Punty's Punts
Race type: MAIDEN PLATE, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Sailors Rock sets the bar and the speed looks real
Punty read: This is a sprint where the leaders aren't just fast, they're annoying, because they'll keep the race honest. Farnished (No.1) is all set-up to be prominent and bounce back from that hampered mess, but Funky Cold Medina (No.2) is the one I keep circling, because the market is trying to make him look "nowhere near safe", and then the gear says go time. Birdy Girl is the chaos option, because she's the sort that can run home only if the front end does something dumb.
Top 3 + Roughie ($21.50 pool)
1. Funky Cold Medina (No.2) — $3.83 / $1.72 🏆 5TH
Bet $9.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$9.50
Prob 28.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.32x
Why On the speed profile with support, and she's got first-time race gear that usually flips a maiden into a contender.
2. Farnished (No.1) — $3.83 / $1.72 🏆 WINNER
Bet $7.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$9.00
Prob 22.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.75x
Why Bumped/hampered last time, now with bit work first time, and she's drawn to go forward and not lose ground at the start.
3. Legenderry (No.10) — $4.90 / $2.00 🏆 3RD
Bet $4.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$4.50
Prob 13.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.82x
Why Perfect "in the mix" type, and at this distance you're basically playing for a clean run through and a straight shot at the line.
Roughie: Birdy Girl (No.6) — $14.25 / $3.80 🏆 7TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.5% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.34x
Why Too volatile at this price tier for me to hang a proper bet on, unless the front end implodes and gives her a lane.
Race type: MAIDEN PLATE, 1700m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, pace advantaged No Woman No Cry and Bassett's Choice
Punty read: When it's slow at 1700, the race turns into who sits closest to the wheel without getting boxed. Audaciously Frank (No.1) can still be there early, but the real chess piece is Aurora Effect (No.9) because she's been getting market respect without needing to be a front-runner to be in the race. Edge Of Infinity (No.11) is the kind of outsider that can run a place and make life hard for the favourites because slow races love late runs.
Top 3 + Roughie ($23.50 pool)
1. Audaciously Frank (No.1) — $3.10 / $1.45 🏆 2ND
Bet $19.50 Each Way ($9.75W + $9.75P) — Cashed, net -$5.36
Prob 24.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.90x
Why The market's got him on a short leash, and he should get every chance to hit the line without the race boiling away early.
2. Aurora Effect (No.9) — $4.50 / $1.75 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.22x
Why Too strong a place profile, and I'm not doubling the same idea when the ticket's already carrying the main body.
3. Edge Of Infinity (No.11) — $4.25 / $1.75 🏆 5TH
Bet $4.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$4.00
Prob 22.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.90x
Why He's live enough to go close in a slow tempo, especially if runners bunch up and the gaps appear late.
Roughie: Coccinella (No.2) — $49.50 / $5.00 🏆 9TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.2% | Place: 16.3% | Value: 0.78x
Why She needs a big upset run, and at this price the place dividend is the only way she even justifies a look.
Race type: CLASS 6, 2200m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, classic 2200 grind where position matters
Punty read: This one's basically a stamina test with a tactical sting. Firm Agreement (No.7) is the likely "gets there first" runner because 2200 slow paces often suit the one who can control the moment. Barazin (No.2) is the value-driven grinder and can absolutely outstay them if the race doesn't explode. Claim The Crown (No.3) has gear upgrades and a track-ready look, so she's the sort that can lift late and ruin your neat little plan.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.00 pool)
1. Firm Agreement (No.7) — $1.67 / $1.07 🏆 2ND
Bet $5.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 28.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.56x
Why The on-pace profile in slow 2200 is king, and she should get the right trip to hit the line without getting swallowed.
2. Barazin (No.2) — $5.40 / $1.70 🏆 WINNER
Bet $8.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$5.60
Prob 28.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.81x
Why He's got the value angle and the race can set up for him to pick up leaders turning for home.
3. Claim The Crown (No.3) — $7.60 / $1.95 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 14.9% | Place: 51.5% | Value: 1.35x
Why Gear change suggests readiness, and if there's no early burn, she can swing into the money late.
Roughie: Winning Point (No.12) — $10.25 / $2.30 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.15x
Why He can run a cheeky place but backing him to win takes a lot more than hope at 2200.
Race type: CLASS 2 Hcp, 1100m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace, Storm Merchant and others want the front
Punty read: 1100 at Grafton with a hot tempo is all about being in the right pocket early. Alleze (No.3) is the one I want because she's tied to the on pace speed and she's got the gelded profile that often tightens a horse up into a more professional run. Youwroteuponit (No.2) is the big challenger and gets the market attention, but Storm Merchant (No.1) is the "if he gets a clear run, he makes it hard" horse. Deep Stealth (No.8) is the place saver if the leaders get messy, because he looks like the type that can slot in and pick up the pieces.
Top 3 + Roughie ($14.50 pool)
1. Alleze (No.3) — $5.40 / $1.82 🏆 10TH
Bet $4.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$4.00
Prob 28.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 2.04x
Why Gelded, on the speed map, and if the front end goes hard, she's the one who gets to capitalise rather than chase.
2. Storm Merchant (No.1) — $1.77 / $1.10 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.43x
Why At this price the value isn't there for me on place, but his presence is still a guide for how the race will unfold.
3. Youwroteuponit (No.2) — $11.25 / $2.90 🏆 8TH
Bet $10.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 10.0% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.47x
Why He's on pace, he's got interference excuses off him, and he can pick up late when the leaders tire.
Roughie: Deep Stealth (No.8) — $11.00 / $2.80 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.36x
Why If the pace stutters even slightly, Deep Stealth's spot can be the sweet lane to the line.
Race type: CLASS 2 Hcp, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Captain Eagle sets it up
Punty read: This is the kind of race where the wrong runner gets posted and the right runner just stalks, like they're watching the fight from the back fence. Vixenette (No.5) is the best "get position, then pounce" profile. Jason Darren (No.6) keeps showing up around the money and he's got that on-pace map that suits when the tempo is genuine. Captain Eagle (No.4) is the leader threat, but at this level, leaders don't always get the luxury of giving everything early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($21.50 pool)
1. Vixenette (No.5) — $2.40 / $1.22 🏆 3RD
Bet $6.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$6.00
Prob 29.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.81x
Why The on pace storyline matches the race tempo, and she can hold form through the run to the line.
2. Jason Darren (No.6) — $5.10 / $1.82 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$8.20
Prob 19.4% | Place: 55.9% | Value: 1.15x
Why He's live early, and slow enough for the leaders to hold up the pack just long enough.
3. Captain Eagle (No.4) — $7.30 / $2.35 🏆 2ND
Bet $5.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$11.55
Prob 14.3% | Place: 58.5% | Value: 1.21x
Why If the race turns into a duel, he's right there, and he's too classy to fade without being challenged.
Roughie: Launcher (No.8) — $11.25 / $2.80 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.27x
Why He's thereabouts, but I'm not widening the ticket when the main three look best suited to the map.
Race type: QUALITY, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Swing State advantaged but not the only one
Punty read: Quality 1600s are brutal, because one mistake early means you're cooked by the time they straighten. Hillier (No.1) is the classy pocket runner with the right tempo match, and Rustemo (No.3) is the sort that loves getting boxed in the market as a chance that still gets there. Swag (No.9) is the value place runner who can slot into the right timing and run on without needing a dream run.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)
1. Hillier (No.1) — $3.55 / $1.32 🏆 2ND
Bet $14.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$14.50
Prob 28.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.30x
Why Fits the race shape and should be right in the mix turning for home, where the quality horses start separating from the pretend ones.
2. Rustemo (No.3) — $1.77 / $1.04 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 27.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.64x
Why He's too short for me to chase the place when dividends are thin and the race will be competitive.
3. Swag (No.9) — $8.90 / $2.20 🏆 4TH
Bet $8.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$8.00
Prob 13.0% | Place: 54.3% | Value: 1.51x
Why Value place profile, and he's got the running style to capitalise if the mid-race pressure compresses the field.
Roughie: Giapponese (No.8) — $10.75 / $2.45 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.87x
Why Needs everything to go right, and this is a race where you pay for it if you're too far off the tempo.
Race type: HANDICAP, 1200m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace, multiple speed threats
Punty read: This is a big-field 1200 where the front end gets three attempts and still might lose. Band Of Brothers (No.6) is the prime on pace pick because he fits the tempo and can hold position. My Mum's Toyboy (No.16) is the danger from the map side of things, and Fire Star (No.5) is the roughie wild card if the race opens up. Pereille (No.4) is there to run a place if traffic goes sideways.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Band Of Brothers (No.6) — $6.45 / $2.40 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P) — ✓ Won, net +$35.96
Prob 18.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.42x
Why He should get a sweet run near the speed, and in hot 1200s that's how you survive the chaos.
2. My Mum's Toyboy (No.16) — $10.25 / $3.10 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.37x
Why The place profile is there, but the ticket already has the EW exposure covered.
3. Pereille (No.4) — $6.75 / $2.15 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.54x
Why She needs a specific race run, and at this stage I'm protecting the places with stronger candidates.
Roughie: Fire Star (No.5) — $12.00 / $3.80 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.86x
Why She's a live roughie type, but this race is the definition of "one wrong step and you're done".
Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Autumn Miss advantaged
Punty read: 1400 here is a funny beast, you want the momentum but you don't want to be chasing from too far back. Autumn Miss (No.3) is the spearhead, and she's drawn to be in the right mix. Critical Time (No.10) is the value place target if the speed holds on longer than you think. Barcelona Express (No.4) is the other one that can snatch a place, especially if the leaders get joined and forced to work.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)
1. Autumn Miss (No.3) — $2.37 / $1.22 🏆 5TH
Bet $13.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 32.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.88x
Why The best mix of early position and pace advantage, she's built to keep going when others start doing the "quick look back" thing.
2. Critical Time (No.10) — $8.10 / $2.55 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.4% | Place: 43.7% | Value: 1.24x
Why The place is live, but the dividend band is being stingy, so we keep the bet where it makes sense.
3. Barcelona Express (No.4) — $10.00 / $2.60 🏆 4TH
Bet $9.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$9.50
Prob 10.9% | Place: 43.7% | Value: 1.25x
Why On pace and in the right timing window, and she can run into a gap late.
Roughie: Vetoed (No.11) — $9.50 / $2.15 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.03x
Why If the race falls apart, sure, but I'm staying loyal to the ones with the clearest path.
Sequence legs are the picks-engine's authoritative choice, rendered from the persisted ticket.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Grafton is the sort of track where the speed looks flash early, then the line turns into a knife fight, so if you're backing like you've got all day, you'll get stitched up.
The day's got that "Good 4, rails in, no excuses" vibe, but the big thing is tempo. Some races are genuinely hot, which means leaders get a dream run, and other races are slower, which means you can sneak a swerve and get rewarded for having patience. Either way, the rails being true gives the front end first crack at pinching the race.
Now, my spine for the whole meeting is a simple three-bet story. Race 8 for the big money in the middle distance-feel sprint, Race 5 for the grinder with the right map, and Race 4 for the gelding with the receipts. After that, we just work race-by-race and try not to be the mug who chases the shiny $80 horse because the commentator yelled "FAR OUT" once.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Good 4, 1000-2200m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play Leaders + On Pace, Finishers when tempo soft)
Weather: Possible shower, 17°C, humidity 50%, wind 20km/h SSE (watch for temp drop if a sprinkle shows up)
Early lane guess: MID_FAV through the earlier events, then the Wide Open chaos turns up in the back end
Tempo profile: Mix of hot and genuine sprints early, then a couple of slower races where you want midfield runners with a clean run.
Jockeys to follow:
Nash Rawiller: often rides the leader and the leader's job is already 50% done at Grafton when the pace is genuine.
Ben Looker: loves a quick first move, and he's on enough live chances that he's basically part of the furniture.
Robbie Dolan: when he's on, the stable tends to get their money's worth, and he can navigate traffic like a bloke squeezing into a park spot.
Stables to respect:
M J Dunn (6 runners): the machine stable, keeps showing up in the exact races where the tempo does the hard work for them.
Wayne S Lawson (6 runners): brings them back sharp, and you can't underestimate how often they get a run through.
Cassandra Schmidt (4 runners): good for those "you think it's too short, then boom" type preps.
Punty's take:
Grafton today is basically Speed vs Sanity. When it's hot and the pace is real, the on-paces get first dibs and the backmarkers have to be gifted a clear lane, otherwise it's just weaving through cars on the M1. That's why I'm drawn to the front running set-ups in the sprints, especially where barriers help them hold position and not get trapped three wide doing extra work.
Then you flip to the longer stuff where it's slower. That's where your sweepers can do their thing and where a midfield runner can steal a run because everyone else is busy running at half speed like they're late for a pub quiz. Race 8 especially, the race shape screams that the right horse just needs momentum and a fair crack at the straight.
Market-wise, a few names are getting pounded and a few are drifting like they missed the memo. I love backing horses that look like the market's trying to hard-sell them into being safe, but I'm also not ignoring the ones that shorten because they've got the map and gear switch working together.
What it means for you:
If you want to make this meeting simple, be aggressive in the spots where the early pace advantage is obvious and the top of the market aligns with the race shape. That's where Win bets and place bets both do the job, and you don't need to overthink it like it's an escape room.
For the riskier races, protect yourself with place when the winner is likely to be an on-pacer but the field is wide enough that trouble can pop up. And if you're chasing the roughie, do it with a clear "how they win" story, not vibes, because Grafton punishes emotion.
Now grab your ticket, don't be a hero, and let the speed do the talking.
