Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, backmarkers are sniffing trouble and the on-pace types need to stay honest
Punty read: Stratford is the one to get loud about here. Blinkers first time on a horse that looks like it can tuck in, sit closer than a backmarker, and then go about its business when the race goes from "sorting out" to "actually racing". Soft 5 makes everything a bit heavier, so you want a horse that can hold momentum late, not one that needs a perfect run through a gap that never shows up.
Markos Port is the other key, straight in with class and speed early even if it's from the back. Invasion is drifting in the market and comes with an excuse, but wide, slowish pace, and Soft 5 can turn "wide swooper" into "wide late". That's why I'm happy to have Stratford as the main spine.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Stratford (No.2) — $2.90 / $1.32 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$28.50
Prob 38.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.52x
Why Blinkers first time, draw gives a real chance to stalk, and Soft 5 punishes the ones that get too far back early.
2. Markos Port (No.1) — $2.90 / $1.32 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 32.8% | Place: 61.2% | Value: 1.00x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Invasion (No.4) — $11.00 / $3.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.9% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.75x
Why Wide, and even with the bounce-back angle, it's the kind of race where you want the right lane early.
Roughie: Scoish Maloish (No.6) — $11.00 / $3.60 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.9% | Place: 24.3% | Value: 0.92x
Why The finish might be there if the pace collapses, but he needs everything to go right.
Race type: Benchmark 66, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, the leaders are there and the sprint turns on quickly
Punty read: This race is a sprint where positions and balance matter more than prayers. Vain Temptress is drawn to be in the mix and has the pace to give herself every chance to take the wind out of the field early. Harry The Thief is the sort of backmarker that can still run on, but in a short sprint, "run on" becomes "late". Borderfall looks the obvious leader, but it's hard to be brave backing a leader when the field is packed and Soft 5 makes sprint speed checks even sharper.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Vain Temptress (No.5) — $3.60 / $1.50 🏆 4TH
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 27.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.42x
Why She's on the speed, and that's the whole ball game at 1100m. Soft 5 means you want a horse with early momentum, not a kick that starts at the 200m.
2. Harry The Thief (No.1) — $4.80 / $1.65 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.17x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Borderfall (No.2) — $2.88 / $1.25 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.2% | Place: 59.3% | Value: 0.71x
Why Market's got him, but I'd rather follow the horse with more upside in a tight sprint.
Roughie: Waveton (No.8) — $11.00 / $2.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.3% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.84x
Why If it turns into a messy, wide-ish dash for the finish, he can sneak into the minors, otherwise it's a long night.
Race type: Class 2 Handicap, 1500m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so the right mid-race position is worth more than gold
Punty read: Divine Secrets is set up for a good run, and the key is the Soft 5, not everyone handles it the same way. Costalivin is on pace too, but when the race is slow, on-pace types can get swallowed if they are too eager. Daylite is the smart value angle here, he can sit and then get into the action once the race stretches, especially if the leaders start dropping the bit around the corner.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.32 pool)
1. Divine Secrets (No.2) — $3.70 / $1.57 🏆 4TH
Bet $10.32 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.32
Prob 24.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.08x
Why He's got the right profile for Soft 5 1500m, and the run pattern suits a horse that can take a sit and hit hard.
2. Costalivin (No.4) — $4.00 / $1.65 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.0% | Place: 49.5% | Value: 0.95x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Daylite (No.5) — $6.00 / $2.65 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.3% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.25x
Why This is a place-leverage sort of chance, and he's the one who can actually run into traffic and still keep grinding.
Roughie: Party It Down (No.8) — $26.00 / $6.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.3% | Place: 6.9% | Value: 0.73x
Why Needs chaos up the front and a clean lane through the middle, outside that, he's a rough read.
Race type: Class 2 Handicap, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, on-pace horses should get every chance to stick around
Punty read: Wolf Island and Star Minerva are your "keep it moving" dangers, but I'm really paying attention to Zoe. She's got the sort of position where, if the leaders don't quicken too much, she can hit the line like she's late for a BBQ. Soft 5 makes the sprint part messy, so horses that can stay balanced through the turn get rewarded.
Okami Star is there too, but if the race shapes up with the front runners holding each other, it can blunt the outside attacks. That's why Zoe is the one I'm most interested in for value on placings.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Wolf Island (No.4) — $4.80 / $1.82 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P) — ✓ Won, net +$24.25
Prob 22.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.96x
Why There's place money written all over him if the race doesn't explode, and 1300m under these conditions still rewards consistency.
2. Star Minerva (No.3) — $3.20 / $1.52 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.5% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.89x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Zoe (No.8) — $6.50 / $2.10 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.26x
Why She's the value staying power, and Soft 5 suits horses that can keep rolling, not just sprint for one section.
Roughie: Alabama Hussy (No.5) — $9.50 / $2.65 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.87x
Why She can run on if the race tempo is kind, but she's not the one I want as the main lever today.
Race type: Maiden Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, leaders should get their crack, but Soft 5 makes it harder to keep the gas down
Punty read: Regor is the one I want to build around. He's drawn inside, which matters massively when the ground is soft and corners steal a bit of speed. Magic Bus is the danger if it opens up and he gets into the right rhythm. Jenni Moo Moo looks like she can be in the mix too, but this is a race where momentum matters and Regor's got the best shot to keep it going through the line.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Regor (No.1) — $2.15 / $1.14 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 36.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.12x
Why Inside draw plus a pacey 1200m, he's set up to be hitting the line, not just passing tired horses.
2. Magic Bus (No.3) — $3.60 / $1.45 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.5% | Place: 62.1% | Value: 0.98x
Why A real chance — but at $1.45 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Jenni Moo Moo (No.6) — $5.00 / $1.72 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.54x
Why Place chance is there, but for today I want the win lever to be cleaner than that.
Roughie: Burn Sugar Burn (No.7) — $18.00 / $3.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.6% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.85x
Why She needs the race to set up for a wide-ish run and finish hard, otherwise she's chasing it from too far back.
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1100m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so the horse with the cleanest lane and best balance turns it into a sprint race
Punty read: Camden Cove is the standout map. Blinkers first time, on pace, and with Soft 5 you want a horse that keeps its rhythm and doesn't get stuck in the mud. Spokesperson is a tough place chance, but I reckon the early pressure here means Camden Cove can be the one to hold the line.
Alabama Showdown is more of a second-tier threat, she can lift if there's room, but in a short race like 1100m, being just a touch too far off can be the difference between first and "nearly".
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Camden Cove (No.3) — $3.30 / $1.50 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 45.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.21x
Why Draw and pace line up, Soft 5 rewards momentum, and he looks like he can keep it going to the post.
2. Alabama Showdown (No.1) — $3.25 / $1.57 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.79x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Spokesperson (No.7) — $5.20 / $2.25 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.05x
Why Strong place type, but today I'm trusting the map leader to win.
Roughie: Rapid Reigns (No.6) — $13.00 / $3.30 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 24.3% | Value: 0.74x
Why Needs a finish from the right pocket, but the race doesn't scream "swooper wins" on this setup.
Race type: Class 1 Handicap, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and it sets up for the leader to be dangerous early and lethal late
Punty read: The Local is the one they're chasing, and at $1.24 he better do something special early, which is exactly what he's built for. Classic Touch sits in the mix and has the value if the favourite does what favourites do, win, but not by daylight. Willingham is the nice outside saver for place money if the race develops into a sprint with runners queuing to challenge the front.
Glenn's Legacy is the wildcard crowd, but Soft 5 plus 1100m can be brutal when you have to find a route.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. The Local (No.2) — $1.32 / $1.01 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$4.80
Prob 46.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.70x
Why He maps to win, and with a short race you don't want to get involved in a "who's brave enough late" debate.
2. Classic Touch (No.3) — $7.50 / $1.90 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.92x
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Willingham (No.11) — $11.00 / $2.55 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.19x
Why Looks like a place lever, but today the safest path is backing the horse that can control the race.
Roughie: Glenn's Legacy (No.1) — $9.00 / $2.20 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.12x
Why If the speed collapses he can sneak in, but you need the front end to lose its appetite.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 4,3,8,5 / 1,3,6 / 3,1,7 / 2,3,11,1 (144 combos x $0.14 = $20.00) -- 14% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Stratford (Race 1, No.2)✓ Won — $2.28
2 - Camden Cove (Race 6, No.3)✗ — $2.16
3 - The Local (Race 7, No.2)✓ Won — $1.24

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Goulburn on a Soft 5 is the kind of track where you can feel the ground judge your life choices. If you come in riding the rails and the rain sneezes, you're gonna get smothered. But if you pick the horses that actually map to win through the slop, you're in business. Let's get stuck in.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Goulburn, 1100m to 1500m card
Rail: +3m Entire
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Save-a-length, then surge)
Weather: Mostly sunny, 21°C, watch for a cheeky sprinkle (15% chance, 0-1mm)
Early lane guess: Middle to out, backmarkers get a look in if leaders slacken
Tempo profile: Slow to moderate, so the on-pace horses get every chance to hold on, and the closers need one thing, room.
Jockeys to follow:
Keagan Latham: clean hand on the reins, and he keeps finding the right strip when it gets messy
Alysha Collett: strong for sprints and soft track chances, loves a horse with a job to do
Dale Cole: value rider, often turns "meh" draws into real races
Stables to respect:
Richard & Will Freedman (2 runners): quick gears and sharp seconds, especially when blinkers pop up
Scott Collings (2 runners): keeps bringing them up to sprint well, loves this kind of meeting flow
Bjorn Baker (2 runners): when his runners are on a wet-ish card, they come ready to work
Punty's take:
Alright legends, Goulburn Soft 5 is a funny old beast. The early tempo is looking slowish, so you can basically set your watches by one thing, the on-pace brigade gets first dibs on the finish. That rail is out at +3m too, which usually gives the running line a bit more comfort, but don't assume it saves everyone, the track is still soft under there.
Race 7 looks like the classic "one horse at the front and everyone else trying to ruin its day" scenario, and I like how the value sits around the win favourite but with enough place leverage to keep your bank account from crying. Race 6 is the other big story, Camden Cove is clearly the map, the field size is small, and when a horse like that gets to breathe early, it drifts away like the final scene of a movie when the credits roll early.
And yeah, I'm leaning hard on the Big 3 spine. Stratford sets the tone early, Camden Cove does the heavy lifting in the middle, and The Local closes it out like it owes you money.
What it means for you:
You want to be aggressive in the races where the pace is doing the talking, Race 6 and Race 7 are where the on-pace stuff should be carrying most of the weight. In the softer tempo races, I'm not chasing chaos for the sake of it, I'm taking the horses that look like they'll get the run their legs want.
In Race 1 and Race 3, you'll see plenty of "first-up" energy and gear upgrades. That's where races can get weird, blinkers first time can wake a horse up like someone turning on the kitchen light at 2am, so if your bet type has place protection, you're smarter than the average flog.
Now strap in, we go race-by-race and try to bully the bookies before they bully us.
