close and keep coming.
3. Zetheros (No.8) — $2.67 / $1.35
Bet $2.50 Place, return $3.38
Prob 22.8% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 1.15x
Why Has the race shape to sit in the right part of the field and a finish that suits the wet. He's the sort that can sneak into the money without setting the world on fire.
Roughie: Allumeuse (No.1) — $9.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.61x
Why Improving type with a decent closing kick if they go even slightly too hard up front. On a wet track, that's often enough to turn a rough place into a proper nuisance.
Race 5 - The long grind
Race type: Benchmark 62, 1425m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace - Saxon Blood leads, and the pace horses won't get a free lunch
Punty read: This is a proper wet-track chess match. Eleanor Dumont has the freshen-up and the right style, while Jamesjohno is the sort of honest horse that keeps finding the line and could easily be the one doing the donkey work late. Sotomayor has the map and the wet form to make a noise, and Nevra Queen is the mare I don't want to leave out if the leaders get rolling too hard. Great Prosperity and Time Bandit are the sneaky deeper looks for exotics if the front half overdoes it.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)
1. Eleanor Dumont (No.1) — $4.40 / $1.75
Bet $10.00 Each Way ($5.00W + $5.00P), return $22.00 (wins) / $8.75 (places)
Prob 17.4% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.13x
Why Honest mare, strong at the trip, and the stable's had a look at the pattern and gone the right way. If she gets a comfy run in the first half of the field, she'll be right there when they fan.
2. Jamesjohno (No.3) — $7.25 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 40.0% | Value: 1.64x
Why Gets a nice spot and has been building the right sort of form. He's the honest bloke in the race - not flashy, but often the one still there when the good ones are sucking in the big ones.
3. Sotomayor (No.6) — $9.55 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.42x
Why Proven on the heavy and the trip suits the sort of horse that can sustain a run. If the speed is genuine enough, he can roll into the finish like a freight train with a flat battery.
Roughie: Dobkins (No.4) — $9.10 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.62x
Why Needs a few things to go his way, but he's got enough ability to hang around if the tempo bites the front-runners. Not the prettiest play, but definitely the sort that can make exotics interesting.
Race 6 - The slog
Race type: BM66, 2440m
Map & tempo: Slow pace - this is a staying test where patience matters and the early map is half the battle
Punty read: This is not a race to get cute in. Genrichero has the best blend of map, class and upside, while Ferago is the old hard-head with enough wet-ground grunt to keep showing up. Jaykayann and Customer Service are the obvious danger types if the race turns tactical, but the betting plan here is simple: treat it like a watch-only race and don't go burning cash just because the form guide has had a few wines. Hawk Power is the roughie with the path if they crawl and sprint off a long run home.
Top 3 + Roughie ($0.00 pool)
1. Genrichero (No.6) — $8.85 / $2.90
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $66.38 (wins) / $21.75 (places)
Prob 11.7% | Place: 28.4% | Value: 1.67x
Why Maps well enough in a staying slog and the stable's form is no joke. If this turns into a proper grind, he's the one with the right engine to keep humming.
2. Ferago (No.1) — $10.50 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 1.60x
Why Hard fit, battle-hardened, and comes into this with the sort of old-school toughness you want when the ground is turning to glue.
3. Jaykayann (No.2) — $10.20 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.55x
Why Blinkers back on and the stable's clearly trying to sharpen her up. If she settles and doesn't burn petrol early, she's right in the frame.
Roughie: Hawk Power (No.7) — $11.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 28.4% | Value: 0.89x
Why Needs a bit of luck from the map, but if the leaders go walkies and the race gets messy, he can be the one plugging on late like a busted hero in the third act.
Race 7 - The middle-distance meat grinder
Race type: BM62, 1733m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace - enough speed to matter, but not enough for the backmarkers to get a picnic
Punty read: Champagne Jenni is the kind of mare that can sit on speed and keep pinching a break, which is handy as hell on wet ground. Omnic has the class profile but the market's not screaming at me, while Amphactor is the better value play and the one I want in the frame if the tempo is honest. Fyreline is the obvious map horse with the right wet form, and Ceremonious is one of those drifters that could still bob up if the race is run to suit. Ballon D'or is the roughie who can sneak a place if the whole thing turns into a test.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.50 pool)
1. Champagne Jenni (No.1) — $5.10 / $1.90
Bet $6.00 Each Way ($3.00W + $3.00P), return $15.30 (wins) / $5.70 (places)
Prob 13.7% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.05x
Why Can race handy, has done enough first-up and second-up to be trusted, and this sort of map suits a horse that likes to roll along without too much drama.
2. Omnic (No.14) — $4.30 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 0.89x
Why The raw ability is there, but the setup isn't gift-wrapped. He can win, sure, but the price is short enough that you're not getting paid for the risk.
3. Amphactor (No.3) — $8.20 / $2.75
Bet $3.50 Place, return $9.62
Prob 11.1% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 1.38x
Why Maps to get a nice run and has the sort of fitness profile that keeps him coming when others hit the wall. In a race like this, that's half the battle.
Roughie: Ballon D'or (No.4) — $13.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.99x
Why Needs the race to unfold beautifully, but he's not dead if they overdo it in front. The path is there if the leaders start doing dumb stuff.
Race 8 - The closing dash
Race type: Handicap, 1225m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace - Whiskey Joe leads, and the front-end pressure is going to matter a hell of a lot
Punty read: Whiskey Joe is the favourite for a reason, but this isn't a race you can just glance at and nod off during. Impending War is the value-style danger if he settles midfield and gets a bit of cover, while Prestar is the class horse with the fresh gear setup. Kagemusha is the sneaky one from the wide gate if he can slot in without burning everything early, and Porsha Crystal and Stellar Mofeed are the market horses that could make the finish line look like a speed-date gone wrong. Asiatic is the roughie if they overcook the lead and the swoopers get the last crack.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)
1. Whiskey Joe (No.11) — $2.57 / $1.75
Bet $10.00 Win, return $25.70
Prob 17.5% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.79x
Why Blinkers on, natural speed, and a leader's map in a race where getting the first crack matters plenty. He still has to do it, but he's the one they've all got to reel in.
2. Impending War (No.1) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.97x
Why If the speed cooks and he gets a soft enough trip midfield, he's the blow-up horse that can pounce when the leaders start wobbling.
3. Prestar (No.3) — $2.22 / $1.57
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.6% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 0.49x
Why Fresh off a good return and the new gear might sharpen him up a touch more. He's a genuine player, but the price is the issue, not the horse.
Roughie: Asiatic (No.13) — $20.00 / $5.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.14x
Why Wide draw, backmarker style, but if the leaders have a proper crack at each other, he can thunder home like a bloke arriving late to the barbecue with a case and good intentions.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
EARLY QUADDIE (R1-R4)
Smart: 8,6,2 / 14,3,17,15 / 3,1,7,4 / 5,2,8,1 (192 combos x $0.18 = $35.00) -- 18% flexi
Two tight-ish anchors and two absolute minefields - this is a proper survival ticket, not a picnic rug.
QUADDIE (R5-R8)
Smart: 1,3,6,4 / 2,1,11,9 / 1,14,3,4 / 11,1,3,2 (256 combos x $0.31 = $80.00) -- 31% flexi
Four open legs, plenty of colour, and exactly the sort of ticket that either makes you feel like a genius or a complete goose by the last.
BIG 6 (R3-R8)
Smart: 3 / 5 / 1 / 6 / 1 / 11 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2.00) -- 200% flexi
About as skinny as a racehorse in a sauna - pure banker chain stuff, and if one link snaps you're cooked.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - French Gift and Pray Tell are getting serious cash
When the market starts hammering a short-priced heavy-track horse, it's usually because the map and the fitness are lining up. That's exactly what's happening in Race 3 and Race 4, and you don't ignore that sort of smoke.
2 - On this deck, leaders with a soft lead are gold
Race 4, Race 7 and Race 8 all lean toward horses that can sit near the front without going to war early. If they walk, the swoopers are in trouble; if they burn, the closers get their shot. It's that simple.
3 - The roughie path is all about the place money, not the win money
Horses like Vixen Vibes, Allumeuse and Asiatic aren't there to make your life easy, but they are there to break a quaddie if the race melts down. Wet tracks love a late swooper when the front half overdoes it - very "Last of the Mohicans" but with more mud.
