Rightio Loose Units, Rockhampton's rolling around on a Soft 5 with the rail out 4m and the weather looking pretty civilized on paper, but don't let that sunshine fool you - this is still a meeting where a bloke can get stitched up if he chases the wrong lane or gets sucked into the wrong part of the track.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Rockhampton, 1000m-1600m card
Rail: +4m Entire
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play fair-to-on pace, with handy runners getting first crack)
Weather: Mostly sunny, 20°C, humidity 66%, wind 14km/h N (watch for gusty straight-line chop)
Early lane guess: Slight inside/handy lean early, but not a dead rail - if they overdo it, the swoopers can come over the top late
Tempo profile: Plenty of moderate and genuine tempo races early, then a few nasty open legs once the program gets into the sprints and benchmarks
Jockeys to follow:
Ron Stewart — keeps landing on live chances that map nicely, and he's got the sort of rides that can turn a decent day into a tidy one.
Warwick Satherley — the bloke has a knack for finding cover in these Rockhampton races and timing the run just right when the speed gets honest.
Jaden Lloyd — pops up on a few key chances and knows how to stalk a race without burning petrol too early.
Stables to respect:
Jay Bellamy (4 runners) — got live ammo in a few different races, and the market keeps respecting the right ones.
S W Kendrick (4 runners) — multiple runners are getting attention, and a couple of them map like they were drawn by a bookie.
Clinton Taylor (3 runners) — his team has a few chances scattered through the card, and the ones with excuses look ready to bounce.
Punty's take: This is one of those Rocky cards where the early races can lull you into a false sense of security, then the middle of the meeting starts throwing banana peels everywhere. The Soft 5 and rail out 4m should keep the handy horses in the frame, especially if they can park up one-off and avoid being bailed up inside. But it isn't a one-lane highway - if the pace turns proper, the swoopers will get their chance, and a couple of these maidens and open handicaps are written like they were designed by a bloke who hates certainty.
The story of the day is pretty clear: a few shorties look like they should do the job, but some are unders and a couple are being smashed in the market for good reason. Peter Profit in Race 2 is the obvious little tyrant, Remember The Boys in Race 4 looks to have the map gift-wrapped, and Divakara in Race 7 is the sort of honest operator that can keep the whole day stitched together. Then you've got a stack of races where value lives in the place market or the roughie lane - the kind of races where you want a ticket in your hand, not regret in your mouth.
What it means for you: Don't get lured into being a hero too early. Races 2 and 4 look like the kind you can anchor around, while Races 5, 6, 8 and 10 are where the chaos gremlins are likely to crawl out of the woodwork. If you're playing the exotics, keep the spine tight in the early quaddie and accept that the later quaddie is more about survival than swagger.
The smart play is to let the track tell you its story: handy runners with a bit of tactical speed, horses with excuses last start, and anything being backed with a decent reason behind it. If a runner is drifting like a shopping trolley and the form doesn't back it up, don't get romantic. If one is firming and the map suits, have a serious look - that's where the juice is. And for the love of the game, don't treat every favourite like it's a moral certainty just because the price starts with a 2 or 3. That road leads to pain, chips, and a bloody long drive home.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Peter Profit (Race 2, No.5) — $1.42
Why The maiden he owns on paper, the market keeps leaning his way, and he's drawn to do very little wrong if he jumps cleanly.
2 - Remember The Boys (Race 4, No.1) — $2.81
Why Maps like a bloke who's found the front of the queue and can control the race without needing a miracle.
3 - Divakara (Race 7, No.6) — $4.40
Why Gets the right race shape at the mile and profiles like one of those honest grinders who just keeps showing up.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~17.49 = ~$174.86 collect
Race 1 – The bounce-back battlers
Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate speed; Heart 'n' Power and Leica Flamingo are the main tempo players, with Next Legacy stalking from a midfield slot
Punty read: This one kicks the day off with a bit of substance rather than a circus. Next Legacy is the one the model has on top, and you can see why - he's the sort who can settle in the right part of the race and finish off if the leaders don't pinch it. Heart 'n' Power comes back off excuses, loves the Soft, and if he bounces back to his best he's right in the fight. Leica Flamingo is the speed horse, but the price is skinny enough to make you squint a bit like you're reading the back of the medicine bottle.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Next Legacy (No.3) — $3.65 / $1.85
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$39.75
Prob 19.5% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.88x
Why He gets the map that matters and the stable's record at the track says he's the one who can bob up when the tempo is honest.
2. Heart 'n' Power (No.2) — $4.05 / $1.95
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 19.5% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.96x
Why Back on a soft deck where he's shown his best, and the last-start excuses were legit - if he jumps better, he can bounce hard.
3. Leica Flamingo (No.6) — $3.85 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.5% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.92x
Why On-speed type in the right sort of race, but the price has already been chewed down and he doesn't leave you a heap of extra meat on the bone.
Roughie: Monsieur Amour (No.8) — $17.50 / $5.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.3% | Place: 25.5% | Value: 0.91x
Why If the leaders overcook it and the backmarkers get a tow into it, he's the sort who could lob late and make a mess of the trifectas.
Race 2 – The maiden mugging
Race type: Maiden, 1100m
Map & tempo: Slow speed on paper; Peter Profit draws to control things, with Jethro and Nojonkmail lurking if the tempo gets muddled
Punty read: This is a proper favourite's race, and Peter Profit looks the bloke with the lunch money. He's short for a reason - everything about the setup says he should be hard to beat - but don't pretend maidens can't get weird. Nojonkmail is the one I want in the exactas if the rail lane is kind, because barrier 1 at Rocky in a soft sprint isn't a bad place to be if the gaps appear. Jethro has the sort of backmarker profile that can run over the top of them if the leaders go to sleep, and he's got enough market respect to keep him honest.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.00 pool)
1. Peter Profit (No.5) — $1.42 / $1.05
Bet $5.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$3.30
Prob 41.5% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 0.77x
Why The one they all have to beat - the money says the same thing the map does, and he looks set to sit in the sweet spot.
2. Jethro (No.3) — $5.95 / $1.45
Bet $8.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$8.50
Prob 16.2% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.64x
Why Backed in hard and the market's not mucking about; if the tempo gets sloppy, he'll be the one charging home when the others are gasping.
3. Cinchicated (No.9) — $8.70 / $2.00
Bet $3.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$3.00
Prob 12.1% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.97x
Why Forward enough to stay in the race and the firming tells you someone thinks this might be the right day for her to nick a slice.
Roughie: Miss So And So (No.10) — $9.90 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.08x
Why She's the one who can pick up the pieces if the first wave goes too fast or the favourite gets bogged down in traffic.
Race 3 – The speed show
Race type: Maiden, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo; Charming Seahorse has the lead, with Cyclone Topboy and Naughty Nanna keeping it honest
Punty read: This is a race with a proper shape to it - not a sit-and-squabble, but not a walk in the park either. Charming Seahorse looks the obvious engine room horse and should get every chance to roll along and make them chase. Jungle Rhythm is the map horse I keep coming back to - good draw, good jockey, and the sort of profile that can sit off the speed and finish the job if the leaders are doing too much. Tricfiddich has been a mover in the market and is the smokey in the race; when a maiden starts getting pinched like that, you don't ignore it entirely.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.00 pool)
1. Charming Seahorse (No.2) — $3.67 / $1.35
Bet $13.50 Each Way ($6.75W + $6.75P), return $24.77 (wins) / $9.11 (places)
Prob 28.1% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 1.24x
Why The map says he'll be right there controlling the race, and if he gets the soft lead this is his to lose.
2. Cyclone Topboy (No.4) — $2.81 / $1.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.63x
Why Honest enough, but the price has been murdered and he's not the sort you want to be overpaying for in a maiden with speed on.
3. Jungle Rhythm (No.1) — $5.60 / $1.80
Bet $4.50 Place, return $8.10
Prob 15.0% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 0.67x
Why From the good gate he gets the run of the race, and if the leader doesn't break them he'll be the one slashing through late.
Roughie: Tricfiddich (No.5) — $12.25 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.60x
Why The money's been nibbling, and if that support is legit he can pop up into the placings without needing the stars to align.
Race 4 – The leader's lunch
Race type: Maiden, 1050m
Map & tempo: Moderate speed; Remember The Boys and Musee Du Louvre are the main leaders, with Astilla and Gunnie Gunfighter stalking
Punty read: This is a classic case of "if you can hold a spot, you're in the frame". Remember The Boys has the map and the edge, and the bloke looks like he's been handed a cheat code with the way this race shapes. Astilla has been crunched in the market and deserves respect from the inside gate - that's the sort of move you don't ignore on a soft day. Gunnie Gunfighter is the solid little grinder in the race, the kind of horse that can jag the minor money while the flashier types do the hard yards.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.50 pool)
1. Remember The Boys (No.1) — $2.81 / $1.25
Bet $11.50 Win, return $32.31
Prob 34.3% | Place: 95.0% | Value: 1.41x
Why He maps to control the race and gets first shot at the killing kick - that is exactly what you want in a thin maiden.
2. Astilla (No.10) — $2.83 / $1.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.71x
Why The support is real and the inside draw helps, but the place dividend is too skinny to get excited about.
3. Gunnie Gunfighter (No.2) — $5.30 / $1.50
Bet $6.00 Place, return $9.00
Prob 16.2% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.01x
Why He'll be there when the whips are out and he's the sort who can keep grinding if the leaders don't blow the doors off.
Roughie: Musee Du Louvre (No.7) — $23.50 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.1% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.79x
Why Could pinch a place if the front-runners overdo it, but he's the sort of roughie that needs the race to fall into his lap.
Race 5 – The tempo trap
Race type: Handicap, 1050m
Map & tempo: Moderate speed with a stack of on-pacers; Billy Boom, Spiritof The Ocean and Moochi Starlight should keep it honest
Punty read: This is one of those races where everybody wants to sit forward and nobody wants to be the one left doing the donkey work. Billy Boom is the favourite, but he's not exactly a collect-your-money-and-go-home type in this setup. Spiritof The Ocean is the interesting one - market support plus a map that doesn't look hopeless is a nice combo, and that's where the value lives. August Joe is the freshie with a bit of race fitness upside, and if the pace gets too hot he'll be the type plugging on into the placings while the leaders melt like ice cream on the tailgate of a ute.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.50 pool)
1. Billy Boom (No.4) — $1.86 / $1.20
Bet $4.00 Win, return $7.44
Prob 28.5% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.67x
Why Hard to toss on raw ability, but he's short enough that you need him to be exactly right - and that's never fun in a messy speed map.
2. Spiritof The Ocean (No.7) — $6.05 / $1.85
Bet $9.50 Place, return $17.57
Prob 17.2% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.32x
Why The market's been sniffing, the shape suits, and he's got the sort of profile that can sit right behind the speed and pounce late.
3. August Joe (No.8) — $16.00 / $3.50
Bet $5.00 Place, return $17.50
Prob 5.1% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.04x
Why Fresh horse, soft track, and a race that could fall apart - exactly the kind of bloke who can nick a place at a fat enough price.
Roughie: Impactfull Miss (No.9) — $15.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.2% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 1.02x
Why Drifting a touch, but if she lobs into the right run from barrier 1 and the speed burns, she can absolutely annoy a few of the shorties.
Race 6 – The mile grinder
Race type: Benchmark 62, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow speed; Smart Mission and The Last Saga are pace disadvantaged, while Out Of Aces gets a more positive setup
Punty read: This one's a bit of a tactical chop-up, because the tempo looks ordinary and that changes the whole complexion. Smart Mission is the one the market will keep honest, but he's going to have to do a bit of work against a map that doesn't scream comfort. Out Of Aces is the one who makes the most sense - firming, barrier not terrible, and a setup that should let him park in the right spot without getting bailed up. Cash Artist is the absolute lunatic roughie if the race turns into a sit-sprint; if they crawl and then dash, he can swoop right over the top like a bloke arriving late to the pub and still getting the best chair.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)
1. Smart Mission (No.1) — $4.65 / $1.75
Bet $14.50 Each Way ($7.25W + $7.25P), return $33.71 (wins) / $12.69 (places)
Prob 16.6% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.97x
Why Honest as the day is long, but the slow tempo makes life awkward and he may have to do more work than you'd like.
2. Intrepid Lad (No.5) — $2.95 / $1.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.4% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.88x
Why Short enough for a bloke who might get dragged into the wrong part of the race, so I'm happy to leave him to the market.
3. Out Of Aces (No.2) — $7.30 / $2.30
Bet $8.00 Place, return $18.40
Prob 12.0% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.10x
Why The firmer support and the map line up nicely - he's the horse that can sit handy and get the first run when the others are still waking up.
Roughie: Cash Artist (No.3) — $31.50 / $5.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 1.8% | Place: 34.5% | Value: 0.69x
Why If this turns into a crawl-and-sprint, he can absolutely lob late and ruin somebody's lunch.
Race 7 – The classy chaos
Race type: Open Handicap, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate speed; Divakara and Astra Star will be in the mix while Pepperdine is the one disadvantaged by the map
Punty read: This is a lovely old-fashioned mile race where the map is more important than the ego. Divakara looks the right horse because he's got the right balance of class, map and condition, and he shouldn't have to do anything silly. Give Me Space is the sneaky one from barrier 4 - the sort of horse that can save ground, pop off the bridle at the right time and make you look clever. Logan Street Lion is the roughie who can make the finish interesting if the front pair kick at each other like it's the final scene in Rocky III.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.00 pool)
1. Divakara (No.6) — $4.40 / $1.55
Bet $11.50 Each Way ($5.75W + $5.75P), return $25.30 (wins) / $8.91 (places)
Prob 17.4% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.93x
Why He maps to get the right run in transit, and the mile looks tailor-made for a horse who can keep rolling without overexerting.
2. Astra Star (No.4) — $4.05 / $1.37
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.5% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.15x
Why Solid enough, but the price is a bit tight and there are a few more appetising ways to play the race.
3. Give Me Space (No.1) — $5.25 / $1.75
Bet $5.50 Place, return $9.62
Prob 17.5% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.19x
Why Gets in light, has excuses, and from the draw he can stalk the speed and be the one crying out for a crack late.
Roughie: Logan Street Lion (No.2) — $17.50 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.8% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.87x
Why If they go too hot early and the leaders set it up for a closer, he's the sort that can bob up and annoy the locals.
Race 8 – The cup preview chaos
Race type: Benchmark 70, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed with Inca Trail leading; Ask Me Mate is midfield, while Red Beauty is pace disadvantaged
Punty read: This is the sort of race that can make a bloke throw the remote at the telly and then apologise to it five minutes later. Ask Me Mate is the obvious top line runner and should get every chance from barrier 1, but it's not a race where I want to be overconfident and start acting like I own the joint. Inca Trail is drifting, which is a little red flag if you ask me, and Nightstick is the rough one I wouldn't be shocked to see finish over the top if they carve each other up. Darling Clementine has been backed and can absolutely fill a slot if the race shape gets messy.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.50 pool)
1. Ask Me Mate (No.6) — $2.65 / $1.30
Bet $4.00 Win, return $10.60
Prob 25.7% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.87x
Why Maps to get a perfect enough run and has the profile to win if he doesn't get dragged into a speed war.
2. Inca Trail (No.3) — $3.95 / $1.50
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.00
Prob 13.7% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.70x
Why The drift is a bit cheeky, but if the inside isn't a graveyard he can keep rolling and make a mess of the placings.
3. Italian Riviera (No.2) — $7.30 / $2.20
Bet $3.50 Place, return $7.70
Prob 13.7% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.28x
Why Gets the right sort of sit from barrier 2 and can be the one flashing through when others are starting to feel the pinch.
Roughie: Nightstick (No.4) — $10.50 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.23x
Why If the speed is genuine and the leaders have a crack, he's got the sort of late game that can surprise the lot of them.
Race 9 – The sprint salad
Race type: Open Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate speed; plenty of on-speed types, with Pocket Full, Letmeletgo and Pride Of Venus all capable of rolling forward
Punty read: This is a proper open sprint where the margins are thinner than a pub napkin. Bold Comic gets the nod because the combination of gate, map and price is just good enough to keep him in the game, and he's the one most likely to get the right run. Joy A Plenty is short but should be in the finish if the track isn't doing any funny business. Pocket Full is the fresh horse with enough old-school form around him to make the place ticket interesting, and Parade Ground is the roughie with the kind of map that can land him in the action if they go hammer and tongs early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)
1. Bold Comic (No.11) — $4.95 / $1.90
Bet $14.00 Each Way ($7.00W + $7.00P), return $34.65 (wins) / $13.30 (places)
Prob 16.6% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.05x
Why The map and the inside-ish draw relative to the cluster make him the one to beat if he gets clean air.
2. Joy A Plenty (No.12) — $3.62 / $1.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.85x
Why Good horse, no doubt, but the price is too tight for a race where a couple of other maps look just as attractive.
3. Pocket Full (No.1) — $5.75 / $2.05
Bet $6.00 Place, return $12.30
Prob 15.2% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.12x
Why Fresh, proven first-up, and from barrier 5 he can land in the exact sort of spot you want in a proper sprint.
Roughie: Parade Ground (No.7) — $14.50 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.1% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.95x
Why If the front bunch are carving each other up, he can clatter home late and turn the exotics into a headache.
Race 10 – The Rockhampton Cup teaser
Race type: Benchmark 60, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed; Royal Gladiator should lead, while Victory's Ghost and Scruffy are pace disadvantaged
Punty read: That's a proper end-of-card bunfight. Royal Gladiator is the one they all have to run down, but this is no simple lead-and-salute setup because there's enough pressure around him to make it a real race. Amberinger gets the freshen-up and the market has been happy to follow, which is usually a decent sign in these Rockhampton benchmarks. Underrated is the sort of horse whose name sounds like a punter trying to sound deep at the bar, but he's actually got the map to matter. Mimmy's Secret is the blowout roughie if they go too hard early - the horse can loom late and make a mockery of the bloke who shouted "banker" at the wrong time.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.00 pool)
1. Royal Gladiator (No.5) — $5.15 / $1.95
Bet $9.50 Each Way ($4.75W + $4.75P), return $24.46 (wins) / $9.26 (places)
Prob 14.1% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.92x
Why The map gives him every chance to roll along, but he still has to hold off a few who are stalking him with bad intentions.
2. Underrated (No.9) — $6.75 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.98x
Why He's the one who can sit midfield, get cover, and stalk the leaders while the pressure burns in front.
3. Amberinger (No.3) — $8.25 / $2.50
Bet $6.50 Place, return $16.25
Prob 11.5% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.20x
Why Fresh legs, a decent draw, and enough market support to say the stable thinks this is the right time to fire.
Roughie: Mimmy's Secret (No.8) — $14.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.84x
Why If the speed gets cooked and the race opens up late, he's the sort who can sweep down the outside and ruin somebody's multi.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
EARLY QUADDIE (R3-R6)
Smart: 2,4,1,5 / 1,10,2 / 4,7,8,9 / 1,5,2,7,8 (240 combos x $0.21 = $50.00) -- 21% flexi
R3 and R4 are the tighter legs, but R5 and R6 are proper minefields - this is one for punters who like a bit of pain with their payoff.
QUADDIE (R7-R10)
Smart: 4,6,1 / 6,3,2,4 / 12,11,1,7 / 5,3,9,13,10 (240 combos x $0.27 = $65.00) -- 27% flexi
All four legs need cover here; it's a survival quad, not a cuddle - if one shortie goes walkabout, the whole thing starts squealing.
BIG 6 (R5-R10)
Smart: 4 / 1 / 6 / 6 / 11 / 5 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2.00) -- 200% flexi
That's a pure novelty ticket - one for the theatre, not for the mortgage, because every leg needs the exact right horse to behave.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - The handy horse advantage is real
With the rail out 4m on a Soft 5, horses that can park within striking distance are the ones you'll want on your side. The front half of the card should reward tactical speed, but not so much that backmarkers are cooked if the pace gets genuine.
2 - The market is telling a few stories
Spiritof The Ocean, Tricfiddich, Inkwell, and the roughies in Races 8 and 10 have all had the punters sniffing around. When the money shows up and the map doesn't fight it, you don't need a crystal ball - you just need to pay attention.
3 - This is a day for excuses and bounce-backs
A heap of these runners have legitimate last-start excuses, and that's exactly the sort of thing that turns a six-race headache into a profitable afternoon. The bloke who ignores those excuses is usually the same bloke asking for a comp beer halfway through Race 7.
